Oct. 20: World Food Festival: Mera x Fadensonnen

Fadensonnen, 3 W. 23rd St. 5-9 p.m. Free.

On a snowy night last January, chef Iman Alshehab—co-founder of Mera Kitchen Collective, a co-op that empowers refugees to tap into their culinary heritage—cooked and served shawarma out of a food truck for the first time while parked at Fadensonnen. That evening, crowds of people came out to the beer garden and natural wine bar to sample her food, and since then, Mera’s chefs have hosted rotating pop-ups at the popular Old Goucher spot. This Sunday, chefs Iman, Emilienne, Anna, and Mona will come together to prepare a meal in Fadensonnen’s courtyard, featuring two new dishes from each chef. Don’t miss the chance to try new authentic eats inspired by cuisines from across the world, including dishes like Syrian lamb kibbeh, Salvadoran chicken soup, and lemon tahini shrimp.

Oct. 19: OktoBEARfest

The Maryland Zoo, 1 Safari Pl. 12-5 p.m. $29-69.

The Maryland Zoo is known for its wide variety of furry, slimy, and flying friends, but we also love it for its boozy fundraisers that make it (a little too) easy to support the local institution. This fall-inspired beer festival offers unlimited samplings of more than 50 seasonal brews, along with tons of eats, wares by area artisans, and the chance to get up close and personal with a few of the animals.

Oct. 18-19: The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Creative Alliance, 3134 Eastern Ave. 7:30 & 10:30 p.m. $12-15.

We’re already shivering with antici…pation for this interactive screening of the weird and wild cult classic at Creative Alliance. Tighten your garters for a night filled with the traditional movie callbacks and costume contests, as well as special burlesque, drag, and tap performances by beloved local drag queens Betty O’Hellno, Venus Fastrada, and Baby. Come up to the Highlandtown lab and see what’s on the slab during this Halloween tradition that’s sure to leave you wanting more, more, more.

Oct. 19: Off the Cuff: Brahms Symphony No. 4

Joesph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, 1212 Cathedral St. 7-9 p.m. $25-80.

It’s only been a few weeks since the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra returned to the Meyerhoff after three months of tension between the symphony’s management and musicians over contract disputes, and this Saturday’s performance of Brahms’ Fourth Symphony is a fitting nod to both the past and the future of the orchestra. After watching world-renowned conductor Marin Alsop lead the musicians through this 20th century masterpiece, stick around to sip on brews by Peabody Heights, snack on eats by Midnite Confection’s Cupcakery and Noona’s, and listen to live music by local artist Brooks Long as you talk with fellow music-lovers about the evening’s performances.

Oct. 19: Baltimore Running Festival

Paca & Camden Sts. 8 a.m. $60-280.

One thing that we love about citywide festivals is there’s usually something for everyone, and the Baltimore Running Festival is the perfect example. Since this event features five different events ranging from an all-ages 5K to the BaltiMORON-a-thon, runners of all skill levels can come together and celebrate the beauty of hitting the pavement. There’s still time to register, so secure your spot at the starting line and get ready to show off that crab-shaped finishing medal.

Locations vary. Free. When Margaret De Arcangelis walks past a building—whether it’s a new high-rise office or a centuries-old home—she’s always curious to know what’s inside. That sense of appreciation for local structures of all sizes and ages is what led her to become the committee chair of Doors Open Baltimore, an annual event where more than 55 spaces open their doors to the public. De Arcangelis says that while many people only associate Baltimore’s architecture with rowhomes, Doors Open (this year on October 5-6) gives visitors the chance to explore the different types of buildings, museums, and historic houses that make up the city. “Through this event, people ‘catch the bug’ and get excited about these buildings,” she says. “If we get people interested in them now, we hope that curiosity continues throughout the rest of the year.”—KP

This year’s theme, Modern Nouveau, takes inspiration from an exhibition of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the architect who influenced the art nouveau movement, that’s premiering at the Mount Vernon museum this month. Start the evening with a cocktail reception followed by a gourmet dinner in the galleries, and cap off the night with late-night drinks and dancing in the Sculpture Court. Be sure to grab tickets early, as this party-for-a-cause experience is almost guaranteed to sell out.

We ask Bobby Levin of Fleet Feet and Megan DiGregorio of the Falls Road Running Store to give us tips and tricks to prep and recover from running a race.

Prep

TRAIN

• Start the training process three to five months before your race.

• Begin a “tapering period” during which you reduce the volume of your training mileage two to three weeks before the race to avoid injuries or burning out.

FUEL

• Have a balanced diet that aims to hit every part of the food pyramid. But especially concentrate on protein and carbs.

• Hydrate your body with electrolytes and plenty of water.

SLEEP

• Try to get at least seven to eight hours of sleep every night.

• In the two to three weeks before the race, try to get more sleep so your body is completely rested for race day.

FOCUS

• Visualize yourself crossing the finish line and completing the race to calm any pre-marathon nerves.

• Try light yoga to stretch out those muscles and relax your mind.

Recover

Move

• Keep moving around with a light jog or walk to avoid cramping up right after the race.

• Throw on a pair of recovery compression socks for optimal comfort after the race.

Refuel

• Don’t fight your cravings! Take in some calories within 30 to 45 minutes after completing the race.

• Rehydrating your body with water and electrolytes is crucial to ensuring proper recovery.

Unwind

• You might be hungrier than normal after the race, so feel free to indulge in satisfying meals.

• Try some light exercise to keep your body active but your muscles relaxed.

Rally

• Take a week off from running to allow your body to recover.

• Don’t rush back into long runs. Your body has to build itself back up to that point!

Every fall, more than 20,000 runners from all over the East Coast train to compete in the annual Baltimore Running Festival. The marathon mania kicks off this Saturday, October 20, at 7:30 a.m. and includes a 5K race, a half-marathon, a relay race, and a full marathon. But even if you aren’t planning on slipping on your sneakers and running the 26.2 miles, there are tons of ways you can celebrate with your fit friends.

From the best places to watch the race and the rowdiest post-race parties, to pre-race events and recovery get-togethers, here’s how to participate in the Baltimore Running Festival without breaking a sweat.

Pre-Race Receptions

They’ll also be food, drink, and fitness samples from local vendors. 2601 Port Covington

Lululemon Shake Out Run: Get ready for race day on October 18 with a fun run led by athletic ambassadors Nick Rodricks and Esther Collinetti starting at 6 p.m. Afterwards, the complimentary local brews, tasty bites, and good vibes will get you fueled up and ready to race (or cheer). 820 Aliceanna St., 410-528-5485

Spirited Spectator Spots

Baltimore Running Festival Cheer Station: Hosted by Checkerspot Brewing Company and November Project, this cheer station will surely bring the noise. The event starts at 9 a.m., and there will be trampolines, water balloons, pumpkins, and live music performances from Brad Kolodner and Stephen Pawlak. 900 E 33rd St.

Lululemon Cheer Station: Want to support your running friends and family with a fitness-loving crowd? Head out to Lululemon’s cheer station right in the middle of the marathon course. They’ll supply the cheesy signs, coffee, and the D.J. so that you can focus on the chants and cheers. President Street roundabout in Harbor East

Under Armour launches new subscription service.
Local athletic apparel behemoth Under Armour is adding a subscription service where consumers receive a box of products and keep only what they want. A la companies like Stitch Fix and Birch Box, consumers can opt into the service every 30, 60, or 90 days. To receive an ArmourBox, users complete a personal profile that asks about fitness goals, workout settings, exercise preferences, style aesthetic, and sizing. An Under Armour stylist then hand picks 4-6 pieces of gear that the user has a week to try on and decide what they want to keep before they get charged.

“ArmourBox provides yet another level of customization and convenience,” UA said on its website. “For example, subscribers who say they run a certain number of miles each week are sent gear that we know from our Connected Fitness customers and our e-commerce data is frequently purchased and positively reviewed by other people who run those distances.”

