Locations, times, and prices vary.

Don’t (completely) panic: There’s still time to make last-minute Valentine’s Day dinner reservations. Whether you’re looking for a romantic table for two or late-night dessert spot, we’ve got you covered. Read through our guide to local menus for every V-Day agenda—first dates, dinner and a game, and casual spots, to name a few—before calling around to find open tables.

Feb. 14-16: Belgian Beer Fest

Max’s Taphouse, 737 S. Broadway. 11-2 a.m. Free.

Nothing says “romantic date idea” quite like sampling hundreds of Belgian beers at Max’s Taphouse. This weekend, the Fells Point staple is stocking its bar with more than 250 varieties of Belgian bottled beers, with another 200 on draft, as well as takeovers each day by the likes of RAR, Stillwater, and Allagash. Swing by the revered taphouse to sip on a few new ales, snack on Belgian-inspired eats, and celebrate this 16th annual beer fest.

Baltimore Art Gallery, 855 W. 36th St. 7-9:30 p.m. Free.

This Friday, take a trip down the Avenue in Hampden to check out the neighborhood’s newest addition—Baltimore Art Gallery. The space will feature work made exclusively by local artists, with a focus on providing affordable, accessible pieces to Baltimore art collectors or casual shoppers. Browse through paintings and prints by area artists like Matt Muirhead and Kristin Wiebe during the gallery’s grand opening on Friday night, and take home your favorite piece and a frame by the night’s end.

Creative Alliance, 3134 Eastern Ave. 7 & 9:30 p.m. $19-22.

Let’s face it: Everyone has (at least) a few cringe-worthy memories about a middle-school crush that you’d rather not relive. But in honor of Valentine’s Day, a group of brave souls will take over the Creative Alliance stage to share their own tales of awkward adolescent romance, with props like love letters and diary entries to back up their stories. Settle into the Highlandtown arts center and spend Saturday night experiencing flashbacks to the storytellers’ teenage heartsick moments, even if only to temporarily forget your own.

Feb. 16: Pinewood Derby

Union Craft Brewing, 1700 W. 41st St. 12-5 p.m. Free-$10.

Sharpen your tools and assemble your pit crew for Union Craft Brewing’s fifth-annual Pinewood Derby. This good ol’ fashioned tradition invites novice builders and expert crafters alike to make a wooden toy car and race it down a 40-foot racetrack. This year, spectators can monitor the finish line via the brewery’s giant projector screen while racers compete to win beer prizes and bragging rights. Stick around after the high-stakes action to knock back a few Duckpins and chow down on Well Crafted Kitchen’s special carnival-themed menu.

This annual oyster palooza checks all the boxes for a standout day of shucking, slurping, and sipping. Let’s go down the list: Bivalves from the bay sourced from regional farms; superior shuckers from The Local Oyster and True Chesapeake Oyster Co.; the fan-favorite oyster-eating contest; live funky sounds by Rufus Roundtree and Da B’more Brass Factory; and tons of beer from host Union Craft Brewing. Need we say more?

Max’s Taphouse, 737 S. Broadway. 11 a.m.-2 a.m. Free.

For almost 35 years, Max’s Taphouse has been a mecca-like destination for local beer lovers, with thousands of bottles in its collection and a draft list so long that it practically nudges you to try something new. This weekend, the Fells Point staple will temporarily add nearly 100 rare and obscure beers to its menu, with more than 60 deep-cut drafts and a growing list of bottles and cans. Take this opportunity to sip on something new because, who knows, “That’s the Kind of IPA That Makes You Wish You Spoke French” or the “Sierra Nevada Bigfoot 2009” could be your new favorite beer.

Nov. 14-Dec. 1: Aladdin

The Hippodrome Theatre at the France-Merrick Performing Arts Center, 12 N. Eutaw St. Times vary. $52-175.50.

On the heels of the live-action version of this classic Disney film, the story of Aladdin will come alive on The Hippodrome stage—minus the presence of Will Smith. Bring the whole family to the historic downtown theater to experience the adventures of a street urchin who falls in love with the princess of Agrabah, with plenty of songs, colorful characters, and romance to keep audience members of all ages entertained. Catch this eye-popping musical during its almost three-week run and get ready to go on a magic carpet ride for the ages.

Ottobar, 2549 N. Howard St. Sat. 8 p.m., Sun. 7 p.m. $15-50.

Whether you were in the crowd at the Talking Heads’ 1983 performance at Hollywood’s Pantages Theater or have watched the concert film “Stop Making Sense” a few times over, we can almost guarantee that you’ve never experienced the legendary show like this before. For two nights at the Ottobar, more than 25 Baltimore musicians and performers—including the likes of Landis Expandis on the drums and Jasmine Pope and Amy Reid as guest vocalists—will perform a full-throttle rendition of the epic concert with a light show and lamp-dancing included. Pack the Remington club for this do-good show, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Baltimore Harm Reduction Coalition.

