Mark McLaughlin and Arch Watkins have been friends since they flew planes in the Navy. They decided to dive into the spirits industry in 2014, when they both realized how dissatisfied they were with their civilian careers after discharge. McLaughlin and Watkins co-founded, and now co-own, Old Line Spirits in Highlandtown, living by its motto, “bold stories, bold spirits.”

When asked why they chose to explore spirits of all alcoholic beverage options, McLaughlin says it was all sparked by intrigue: “Spirits are fun and romantic,” he says. “It’s the idea of putting something in a barrel and having to wait for years to get it out.”

Fast forward to today: Old Line is launching a new iteration of its award-winning American Single Malt Whiskey finished in the distillery’s own Caribbean rum casks—a new and exciting category in the whiskey industry. “It’s an unrepresented category in the U.S., so it’s a great category for us to capitalize on as a company,” McLaughlin says.

Aside from making a rum-finished whiskey that perfectly combines Old Line’s two signature products, what makes the launch truly special is that 100 percent of all proceeds will be donated to the Baltimore Restaurant Relief Fund, which is devoted to rebuilding the local restaurant and hospitality industry in response to COVID-19. With all restaurants being forced to close their dining rooms and solely operate under pickup and delivery service, thousands of workers have been left either unemployed or underemployed.

When asked why Old Line chose to give back to its fellow industry workers, McLaughlin’s answer was simple: “These are people that really support us when they’re working, and we want to support them in these trying times.”

But that’s not all that Old Line has done to give back to the community. The distillery is now operating solely as a hand sanitizer production facility, bottling almost 9,000 gallons each week. Old Line is donating as much as it can to those on the front lines, and selling the rest at a discounted price. As a part of a co-op with several Maryland and Washington, D.C. distilleries, the team hopes to continue production on a larger scale.

“We’re working to provide a critical need,” McLaughlin says. “As long as the need continues, that’s what we intend to do to keep our employees working.”

The new American Single Malt finished in the rum casks is first aged in virgin American oak barrels, so the spirit can soak up the flavor and color of the barrel to its full strength. After aging is concluded, the whiskey is barrel-finished—a trend that is increasing in popularity in the spirits industry. In this process, the whiskey is transferred from the virgin oak into barrels that previously held Old Line’s blend of aged Caribbean rum. The final product is strong and dark in color, with notes of vanilla and caramel.

Bottles are available for curbside pickup at the distillery starting today. Customers can place their orders online, and swing by Wednesday through Friday between 3 and 7 p.m., and on Saturday from 12 to 6 p.m. Talk about treating yourself for a good cause.

We’ve all been doing a lot of cooking lately. So why not celebrate the spring holidays by giving yourself a break from the kitchen prep and cleanup? (And relish the opportunity to support local restaurants, while you’re at it.) Though family celebrations will undoubtedly be a bit different this year, there are plenty of spots whipping up holiday dishes that maintain tradition. Here are some of the local options to choose from:

Baltimore Chef Shop: Continuing its take-home dinners, this Hampden cooking school is offering an Easter package featuring baked ham, scalloped potatoes, green beans, and lemon pound cake. The dinner serves two people, and orders need to be placed by 8 p.m. the night before pickup. They can be placed on the school’s website and picked up on Saturday and Sunday from 3-5 p.m. Customers can add on the hot cross buns make-at-home kit for another traditional Easter recipe. A portion of all proceeds will be donated this week to support Johns Hopkins hospitals.

The Charmery: The Charmery in Hampden and Towson will be celebrating both holidays with “Easter Egg” ice cream pies and pints, and pints of its signature “Matzah Brittle” flavor for Passover. Pies are priced at $30 and pints at $10, with $1 from each item purchased set aside to benefit employees.

The Corner Pantry: Mt. Washington favorite The Corner Pantry is offering a variety of Easter and Passover staples for curbside pickup or carryout.
Four Seasons Hotel: The Four Seasons Hotel will be celebrating Easter with a brunch takeout menu. Customers can choose their choice of an appetizer, salad, entre, side, and dessert to enjoy. A few featured menu items include crab deviled eggs, honey glazed ham, and whipped mashed potatoes.
Julia Lieberman and her two-year-old daughter had been searching for ways to remain entertained during the coronavirus outbreak. With the closure of public areas throughout the state, they, like most families, have been doing all work and learning activities from home.

A teacher herself, Lieberman had been researching projects to do with both her daughter and her students when she discovered the viral trend of hanging artwork in windows through social media. Hanging rainbows, an initiative that started in the United Kingdom, has sparked a global response all over the world. People are now putting teddy bears, sculptures, and other creative works up on display from inside their homes.

Thinking that it was the perfect opportunity to keep both kids and adults in the Hampden community active, she organized the first Outdoor Museum Art Walk last Friday. “I had no idea people would be so excited about it,” Lieberman says.

Through the Hampden Neighbors Facebook page, she is encouraging people to hang artwork in their windows that face the street, so that the community can browse them like an outdoor gallery.

“With little ones it’s great to be able to walk around,” Lieberman says. “Since we can’t go to the park anymore, it’s nice to say to my daughter that we’re going to go look for art in the windows. It’s like a scavenger hunt.”

Lieberman also emphasizes that this doesn’t have to stop once things eventually go back to normal. She hopes that people will continue to participate at their own pace, and will wait and see how the neighborhood maintains the project in the future.

“I hope it gives people something to look forward to,” she says. “It can become part of a routine at a time when routine has been thrown out the window.”

Typically, we only get 365 days in a year to have fun. But, every four years, we have an extra day. For Leap Day 2020, many local breweries and restaurants are celebrating with parties, specials, and new beer releases on Saturday, February 29. Here’s where to make the most of the extra day and enjoy the festivities:

Bmore Brew Bus Tour: The second-annual Bmore Brew Bus Tour, where locals hunt down the best craft beer that Charm City has to offer, is taking place on Saturday. With stops at Guinness, Heavy Seas, Jailbreak, and Crooked Crab breweries, there will be plenty to see and taste. A ticket includes a tour of Guinness, a complimentary beer or flight from each location, round trip transportation, and snacks. Multiple locations. $89.

Checkerspot Brewing Company: Checkerspot in South Baltimore is tapping into the leap year with unlimited pours. The “Big Beer Leap Year” event will bring back limited-edition beers from the past two years. The brewery will open an hour early for VIP admission, and at 1 p.m. for regular admission. Old favorites being served will include “Golden Strongman,” “Jean Quad,” “Barrel Aged Jean Quad,” “Elijah Craig Bourbon Barrel Big Wig Brown,” and the “Wild Turkey Bourbon Barrel Big Wig Brown,” which are all from 2018. Last year’s special beers will include the “High & Mighty IPA” and the “Bear Imperial Porter.” All beers are first come first serve, so be sure to get there early before the taps run dry. 1399 S. Sharp St. $35 regular admission, $50 VIP.

Oliver Brewing Company: At Oliver Brewing Company’s tasting room in East Baltimore, sample five new can releases starting at 12 p.m. to celebrate the extra day of the year. Among them is “I Wish I Was At The Yard,” a dry-hopped pale ale created in collaboration with Monument City Brewing Company. Next up is the “Fruit Can Man V3,” an imperial sour brewed with tart cherry, red currant, and raspberry. “Undulatus” is a hazy IPA with a cream finish. The newest collaboration with Stillwater Artisanal is “The Future Isn’t What It Used To Be,” a double dry-hopped IPA. This duo also collaborated with Chesapeake Cider Company to create the “Apple Cobbler Fruit Shake,” a nitro sour ale with apple, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and milk sugar. With plenty of exciting flavors coming out, Oliver Brewing Company has many options to choose from. Pair your can with a slice from Dizzy Cow Pizzeria, which will be slinging delicious pies all day long. 4216 Shannon Dr.

