It’s Malacka in Charles Village is a one-stop-shop for fun, flirty, and bold fashion pieces that are sure to make a statement. Malacka Reed started her career as a makeup artist and has become motivational speaker, author, and style icon. We caught up with the Baltimore native in an exclusive interview to peak into her life as a boutique owner and a source of inspiration for her 200,000+ Instagram followers. Learn about her sense of style, her favorite trends, and how she inspires in-store and online customers.

How would you describe the style of your store?
My store is a boutique so it’s not what I would call one-of-a-kind pieces, but very different pieces. I like to cater to women of all sizes and all ethnicities. Even women of the Muslim faith shop with us for our oversized dress collection, which is super dope. We’re a boutique that’s really into fun, effortless fashion.

What are your favorite fashion and makeup trends currently?
I love the oversized collection we carry and that women are feeling comfortable wearing oversized dresses, sundresses, and don’t always need to have on something that’s body-con to feel sexy. I also love that people are being a bit more free with their style of dress now. People are really dressing for themselves and not just following a trend.

We’re kind of moving away from wearing eyeshadow. We’re into the fresh dewy or matte face. I love that the eyebrows are coming down again, we’re moving back into the natural brow.

What was your inspiration for opening up your own store?
I really needed to do it! I started as a makeup artist, then I came out with my own cosmetic line and I moved into the fashion industry. In the middle of all of that, I became an author and a motivational speaker. So it was important that I opened up my own space to be with my customers and make sure I inspire and uplift them from the inside out.

What do you love about having a store in Baltimore?
Baltimore has truly made me who am. I feel like if you can make it in Baltimore, you can make it anywhere. I love that we’re raising the frequency here in our city, more positive women are opening businesses, and we’re also giving back to our community.

What kinds of trends or styles can we find in your store?
A little bit of everything. You’re gonna find bodysuits, rompers, sequins, feathers, pearls, ballroom skirts, high-waist pants, or even low-rise.

How has social media played a role in expanding your business?
I love my followers to the moon and back. Social media plays a big role because you get to put your clothes on and show how people can look in them! If it wasn’t for social media, I could honestly say that my business would not be what it is.

Tell me about the makeup section of your store.
Skai Ryan cosmetics is the name of my makeup line and has been around for about 10 years now. Right now, we are re-launching our makeup because we kind of moved away from it when we opened the store. It was important to raise the fashion baby and let people take us seriously there.

How do you like to start your day before coming to the studio?
Well, I have a 10-year-old daughter, so I make sure she’s ready then I go into a meditation. The most important thing is prayer and meditation. When I pray, I’m talking to God and when I meditate, I’m listening to God.

What is your go-to outfit and makeup look for everyday wear?
Leggings! For me, when I get to work, I have to put on the clothes and model them! I’ve found it crazy for me to get all dolled up, come into work, and then I’ve got to get undressed.

On another level, a cute off-the-shoulder blouse, oversized dress, or high-waist jeans and a bodysuit.

Our Top Picks:

When it was time for Raina Filippelli to name her new, trendy women’s contemporary boutique in Quarry Lake, the decision came easily. “I’ve always wanted to see my name in big, bright lights,” she cracks with a nod to the large pink neon sign that hangs above her store’s cash register.

Filippelli is no newcomer to the fashion scene, having held positions as a photo editor (for magazines such as Glamour and CosmoGirl), a luxury event planner, and a wedding blogger before moving from New York City to Baltimore six years ago for her husband’s business.

“I felt like I could take my experience and do something special here in Baltimore,” Filippelli says. “It just came down to timing, and I had a gut feeling that Quarry Lake was the right place to open a store when I saw all of the great restaurants and stores opening here.”

Raina Dawn, which opened its doors in October, specializes in fashion-forward pieces that are wearable and versatile, as well as shoes, accessories, and gifts. (Look for brands such as John + Jenn, Greylin, For Love & Lemons, and Generation Love.) The store’s bright white walls, gold accents, ornate chandeliers, and pale pink pops of color will make you feel like you are shopping at your favorite SoHo boutique.

“My strength is definitely in the little details,” says Filippelli. “Everyone is busy with life, and to have a place where you are able to come in and have people help you choose things and style you from head to toe, there is a lot of value in that. I want shopping here to be an experience.”

The latest addition to Hampden’s burgeoning retail row has arrived. Opened in August by Brittany Parry, White Fox Boutique is stocked with women’s contemporary apparel and accessories and is ideal for all of the fashion magazine hoarders and trend obsessed. Located on The Avenue—in the same block as The Food Market and Doubledutch Boutique—the store is flooded with cute jumpsuits, denim, and dresses for any occasion. We talked to Parry about the inspiration behind the store, her favorite spots in the city, and her style icons.

What was the inspiration behind starting your own store?
Ever since I could remember I wanted to open my own boutique. I’ve always searched for spaces throughout the years, but nothing really felt right. I’ve lived in the Hampden neighborhood for almost five years now and once I saw this space, it just felt right. The size, location, everything—it all fell into place.