Baltimore Running Festival takes off this weekend.
Speaking of running a certain number of miles, the 17th annual Baltimore Running Festival takes place this Saturday. There will be some changes to the marathon this year, including a new finish line at the Inner Harbor along Pratt Street instead of Camden Yards. In addition, the aforementioned Under Armour is no longer a title sponsor, but is still providing t-shirts for all the participants. And this will the first year that Catherine Pugh, who first conceived of a marathon in Baltimore nearly 20 years ago, will be mayor during the event.

“Seeing the streets of Baltimore filled with runners is something I look forward to each October,” Mayor Pugh said at a press conference. “When we started out, we knew we wanted a marathon, a team marathon, half-marathon, and we wanted a 5K because we wanted families to come to Baltimore.”

Of course, be aware of all the road closures and delays that will take place Saturday morning for the full marathon, half marathon, and 5K.

Ravens have a little bit of hope going into Sunday.
We’ll be the first ones to admit that the start to the Ravens season has left us feeling underwhelmed. But going into Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings, consider these positive signs of hope:

The team has looked better on the road. London aside and, okay, by a very small margin, the Ravens have performed better away (2-1) than at home (1-2).

Brandon Williams is practicing again. The Ravens defensive tackle’s foot injury has prevented him from playing in the last four games. And while a lot of other factors come into play, it’s certainly no coincidence that our defense is suffering. (The team allowed 170 rushing yards in the first two games with him and 678 in four games without.) But he practiced on Wednesday and will most likely play on Sunday. However, understandably so, Williams doesn’t want all the pressure. “I’m just a guy,” he told The Sun. “I’m just a guy who is working to get back on the field. That’s all I’m doing.”

This could be a redemption game for Mike Wallace. Going against his former team the Minnesota Vikings could prove to be good motivation for the wide receiver. While in Minnesota, Wallace had career lows (39 receptions and 473 yards) and didn’t have a single catch longer than 34 yards. “It was humbling just because I’ve never been in a situation like that where I didn’t get the ball or wasn’t put in position to make those explosive plays,” he told the Twin Cities Pioneer Press. Let’s hope he makes some explosive plays this Sunday!

Carmelo Anthony came out swinging in season debut.
Baltimore native Carmelo Anthony made a good first impression with the Oklahoma City Thunder by scoring a 3-pointer to begin the game against his former team, the New York Knicks. He went on to have a strong second quarter, scoring 22 on 8-of-20 shooting in a 105-84 win over the Knicks. “Yeah, that chapter’s closed,” he told ESPN. “No more Knicks talk. We can just focus on the Thunder and moving forward and what we have to do as a team and organization.” Seems like he’s pretty comfortable in his new squad.

Oct. 21: Shuck Like A Pro

Sandlot, 1000 Willis St. 1 & 4 p.m. $30.

This Saturday afternoon, experience the best of both seasons with the beach vibes of the Sandlot harbor-front hangout and the R-month rewards of oyster season. Gather with fellow ostreaphiles and enjoy a step-by-step shucking demonstration by Scott Budden of Orchard Point Oyster Comany on the Eastern Shore. Master the craft of cracking open these delightful local delicacies—made extra earthy and sweet from their northern bay birthplace—and slurp a few down as Budden discusses oyster farming and reef restoration, with a take-home gift of your very own shucking knife and gloves to boot. All the while, sip Spike Gjerde’s brand-new Snake Oil lager and support the Oyster Recovery Partnership, the region’s leading nonprofit dedicated to restoring local oysters.

Key Brewing Company, 2500 Grays Rd., Dundalk. 2-6 p.m. Free. 410-477-2337.

In Baltimore, breweries and benefits often go hand in hand as a means of nurturing the local community. On Saturday, Key Brewing Company, in collaboration with Checkerspot Brewing and Stillwater Artisanal, will be launching a Landing Bolts lager to support a new section of the redesigned Rash Field Park known as Jake’s Skatepark. This new skate area will pay tribute to Key Brewing co-owner’s son Jake, a young South Baltimore boy who loved skating but tragically lost his life because of a phone-distracted driver six years ago. This weekend, all proceeds from the Landing Bolts release will go towards its creation, so join the local skating community for boarding tricks and grub from Blue Pit BBQ and Chuck’s Trading Post.

Oct. 19-21: Rocky Horror Picture Show

Creative Alliance, 3134 Eastern Ave. Fri.-Sat. 7:30 p.m., Sun. 7:30 & 10:30 p.m. $12-17. 410-276-1651.

With Halloween nearly upon us, there’s no better time to watch the 1975 cult classic that is the Rocky Horror Picture Show. For three nights at the Creative Alliance, dress up as your best Frank, Janet, or Riff Raff and enjoy a screening of the film that spawned an audience-participation phenomenon. The twisted comedy is set in a mysterious castle on a dark and stormy night, with wild characters, elaborate rock songs, and a plot that thrills, no matter how many times you’ve seen it. Join local burlesque dancers Betty O’Hellno, Bunny Vicious, Tapitha Kix, and Whiskey Joy, to name a few, for a punk-rock singalong to songs like “Sweet Transvestite” and “Hot Patootie, Bless My Soul,” with themed cocktails served at the bar all night.

Oct. 21: Sean K. Preston

Cat Eye’s Pub, 1730 Thames St. 9 p.m. Free. 410-276-9866.

At first glance, Sean K. Preston, a Fells Point regular and beloved Baltimore artist, looks like a classic country singer with his cowboy hat and sometimes-acoustic guitar. But underneath that outlaw appearance is a mix of musical styles waiting to be executed by his fast-flying fingers and gritty vocals that are as classic and rebellious as Johnny Cash. At Cats Eye Pub, hear the local songwriter alongside his band, the Loaded Pistols, for a night of blues, punk, country, and old-school rock-and-roll as Preston ruminates on topics of love, loss, and wanderlust.

Locations & times vary, starting at 7 a.m. $15-280. 410-605-9381.

This Saturday, whether you’re a diehard runner or recreational jogger, it’s time to grab your sneakers and hit the streets during Baltimore’s 17th running festival. From team relays and 5Ks to half and full marathons, there’s something for everyone in this run around town, which fills the city with thousands and thousands of athletes. We even recommend standing on the sidelines as an onlooker, because this beloved annual race is truly a sight to behold.

We can’t
believe it’s been a year since our new favorite hangout was born. At the Mount Vernon Marketplace, we’ve found ourselves playing Ping-Pong and taking shots of
fire hooch from Pinch Dumplings, dancing to Rob Macy’s Save Your Soul mixes
with Taps Fill Station beers in hand, and indulging in one too many (if there
was such a thing) oysters and shrimp salad sandwiches at The Local Oyster.
Within 12 short months, the food hall has become a neighborhood staple, be it
for business lunches, first-date dinners, or happy hours with friends. This
weekend, celebrate this awesome addition to our city, with a big birthday cake
from Edible Flavors, live music by the one and only Rufus Roundtree and Da
B’more Brass Factory, and food and drink specials all night.

Das Bier Haus
has been a welcome addition to the band of sports bars that make up Federal
Hill (we even named it “Best Beer Bar” this year).
With a wide selection of German ales, sausages and schnitzel, and boots to
boot, the South Baltimore beer hall has quickly become a gathering grounds and
brunch destination for the local community. This Saturday, toast the month of
October (and the end of Baltimore Beer Week) with giant steins, a bevy of
bratwurst, and Bear Pong tournaments towards the end of Light Street. Engage in
a sausage- eating contest, play a round of cornhole, and enjoy up a cool,
alfresco, fall day.

For the fifth
year, the Maryland Institute College of Art and the Maryland Film Festival
present the Sweaty Eyeballs, a showcase of independent animations. These
narrative, experimental, and music video works were made by local, national,
and international artists using a variety of techniques—including stop motion,
hand drawing, and CGI. In this weird and wonderful display of creativity, see short
films by MICA alum-turned PBS design Lauren Puglisi, Los Angeles-based animator
Miranda Javid (who has shown at the BMA and who recently made this mesmerizing
single “Become Younger” by Baltimore band Peals), Sundance Film
Festival-awarded Korean filmmaker Kangmin Kim, and German illustrators Volker

Even the most serious country music haters are now putting on their cowboy hats for the boot-scooting Southern genre that’s made its way into the mainstream. Don your bandanas and cutoff jeans to hear big names like the party-starting Little Big Town (“Pontoon,” “Day Drinking”) and up-and-comers like the dynamic duo LOCASH (which is one-part Baltimore native). After 15 years, local country music radio station 93.1 FM has turned this swaggering Southern music festival into a favorite fall tradition.

Maryland Fleet Week and Air Show
Oct. 8-17. Various locations. Between our historic, national-anthem-inspiring fort and a certain highly decorated Olympian, Baltimore is no stranger to patriotism. It’s only fitting, then, that—for the first time in history—Charm City will host the Maryland Fleet Week and Air Show to celebrate the rich naval heritage of the Chesapeake Bay, as well as the state’s contribution to the defense of the United States. The seventh of its kind in the country, and a descendant of the 2012 Sailabration and 2014 Star-Spangled Spectacular, the festival will feature a full 10 days of red, white, and blue . Join hundreds of thousands of onlookers as historic ships arrive and thrive in the city’s waters, accompanied by the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, plus dozens of maritime-themed events. At the Inner Harbor and in Fells and Locust points, board the decks of navy vessels and schooners, catch more than 40 boats competing in the Constellation Cup Regatta, and check out the Fleet Week Fair, with regional food and live music by local and military bands. At Martin State Airport in Middle River, there will be aircrafts on display, both on land and in midair, with flight takeoffs, landings, and pilot autographs. But back where it all began—where a star-shaped fortress protected the city from British attack by the bay—celebrations will abound at Fort McHenry, with ship salutes, sailor meet-and-greets, and living history programs. Just don’t miss the main event, as the legendary Blue Angels fly over the grounds that inspired those iconic lyrics, long ago: “O say can you see . . . ”

Lions, and tigers, and beers—oh my! This weekend, spend your crisp, sunny Saturday at the Maryland Zoo for its annual animal version of a booze-riddled Oktoberfest. Grab a glass and sample some 30-plus seasonal brews, including locals like The Brewer’s Art, Flying Dog, and Monument City Brewing, and get down to the Pennsylvania polka of John Stevens’ Doubleshot. Soak up your pumpkin ale with German-inspired food and then scramble out to see the penguins, as tickets include all-day admission to the zoo. And don’t worry about driving: between 11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., there will be free shuttles running to and from Penn Station.

You know the buxom blonde. The sky-high eyebrows. The left cheek beauty mark. Maybe, most notably, that bright red, form fitting, Pink Flamingos dress. Divine became a Baltimore legend through such iconic roles as Babs Johnson in the aforementioned John Waters film and Edna Turnblad in Hairspray. The actor, musician, and Dreamlander drag queen from Towson would have been 70 this month and this weekend, on the eve of his birthday, the city is coming together to celebrate his legacy. At WTMD, hear local musicians Bobby E Lee and the Sympathizers, Pure Junk, Sweepstakes, Cowabunga Pizza Time, and Ellen Degenerate perform Divine’s songs and see Single Carrot Theatre, Iron Crow Theatre, Cricket Arrison & Melissa LaMartina re-enact some of his most memorable scenes. It will all be broadcast live on 89.7 FM, with proceeds benefitting the station.

Oct. 16: Al Rogers Jr. & Drew Scott

Get to know Al Rogers Jr. Whether he’s
being named one of The Sun’s
10 under 30, starting a dance party at the Creative Alliance, mingling with the
crowd at Sowebo, or getting down at The Crown, the young artist has a fresh style that
leaves you wanting more. On his new project with Blacksage’s Drew Scott, the self-proclaimed
lover/creator/ dreamer conjures up his own world, “Luvadocious,” where God is a woman, “love isn’t feared,” and
“pursuing your passion is accepted.” His dynamic wordplays are backed by
Scott’s skilled beats, culminating in a sort of experimental, chill-wave
hip-hop. Rogers swings his voice like freestyle jazz, dancing between
playful, fast-paced spits and soulful, sexy swoons, and he skips the tired,
typical raps (women, cash, cars) to approach grander questions (love, life,
himself). Each quest is imbued with spirit and swagger, spreading the feel-good vibes that he likes to call swooz. Listen for yourself
this Friday night, with
special guests from Scott’s other project with Josephine Olivia, as well as
Bmore Club paragon Blaqstarr, Trill Natured, Malik Ferraud, and Joy Postell
with the Breedz.