Diamondback Beer: The celebration at this South Baltimore brewery will double as a release for its new barrel-aged Barleywine, as well as a launch party for its new Tour & Tasting program. Diamondback’s new traditional English Barleywine is aged for 16 months in Tawny Port, red zinfandel, and muscat barrels before being blended together—creating the final product, the “Liquid Richie.” The new Tour & Tasting Program will provide three different chances to experience Diamondback’s brewing process on Saturday. Tour the production facility, experience a guided tasting of four special releases, and bring home a swag bag all for the price of $25. The taproom will be serving $5 “Green Machine” pints all day, and feature live music by Nate & Friends from 2-4 p.m. 1215 E Fort Ave, Suite #008.

Union Craft Brewing: Cleverly honoring the date, Union Craft Brewing will offer an array of beer deals from 2:29-9:29 p.m. on Saturday. Buy two beers for $9 and spend your afternoon soaking up the extra day. With nine beers on tap, you have plenty of time to try them all during this seven-hour event. 1700 W 41st St.

Monument City Brewing Company: This Highlandtown hangout just announced a surprise release party on Saturday for “NOBO,” its New England-style IPA. Overflowing with juicy flavors from its triple hopping, the beer will be available in limited drafts and cases. Starting at 12 p.m., this will be the only drop of the year for “NOBO,” so beer lovers are encouraged to come and get it while it’s available. Monument City will also be filling up its first time capsule, and the team is accepting contributions from the public. The time capsule will be sealed and buried underneath the brewhouse until February 29, 2024, so be sure to return in four years to claim your keepsakes. 1 N Haven St.

Bond Street Social: If a cocktail is your preferred drink of choice, Bond Street Social in Fells Point is ready to supply. The waterfront favorite will be hosting a $28 open bar from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., in which party-goers will be served premium well mixed drinks, domestic bottled beer, and house red and white wines. 901 S Bond St.

As plant-based restaurants continue to crop up all over the country, it seems as though the philosophy of veganism is advertised everywhere. Abstaining from the use of animal products reduces the pressure on the environment and has many health benefits. Baltimore has never been shy about partaking in the movement, and the second-annual Maryland Vegan Restaurant Week, returning February 7-23 this year, aims to further that mission locally.

Samantha Claassen, co-founder of the event, started her own Vegan Restaurant Week at Golden West Cafe in Hampden back in 2012. A few years later, she met Naijha Wright-Brown, owner of The Land of Kush, who wanted to partner to make it bigger.

“It was kismet,” Claassen says. “We thought we could make it city-wide and make it much bigger and broader.”

Claassen and Wright-Brown co-founded Maryland Vegan Restaurant Week shortly after, and the partnership has helped many other local restaurants catch on. With the motto, “something for everyone,” they want all diners to feel equal. Vegan Week encourages Maryland restaurants to create menus that are more inclusive, expanding their horizons to cater to all food restrictions.

“What goes on your plate is one of the most powerful decisions that you can make,” Claasen says. “The modern foodie realizes the power that they have when they make those choices. This echo-effect of positivity has the vegan marketplace continually growing in Baltimore.”

The bi-annual Maryland Vegan Restaurant Week, which was the first to go state-wide, returns this weekend with specials at more than 20 eateries. Participating restaurants have been challenged to showcase their most creative plant-based menu items, and this time around, exciting pop-ups will also be happening throughout the week. (Mark your calendar for a brunch at R. House on February 9 and a Valentine’s Day bingo night at L’Eau de Vie Organic Brasserie on February 14.) A portion of all profits will be donated to BARCS’ mission of helping animals in need.

With plenty of restaurants participating, here are a few recommendations to get you started:

Where to Take Your Vegan Friends

Golden West Cafe: Claasen’s Hampden cafe serves cuisine rooted in traditional New Mexican specialties and sourced from local producers. While its traditional menu serves a wide array of vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options, the team will be whipping up a vegan-specific menu for Restaurant Week. Diners can indulge in Oreo French toast, a pimento cauliflower sandwich, or the Beyond/Impossible sausage and frites.
Mother’s Federal Hill Grille: While best known for their Purple Patio events during Ravens home games, Mother’s in Federal Hill will still be celebrating the Super Bowl and serving up game-day favorites.
