After nearly 10 years of business and relocating from Fells Point to Green Spring Station, one of our favorite go-to dress
boutiques,
Cupcake, has decided to close its doors. Although we are very sad to
see them go, it looks like there are two exciting projects in owner Lisa
Schatz’s future. The first is the opening of a brand new and improved online
store. The other we are eagerly awaiting details on. In the mean time be sure
to check out Cupcake’s fabulous retirement sale and grab up those last goodies
while you can. We will truly miss Cupcake and we send them our best wishes for whatever
the future holds.

Bmore’s Creative Natives Popup
Shop, dance, and drink the night away, as Strangers with Style and SewLab USA partner up to host Bmore’s Creative Natives Popup this Friday, July 31 at the Windup Space. There will be a variety of cool products from local vendors For Rent Shoes, Doubledutch Boutique, Sixteen Tons, 3Clothing, SewLab USA and many more. The shopping will begin at 7 p.m. and will be accompanied by performances starting at 9:30 p.m. from artists including Eze Jackson and Bond St. District. Admission is free until 9 p.m., after which it’s $5. 12 W. North Ave.

BUFF Nail Bar

Ladies, get ready to indulge. Soon you will
be able to go out with your favorite girlfriends and enjoy a pampered
day of manicures, cocktails, and wine in historic Ellicott City. Since the
opening of
Scrub Nail Boutique in Fells Point, owner Jasmine Simms has
started a
GoFundMe account with the plans of opening a sister nail bar
named BUFF Nail Bar. After all, every women deserves to experience the luxury of a fume free
nail bar’s tranquil atmosphere and product ingredients. The new
boutique will hopefully open on Main Street before the end of August just in time for
bridal season.

Drop-in Art Activities: Fashion
As part of their on-going Drop-in Art Activities program, the Walters Art Museum will offer fashion-themed projects during the month of August. Every Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. feel free to drop by, no registration needed, to participate in projects like designing your own fabric, creating a hat, and constructing the latest trends in jewelry. With the holidays fast approaching, your calendar is likely filling up with invitations, all containing those coded party terms: “cocktail,” “semi-formal,” and “dressy casual.”

But what does it all mean? We asked some experts.

If it’s a formal charity gala, notes Lisa Schatz, owner of Fells Point’s Cupcake Boutique, “long dresses can be in order.” However, Karen Ciurca-Weiner, manager of Cross Keys’ Jones and Jones, says short dresses are also acceptable, “if dressy enough.” She suggests “beads, sequins, shimmer fabrics, and lace, chiffon, or mesh overlays.”

If the event is “semi-formal”, our experts advise against long dresses. Instead, try “a cocktail dress, perhaps without beading, but still in a dressy fabric, such as lace, satin, or silk,” Ciurca-Weiner says.

And what about the dreaded “dressy casual?” “For a casual house party, or event at a bar, you can do a simple knit or sweater dress, or pair a beaded or silk top with a nice pair of dark jeans and a heel,” Schatz says.

For a different look, Schatz suggests something non-traditional. “One of my favorites for holiday this year is a jumpsuit. It’s a fashionable update, and they tend to be very flattering,” she explains.

For the finishing touches, Jodi Brodie, co-owner of Owings Mills’ Treasure House Accessories, advises revelers stick to “one or two pieces of good-looking jewelry, focusing on the individual pieces, and not on the amount of pieces.”

Also, don’t forget a dressier bag or clutch. “Anything that has a little bit of sparkle, or a little bit of life to it,” she says.

For city dwellers nervous about the move—don’t fret! Owner Lisa Schatz assures her loyal following that Green Spring Station is super close (plus there’s free parking!). “Our downtown customers will enjoy a visit to Green Spring Station. It’s a short hop up 83, parking is plentiful and free, and there are so many other cute places to shop, and great places to eat,” she says.

The locally-owned store will feel right at home joining other small businesses such as Becket Hitch, Wee Chic, and Trillium. “Green Spring Station has a focus on unique, local merchants that give our customers a distinctive shopping experience,” said Tom Peddy of Foxleigh Enterprises, owner of Green Spring Station. “We are certainly a shopping destination and think the expanded choices Cupcake provides will be very well received by our customers.”