How did you come up with the name White Fox?
White Fox is named after my dog. She is a Pomeranian mix. I’m pretty sure she has some American Eskimo in her too, but everyone would say, “Oh, she looks like a little white fox.” I’ve had her for about 10 years but sadly, I had to put her down a month before the store opened. She lives on through the store. She used to travel with me everywhere. For the grand opening I partnered with BARCS, and gave some of the proceeds towards their charity. I hope to do that throughout the years. It’s all about giving back.

How would you describe White Fox in one sentence?
It’s like shopping in your best friend’s closet—no matter what your style is, you’ll be able to find something.

How would you describe your target customer?
The women who shop in my store are not afraid to wear certain things, know what’s trending, and aren’t afraid to mix and match styles.

What is your favorite item or line in the store?
I really like the brand Sage the Label. I feel like they do a really good job of mixing day and night. They kind of have more of a bohemian feel, but they also have things you could totally go out in. I also love our jean line “Just Black Denim.” They have the most amazing fit.

Where is your favorite hangout spot in the city?
Hampden! The Food Market is great, Frazier’s On the Avenue, and Zissimos, which is next door to us is amazing! It’s all local people and they’re down to earth, you can just go in there and watch the Ravens game and chill.

The best thing about Hampden?

The people. I know I’m the new kid on the block, but so many people have stopped by, introduced themselves, helped me when I needed things from sweeping the front to helping hang things. Everyone has been very neighborly, which is amazing. In a neighborhood like this, where there are a lot of small businesses, I feel like they could have been very catty and stand offish towards me, but I can tell they really want me to succeed in the neighborhood.

I really love Shay Mitchell. Mary-Kate and Ashley, of course, because they’re so cool, and Twiggy back in the day.

What is your favorite fashion trend right now? What is your least?

My favorite fashion trend right now is probably bell sleeves and my least favorite is tassel earrings. I know everyone loves them and we’ve had a few smaller ones in the store, but it’s just something I can’t get behind.

No outfit is complete without . . . ?
A good handbag.

How does White Fox differ from other stores?
It is a place that is on top of the trends, and encouraging people to try them. I want to have pieces that are unique to the store. People are more conscious about what they are spending their money on, and if something is a little different, I feel like they’ll be willing to spend a little extra to get something for themselves.

It is hard to deny the energy you feel when stepping into Angel Park for the first time. Right in the heart of Fells Point, this menswear shop is the perfect place for the stylish, well-put together guy.

The store is all about bringing the community together and giving exposure to other Baltimore-based companies, with most of the pieces in the store created or designed locally. Customers are even given a shot of whiskey at checkout to welcome them into the Angel Park family. We met up with owner Justin James to discus the ins and outs of owning a menswear boutique.

What’s it like being one of the few stores in Baltimore that solely sells men’s wear?
JJ: I like it. With the experience that we have, I’m able to go out and find unique pieces to bring to Baltimore that are more unique than what you see in a typical store.

How would you describe your store?
JJ: Fun, creative, full of energy, and very personable.

How did you get the name for your store?
JJ: I was coming home from a trip from Los Angeles, the City of Angels. I wanted to bring all of the inspiration I felt from that trip to the shop. I like having the California vibe brought to the store.

Who is your style inspiration?
JJ: I don’t really have a person as inspiration. My inspiration is that with fashion, you can use clothing as an extension of your character. It’s another way to express who you are and your mood that day.

Current favorite trend?
JJ: I’m really big on accessories for men. I like adding little bells and whistles to make an outfit not so typical.

What’s your guilty pleasure?
JJ: Netflix for sure.

No outfit is complete without . . . ?
JJ: A splash of color and your own personality.

As you drive down South Charles Street in Federal Hill, it’s not hard to miss the black-and-white-striped awning that hangs above Punch, a boutique owned by Cydney Vigliotti. Although the shop has only been open for about seven months, its big personality has already caught the attention of Baltimore boutique lovers. We met up with Cydney to talk shop, favorites, and trends.

How would you describe your boutique in one sentence?
Cydney Vigliotti: Affordable, young, contemporary fashion.

Who is your style inspiration?
CV: I love Tory Burch because she’s very simple and that’s kind of how we’ve modeled the store too, where it’s simple but pretty and easy to shop.

What is your favorite item currently in the store?
CV: Always our champagne bears. We have champagne gummy bears that are infused with Dom Perignon bubbles. They’re amazing.

What is the most embarrassing fashion trend you used to love?
CV: Cargo pants, like big cargo pants with tank tops.

What is your guilty pleasure?
CV: Reality TV. I love Bravo.

How did you get the name for the boutique?
CV: I used to live in Austin, TX, and there is all kinds of really cool, funky boutiques so I really wanted to have a cool name that would stand out and be very brand-able, so as we continue to expand we’d have something that would have an impact name, so to speak.

What is your favorite saying/motto?
CV: Buy the shoes!

No outfit is complete without…?
CV: Jewelry

What is your current favorite trend? Least favorite trend?
CV: My favorite trend that is getting bigger and bigger is the high-waisted pants, skirts, and things like that with crop tops. My least favorite, which is actually kind of interesting, is the crop tops that are really really short. The first trend is really wearable for a bunch of different body types. You don’t have to be super skinny to be able to wear the crop tops with high-waisted bottoms and it’s really flattering. But then the opposite is the really short crop tops, which nobody can wear.

Our Top Three Picks:
