What do a toy store and a communications installation business have in common? Both are owned by women who recognized the benefit of having a dedicated team of advisors provide expertise to help their businesses grow. As the first graduates of Baltimore’s ATHENAPowerLink® program, both women considered it an “invaluable experience.” The Baltimore ATHENAPowerLink® program, which accepts applications on a rolling basis, connects female business owners with a tailored panel of advisors who help the owners meet their goals to achieve greater success. PNC Bank launched the yearlong business-mentoring program locally in 2013.

Claudia Towles, owner of aMuse Toys, an independent toy store with two Baltimore locations, said the program helped her improve business operations and crystallize a vision for the future. “It has given me confidence to forge ahead,” says Towles. “I was trying to light the way with a match, now I have a powerful LED helmet and am no longer making decisions in the dark.”

Another success story is Kim Valentine, who owns National Fiber and Copper, a communications installation company that serves commercial businesses and the federal government. Valentine’s primary goal was diversifying her client base. “Before the program, I didn’t know the power of networking. One of my advisors opened my eyes to how crucial networking was for business development.”

“Women are the fastest-growing segment of business owners, and mentoring and coaching programs like this are playing a key role in their success and strengthening the local business community” says Laura Gamble, PNC Bank regional president, Greater Maryland.

Baltimore Country Club, a five-star Platinum Club, was founded on January 13, 1898, in Roland Park. The club immediately distinguished itself by accepting women as members during an era when most private clubs were exclusive to gentlemen. In its 118 years, the Club has expanded to include a second clubhouse in Baltimore County at Five Farms. This unique model means the Club’s two locations can keep members and their families engaged throughout the four seasons. Baltimore Country Club is one of only seven clubs nationwide to operate on two campuses.

A premier full-service country club for the entire family, Baltimore Country Club has a strong team of female professionals in place to ensure that the needs of every female member and guest remains at the forefront of all club operations. Like the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women campaign, Baltimore Country Club works to keep women healthy and strong, valuing and upholding the principles promoted by the Heart Association.

Collaborative Practice utilizes an interdisciplinary group of professionals, including attorneys, mental health practitioners, and financial professionals, to resolve disputes associated with separation/divorce, child custody, marital property, guardianship, estates and trusts, medical malpractice, contracts, and business disputes without going to court. It is especially well-suited to those clients who want or need to continue a relationship after the resolution of the dispute, such as parents who want to maintain a positive co-parenting relationship.

Using a non-adversarial approach, Collaborative Practice is designed to negotiate mutually agreeable settlements that are determined by the people involved, not the courts. In a Collaborative case, the participants commit to working together in a transparent fashion with the mutual goal of reaching an agreement. This expectation of full disclosure means that issues can be resolved without going to court, and relationships between parties can be preserved after completion.

The mission of the Collaborative Professionals of Baltimore is to develop and promote Collaborative Practice as an effective, and often less costly, means of alternative dispute resolution and to offer professionals of all disciplines involved in dispute resolution—as well as the populations they serve—a humane and respectful way to resolve conflicts.