Get into the (early) holiday spirit this Saturday at Belvedere Square’s family-friendly market, packed with handmade gifts by local artists and makers. In between browsing through wares by vendors such as Scarvelous and Allison Fomich of Tigerlillyshop, grab a sweet treat from Sofi’s Crepes or Chocolate by Jinji, bop along to live music, and spend the afternoon reveling in the start of this chilly holiday season.

May 17: Masarap Pop-up at Suspended Brewing Company

Suspended Brewing Company, 912 Washington Blvd. 5-9 p.m. Free.

If you didn’t get the chance to try local chef Rey Eugenio’s top-notch Filipino eats during his pop-up concept’s stint at Fadensonnen or Greener Fest, head to Pigtown this Friday to sample everything on this entirely plant-based menu. From Masarap staples like charred Brussels sprouts and Filipino-style stir-fry noodles to roasted corn and oyster dumplings, this vegan lineup pairs perfectly with a few of the South Baltimore brewery’s signature pours. And, since one dollar from each pint supports the next Charm City Night Market, there’s no shame in snacking and boozing all night long.

Max’s Taphouse, 737 S. Broadway. 11-2 a.m. Free.

Outdoor beer festivals may be all the rage, but there’s something about walking into Max’s Taphouse and seeing 90 taps (yes, you read that correctly) full of Maryland beer that can’t be beat. This Friday, start early and work your way through beers by more than 40 local breweries, including Charm City favorites like Heavy Seas and Diamondback as well as newcomers like Nepenthe and Mobtown Brewing. Whether you spend the day sampling new brews or sticking to your go-to guarantees, we recommend ordering some nachos or tater tots every few rounds to soak up the suds.

The Baltimore Museum of Art, 10 Art Museum Dr. Wed.-Sun. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Free.

If you do nothing else this spring, visit the Baltimore Museum of Art to experience this awe-inspiring exhibition that celebrates the profound work of MacArthur-award winning local artist Joyce J. Scott and her mother, Elizabeth Talford Scott. The curated collection features Talford Scott’s experimental textile pieces, including a quilt that depicts the North Star as a matriarchal beacon of freedom, along with examples of Scott’s art that responds to her mother’s textile tradition. The exhibition’s seven-month run encourages visitors to view the pair’s thought-provoking bodies of work again and again.

The Charmery Ice Cream Factory, 1700 W. 41st St., Suite 400. 8-11:45 p.m. $10.

We agree with Micah E. Wood: If having your own ice cream flavor at your self-titled album release party isn’t the ultimate flex, we don’t know what is. Pack The Charmery Ice Cream Factory on Friday night to hear this beloved local musician and photographer perform bare-it-all songs from his third record, as well as sets by indie-pop quintet Super City, pop-opera duo Outcalls, rapper Al Rogers Jr., and DJ Loc Spice. Grab a complimentary scoop of the singer-songwriter’s signature flavor (ginger-lemon-coconut) and bop along to brand-new tracks dedicated to introspection, self-care, and—of course—his dog, Ansel.

Pimlico Race Course, 5201 Park Heights Ave. 9 a.m. $99-720.

After months of debates and hearings about the future of the iconic Preakness Stakes, this weekend’s events will be the first time in a while that the focus will be on the actual horse race, not the political one surrounding its potential move to Laurel Park. On Saturday, start the festivities early at the ever-raucous InfieldFest, featuring the likes of EDM star Kygo, popular rapper Logic, and DJ/producer Diplo, before heading to the track for the main event. Above all else, revel in the chance to cheer on the middle jewel of the Triple Crown for what could be one of the final times at Pimlico Race Course.

American Visionary Art Museum, 800 Key Hwy. 7 p.m. Free-$15.

Whoever coined the term “the bigger, the better” clearly never attended a party supplied with a smorgasbord of bite-sized cupcakes, shrimp cocktails, and crab cake sandwiches. At this 14th annual bash-slash-competition, sample itty-bitty versions of your favorite foods (past standouts include mini matzo ball soup and cinnamon rolls). Or, if you’re confident in your shrunken cooking skills, enter your own petite picks to win the grand (and ironic) prize of a giant can of mini corn.

737 South Broadway. 11 a.m.-2 a.m. Free.

According to Lyft, Max’s Taphouse was the most visited bar in Baltimore during 2018—and for good reason. During this annual beer fest, belly up to the bar and sample a selection of rare European pours that will join the pub’s usual 200-plus bottles and taps for the entire weekend. If you have one dubbel or tripel too many, no worries, the Fells Point favorite will be serving up Belgian-inspired snacks to soak up the suds.

If you’re a bit late to the Valentine’s Day party, but still looking for a cultural date to make up for it, you’re in luck. This Friday, School 33 Arts Center will unveil three new exhibitions: The Mother of Invention, a group exhibition of experimental video shorts that combines DIY digital and analog image manipulation, Modern Language, featuring emoji-inspired collages by Baltimore-based artist Amy Helminiak that explore communication in the digital age, and soft obstacle, an installation by local artist Ben Piwowar that combines drawing, painting, and structural strategies to evoke feelings of vulnerability and flux.

