For families around the world, Lunar New Year is a time of gathering and celebration, rooted in old traditions and new beginnings. Whether you’re handing out red pockets of money, wrapping bánh tét cakes, or folding pleats in dumplings, there so many ways to commemorate and learn more about the holiday.

Here in Baltimore, ring in the Year of the Horse—symbolizing energy, independence, passion, and momentum—by exploring these upcoming events planned by restaurants, museums, breweries, and other community organizations.

2/17-3/3: Lunar New Year Menu at Nine Tailed Fox
Through March 3, chef Timur Fazilov and his team at this Cross Keys dining destination are serving special cocktails and dishes dedicated to the holiday’s principles. Start by sipping a Red Orange Manhattan meant to symbolize good fortune, joy, and protection. Other cocktail names and ingredients are meaningful, too, like the tequila and ginger-forward Lunar Lychee (representing harmony and new beginnings) and the Matcha Martini (representing good health and long life.) The celebratory plates include red and gold chicken and shrimp dumplings (wealth and good fortune), family-style Peking duck (family unity and completeness), and sesame balls for dessert (sweet life.) 3 Village Square.

2/17: Lunar New Year at Live Casino & Luk Fu
The Year of the Fire Horse will start off strong at Live! in Hanover, whose casino floor will be properly decked out with installations featuring horses, lanterns, gold coins and Chinese knots. A special lion dance parade is set for Feb. 17 at 7 p.m., and afterward, you can grab a table at Luk Fu for specials such as lobster tempura, pan-seared whole pompano with fish sauce, and a stir-fry with cured pork belly and Chinese sausage. 7002 Arundel Mills Cir. Hanover

2/18-2/20, 2/26: Lunar New Year Pop-Up Menu and Wine Dinner at The Corner Pantry
Swing by the beloved cafe in Mt. Washington to indulge in the annual Lunar New Year menu, which will highlight all-day specials Wednesday through Friday. Previous favorites this time of year have included black tea custard tarts, green papaya salad, congee rice porridge, and ginger-orange drinks. Continuing the celebration, on Feb. 26 the team is hosting a ticketed Year of the Horse Wine Dinner with Peter Wood of Spirit Shop Falls Road, plating up dishes such as butternut squash dumpling soup, curry-roasted branzino, and miso-aged ribeye—each served alongside a curated pour. 6080 Falls Rd.

2/21: Peabody Heights Brewery Lunar New Year Celebration
The community-focused brewery’s annual celebration of AAPI culture returns, this year with a local vendor market, an all-ages drag show, Korean fusion fare, live music by acoustic guitarist Steve Hung, and lion dancing by U.S. Jow Ga Martial Arts in Columbia. And, of course, it wouldn’t be a Peabody party without a special release. Make sure to hit the bar for a sip of the Year of the Fire Horse-inspired beer, too. 401 E. 30th St. 6-10 p.m. Free admission

2/21: The Walters Art Museum Lunar New Year Celebration
The Mount Vernon art museum invites guests to partake in horse art-making, storytelling, a fun photo booth, a gallery scavenger hunt, and a letter writing activity where you can write your New Year’s wish on a postcard and the museum will mail it to your future self. Eats and drinks for purchase from local AAPI vendors (Ekiben, NiHao, Peabody Heights Brewing, Peter Chang Baltimore, and Phowheels) will be plentiful. And be sure to get a good view for the performance portion, which will showcase the Baltimore Chinese School, Korean Culture and Art of Maryland, and Yong Han Lion Dance Troupe. 600 N. Charles St. 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

2/21: Baltimore County Public Library Lunar New Year Festival
Bring the kids to the BCPL Cockeysville branch to learn more about the traditions and stories behind Lunar New Year. Spend your afternoon browsing Chinese artwork and calligraphy, mastering the art of using chopsticks, DIYing a paper-folded horse, and enjoying live performances around the stacks. BCPL Cockeysville Branch. 9833 Greenside Dr. Cockeysville. 2-4 p.m.

With so many incredible civic organizations and helping hands doing great work in Charm City, it’s easy to see Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy in action all year long. But MLK Day is a specific time to reflect on the enduring power of one of our country’s most influential leaders.

This year, make Jan. 19 more than just a day off by attending a lecture on Black history, celebrating with local artists and poets, giving back to the community, or checking out the city’s annual parade. Here are a handful of engaging activities and events to get involved throughout the long weekend.

Jan 17: MLK Performances at The Walters
The B&O Railroad museum is hosting a full weekend of activities exploring the deep connections between quilting and the Underground Railroad—as the art form was often used during the time of slavery as a means to communicate, with “quilt codes” embedded in the patterns. To honor Dr. King’s legacy, the museum will host family-friendly mini quilt craft sessions; displays from the Baltimore Heritage Quilt Guild and Uhuru Quilters Guild; African American Railroading Legacy tours; and guided tours of the museum’s Underground Railroad: Freedom Seekers on the B&O exhibit that focus on quilting traditions. 901 West Pratt St. Times and prices vary.

Jan 19: Annual MLK Day of Service with Civic Works
Every year, Civic Works hosts its MLK Day of Service as an opportunity for locals to give back to the community at large. Join more than 300 other volunteers across seven sites in volunteer activities like organizing warehouses, cleaning public spaces, gardening, and more. Various locations. 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Free with registration.

Perfect for the family, this annual event will feature an open mic and poetry slam, art workshops, live choir performances, and a picture book presentation by local author B. Sharise Moore, the brains behind A City Dream. 800 Key Hwy. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Free.

The annual day of programming at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture will explore civil rights through the lens of youth activists. Highlights throughout the day will include a youth panel discussion on redefining activism, an elder panel on youth in the Civil Rights Movement, a film screening of Ain’t No Back to a Merry-Go-Round, youth choral and dance performances, and an Afro hip-hop dance class. Reginald F.
Jan 19: MLK Day Parade
For more than 20 years, Baltimore has hosted an annual MLK Day Parade, bringing the city together in celebration and reflection of Dr. King’s principles. On Monday, Jan. 19, the city’s annual parade will once again march down Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in remembrance of the street’s namesake. Starting at noon, the procession kicks off at Eutaw Street, with marching bands, dance groups, color guard troupes, local leaders, and more in tow. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. between Eutaw St. and Baltimore St. 12 p.m. Free.

Jan 19: Symphony in the City MLK Day Celebration Concert at the BSO
The BSO is partnering with the Mayor’s Office to host this free performance showcasing the work of pivotal Black composers such as Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Florence Price, and Morgan State University’s own James Lee III. Led by music director Jonathon Heyward—with vocals by the Morgan State University choir—the program will close out with Charles Dickerson’s I Have A Dream, an emotional musical tribute to Dr. King’s iconic speech. Be sure to arrive early for pre-show festivities (think: live poetry, DJ entertainment, a step show, a selfie station, and an interactive “Dream Wall”) in the Meyerhoff lobby. 1212 Cathedral St. 5:30 p.m. Free with reservations.

We’re still not ready to talk about the season opener in Buffalo, but we will say this: If the Ravens’ first away game is any indication of how this year is going to go, we’re in for some thrilling football.

If you need a place to flock with fellow fans, look no further than the local bar scene—which is once again revving up for the season with discounted food and drinks, live DJs, games and raffles, and more fun.

There are even some new places to party this year, including Liv’s Tavern—the concept that is carrying on the legacy of the Purple Patio at the former home of Mother’s in Federal Hill. Now open to the public in soft-launch mode (a grand opening is planned for Sept. 26), the revived bar from the team behind Wayward Bar & Kitchen next door is expected to bring some new flair, while still continuing to be a gameday headquarters on South Charles Street, just as Mother’s was for nearly three decades.

For even more ideas on where to root for the Ravens this season, scroll through our list of spots stationed everywhere from Federal Hill and Fells Point to Mt. Washington and White Marsh.

Benny’s: Sunday Fundays are on at this Little Italy fave—a bigger and bolder successor to the late, great Joe Benny’s. Snag a seat to sample specials inspired all of your favorite players, including $8 Lamargaritas, $9 Tucker sliders, and a $22 Derrick Henry special of sloppy meatballs and any beer. 300 S High St.

Bmore Around Town Tailgates: Arguably, the best pregames are tailgates. And the experts with Bmore Around Town make theirs a packed affair, with special performers and DJ sets, all-you-can-eat barbecue, a fully stocked open bar, and activities like axe throwing and corn hole. Ticket packages range from $30-385.

Charles Village Pub Towson: If you’re tuning in from the heart of Towson, head to this community institution for a $20 gameday huddle platter of nachos, boneless bites, mozz sticks, bacon-cheddar potato skins, and onion rings. Wash it all down with $15 beer buckets while watching the action. 19 Pennsylvania Ave.

Charm City Spirits Co.: This one isn’t a bar, but it’s worth mentioning if you’re hosting an at-home flock party or you’re in need of something special to take to a tailgate. When you hit the local liquor store this season, keep an eye out for two new bottles—Charm City Vodka and Charm City Straight Bourbon Whiskey—stamped with “Play Like a Raven” labels that celebrate the franchise’s 30-year anniversary. The products (as “collectible as they are drinkable”) are a new limited-edition collab between the team and BOTLD.

Cross Street Public House: You know and love this Fed Hill bar for its Detroit-style pizzas, boozy slushies, and impressive themed trivia nights. On Ravens watch days, expect drink specials like $3 domestics, $4 White Claws, $4 purple slushies, and $6 bombs. 26 E Cross St.

This Canton tequila bar serves its regular Mexican-inspired menu, plus $5 ghost bombs, $20 domestic buckets, and $30 seltzer buckets, on game days. Snack-wise, indulge in a $15 football app tray complete with six wings, tots, chips, and queso. 2921 O’Donnell St.

As the name “scrapple” suggests—scraps, scrappy, scrapped—the region’s famed food mashes leftover pork trimmings with cornmeal, buckwheat, salt, and spices to form a loaf reminiscent of a more textured Spam.

For some, it might not sound like the most appetizing of breakfast fare, but the crispy-fried rectangle is an iconic part of Mid-Atlantic cuisine. For more than a century, it’s been lovingly associated with diners and food markets across Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Delaware.

In Baltimore this weekend, the delicacy is getting an entire event dedicated to it.

On November 9, Highlandtown’s Creative Alliance will host the city’s first Scrapple Fest, a celebration of the history and significance of the old-school staple. Joy Davis, Creative Alliance’s visual arts director and the organizer behind the festival, says it initially started as a film screening for Scrapple Road, a 2022 indie documentary from director Kurt Kolaja.

“The film is really about Kurt’s experience with scrapple and how important it is to the Delmarva area,” Davis explains. “He interviewed chefs who work closely with scrapple, talking about the preparation, the Mid-Atlantic area, and how this food is so important.”

Eventually, plans for the screening turned into to a full-blown celebration, as Davis collaborated with Kolaja and chef John Shields of Gertrude’s, who has written four cookbooks on Chesapeake cuisine.

“Kurt and John inspired me to do more for scrapple, to think more holistically,” Davis says. “There are festivals in Southern Maryland and Delaware, but we didn’t really have any representation on that scene in Baltimore. So we came together to think about different ways we could celebrate scrapple and landed on the program we have now.”

The evening promises offerings like a “breakfast for dinner” menu from chef Jon Carroll of Carroll & Son Fine Foods, a lounge serving drinks reminiscent of scrapple (although not containing actual scrapple), and vendors including food historian Joyce White, who writes about scrapple in her new book, Cooking Maryland’s Way: Voices of a Diverse Cuisine. The night will culminate with a screening of Scrapple Road and a talkback with Kolaja.

For scrapple lovers, tickets (ranging from $10-40) to the fest are an opportunity to celebrate the enduring legacy of scrapple, which continues to be a fixture even after hundreds of years.

“Scrapple has a long history that goes back to pre-Roman times in Europe,” Davis says. “Like other mashed meat products, it was a way for people to use up leftover or undesirable meat scraps. Eventually, scrapple was brought over to the U.S. by the Pennsylvania Dutch.”

From its initial introduction, the food became a local delicacy. While those outside the region might not get the hype, it inspires nostalgia for many Baltimoreans who grew up eating the fried square slices with their eggs and toast.

“It’s a very versatile food,” Davis says. “I grew up eating scrapple, mostly for breakfast, and my dad even used to make a vegetarian version. It’s very nostalgic for me. The way that Baltimore and other places have been able to hold onto scrapple as a staple is really fantastic.”