“The truth is, I really don’t like running. I just like the way I feel when I’m done.

I am 48 years old. I have been running, basically, since I met my
wife a little more than 25 years ago. She was a runner, and if I wanted
to keep up with her, I had to run.

I’ve been doing the Baltimore Running Festival every year for the
past 10 years—since it began. I was already running marathons, so I
said, ‘Here I am in Baltimore, might as well run the Baltimore marathon
as well.’

I’m supposed to run five days a week. I know what I’ve got to do and I have training regimens to do it; I just don’t do it.

I’m definitely more of a morning runner. I run on the NCR trail and I
also run around the Loch Raven Reservoir to get some hill action. To
me, the whole key to finishing 26.2 miles is you’ve got to run three
20-mile races before the marathon date. If you don’t run three 20s, then
you’re not going to be prepared.

The marathon is a fantastic tour of the city. The best way to see any
city is running through the streets: You see neighborhoods. You see
offices. You see where people shop. You see where people drink coffee.
You see parts of the city that you can’t see from driving through it.
The thing I enjoy the most is running through Fort McHenry. I would just
say that is truly inspiring.

I would not run these races if not for the citizens of Baltimore.
Baltimore’s residents have gone from ‘I hate those blasted runners for
shutting down the city streets’ to ‘This is an inconvenience’ to ‘Well,
here come those crazy runners again. . . . We might as well cheer them
on!’ Their support is great and much appreciated.

I think my best finishing time was 4:45. I follow a pacer for the
first half, and then I slack off. I try to do a reverse-split, which is
where you go faster the second half than the first, but I’ve never been
able to do that because I get tired. I always have a great half
marathon, and then at mile 13, I’m like, ‘Oh God, I’ve still got to run
another 13 miles.’

The key is to start in your appointed time. If you’re a 10-minute
mile person, don’t start with the three-hour marathoners, because what’s
going to happen is they’re going to pull away and then you’re going to
have 2,000 people trying to pass you.

I guess the craziest thing I’ve seen are lots of people going to the
bathroom in bushes. The worst thing I’ve seen is when the organizers ran
out of water a couple years ago because someone stole the water during
the race. Somebody had driven behind the delivery truck and stolen all
of the water, so the people who were running slow, when they got to the
water stop, there was no water, and that really pissed a lot of us off.

I hate going by relay stations because you’re chugging along, and
then these guys bolt out like it’s a horse race and shoot by you, and
it’s very discouraging.

The worst part is when people double back on you. So, if I’m coming
down mile nine and they’re going past [in the other direction] at mile
13, they’re four miles ahead of me. It’s like, ‘Oh, crap.’

When I’m running, I’m really just thinking about the finish, thinking
about getting it over with and done. Eye on the prize. I get the
adrenaline rush toward the end, when you come down Eutaw Street, through
Camden Yards. That’s pretty neat because you’re running along the
cobblestone, you can see the finish, everyone’s screaming and yelling
and cheering, and you’re almost done.

My first thought when I finish is, ‘Where’s the beer?’ I’ll tell you
why, because when I finish, the water’s been sitting out there for six
hours, the Gatorade’s been sitting out there for six hours, it’s a hot
day, and the only thing cold is the beer. The best beer I’ve ever had in
my life was after finishing a race.

The best feeling I’ve ever had, personally, in my life is the first
time I finished a marathon. There’s no feeling quite like that. I’ve
spent hundreds of hours preparing for this, and now I’m done. But the
flip side is that I’m exhausted. I go home and take a nap.

I get stiffer and stiffer after all the long runs. You get old, your
body starts to ache, but when you see 70- and 80-year-olds crossing the
finish line, I think, ‘Well if they can do it, I can do it.’”