The Crown, 1910 N. Charles St. 7-11 p.m. Free.

From their sci-fi comedy “The Terrible Secret of Lunastus” to this year’s Halloween extravaganza “Lurid Happenings: A Night of Mischief and Devilry,” the Baltimore Rock Opera Society always keeps its devoted local fans wanting more. This Saturday, help the beloved performance group chose their next fantastical production by watching two pitch presentations and then casting your vote for your favorite contender. After the ballots have been collected, stick around for a late-night dance party to celebrate another weird and wonderful rock opera in 2021.

Union Craft Brewing, 1700 W. 41st St. 12-5 p.m. Free-$10.

Who said your Cub Scout training would never come in handy? While pinewood derby racing is a few decades past its heyday, Union Craft Brewing is keeping the good ol’ fashioned tradition alive through this annual contest that invites first-timers and seasoned racers alike to make a wooden toy car and run it down their 40-foot derby track. Whether you’re competing for style, speed, or cheering on your favorite car from the sidelines, be sure to grab a specialty slice from Well Crafted Kitchen’s carnival-themed menu and wash it down with a few Duckpins and Skipjacks.

And while the wedding was fake, the mission of the party—to support the local nonprofit network Volunteering Untapped—was very real. At this year’s Black Tie Baltimore Fake Wedding on February 23, the VU leadership team including Jeremy Raichle, Teddy Davidson, Brittany Fowler, and Magiros, will cut out the obligations of attending a wedding—no presents or plus-ones required—while keeping the drinks flowing all night. “It’s all the fun of a wedding with none of the commitment,” says Magiros. “What more could you ask for?”

Nothing warms your soul quite like a hearty bowl of chili or a craft beer on a cold day. In years past, local homebrewing club Baltibrew has brought the two together for its annual Chilibrew competition at Zion Lutheran Church.

“Obviously chili is a great fall favorite,” says Jacob Wolf, a longtime Baltibrew member. “And there’s nothing better than spicy chili with a cold beer. When you pair the two together, they make a great team.”

Aside from the seasonal appeal, Wolf adds that the pairing also makes sense conceptually. He says that, much like beer, chili is versatile and allows home cooks to really get creative with their recipes.

“There are all different types of beers and people like to seek out their own unique styles,” he says. “Chili has that same draw. A home cook can take a favorite chili recipe and make it their own in that same spirit of making home-brewed beer.”

In honor the official start of chili season, we rounded up some of the best recipes in town. Here’s where to get your fix:

Abbey Burger Bistro: Head to this beloved burger spot, which has locations on both sides of the harbor and a new addition in Mt. Washington, to sample “Big Al’s” chili made Southern style with a signature blend of spices. Order a bowl as a starter, or go all out with the cavatappi chili mac and cheese. Multiple locations including 1041 Marshall St. 443-453-9698.

Baltimore Soup Company: The daily rotation at this Towson soup spot includes a Texas beef chili that stews angus beef with green peppers, kidney beans, green chiles, onions, garlic, and Southwestern seasonings. The eatery offers specialty soup orders by the gallon if you’re hoping to stock up for the cold season. 3 W. Chesapeake Ave., Towson, 443-275-2325

Duda’s Tavern: Regulars at this decades-old staple in Fells Point rave about its crab cakes and burger specials. But another must-try on the menu is the house chili bake, which is a safe bet if you need to warm up on a cold day. The dish tops mild chili with onions, housemade croutons, and a generous helping of cheddar cheese and warms it all together in the oven. 1600 Thames St. 410-276-9719

Five and Dime Ale House: If you need a spot to retreat from the cold while strolling along the Avenue in Hampden, head inside this corner pub to choose from a lengthy list of local beers, sandwiches, flatbreads, tacos, and other snacks. You can’t go wrong starting things off with a cup of sweet-and-spicy alehouse chili garnished with sour cream and shreds of cheddar. 901 W. 36th St. 443-835-2179

The Flying Avocado Cafe: Vegans frequently flock to this health-conscious cafe in Owings Mills for colorful salads and dairy-free dishes. The bright eatery also makes a killer vegan chili with black, pinto, and kidney beans, as well as crushed tomatoes and a blend of chili spices. 10210 S. Dolfield Rd., Owings Mills. 443-471-2600

G&A Restaurant: Since 1927, this Highlandtown favorite has been slinging its signature Coney Island hot dogs topped with onions, ketchup, mustard, cheese, and, of course, an age-old chili sauce. The recipe, which was featured on an episode of Food Network’s Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives, blends ground beef with paprika, celery salt, and chili powder. 3802 Eastern Ave. 410-276-9422

Max’s Taphouse: It only makes sense that this Fells Point corner bar—which features thousands of bottles, five casks, and more than 100 taps—would incorporate beer into its chili recipe. The hearty helping is topped with the classic cheese and onions and served in a bread bowl with tortilla chips. 737 S. Broadway. 410-675-6297

Mother’s Grille: Snag a seat at this Federal Hill hangout to catch a game while digging into traditional tailgate fare. Aside from the stellar Buffalo wings, soft pretzels, and nachos, Mother’s also highlights a black bean chili made with seasoned ground beef. Customize your bowl with toppings like bacon, cheese, and sour cream. 1113 S. Charles St. 410-244-8686

Pickles Pub: This pregame spot across from Camden Yards has all of the essential sports snacks. (Don’t miss the namesake beer-battered pickles.) The soup menu lists Guinness stew, a classic Maryland crab, and the fan-favorite “Gameday Chili” made with ground beef and topped with fresh jalapeño, onions, cheddar, and sour cream. 520 Washington Blvd. 410-752-1784

Spirits Tavern: At this cozy watering hole in Upper Fells Point, the “Hot Rod Chili” served with house tortilla chips is a staple. On Mondays, order a bowl of the Natty Boh-infused soup either simple style or topped with “the works” (onions, sour cream, and cheese). 1901 Bank St. 410-563-1612

Mankind’s eternal fascination with the moon has inspired generations to marvel at the orb’s bright, serene presence in our nighttime sky. Now Brooklyn-based artist Spencer Finch is using the moon’s alluring luster as inspiration for the BMA’s new installation, Moon Dust, on view February 21 through October 13, 2024. For the next six years, Finch will dangle some 150 chandeliers (each one boasting 417 bulbs) from the museum’s ceiling, using a variety of lights to mimic the chemical composition of the moon’s surface as collected during the 1972 lunar landing mission of Apollo 17. But much like the real celestial body, you don’t need to know a lot about chemistry or science to let it light up your imagination.

Visitors can learn about America’s love of cars by piling into a real 1962 Chrysler Newport station wagon, pumping fuel at a mock gas station, and viewing advertisements from the car heydays of the mid-20th century.

Union Craft Brewing, 1700 Union Ave. 12-6 p.m. Free.

We’re all especially excited about the sun right now—what with the once-in-a-lifetime total solar eclipse taking over our skies on Monday afternoon. One day early, celebrate that giant star and the high-heat of summer with a Sunday Funday at the Union Craft Brewing. The local brewery will be releasing its guava and passionfruit flavored Older Pro white wine barrel-aged goses variants with tacos by Clavel and ice cream by The Charmery. There will be mini pools in place for cooling off, and Reggae Spin Cycle spinning the feel-good tunes throughout the afternoon.

There’s a good chance you’re already planning to spend your Saturday daydrinking at Max’s Taphouse, but with the help of Diamondback Beer, there’s now some extra incentive. On Saturday, head to the legendary bar for its annual Hopfest celebration, where the local craft brewer will be realizing its new collaboration beer, DQ’d. The brew boasts blueberry and raspberry flavors with a heavy hit of oats and wheat and a touch of vanilla bean. With such a killer combo, be sure to get it while it lasts.

It’s not every weekend that a national brand throws a festival in Baltimore, but the energy drink’s social entrepreneurship program sees something in Charm City. For the last week, the festival has hosted events, lectures, and workshops throughout in Station North, and this Sunday, they’re throwing a celebration of creativity and community.
For the second year, the Maryland Zoo will be taken over not by sneakers and strollers but leggings and yoga mats. Last year, the Free to Breathe Yoga Challenge helped raise more than $70,000 for increasing the survival rate of lung cancer, which is the leading cancer killer in the U.S. This year, they hope to double that figure. With deep breaths and restorative exhales, this yoga retreat will feature eight hour-long sessions with some of the city’s best instructors, as well as a walk-in wellness marketplace for fitness demos and healthy food and drink. Whether you downward dog as an individual or reverse warrior with an entire team, open your lungs and support a good cause.

It’s been 100 years since the Wockenfuss Candy Company first crafted its sweets in Northeast Baltimore, and this weekend marks the fourth time the family has offered a factory tour, as coveted an occasion as a trip through the chocolate factory with Willy Wonka. In Baltimore, Wockenfuss is our Wonka, as we’ve come to love their cocoa-covered caramels, creamy by-the-pound fudge, and tantalizing gourmet truffles for a full century. The magical excursion will take you on a behind-the-scenes stroll through the sweet-smelling factory, and while no secret family recipes will be revealed, there will be plenty of candy samples along the way. The tours will run all day, but they are first-come, first-serve, so be sure to arrive early or late.

Max’s Taphouse, 737 S. Broadway. 11 a.m.-9 p.m. $25. 443-513-4647.

Just across the Chesapeake Bay, the Eastern Shore offers us city-dwellers a rural respite from our urban grind, filled with scenic views, quaint waterfront towns, and, as of late, a growing brood of beloved breweries. From Ocean City to St. Michaels, there are some 13 beer-makers micro-brewing their own masterpieces as good as Flying Dog, Heavy Seas, or Union. This weekend, get to know two of the best, as Max’s Taphouse takes you on a road trip across the pond to Burley Oak Brewing in Berlin and RAR Brewing in Cambridge. The former is home to creative beer names like Hot Line Sting (we’re down for any kind of Drake reference) and Pants are Cumbersome (so true). The latter is a personal favorite, located on a quiet main street with garage-door windows, ’90s hip-hop, bedazzled tater tots, sand-covered shuffleboard, and perfect pints of their flagship Nanticoke Nectar. At the end of the night, when you’re dropped off at Max’s or if you missed the bus entirely, scramble inside for more shore suds on tap.

April 10: Not Alone Baltimore: A Monument Quilt Display

Howard Street & North Avenue. 12-5 p.m. Free. 336-404-0959.

This Saturday, the streets of Station North will be covered in not just cement but dozens of onlookers and soft cotton cloth. For one afternoon, two blocks of North Avenue will be blanketed in a red, white, and pink quilt made from 1,500 stories of sexual and domestic abuse survivors, aimed at eliminating shame and blame to build a new culture of public support. Led by the local art activism organization, FORCE, this installation is part of an ongoing series that has set up shop all across the country, including a stint on the National Mall. There will be poetry, performances, quilt-making activities, and a resource fair, as well as Baltimore’s top four mayoral candidates—Pugh, Dixon, Stokes, and Embry—who will host a forum on the topic, the first of its kind in the state. Be sure to swing by and see it, and keep your eye out for our June issue, with a full story on the women behind the project.

April 9: Rihanna

Royal Farms Arena, 201 W. Baltimore St. 7:30 p.m. $35-272. 410-347-2020.

It was about a year ago this month that pop royalty Rihanna was planning to come to Baltimore. In the days following the Freddie Gray unrest, the 28-year-old powerhouse behind chart-topping hits like “Umbrella” and “Diamonds” reportedly wanted to walk with local protesters and perform a free concert in a city still reeling from riots and heartbreak. For somewhat vague reasons, perhaps pertaining to a lack of permit, she never made it, but now, on the heels of her much-anticipated album, Anti, RiRi will finally find her way to 410 fans. For one Saturday night, watch this ballsy, self-proclaimed bad girl perform her old favorites (“Pon de Replay,” please) and new minimal masterpieces (“Work,” with a surprise appearance by its featured meme-dream Drake, pretty please). With eight Grammys, eight Top 10
albums, and over a decade’s worth of artistic flair and fearless fashion choices under her belt, this unstoppable starlet is a force to be reckoned with. On Saturday, expect her to run this town with every ounce of fire that we missed last spring. We hope, ironically, she plays her mid-aughts throwback, “Don’t Stop the Music.”

April 10: Bubble Soccer at Patterson Park

Patterson Park, 27 S. Patterson Park Ave. 3-6 p.m. $30-275. 443-890-4200.

The weekend’s weather might be crappy, but on Sunday, the skies will part, the sun will come out, your sleeves will come off, and in you’ll go into a giant inflatable bubble. For one afternoon, participate in the strangest game to grace the grasses of Highlandtown, as Bubble Soccer takes over Patterson Park. Donning a giant plastic suit and sneakers, you can run, jump, bump, and stumble into your opposition without feeling a thing, or, like we would do, just roll around in the grass. We’re still not sure we understand the point, but regardless, it’s a chance to enjoy the early days of spring and try something new on for size. Sounds like the makings of an oddly good time.

Feb. 12-14: Max’s Taphouse Belgian Beer Weekend

Max’s
Taphouse, 737 S. Broadway. 11 a.m.-2 a.m. Free. 410-675-6297. maxs.com.

Our best advice to you is: Arrive early. Because as soon as Max’s opens
its doors tomorrow, lines will wrap down the street for the bonanza that is the
annual Belgian Beer Fest. Now in its 12th year, the corner bar will once again
teem with local beer lovers for an A-Game gathering of rare and virtually
impossible-to-find bottles from across the Atlantic. They’ll be tapping some
100-plus drafts, carrying more than 250 bottles, and, best of all, there will
be a full Belgian-inspired food menu, so expect waffles, frites, and brats to
accompany your bier.

Feb. 13: Gilded Lily Burlesque’s Tassels & Champagne

Creative Alliance, 3134 Eastern Ave. 7
& 10 p.m. $20-550. 410-276-1651. creativealliance.org.

Get in the mood
this weekend with the bawdy belles of Baltimore’s Gilded Lily Burlesque. This
year during their annual Valentine’s celebration, the titillating troupe
transports you to the red-hot rhythm-and-blues clubs of 1940s Chicago. That iconic
era will inspire the costumes, sets, and music of the evening. Think Muddy
Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Willie Dixon, Slim Harpo, Buddy Guy, Bo Diddley—to name a
few. So wear your best FDR-era garb, indulge in some bubbly, and let loose to
the moves of these hometown starlets with the rock-and-rolling sounds of Jonny
Grave and the Tombstones.

HEAR

Feb. 13: Valentine’s Day Dance Party: A Moveable Feast Benefit

Ottobar, 2549 N. Howard St. 8 p.m.-1 a.m. $10. 410-662-0069. theottobar.com.

For the third
year, spend your Valentine’s Eve at the Ottobar to benefit the great cause that
is Moveable Feast. Local musicians like electronic artist Dan Deacon, DJ James Nasty, futuristic R&B duo
Chiffon, and many more will show their support for the local effort to put
healthy food on the table for people in Maryland with AIDS, cancer, and other
life-threatening illnesses, already difficult in a city where 1 in 4 residents
lives in a food desert. Beyond that, it’s a perfect excuse to warm up on a
frigidly cold winter weekend.

Feb. 12-14: Anti-Valentine’s Day

Mobtown’s Anti-Valentine’s Day Extravaganza: Mobtown Ballroom, 861 Washington Blvd. 8 p.m. Free. facebook.com. The Bitter Heart Club: Ware House 518, 518 N. Charles St. 12 p.m. Free. 443-835-1517. banditosbk.com. Galentine’s Day Dance Party: Sticky Rice, 1634 Aliceanna St. 10:30 p.m. Free. 443-682-8243. facebook.com. Galentine’s on Valentines: Church & Company, 3647 Falls Rd. 7 p.m. $7. 410-493-0441. churchandco.org.

Whether you hate Hallmark holidays, are a sentiment sourpuss, or find yourself single and ready to mingle, there are plenty of ways to buck the te amo trend this Valentine’s weekend. At Mobtown Ballroom, skip the packed bars and restaurants of Baltimore and instead bring a date or ride solo for a night of drinks and dancing in Pigtown. At the Bitter Heart Club, listen to angsty music like Alanis Morrisette and Joy Division, crush cocktails made with Charm City Meadworks, D.C.’s True Syrups, and try tiki-inspired concoctions like the “Tinder Special.” At Cupid is Stupid, drown your sorrows or imbibe with besties as the Fed Hill hangout will feature $5 bombs, tequila, beer, and discounted carafes of sangria and wine. At the Galentine’s Day Dance Party, gather your gals for all-night drink specials and music, while at Galentine’s on Valentine’s, you can head bang to all-female rock bands as they perform their indie dream-pop or dark punk sounds.

Well this certainly seems like the winter that just won’t end. So before the last flake falls, throw on a pair of Hunters and your favorite snow suit, and make the trek to one of these establishments featuring snow-day specials:

The Rowhouse Grille proclaims this is the “last snow day drinking party of the year (we hope).” The Federal Hill bar will be offering 2-for-1 drinks all day today and its typical happy hour from 4-7 p.m. with $1 oysters, $7 Irish nachos, and a $7 assorted fruit and cheese plate.

The Bagby Group restaurants are getting in on the fun, as Ten Ten is offering an all-day happy hour ($5 wines, $6 cocktails, $4 beers, and various bites from $4-7) plus $1 Korean tacos. Right next door, Bagby Pizza Company will have $2 off beers all day.

Kooper’s Tavern in Fells Point is having a celebrating of Belgian beer on this snow day, with select brews starting as low as $3

Starting at 5 p.m., Max’s Taphouse will begin be offering casks new and select beers like Heavy Seas Desert Island Scottish Ale, Union Balt The More with Orange Zest, and New Belguim Portage with simcoe hops and Snapshot with citra hops.

Speaking of beer, the Federal Hill bar Brewer’s Cask is open early today, with the kitchen coming on board at noon.

Just down the street is Mad River, which never needs much of an excuse to get rowdy. Today, the multi-level bar is offering $15 all-you-can-drink deals and 50-cent wings.

For its part, Dooby’s in Mt. Vernon is boasting an apres-ski theme with “boozy coffees, rich hot chocolates, 12 beers on tap, and food. Lots of food.”

Alexander’s Tavern is celebrating its snow day with $6 pizzas all day, $2.75 for the spicy UFO Gingerland wheat ales, Sam Adams Winter Lager, and Southern Tier 2XMas double-spiced ale. The bar’s happy hour starts at 3.

And, I for one totally agree with what Alexander’s says: “Let’s get this winter stuff out of here, once and for all!”

When beer-lovers think about Stillwater Ales, they think Belgian farmhouse ales, an old-world design, and all of that culminating at the dimly lit Of Love & Regret in Brewer’s Hill.

Well that is about to change with the launch of Stillwater’s new line called Contemporary Works. Not only does the design get completely flipped on its head, but the beer styles are based on American craft-brewing, something you’d never expect from Stillwater.