Looking ahead, Davis hopes to make the festival an annual tradition for fans and skeptics alike.

“I want to share scrapple with those who haven’t had it yet, but I also want to gather folks who already love it,” she says. “This festival is really about bringing people together in acknowledgment of this food, being in community with one another, and of course, eating scrapple.”

THB Bagelry & Deli has come a long way in its 25 year-run. With the help of the Scotto family, the original shop for hangover breakfast sandwiches and coffee in Towson has grown into one of Baltimore’s most recognizable cafe chains, with seven locations scattered everywhere from Canton to Columbia.

The menu—nowadays accessed most via self-serve kiosk and online app ordering—has expanded to include packed sandwiches, wraps, and omelets, as well as rotating specialty bagels that flex the brand’s civic pride. (The multi-colored Maryland Day bagels, purple Ravens bagels, and purple-and-teal bagels that recently acted as a fundraiser for the Maryland chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention are all among standout examples.)

“We’ve done a lot of work over the years,” says president and CEO Tony Scotto. “We created the brand. We’ve expanded. We’ve updated the menu from time to time.”

Still, some things never change—like the crisp, doughy texture of the boiled-and-baked daily bagels and the business’ family-run ethos. When Scotto and his cousins moved to Baltimore from Naples, Italy, they never imagined they would one day take over the cozy bagel shop that had been operating next door to their family’s Italian restaurant off of the Towson Circle since 1999. But eventually, they did. In 2008, Scotto—along with his brother, sister, cousin, and father—officially took over the original THB.

“It started out as a joke,” he remembers. “THB was small at the time, but very popular. Because they didn’t have much space, some of their customers would sit at our tables next door, so we joked that we should become partners. And then at some point, as we got to know the owners more, it stopped being a joke. We realized there was great potential there.”

An Italian family getting into the bagel business might seem unusual to some, but Scotto says the owners’ love of family, food, and their Southern Italian heritage made it an ideal fit.

“THB reminds us of our grandfather’s deli in Italy,” he says. “Bagel shops share a lot of similarities with Italian delis, like the sliced meat and vegetables and the freshly made bagels and bread. So, this feels a lot like home.”

In honor of the eatery’s 25th anniversary, we recently caught up with Scotto to ask about changing carb trends, his go-to order, and what comes next.

After 25 years in business, how have you observed Baltimore’s taste in bagels changing over time?
People have become more and more open to new tastes from different cultures. It’s allowed us to explore new flavors, like a za’atar bagel that’s influenced by Middle Eastern food. For this 25th anniversary, we’re trying out a calendar of bagel flavors, seeing what people like and respond to. We hope with the growing openness of our customers, we can keep adding interesting new bagels to our menu.

THB’s menu is constantly being updated with seasonal specials, like the pumpkin spice bagels, pink bagels for breast cancer awareness, and rainbow bagels to celebrate Pride. What are some flavors that stand out to you when you look back?
Well, I have a few. The Maryland Day bagel is one of my favorites. It’s great to see the pride people have for our state flag. I also love the za’atar bagel, especially with my turkey sandwich and the asiago bagel with our tuna salad.

What’s your ultimate go-to order?
It depends on the time of the day or what I’m in the mood for. After a weekend out—which is a little less common for me these days—an egg, ham, and cheese on an everything bagel is the perfect cure. But the one I probably eat the most is the bacon, egg, and cheese. That’s our biggest seller. Just last year, we sold over half a million!

Toasted or untoasted?
For almost all of my bagels, I get them untoasted, so the freshness of the bagel shines. That’s how they do it in New York City—almost no one toasts their bagels there.

You’re in the midst of renovating the Towson flagship. What’s the significance of that project overlapping with the 25th anniversary?
The renovation represents our commitment to Towson. This is the end of a four-year renovation process that started with our other locations and is ending with Towson. We’ve updated the store a few times in the past, and each time we do, we’re demonstrating our commitment to staying here and investing in this community. I mean, Towson is in our name. This community is our family, and that’s also reflected in the new design of the store. We’ve installed a beautiful mural with the Italian and Maryland flags. The local artist [Cindy Fletcher-Holden] really did a wonderful job.

What are your plans and hopes for the future?
We’re looking at different opportunities. We love collaborations with local chefs. Last year, we did a collab with Chad Gauss from The Food Market, which was a PB&J with bacon on an everything bagel—his favorite sandwich. We’ve collaborated with brands like McCormick, and we always try to support local charities like American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Lifebridge Health for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the Casey Cares Foundation.

In terms of bigger plans, we just bought a new commissary kitchen, which will allow us to go from producing 3,000 bagels to 12,000 bagels per hour—a big step up. We’re hoping to increase our wholesale and franchise business to keep growing in the communities around us. And with that growth, we can provide a better quality of life for our business partners and employees. When you work in the restaurant industry, it’s a big deal if you can be home by 5 p.m. and still have dinner with your family.

Why is Baltimore specifically a great home for THB?
Culturally, Baltimore is very diverse. People are always open to new flavors, which we love to experiment with. From a business standpoint, the city is well connected in the northeast. Being in the center of two big markets, Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia, definitely makes it easier to grow. But on a more personal note, Baltimore reminds me a lot of the small Italian town I’m from, near Naples. Both places are by the water and have a big seafood culture, so that emotional and cultural connection always makes me glad that we landed here and not somewhere else.

Among our renowned spooky sites and landmarks is the historic Lord Baltimore Hotel.

Established in 1928, the downtown building has a storied past, having hosted prominent figures such as Babe Ruth, who booked a room on his last visit to Baltimore; Amelia Earhart, who dined at the hotel; and Martin Luther King Jr., who held a press conference there. Throughout nearly a century of the hotel’s existence, guests have reported strange sightings, leading some to distinguish the building as one Baltimore’s most haunted. (It’s also topped national lists of scary sites, published by the likes of Forbes and Reader’s Digest.)

On National Ghost Hunt Day, this Saturday, September 28th, the hotel is teaming up with the Baltimore Paranormal Society for its annual investigation though the hallowed halls.

“Ghost hunting takes place all across the country on this day,” says Lee Johnson-Lowe, the hotel’s longtime director of sales and marketing. “We do this event every year, and it’s a lot of fun.”

For the $45 cost of a ticket—all event proceeds will be donated to the PMJ Foundation, which provides back-to-school supplies to low-income families in the area—attendees will be able to fire up provided ghost-hunting gadgets (think: electromagnetic field meters and electronic voice phenomenon recorders) and follow experts to seek out supernatural activity.

“We were really excited when the Lord Baltimore Hotel reached out and asked to partner up on this,” says Brian Pierce, the founder and lead investigator of the Baltimore Paranormal Society. “The hotel is notorious among the paranormal community in Maryland. It’s one of the more desirable places for investigations, but it’s also harder to get into because it’s an operating hotel. My team is excited to finally get in there to lead an investigation.”

Aside from seeking spirits, the Baltimore Paranormal Society—a fully volunteer team of investigators—hopes to help inform the public about what a ghost hunt is really like. Of course, they also want to make sure everyone has a good time.

“At the end of the day, we’re just excited to educate the guests on ghost hunting,” Pierce says. “If we get some decent activity, that’s just an added bonus.”

In advance of the hunt, Johnson-Lowe gave us some insight about the hotel’s spookiest spaces. If you attend, here are the areas that will likely send chills up your spine:

The 19th Floor
During the Great Depression, the hotel was one of the tallest buildings in the city. In an era of financial crisis, it became host to “over 22 documented 19th-floor jumpers” whose spirits allegedly haunt the hotel. In the years since, guests have reported eerie sightings in the rooms of this floor, including the ghost of a little girl named Molly, “who runs around the hotel with a red ball, looking for her parents who jumped from the 19th floor,” according to Johnson-Lowe.

Versailles Ballroom Speakeasy
Nestled behind a hidden door in the corner of the Lord Baltimore’s grand Versailles Ballroom is an intimate speakeasy featuring plush couches and a warm fireplace. During the Prohibition era, the hideaway was fully functional, and remnants of its history can still be found in reported spectral activity. As Johnson-Lowe says, “we have had investigators claim that they’ve made a connection to spirits here.”

