It wasn’t for a lack of effort.

Former Maryland governor Martin O’Malley announced that he was suspending his presidential bid after failing to win over Iowa democratic primary voters, earning less than 1 percent of the delegate tally in the state’s caucus.

As O’Malley noted in ending his struggling campaign Monday night, “Iowa has been like a second home” for the 53-year-old candidate for the past year. Nonetheless, an inability to connect with Hawkeye state voters on the ground; the unexpected success of Sen. Bernie Sanders’ progressive message; unrest in Baltimore, where O’Malley, of course, served as mayor; as well as mediocre debate performances against rivals with more national experience—notably frontrunner and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton—kept O’Malley from registering more than low single digits in polls all primary season.

The winner, however, of the Iowa primary for the Democrats remained up in the air late Monday night, with Clinton and Sanders essentially splitting the vote and delegate tally.

On the Republican ledger, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz was the clear winner, with 28 percent of the GOP vote. He was followed by businessman Donald Trump with 24 percent and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio at 23 percent.

Former Johns Hopkins neurosurgeon Ben Carson, a political newcomer, who at one time led in the Iowa polls, fell to fourth, registering 9 percent of the tally.

Carson’s slip in the Iowa polls in late November, while certainly disappointing to his supporters, was not completely unexpected by Maryland GOP observers.

“Politics is a contact sport and Ben Carson is not contact person—he’s a nice guy and a genius in his field,” said Joe Custer, executive director of the Maryland Republican Party.

Custer, in an interview Friday, said that he thought Rubio was picking up momentum with more people in the Republican establishment getting behind his candidacy in recent weeks—which was reflected in subsequent Iowa numbers.

Neither Custer and Greg Kline, of the blog Red Maryland, offered support for Trump’s campaign, doubting the real estate developer’s commitment to conservative causes. “It’s very disconcerting,” said Kline, a Cruz supporter, of the former reality TV star’s popularity among the GOP electorate. “He connects with people [who are frustrated with the direction of the country], but he’s a very imperfect vessel. He could be very damaging to conservative principles.”

Towson University communications studies professor Richard Vatz, a longtime, conservative political observer, expressed similarly strong reservations about Trump’s campaign, adding that he’s backing Rubio at this point.

On the other side, Vatz, though certainly not a Sanders supporter, said it’s easy to see why the 74-year-old senator’s populist economic agenda and campaign has surpassed expectations: “He’s authentic,” Vatz says. “There’s no political trickery. He says what he means and that’s that. If you don’t agree, he says ‘fine.’ He doesn’t say one thing to one group of people and then something else to another group of people.”

Todd Eberly, director of Public Policy Studies at St. Mary’s College, said he finds Sanders success to date even more surprising than the rise of Trump—a political rookie—in national polls. But he puts part of the blame at Clinton’s feet.

“It’s amazing to me that she’s making the same mistake she made in 2008, which is running a [a centrist] general election campaign in Democratic primaries,” Eberly said.

In national polls, however, as well as in Maryland, where she out-tallied Sanders by 13 percent (40-27 percent) in the most recent Gonzales poll, Clinton still maintains a healthy lead.

Trump—despite the aforementioned concerns among some state GOP activists—topped the Gonzales poll in Maryland, garnering 32 percent of the Republican vote. He was followed Cruz (15 percent), Rubio (13.6 percent] and Carson (9.3 percent.)

Up next: the New Hampshire primary scheduled for Feb. 9.

Our chance to weigh-in on all this in the Maryland primaries? Not until April 26.

We have to go back nearly 50 years to another April, in 1968–after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.–to find a time when the city dealt with a
crisis comparable to the one it faced this past spring. The riots and public uprising that followed the death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray from injuries
endured while in police custody shook Baltimore to its core and changed the way the world saw us–and we saw ourselves. Gray’s death–ruled a homicide by
the state medical examiner’s office–lit a fuse that continued to burn for days, fueled by decades of social and economic injustice in many of the city’s
    poorest African-American neighborhoods.

Gray’s death on April 19, following a week in a coma after suffering a severe spinal-cord injury–allegedly during a so-called “rough ride” in a police
transport van–sparked two weeks of unrest, including the violent night of Monday, April 27, that culminated in hundreds of arrests, injuries to numerous
Baltimore police officers, and the destruction of dozens of local businesses. During the surreal aftermath, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake implemented a
citywide curfew and Gov. Larry Hogan deployed heavily armed Maryland National Guard troops and armored vehicles to patrol downtown.

Of course, Gray’s death hadn’t occurred in a vacuum, but came on the heels of the widely publicized deaths of black men at the hands of police officers in
Ferguson, MO; Staten Island, NY; Cleveland, OH; and elsewhere. In the months leading up to the unrest, alarming local police-brutality issues also were
raised in compelling reporting by The Sun’s Mark Puente. Subsequent protests ultimately led to the firing of Baltimore Police Commissioner Anthony
Batts and likely influenced Rawlings-Blake’s decision not to seek re-election.

One difference in Baltimore, as opposed to the aforementioned cities, is that six police officers–whose trials remain in various stages–were quickly
charged for their alleged roles in Gray’s death by then-newly elected city state’s attorney Marilyn Mosby.

Kevin Davis, the city’s new Police Commissioner, recently told Baltimore that he hopes 2015 will mark a turning point in relations between the
police department and aggrieved communities–and the city as a whole.

    It’s not every day
that a city state’s attorney becomes a national celebrity. But Marilyn Mosby’s speedy indictments of six police officers in the death of Freddie Gray and
her self-assured announcement of those charges at a frenzied press conference in front of the city’s War Memorial Building, thrust the attractive,
35-year-old mother of two into the limelight just months into her tenure. For better or worse, Mosby subsequently appeared in the pages of Vogue
in a shoot by famed fashion and art photographer Annie Leibovitz, and gave interviews to Cosmopolitan and Marie Claire. She also took the
stage alongside her husband, City Councilman and now-mayoral candidate Nick Mosby, during Prince’s Rally 4 Peace concert at Royal Farms Arena. Whether
Marilyn Mosby is ultimately viewed as a heroine or another ambitious, over-reaching politician will likely depend on how her office handles the cases
    against the officers.

After the death of Freddie Gray
    from injuries

suffered while in police custody, Baltimore saw a surge in homicides the likes of which it hasn’t witnessed since the 1990s. Almost inconceivably, the city
matched 2014’s homicide total of 211 on August 19 when a man with a bullet wound was found inside a vacant house not far from the Pennsylvania Avenue CVS
store that burned in the riots. While it’s impossible to say with certainty what has driven the increased violence–also witnessed in other cities across
the U.S. this year–Baltimore had recorded a typical number of homicides (65) prior to the unrest. Afterward, however, a four-decade high of 43 murders in
May was followed with 45 killed in July. By November, the tally was 285, putting the city close to the record pace of 1993 when 353 people were murdered,
and once again placing Baltimore among the most dangerous cities in the country.

In a stunning turn of events,
Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake announced in September that she would not seek re-election in the 2016 mayoral race, saying that she would dedicate the
remainder of her term to helping the city recover from the Freddie Gray unrest. Many suggested that she was simply bowing out of a race she could no longer
win. But whatever her motives, the announcement threw already-announced candidates–including former Mayor Sheila Dixon, State Senator Catherine Pugh, and
City Councilman Carl Stokes–into overdrive and opened the door for other hopefuls. In late October, City Councilman Nick Mosby (also the husband of city
state’s attorney Marilyn Mosby) entered the race. Then, in November, David Warnock, a venture capitalist and the chairman of the Greater Baltimore
Committee, declared his candidacy. It’s impossible to tell who will prevail

in the April 26 Democratic primary, which, in heavily Democratic Baltimore, amounts to the general election–but we’ve sure got ourselves a horserace.

Anyone who followed Gov. Larry Hogan’s
campaign shouldn’t have been surprised when he canceled Baltimore’s planned, $2.9 billion mass-transit project in June. Hogan had said all along that he
didn’t support the decade-in-the-making, 14-mile, east-west Red Line effort. When he hired Pete Rahn, a road builder from New Mexico, as his transportation
secretary, the die was cast. Still, Hogan’s official rejection of $900 million in approved federal funding for the light rail system seemed to catch
Baltimore’s elected leaders off guard, while delivering a crushing blow to a city in need of good news and economic development. When the Hogan
administration later released its state road and highway improvement plans–in large part funded from Red Line savings–and Baltimore was left off the map,

it seemed a telling slip that revealed the governor’s political agenda.

    Baseball has been played
professionally in this country since the 1800s, so it’s rare to hear about any unprecedented event in the sport. But 2015 was a year of firsts for
Baltimore. After canceling two previous Orioles games, the league announced that the April 29 game against the Chicago White Sox would be played in a
closed stadium–a first in MLB history. This was, of course, days after protests and riots damaged businesses surrounding Camden Yards, and MLB
Commissioner Rob Manfred said, “these decisions are in the best interests of fan safety and the deployment of city resources.” Closed to the public, the
    only people inside the

stadium were players, staff, and media (more national media than we’ve ever seen at Camden Yards, including during a playoff series). The entire experience
was surreal, but the strangest thing was what you suddenly could hear: players cheering from the dugouts, outfielders calling for balls, umps making
third-strike calls, and balls smacking into fielders’ gloves. Not surprisingly, Birdland couldn’t be tamed completely that day, as fans–just outside the
left-center field gates–chanted “O-R-I-O-L-E-S” and steadily cheered their team to an 8 to 2 win.

“It’s not an easy time for anybody right now. It doesn’t matter what race you are. We need this game to be played, but we need this city to heal

Only months after his upset victory over then-sitting Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown, Gov. Larry Hogan announced he had been diagnosed with a “very aggressive”
cancer. In a June press conference, Hogan said he was told by doctors that the B-cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma had spread quickly to his neck, chest, groin,
and abdomen. He also had been told, however, that he had a “strong chance of survival,” and he vowed to continue his duties while undergoing treatment. And
he has, winning the admiration of the public: A Goucher College poll released in October found 54 percent of those surveyed felt favorably about Hogan, a
21 point increase from the college’s previous poll in February. Those are pretty good numbers in

a state where Democrats outnumber Republicans 2 to 1. The former real-estate executive, 59, who was elected on a promise to curb spending and roll back tax
increases, recently completed his last round of chemotherapy, and now hopes to regain his strength–and his hair.

    In a move that shocked
many Marylanders, long-serving Democratic U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski announced on March 2 that she would not be seeking a sixth term. The Highlandtown
native, a social worker-turned-U.S.-Representative-turned-Senator, has served in Congress longer than any other woman in history, and is beloved for her
unpretentious, dogged, and feisty ways. Known as the Dean of the Women, she serves as a mentor to other women in the Senate and was also the first woman to
chair the prestigious Senate Appropriations Committee, where she is now the ranking member. Her announcement left local politicos scrambling and, so far,
only two candidates–U.S. Representatives Donna Edwards and Chris Van Hollen–have thrown their hats into the ring. (U.S. Representative Elijah Cumming
also hasn’t ruled it out.) In a way, this makes sense. The diminutive Mikulski may have small feet, but she has enormous shoes to fill.

The rain streaked down that mid-May
afternoon–and then, so did American Pharoah. Baltimore watched with baited breath as the Kentucky Derby-winning colt took an almost immediate lead and
barreled down a swampy Pimlico track toward the 140th Preakness Stakes’ winner’s circle–and eventually the Belmont Stakes and the elusive Triple Crown.
Forgetting the weather, the record-setting crowd went wild and jockey Victor Espinoza beamed as he slowed to a canter, thrusting his crop triumphantly in
the air. In a time of

speculation that the race might move to Laurel Park and just a few weeks after the social upheaval that followed the death of Freddie Gray, it was, despite

industrial area in early 2015 and has announced big plans for the under-utilized commercial/industrial hub. These include a new campus for Plank’s booming
sportswear company, which last year earned revenues in excess of $3 billion and is outgrowing its Tide Point headquarters. Eventually, the project will
include mixed-use development as well, such as an Under Armour retail store and residential units, but first Plank will be mixing up some good hooch: A
whiskey distillery slated to open in late 2016 will produce Sagamore Spirit whiskey brand. The distillery complex also will include a 10,000-square-foot
restaurant and a barn that will house the city’s mounted police unit. Public records say Plank paid about $90 million for the tract, which is off
Interstate 95 on the Middle Branch of the Patapsco River. Currently, it is the site of a Walmart.

    We call this an upgrade.

    “Today, I have instructed
Secretary [of Public Safety & Correctional Services, Stephen T.] Moyer to immediately shut down the Baltimore City Men’s Detention Center,” Gov. Hogan
said in a July 30 press conference outside the turreted jail that towers ominously over East Baltimore. And with that, a corruption-plagued,
vermin-infested chapter in Baltimore’s history came to an abrupt end. By late August, the remaining inmates at the state-run jail had been moved to other
facilities. Though Hogan’s announcement ruffled a few feathers–Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake was caught unaware and Hogan wasn’t shy about blaming the
jail’s failures on previous administrations–few quibbled with the act. Some parts of the jail pre-date the Civil War, and it showed. Plus, it was a hive
of corruption. Most recently, the leader of the Black Guerilla Family gang had impregnated guards and run a drug-smuggling operation while incarcerated.
For most, closing the jail wasn’t a matter of good-bye so much as it was good riddance.

The past was very much present
during the renovation of Baltimore’s Washington Monument. The 18-month, $5.5 million project involved painstaking restoration work on the 200-year-old
    column and

culminated in a grand reopening celebration on the Fourth of July. But the journey to that point was equally momentous. In October 2014, workers discovered
a time capsule dating to 1915. Then, in February of this year, crews found a second capsule that had been laid in the monument’s cornerstone in 1815.
    Naturally,

the public was fascinated. And while the contents of the capsules proved prosaic–coins, newspaper clippings, likenesses of historical figures such as
Francis Scott Key and, naturally, George Washington–the discoveries provided a link to our collective past and prompted reflection on what we can leave
    for future generations.

    Even before the news broke
late last year, it was the worst-kept secret in Baltimore: Forty-eight-year-old Molly Shattuck, the ex-wife of former Constellation Energy CEO Mayo
Shattuck, had performed oral sex on a 15-year-old boy, a schoolmate of her son’s at an exclusive private school in Baltimore County. The ugly truth was
confirmed in June when she pleaded guilty to fourth-degree rape. Then in August, a judge sentenced the former Ravens cheerleader to 15 years in prison,
with all but two years suspended. She was ordered to spend 48 alternating weekends in a detention facility in Delaware, the state in which the rape
occurred. Many saw the sentence as a mere slap on her tiny wrist, but by September, Shattuck was dividing her days between a no-frills cell in jail and her
well-heeled home in Baltimore. “I take full responsibility for what I did,” Shattuck sobbed in court. “I was the adult.”

    Millennial Media,
one of Baltimore’s better-known homegrown tech startups, got swallowed up by AOL in September in a $238 million deal that could turn around the mobile

better able to compete with other big media companies, such as Google and Facebook, on mobile platforms. Notably, the $238 million was about one-eighth of

    In what was arguably
one of the best years for the LGBTQ community, Baltimore suffered a loss when the news broke in May that Club Hippo would close. After more than four

doors for good. Opened in 1972, the Hippo served as a safe haven for all walks of life through times of adversity, including the AIDS epidemic. It was a
comfort zone, where people could be themselves without fear or judgment. And sometimes that meant howling “What’s Up?” by 4 Non Blondes with a bunch of
your closest friends in its beloved karaoke room, or catching the latest drag show on the dance floor. Of course, the Hippo couldn’t go out without one
last big party, which it held on September 26 as a packed dance floor boogied to one last song (“It’s Raining Men” by The Weather Girls, of course). After

However top political communications consultant Ruth Sherman believes that, while Carson’s debate performance improved at the third GOP debate, he has a long way to go in that format. As a media coach, she thinks Carson remains too soft spoken.

“He was significantly looser in his presentation [at the CNBC debate]. He was more prepared and his presentation was more engaging, though his physical and vocal affect are still too quiet,” she says. “His voice is especially monotonous, which causes a mismatch. He is unable to show excitement or display passion. His facial expression is flat, though he didn’t close his eyes as much, which is a bad habit.”

Karen Bradley, the director of graduate studies in dance at the University of Maryland and a movement analysis expert, says that one of Carson’s strengths is that he speaks in clear, short phrases and can be animated with his eyes—“they can twinkle”—and hands. Carson, however, she says doesn’t generally give the impression that he fully “stands behind” what he says with strong “core” positioning, in the manner other, more practiced candidates do.

In that way, Carson shares a certain characteristic with Trump that may be helping voters identify with each political newcomer. Notably, neither of the two GOP leaders comes across as overly rehearsed in their speech. “We call this ‘flow’ and it’s fun to watch,” Bradley says. “They say what they think and move from topic to topic.”

Essentially, in terms of communication, it is this lack of self-censoring that is appealing about outsider candidates. Of course, it’s the same quality that makes both Carson and Trump prone to controversial statements.

“Carson appeals to the nonpolitical type, he’s someone who is viewed an uncorrupted by the political system,” says Shawn Parry-Giles, director of the University of Maryland’s Center for Political Communication and Leadership. “He says: ‘I’m not a debater, I’m just a person trying to do the right thing’ and that is really appealing right now.’”

On the other side of the aisle, Martin O’Malley’s communication skills, which can vary widely and send mixed messages, can be harder to parse. “I’ve seen him as ‘Mr. Nice Guy’ and ‘Mr. Nasty,’” Vatz said.

None of the experts we spoke with believe that the former Baltimore mayor and former two-term governor with a liberal record of accomplishment in Annapolis doesn’t mean what he says. He just doesn’t communicate “authenticity”—the signature quality primary campaigns are about when party activists are looking for candidates they can back with enthusiasm.

“He comes off as ‘too smooth,’” said Parry-Giles. “He wants to be the ‘cool guy,’ the Obama-figure—the young, energetic guy—but he hasn’t taken off and it’s too late now.”

O’Malley, in many ways, has been stuck in the outside lane, unable to get in-between Sanders, the self-declared socialist, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the establishment candidate.

It’s somewhat ironic, Parry-Giles said, that Bernie Sanders is one the seen as against the establishment. “He’s unkempt and unpolished, but he’s a lifelong politician, too.”

But while Sanders’ Brooklyn accent, at times, uncombed hair and emphatic gesturing communicate ‘genuineness,’ O’Malley often misses the authenticity target because his anger can feel rehearsed and his smiles ill-timed or forced.

“Psychoanalysts—and I’m not one—call this ‘misplaced affectation,’” Vatz said, referring to O’Malley’s occasional mismatched expression and context.

On the other hand, Bradley says, O’Malley on the stump or at the podium, speaks with a “tremendous” amount of core support, which communicates that’s he engaged and “stands behind” what he says. O’Malley is able to turn his body and look directly at other candidates on stage. He’s also able to look into the camera and use his smile, effectively, at times. O’Malley’s main problem, as Bradley sees it, is that he speaks in very long phrases that may be hard for some people to follow.

“He’s not easy to understand in the way that Bill Clinton is,” she said.

Cohen agrees with Bradley and takes it a step further. He says not only does O’Malley—a well known policy wonk—speak in phrases that are too wordy; he also tries to squeeze in each of his talking points when he’s interviewed on television or standing on the stage. The combination inevitably makes his presentation more awkward and stiff than necessary.

“It always looks like he’s trying to get everything he’s written down on his ‘3 by 5’ cards into his allotted time,” Cohen says. “That’s why he struggles to communicate on a deeper level with voters.” In Maryland, the University of Baltimore political observer says, voters have had time to get to know O’Malley, but that’s not true outside the state.

In fact, in some ways, the challenge O’Malley faces is similar to one that Hillary Clinton and Jeb Bush face. All three have strengths based on governing experience and knowledge of policy, but they are not the most gifted nonverbal communicators.

All three want to make the case want that they are the “competent” choice for voters—and, to their credit, put forth their policy plans. Not exactly a recipe for excitement or how we tend market things in the U.S., however.

In the end, it will be interesting to see where Carson and O’Malley land even if neither wins their primary nominations. Some, cynically, already view Carson’s campaign as largely an effort to enhance his brand and book sales. Some also believe that O’Malley’s realistic aim in the short-term is not the Democratic presidential nomination—though he would certainly accept it—but the vice-president slot or a cabinet level position.

“He’s a really smart politician. I consider him one of the smartest politicians around,” Vatz said of O’Malley. “I don’t think he’ll be making unnecessary personal attacks at Sanders or Clinton and take the risk of offending the party.”

This Friday at 8 p.m., MSNBC host Rachel Maddow will moderate a Democratic forum from Winthrop University featuring O’Malley, Clinton, and Sanders.

Can a retired neurosurgeon with no political experience win the Republican presidential nomination?

Over Memorial Day weekend, Ben Carson, the retired Johns Hopkins doctor famed for becoming the first surgeon to successfully separate Siamese twins at the head, dominated the first major poll of Republican primary candidates in the south.

Organized at the Southern Leadership Republican Conference in Oklahoma City and produced by SoonerPoll.com, Carson bested all 17 candidates, taking 25.4 percent of the total vote. Carson not only easily topped Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who finished in second with 20.5 percent of the vote, but also Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who took third with 16.6 percent, and establishment favorite Jeb Bush, who came in sixth with 4.9 percent of the tally.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie came in fourth place with 5.3 percent of the vote while Texas Gov. Rick Perry finished fifth with 5 percent of the tally.

Carly Fiorina, the former Hewlett-Packard CEO who earned a master’s degree from the University of Maryland Robert H. Smith School of Business, finished in 10th place.

Whether Carson’s momentum can be sustained through the debate season remains to be seen, of course. Carson has shot himself in the foot several times with public remarks, comparing Obamacare to slavery and comparing homosexuality to pedophilia and bestiality, for example. In 2013, he canceled his scheduled commencement address at Hopkins after his remarks about same-sex marriage sparked an outcry on campus. But there’s no doubting his popularity in conservative Christian and Tea Party circles—two groups that turn out in Republican primaries. Not only could Carson do well in the first Republican primary in Iowa, he could also potentially benefit if an early “SEC primary”—the name taken from the Southeastern Conference college football league—takes shape with states such as Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee coming together to hold primaries on the same day in early March.

Carson’s quick rise to prominence in the Republican Party began after a 2013 National Prayer Breakfast speech—a setting that’s usually nonpolitical—when he sharply criticized President Obama’s heath care law and tax polices. He opened up his home and talked to Baltimore magazine about his life story in 2009.

The other significant politico with strong Baltimore ties—former mayor and former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley—is expected to announce his Democratic presidential bid Saturday in Federal Hill Park.

Only time will tell whether Carson or O’Malley, who faces especially long odds against Democratic favorite Hillary Clinton, will be able to win or even significantly impact their respective primary races. But having them in the field should at least help keep things interesting for Maryland voters for the foreseeable (and long and often tedious) 2016 campaign.

Ben Carson, the famed Johns Hopkins doctor who became the first surgeon to successfully separate Siamese twins at the head, formally announced his bid as a Republican presidential candidate Monday. Before today, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz were the only formally announced candidates in the Republican field.

Carson’s entry into the presidential sweepstakes by no means came as a surprise: Last month, the 63-year-old retired neurosurgeon said he would be making a major statement May 4 in his hometown of Detroit about his decision to enter the 2016 Republican field.

Carson, who has never held elected office, first rose to national attention in 1987 following the groundbreaking surgery on the conjoined twins. At the time, he was already the youngest chief of pediatric neurosurgery ever at Hopkins and his personal story, overcoming a childhood of urban poverty, was later turned into a best-selling autobiography, Gifted Hands, and movie.

Others, including former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, and South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham are expected to join the suddenly burgeoning—former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina also announced a bid today—group of Republican contenders.

Coincidentally, Fiorina also has local ties: She earned a master’s degree from the University of Maryland Robert H. Smith School of Business.

Carson’s quick rise to prominence in conservative political circles began after a 2013 National Prayer Breakfast speech—a setting that’s usually nonpolitical—when he sharply criticized President Obama’s heath care law and tax polices.

But Carson has also shot himself in the foot several times in public remarks, comparing Obamacare to slavery and comparing homosexuality to pedophilia and bestiality, for example. In 2013, he canceled his scheduled commencement address at Hopkins after his remarks about same-sex marriage sparked an outcry on campus.

He remains, however, popular in conservative and Tea Party circles, often polling ahead of elected officials in the field where he’s seen as both an inspirational leader and advocate for conservative Christian values. He opened up his home and talked to Baltimore magazine about his life story in 2009.

Of course, we still expect another Marylander, former Baltimore mayor and former Gov. Martin O’Malley, to throw his hat into the ring on the Democratic side. The field there remains, well, almost nonexistent at this point, other than former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Given the past two weeks in Baltimore, bringing Carson and O’Malley together for a discussion addressing inner-city problems might not actually be a bad way to start the presidential debate season.

It’s been a hectic 24 hours.

Monday morning, Sen. Barbara Mikulski surprised the political world by announcing that she would not seek reelection in 2016, immediately setting off a day of wild speculation about potential contenders to fill her shoes.

Then, this morning, the presumed Democratic frontrunner for her seat, former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, issued a statement praising Mikulski’s record, but declaring that he would not be a candidate for her office. He has been, after all, making the rounds in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina—early presidential primary states—where, it is presumed, he will eventually throw his hat in the ring.

Which brings us to renowned former Johns Hopkins’ neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson. The 63-year-old conservative Republican launched a formal presidential exploratory committee Tuesday—a key move that allows him to start raising money now for a campaign should he decide to enter the race. He made the announcement via video on his new website, which highlights his compelling personal story, groundbreaking career in pediatric neurosurgery, and philanthropy.

In his nearly 4-minute video announcement, Carson, who has never held elected office, says, “All of us are frustrated with the way Washington has let us down. Career politicians simply don’t understand the disappointment, anger, and pain in real America.”

He says that if he receives enough encouragement and support over the next few months, he’ll make for a run for president.

Although Carson has at times created controversy with his public remarks, such as expressing his opposition to same-sex marriage and Obamacare, as well as his creationist views, he remains popular among conservatives. At the recent, annual Conservative Political Action Conference in National Harbor, MD, Carson finished fourth in the straw poll with 11.4 percent of the vote, after Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul with 25.7 percent, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker with 21.4 percent, and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz with 11.5 percent.

It’s worth noting that Carson outpolled former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who finished with 8.3 percent of the tally, as well as Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, and Texas Gov. Rick Perry—all of whom received less than 4 percent of the vote. Carson, who has often appeared on Fox News as a political commentator, discussed his potential bid on Meet the Press this past weekend. At this point, there seems little to indicate why he wouldn’t run.

In fact, Carson, who talks often about his religious faith, may play particularly well in the Iowa Republican caucus and South Carolina primary if former Gov. Mike Huckabee does not enter the race.

O’Malley, on the other hand, has struggled to make much of dent in national Democratic presidential polls, and recently tried to distance himself from Hillary Clinton.

Time will tell if Carson or O’Malley will be able to gain traction in their potential primary campaign efforts, but what does seem clear is that neither man lacks ambition for the job.

Baltimore-born and raised Sen. Barbara Mikulski announced at a Fells Point press conference Monday morning that she will not seek re-election in 2016.

Elected to the House of Representatives in 1976, the Highlandtown-native and Democrat won Maryland’s 1986 Senate race, and is the longest-serving woman in Congressional history.

The 78-year-old former social worker turned activist turned politician has been a vocal advocate for Maryland and liberal causes in the Senate from the start. She also became the
first woman to chair the powerful Appropriations Committee, a committee where she’s served since entering the Senate.

At her press conference, Mikulski highlighted the symbolism of making her announcement in Fells Point in Southeast Baltimore, where she became politically engaged in the ultimately successful 1970s fight to prevent a six-lane elevated highway through the historic port neighborhood. “It’s where I learned that we are all in this together . . . And it’s where I learned about service from my mother and father who said, ‘Good morning, can I help you?’ every morning when they opened the small neighborhood grocery they owned and ran.”

In making her decision, Mikulski, who got emotional briefly in talking about her staff and close working relationship with Maryland Sen. Ben Cardin, said she had thought “long and hard” about how best to spend the next two years. “I had to decide whether to spend my time fighting to keep my job or fighting for your job,” said Mikulski, who appears, despite the passing years, as energetic and spirited as ever. “Do I spend my time raising money or raising hell to meet your day-to-day needs?”

Over the next two years in the Senate, Mikulski said, she’d “be fighting to give families a raise by finishing what we started with the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and passing the Paycheck Fairness Act, once and for all guaranteeing equal pay for equal work. I’ll be fighting for a family-friendly tax code with targeted tax breaks, doubling the child care tax credit to make child care affordable.” Mikulski added that she has not yet given serious consideration to what she might do after leaving the Senate—other than perhaps spending more time lingering over morning coffee at the Daily Grind in Fells Point.

Cardin, who was on hand for the announcement, called Mikulski’s decision a “bittersweet” moment.

“Her record is incredible and we celebrate that today,” said Cardin, who has known Mikulski since the early 1970s when she served on the Baltimore City Council and he was a member Maryland House of Delegates. “She’s a fighter who broke many glass ceilings.”

Cardin said, like many, he was surprised by Mikulski’s decision, which she told him about yesterday. He added that Mikulski certainly would’ve been favored to win reelection if she’d chosen to run again.

Immediately following the announcement of the
Mikulski press conference this morning, speculation began about who would run to take her place in 2016.

The name mentioned most often is former Gov. Martin O’Malley, who has been seriously considering a
presidential bid for sometime. O’Malley, whose mother has long worked in Mikulski’s D.C. office, is considered a long shot for the Democratic nomination with Hillary Clinton’s projected campaign.

After her opening statement, Mikulski addressed a question about the potential 2016 field for the state’s open seat, noting with a smile that, “Maryland has a lot of talent and they’ll be telling you about it in the next 10 minutes.”

Other members of the Maryland congressional delegation, including
Rep. Elijah Cummings and Rep. Chris Van Hollen, are being discussed as potential candidates to fill Mikulski’s shoes. According to The Washington Post, Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger’s staff has said “it’s safe to say” that he’ll consider running for Mikulski’s seat.

On the Republican side, renowned former Johns Hopkins’ neurosurgeon Ben Carson has been floating a potential presidential bid and could consider
setting his sights on the Senate. Former Gov. Robert Ehrlich, who previously served in the U.S. House of Representatives, may also consider a bid for Mikulski’s seat.

Lacena “Candy” Carson wanders around the basement family room of her Georgian-style, Baltimore County estate—hammer in hand—performing an extremely familiar task: She’s tacking up plaques and prizes belonging to her husband, Dr. Ben Carson, the internationally-renowned pediatric neurosurgeon.

On this brisk fall night, Candy has fallen a bit behind in her efforts, as she hangs Carson’s 2007 honorary doctorate degree from Columbia University and his plaque from Baltimore magazine’s Top Doctors 2007, alongside the other honors that fill the walls, glass cases, and specially built niches throughout the residence.

The family room, where Carson likes to unwind over games of pool, ping pong, and foosball, is a sort of makeshift museum of the man known for his gifted hands, and Candy is both keeper and curator. A quick glance at the cases and walls reveals more than 50 honorary doctorate degrees from such institutions as Spelman College, Morgan State University, and Yale as well as certificates, trophies, and statues from numerous preeminent organizations.

“It took me about 12 hours to put all these up,” Candy says with a sweep of her arms around the room. “I had to lay them on the floor first to get the proportions just right. I wanted it to be art—not just a bunch of plaques on the walls—and I still have so many to put up that are still in storage.”

That’s two down for tonight with dozens more to go, because as soon as Candy hangs one award up, Carson has another bestowed upon him, including the nation’s highest civilian award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which he won last year.

“You wonder why this house is so large,” jokes Carson’s mother, Sonya, whom Carson credits with his success and who lives in a third-floor suite of the 48-acre, eight-bedroom, 12-bathroom family home.

If these walls could talk, they would share the oft-told story of Carson’s hardscrabble beginnings in Detroit. The story goes that Sonya, who worked three jobs to support Ben and his brother Curtis, pushed her boys to great academic heights despite her own lack of education (Sonya’s formal schooling ended after third grade) and struggled to survive as a single mother. Carson was initially a poor student, but with his mother’s encouragement and insistence on education, he went on to graduate from Yale University and the University of Michigan Medical School before, at 33, becoming the youngest-ever director of pediatric neurosurgery at The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. He gained worldwide recognition in 1987 as the principal surgeon in the landmark 22-hour separation of the Binder Siamese twins. (The surgery was the first time twins joined at the back of the head had been separated with both surviving.)

“Tell them that God is my publicist!”

While many doctors in the Baltimore area have earned international acclaim, not many have a fan base so strong that they can’t go out in public without being stopped for an autograph.

“It’s funny,” says Carson. “Years ago, somebody told me that someone at one of our competitor institutions was asking, ‘Who is Carson’s publicist? How does he get so much press?’ I said, ‘Tell them that God is my publicist!'” Carson chuckles at the memory. “I never sought any attention of any type,” he says. “But it has continued to come, and it’s clear that it’s never going to go away, so I make the most of it.”

One example of making the most of it: Carson gave television network TNT the green light to make a movie about his life: Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story, based on the bestselling book of the same name, will air on February 7, in conjunction with Black History Month. Oscar-winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr. plays Carson. For more than a decade, various production companies have attempted to woo Carson into making a movie of his life, but the timing and artistic intentions never felt right to him—until now.

“I certainly didn’t want to do the movie too early,” says the 57-year-old. “I still had years to practice. Once you are the subject of a movie, it has a tendency to have an impact on your life and how people perceive you. I said to myself, ‘I’d rather do it as I’m approaching the end of my surgical career as opposed to 10 years ago.'”

And make no mistake, strictly entertaining viewers with his life story was not Carson’s goal.

“He didn’t agree to do this for the sake of entertainment,” says Gifted Hands executive producer Dan Angel. “The mission is that it will reach people from all walks of life across the country. He wants people to see his story not because of ego. He wants people to believe you can overcome anything with faith, with family, with a dream.”