“I originally started to be a unique brand, to make beers that didn’t fall into categories,” says Stillwater owner Brian Strumke. “Inevitably, you get put into categories. It became that I just make Belgian-style beers. So I figured the most shocking and progressive thing I could do would be to break down that stereotype.”

The result is three new beers, including a Mono dry-hopped pilsner, a Stereo IPA, and a Surround imperial oak-smoked wheat stout—which will all debut this weekend at Of Love & Regret and at Max’s Belgian Beer Fest.

“These beers are still complex and elegant,” Strumke says. “The Pilsner isn’t typical since it’s dry-hopped with fashionable new-world hops and the stout has this oak-smoked wheat malt.”

The label art, thanks to a collaboration with D.C.-based firm Committee on Opprobriations, is also a stark departure from Stillwater’s original artisanal line—more mid-century modern than trippy old-world.

And next month, Stillwater is debuting three more, including Yacht, a dry-hopped session lager that comes in 16-oz. cans, and two more IPAs.

Strumke says that the past five years have been an adventure. “My frequent flyer miles tell me that a lot has happened,” he laughs. “But I have learned a ton and the business has now proven itself. I’ve succeeded in building the base and now it’s time to branch out.”

Craft beer gets more experimental everyday—throwing everything into the mix from oysters to Old Bay. In the latest creative flavor combination comes Flying Dog Brewery‘s partnership with Otterbein’s Bakery. Rather than actually include cookies in the brew process, each beer is instead an ideal pairing with an Otterbein cookie.

The holiday collection consists of four beers: Imperial Hefeweizen (sugar cookies), Oatmeal Raisin Stout (oatmeal raisin cookies), Oak-Aged Hazelnut Scotch Ale (ginger cookies), and Roasted Peanut Brown Ale (chocolate chip cookies).

“In developing each of these recipes, we didn’t simply want to recreate the flavors of each cookie,” said Flying Dog brewmaster Matt Brophy. “Instead, we used ingredients like specialty-roasted malts and new yeast strains to create flavor profiles that enhance and complement each pairing.”

We got a chance to sample the holiday collection this week and we agree that the roasted flavors are a nice counterpoint to the sweet cookies. Our favorite has to be the Roasted Peanut Brown Ale, which pairs with, admittedly, one of the best cookies on the planet. Washing down the Otterbein chocolate chip cookie with a sip of this 5-percent-ABV brown ale with nutty characteristics is like one giant candy bar experience. The combination is even dunk-worthy.

Flying Dog is hosting a release party with the beers and cookie pairings on Friday at Max’s Taphouse at 5 p.m. Additionally, in a major coincidence, Full Tilt Brewing will be re-releasing its 2014 batch of Berger Cookie Chocolate Stout (same ingredients as last year with some slight alterations to its recipe) that same night at Smaltimore in Canton at 7 p.m.

Because why waste your money on milk?

Drink away your Snowpocalypse troubles this weekend at the 10th annual Belgian Beer Festival at Max’s Taphouse.
Starting today at 11 a.m. and going Monday, Max’s will be showcasing
200 different Belgian drafts and nearly 300 bottles of imported
specialty beers, some of which will be making their U.S. debut.

Prices
for the rare beers will range from $3.50-12 for drafts and in sample
size and some of the beers featured are from breweries such as Bastogne,
Lupus, Verzet, Fantome, Cantillon, De Dolle, and Alvinee—all located in
Belgium

Another exciting element this year is
a bit more local, as Max’s will offer homemade beers and collaborations
with local breweries. Today, Max’s will release their beer called 10 (a
collaboration with Maryland-based Burley Oak and Dawson Liquors);
Tomorrow, Max’s and Stillwater Artisanal Ales
release their beer called Decade (a crimson farmhouse ale); Sunday,
Max’s will feature special kegs from Oxbow Brewery (Maine) and Perennial
Ales (Missouri); and on Monday, the bar will feature its collaboration
with The Brewer’s Art called 72 Hour Sour.

For
the second year in a row, on Monday the bar will focus on sour beers,
which are becoming increasingly popular with clientele—especially
women—according to Max’s cellarman and general manager Casey Hard. In
general, the staff at Max’s gets inundated with questions about these
rare brews all year round.

“It is amazing how many requests we get
for our unique Belgian beers,” Hard said in a press
release. “Unfortunately, we are unable to inventory these beers all year
long because the Belgian breweries only brew a small amount. We are
very fortunate to get what we receive.”

Additionally, to wash down all of the delicious beer, customers can indulge in Belgian chocolates and frites on Max’s menu.

Draft magazine just came out with its 6th annual list of “America’s 100 Best Beer Bars” and two local favorites made the cut. Not surprisingly, Mt. Vernon brewhouse The Brewer’s Art and Fells Point standby Max’s Taphouse were on the national list.

According to Draft,
a “good beer bar no longer equals a zillion taps,” but rather
“thoughtfully selected beer with an eye toward variety, trends, and
tradition, in the kind of place you’d want to stay awhile, delivered by
someone who knows their stuff.”

Though both Max’s and Brewer’s Art
fall into that category, we hope that next time the magazine can dig a
little deeper. There are so many great beer bars in Baltimore that went
unrecognized, including (but certainly not limited to) Of Love and Regret, Mahaffey’s Pub, Pratt Street Ale House, Brewers Cask, Racers Cafe, Frisco Taphouse & Brewery, and Alewife.

A
lot of these places don’t fall in the “zillion taps” category, but I
consider them all thoughtful and knowledgeable spots that really care
about the beer experience.

Of Love and Regret

The founder of Baltimore’s Stillwater
Artisanal Ales, Brian Strumke, is behind this beer-lover’s bar. For the
beer nerds, this is your go-to for rare imports and unique
collaborations. 1028 S. Conkling Street, 410-327-0760, ofloveandregret.com

Mahaffey’s Pub

With
a cask, 20 drafts, and more than 90 domestic and imported bottles,
there’s plenty to choose from. The menu’s rundown on what to expect from
each brew makes choosing a little easier. 2706 Dillon Street,
410-276-9899, mahaffeyspub.com

Pratt Street Ale House

Home
to Oliver Ales, its own beer is brewed with a system imported from the
UK. Twenty drafts, including hand-pump selections (try the Best Bitter),
will make you feel as if you’re across the pond. 206 W. Pratt Street,
410-244-8900, prattstreetalehouse.com

Heavy Seas Alehouse

All
the taps here are the brewery’s own, making this an ideal place to
imbibe a Baltimore-brewed beer. Beer enthusiasts flock for the draft and
growler specials every week and the tapping of a special firkin. 1300
Bank Street, 410-522-0850, heavyseasalehouse.com

Racers Cafe

If
you’re looking for a casual dive bar with exceptional beer, look no
further. The 13 rotating drafts and even longer bottle list include a
variety of domestic craft breweries and some hard-to-find imports. 7732
Harford Road, Parkville, 410-882-5212

Brewer’s Cask

This
may look like your typical Federal Hill bar, but on the draft list,
you’ll find a respectable variety of domestic craft beers. A bottle list
with more than 50 options and nightly specials will keep you coming
back. 1236 Light Street, 410-BREWERS, brewerscask.com

Frisco Taphouse & Brewery

A
suburban beer destination, Frisco is home to weekly brewery events. An
electronic screen provides to-the-minute updates on more than 50
drafts, and the bottle list goes beyond your standard imports. 6695
Dobbin Road, Columbia, 410-312-4907, friscogrille.com

Metropolitan Coffeehouse and Wine Bar

Every
Thursday you’ll find beer geeks huddled around this gem’s upstairs bar
for a cask night. There’s also an extensive bottle list and modest but
diverse draft selection. 902 S. Charles Street, 410-234-0235, metrobalto.com

Max’s Taphouse

Home
to Maryland’s largest beer selection, Max’s boasts 102 drafts, five
hand-pumped cask ales, and a mind-boggling 1,200 bottles. If you aren’t
sure what you want (we don’t blame you), expert bartenders are happy to
help. 737 S. Broadway, 410-675-6297, maxs.com

Alewife

The
chalkboard listing Alewife’s 40 rotating drafts includes a selection of
local craft breweries and West Coast standouts. A 90-plus bottle list
features gypsy-brewers, international imports, and rare finds. 21 N.

Union Craft Brewing, the latest micro-brewhouse in town, is celebrating the launch of its first two beers with a release party at Max’s Taphouse on Friday.

I got a chance to speak with co-founder Jon Zerivitz, who said that about three years ago he quit his day job as a graphic designer at T. Rowe Price to pursue his passion of home brewing. Through mutual friends, Zerivitz met Kevin Blodger, the medal-winning head brewer at Gordon Biersch in Chicago, who was interested in coming back home to Baltimore.

The two then co-founded Union Craft Brewing, located in a 7,200-square-foot warehouse in Woodberry. “We really wanted to be a neighborhood brewery and be right here in the city,” Zerivitz said. “There was some red tape working with city zoning and retrofitting an old building, but it was important to us.”

The 20-barrel brewhouse is now ready to debut its first two beers: Duckpin Pale Ale and Balt Altbier. Zerivitz says that he wanted both of his flagship beers to be approachable. The Duckpin is made with a relatively new hop variety grown in Australia and New Zealand, giving off a fruity, citrus profile. The Balt Altbier refers to an old, German style of brewing and is copper-colored with a malty, slightly sweet flavor.

The two new brews will be served on draft and in firkins at a release party at Max’s Taphouse starting at 5 p.m. on Friday. After that, Union Craft will roll them out in Hampden bars on July 3 and in Federal Hill spots on July 5.

As for the future, Zerivitz says look out for a summer seasonal available in August, as well as brewery tours and tastings around that same time.
