Chesapeake restaurant sinks, and Karzai family takes over.

In the ever-revolving doors of the restaurant business—they open, they close, they change hands—The Chesapeake Baltimore, which recently closed after less than a year of being open, is now being taken over by the Karzai family.

Time was, The Chesapeake was a mainstay on the Baltimore dining scene, but the space remained unoccupied for 25 years, and its reopening—after $4.5 million in renovation and redevelopment—was met with much anticipation.

Initially, Quayum Karzai (who owns some of our favorite local spots—HelmandTapas TeatroB Bistro) was involved with the Chesapeake venture, but pulled out of the project in 2011.

Once again, we eagerly anticipate how the Karzais will handle the space. There’s no word yet on the menu or even if the name will stay the same, but the goal is to get the Station North spot up and running by Artscape.

Fingers crossed that this restaurant, located next to Tapas Teatro, will feature similar small plates and kick-ass pitchers of crowd-pleasing sangria.