Indeed, Carson’s story so inspired Cuba Gooding Jr. that the actor calls meeting the doctor for the first time “magical.” “My experiences [making the film] have changed me as a man and father,” he says. “And they will only continue to shape me.”

While the soft-spoken Carson is humble, he is also surprisingly happy to put his home on display as an obvious marker of his success.

“I don’t shy away from the fact that financially we’ve done well, and it’s not just from medicine,” he says. In addition to taking on close to 400 medical cases a year, Carson sits on the board of several for-profit corporations including The Kellogg Company and Costco Wholesale Corporation, and gives motivational speeches across the country. “I get lots of money to go around and make speeches,” says Carson. “And I’ve got real estate in different places. One of the points I like to make with young people is that you can do that without being an athlete or an entertainer.”

Carson feels the media reinforces the image of sports and entertainment as the only roads to riches for African-Americans. “Look at The Cosby Show,” he says. “You have a physician married to a lawyer, and they live in this okay place, but I never appreciated that the show that came on right after Cosby was Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, in which these rappers get into their limos after they get out of their mansions and onto their private jets. You juxtapose that to what a doctor and lawyer are making, and it sends out the message that you can go out and get all this education but you’re not going to go anywhere with it.”

For the purposes of depicting his own odyssey—from humble roots in a cramped house in Detroit’s Deacon Street (“that was our dream house and it was not even as big as my garage is now”) to his current home, Carson felt it was important to show what money can buy when you achieve academic success.

“It’s not the home, it’s the people that make it a great place.”

“I don’t necessarily want kids to do something for money,” he explains, “but I want them to understand that when you develop yourself intellectually, you become valuable to society in many ways. You don’t have to take a vow of poverty.”

When the Carsons moved to their house in 2001 (from Howard County), they were actually only intending to buy a large plot of land.

“There’s no question I loved the idea of space,” says Carson. “Having grown up in places that were not very spacious with lots of people around, I liked the idea of having your own space, and the idea of being so secluded really appealed to us.”

But as they drove around the neighborhood, they found more than just a plot, they found a home. “I said, ‘Wow! This place has potential,'” Carson recalls. “‘We could do some things with this—we can add a portico, a circular driveway, and landscaping.'”

Carson was inspired, and so was Candy, who got busy on the interior as soon as they moved in. She knocked down walls on the first floor to create a more open floor plan and added a state-of-the-art kitchen where family and close friends (including Maryland State Schools Superintendent Nancy Grasmick and husband, lumber magnate Lou, and Baltimore publisher, Steve Geppi and wife Mindy) gather for her famous vegetarian meals and after-church Sunday brunches.

While their home oozes European style and sophistication—with a hand-carved antique dining room buffet, Chippendale-style dining room chairs, crystal chandeliers, and high quality oil paintings—Candy, an inveterate bargain hunter, says she purchased much of the furniture at the Laurel Auction.

“Did I ever imagine I would live in a place like this?” she asks. “Of course not. Growing up poor, you try to be a good steward of the money you have.”

Since both Candy and Ben were raised poor, they have been careful to keep their three sons (Murray, 25, Ben Jr., 23, and Rhoeyce, 22) grounded. The boys grew up mowing the lawn, helping around the house, playing musical instruments, and watching the example of their parents, who give away and raise large sums of money for the Carson Scholars Fund. (To date, the Carson Scholars Fund has provided more than 3,400 scholarships to high-achieving students.)

“The one thing I’ve noticed over the years is that the children of a lot of people we know who are quite affluent have not done well,” says Carson. “Being determined that our children would not grow up that way and that they would understand the value of hard work and the value of money, we’ve been very careful not to spoil them. Growing up in hardship was a tremendous advantage to me. It puts fire in your belly and gives you the will to keep going when people tell you you should quit.”

Their strong faith is also a guiding force. “We are very spiritual people so you will see a lot of Bibles around the house and things that are indicative of that,” says Carson, who attends a Seventh Day Adventist Church in Silver Spring. “I don’t have to be politically correct here.” He points to a stained-glass window in his foyer, a painting of him with Jesus, and his favorite proverb over the fireplace—”By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches and honor and life”—Proverbs 22:4.

Carson also loves being a Baltimorean, although it took some time. “I came here in 1972 to look at Hopkins Medical School before renovations began, and I said, ‘Do people actually live here?'” he recalls. “I couldn’t believe how bad it was. Four years later, when I came back for residency, they had done a lot of work and have been going gangbusters ever since. I think Baltimore is one of the great success stories in our nation when it comes to urban renewal. Now, I love it here, and this would be my preferred place to live.”

Still, it’s the people, not the place, that matter to him most. “I have the most supportive and wonderful wife anyone could ask for,” says Carson. “I don’t get attached to things. If tomorrow I lose everything, and I’m back in a house like I grew up in, it won’t be the end of the world. It’s not the home, it’s the people that make it a great place.”