Calvert Ballroom
Among the hotel’s numerous paranormal investigations, many ghost hunters have reported seeing a couple that actually dances in the hotel’s Calvert Ballroom. Beneath antique crystal chandeliers, the incorporeal pair floats across the ballroom floor in a shadowy waltz. Johnson-Lowe adds that, according to the investigators, these two dancers are “not the parents of the little girl Molly” and they “do not like to be bothered.”

Mezzanine Level & Guest Room Floors
Overlooking the hotel’s spacious lobby is the mezzanine level, an open space with a view of the ornate ceiling used for a variety of events. Although it’s difficult to anticipate what activity might occur on the night of the ghost hunt, past instances on this level and beyond have included ghostly voices, cold spots, moving objects, and even full-body apparitions. In addition to the mezzanine, Johnson-Lowe hopes to open investigations on one of the guest room floors, which ghost hunters have reported otherwordly energy emanating from.

Fall isn’t just about colorful foliage or holiday feasts—it’s also prime time for spices and cloves to make their way into your daily cup of joe. A Pumpkin Spice Latte might be the first thing that comes to mind, but this season, why not ditch the Starbucks PSL for a PCL (Pumpkin Cheesecake Latte) at Order & Chaos in South Baltimore? Or pick up a warm oat milk honey graham latte, topped with actual toasted marshmallows, at Ceremony Coffee? These are just a few of the seasonal drinks you’ll find at local cafes, where coffee aficionados are whipping up fall creations that will leave you dreaming in hues of orange, yellow, and red.

Apple Butter Latte at Aveley Farms Coffee Roasters
Coffee is king at this Towson roastery, which uses sustainably sourced, locally roasted beans to make delicious brews like the apple butter latte, featuring caramel apple syrup. This season, you can also go for the autumn spice latte, combining spiced maple syrup with cinnamon, espresso, and milk. If you’re really committed to the flavors of fall, top off either of the drinks with the shop’s salted caramel cold foam.

This Canton cafe sees regular lines out the door for its rotating schedule of baked goods and sandos, but they’re also serving up a delicious fall sip that features black sesame, caramel syrup, and a pinch of Maldon salt for a blend of sweet and savory flavors. If you’re looking for a more familiar drink, they also sell a PSL, which makes use of house pumpkin syrup.

Oat Milk Honey Graham Latte at Ceremony Coffee Roasters
The baristas at Ceremony are always whipping up interesting drinks with fun names, like their new latte version of a s’more dubbed, “Get Toasted.” It’s an oat milk honey graham latte with chocolate, graham crackers, and toasted marshmallows. The shop—which operates locations in Harbor Point, Mt. Vernon, and Federal Hill—is also rolling out other fall creations, such as a pumpkin-pie drink called “Pumpkin to Talk About” and “Sweater Weather,” which adds a spiced apple twist to a traditional matcha latte.

Iced Apple Crisp Brown Sugar Latte at David and Dad’s Cafe
Housed in a historic bank building downtown, this grand cafe is the perfect place for hearty breakfast platters, deli sandwiches, and delicious fall drinks. Take a sip of their apple crisp latte, featuring brown sugar and oat milk, or try everything pumpkin with their pumpkin latte, pumpkin chai, and pumpkin cold brew.

Maple Brown Butter Caramel Coffee at Dooby’s
Whether you like lattes, cold brews, or teas, add the Mt. Vernon mainstay’s maple browned-butter caramel syrup to your favorite brew for a kick of rich, warm nuttiness. The cafe also offers a range of seasonal coffee flavors including cardamom spice, brown sugar bourbon, and miso caramel.

Pumpkin Pie Latte at Kitsch Cafe
Alright, so we’ve got the PSL, the PCL, and this cute cafe near the Johns Hopkins University campus is highlighting the PPL (pumpkin pie latte). The drink is the perfect mix of pumpkin puree, pumpkin pie spice, vanilla, milk, and espresso. If that’s not sweet enough for you, look for their rotating “frappé of the week,” which highlights unique flavors like the Honey Bun Frappé with ice blended honey, caramel, cream, and cold brew.

Pumpkin Cold Brew with Pumpkin Foam at Luna Garden
Can’t get enough pumpkin? This woman-owned Fells Point shop is brewing a pumpkin cold brew with pumpkin-flavored foam on top.
