The first thing I do is go to meetings, and then after those first initial meetings, usually we get a break. That’s when I eat. At the facility, there’s usually croissan’wiches: bacon, egg, and cheese. So I’ll have two of those for my breakfast. Then it’s back to meetings:
offense, defense, and team meetings. We have a walk-through
I’ll eat a little something, but I don’t like to eat much before going out to play, so maybe I’ll have oatmeal and some bacon.

If Ravens shutout Browns, they’ll break a 72-year-old NFL record.
Not to get greedy, but after watching the way the Ravens defense performed in week one in Cincinnati, we are more confident than ever going against the Cleveland Browns at home. And it turns out, if this Sunday’s game is another shutout, the Ravens will break a 72-year-old NFL record. According to ESPN Stats & Information, the last team to shutout its opponents during the first two games of the season was, ironically, the Cleveland Rams in 1945. If this all seems a little pie-in-the-sky, consider a few facts:

The game is at M&T Bank Stadium and the Ravens defense has allowed the NFL’s fewest points at home since John Harbaugh became coach in 2008.

DeShone Kizer, the Browns rookie quarterback, is making his first career debut. Godspeed, DeShone.

The Ravens held the Bengals scoreless on 12 drives last week, forcing a turnover every time Cincinnati got inside Baltimore’s 10-yard line

During the offseason, Browns’ head coach Hue Jackson himself called the Ravens defense “legendary.”

But the cornerstone of the defense, Terrell Suggs, who deflected a key pass last Sunday, says his strategy is to go into this week fresh. “As far as we are concerned, last week didn’t happen,” he told ESPN. “We are taking it as our first game, and of course, it is our first home game. It is our home opener. You kind of have to have a short memory. Because this is the NFL; your fate can change in a week. We are acting like last week was just a dream.”

Bizarre giveaway at M&T Bank Stadium this Sunday.
Speaking of the Ravens, this has to be one of the weirdest giveaways we’ve ever seen at a local sports game. Biotech firm Orig3n will be giving all fans that enter M&T Bank Stadium on Sunday free DNA test kits. Fans who opt to participate can learn about their genetic makeup in four different genes, but they first have to swab the inside of their cheek, drop the sample into a stadium bin, and register with the company online. Among the findings, fans will be able to discover if they are “generally predisposed” to have difficulty metabolizing Vitamin D.

While we personally think this is odd and invasive on many levels (though clever marketing for Boston-based Orig3n), the Ravens are calling it “one of the most innovative events a partner has ever spearheaded.” If you say so.

Maryland football off to impressive start.
When rumors swirled that Maryland was joining the Big 10, a lot of fans feared that our state football team wouldn’t be able to hold its own. A lot of those worries have been dissuaded so far this season, starting with a 51-41 Maryland win against the longhorns in Austin. In true Terp style, the victory didn’t come withouts hiccups, including quarterback Tyrrell Pigrome (not even the planned starter) tearing his ACL.Thankfully, true freshman and big recruit Kasim Hill saved the day—earning 57 yards and punching in a three-yard run to put the Terrapins up by 10 with just over seven minutes left in the game.

Though Towson University football isn’t quite on the same level as UT, last week’s 63-17 victory over the Tigers was pretty amazing. (Sorry to our buddies on Osler Drive.) One of the key takeaways is just how impressive the Terps running game is. Against Towson, Maryland rushed for 367 yards and six touchdowns—and running backs averaged 10.2 yards-per-carry. Look for backs Ty Johnson, Lorenzo Harrison III, and Jake Funk to continue to excel—as well as wide receiver D.J. Moore to capitalize on Hill’s success as QB.

Cal Ripken Jr. will not be commentator during baseball playoffs.
After some, ahem, lackluster reception, Turner Sports confirmed that Cal Ripken Jr. will not be returning to TBS’ Major League Baseball playoff broadcasts. Ripken started working with TBS in 2007 as a studio analyst, transition to game broadcasts in 2012, where he’s worked every post-season since.

Despite his tenure, Ripken never seemed quite comfortable in the role. The Sun‘s TV critic David Zurawick wrote, “Ripken was sometimes silent for stretches of time, even after Ernie Johnson, TBS’ smooth play-by-play announcer, tried to tee it up for his analysis. Compared to MASN’s Jim Palmer, who is 15 years older, Ripken seemed somewhere between somnolent and comatose in this playoff series during the first two games.” For his part, Ripken acknowledged the learning curve, saying to Awful Announcing in 2016: “I get five or six, I think, of the Sunday games on TBS. So you kind of get back into the position. And over time there is an accumulation of your comfort level, but I could benefit by doing more reps where you could feel like it becomes second nature to you.”

Though it’s not his strongest suit, we will miss the familiar voice of Carl, I mean, Cal during the MLB playoffs.

We love Ravens Ronnie Stanley. And we love Lola.
Ravens linebacker Ronnie Stanley has made it no secret that he’s an animal lover.

Orioles are first team to reach 100 home runs.
Well it’s safe to say the Orioles had a pretty good week. At the top, first baseman Chris Davis was named the American League Player of the Week, considering he homered in five consecutive games. Next, coming off a series sweep by Toronto, the O’s really needed to get their mojo back in Boston. And we did, winning the series and firmly cementing us at the top of the AL East. Along the way, we managed to be the first team in the league to reach 100 home runs (now up to 103), which doesn’t come as a total shock with power hitters Mark Trumbo, Chris Davis, Manny Machado, and Adam Jones rounding out the top of the roster. Then our series game to a glorious end when Tyler Wilson pitched a phenomenal game, keeping the Red Sox scoreless for eight innings. Let’s hope we keep it up as the dreaded Blue Jays come to Baltimore this weekend.

The Ravens released Eugene Monroe.
Just one month after Ravens tackle Eugene Monroe told The New York Times that he thinks the NFL should stop testing players for marijuana, the Ravens have announced his release. The injury-riddled offensive tackle also told the Times he was unsure whether one had to do with the other. “I can’t say for sure whether or not my stance on medical cannabis was the reason the Ravens released me,” Monroe said. “However, as I’ve said in the past, they have distanced themselves from me and made it clear that they do not support my advocacy.”

We’re not exactly sure what Steve Bisciotti and co.’s stance on medical marijuana is but, as ESPN’s Jamison Hensley points out, the release caps off the “worst deal in the franchise’s history.” A little over two years ago, the Ravens guaranteed Monroe $17.5 million and he only made 17 starts. “If you’re counting at home, that amounts to $1.03 million per start or $17,500 per snap over the past two seasons,” Hensley wrote. We are pretty sure that (and the drafting of Notre Dame’s Ronnie Stanley) had more to do with his departure than any sort of politics.

Ravens rookie Ronnie Stanley chose “not-so-adoptable” dog from BARCS.
Speaking of Stanley, he is quickly warming up to fans. This past weekend, Stanley and his girlfriend stopped by BARCS with a simple request: “We are looking for a dog that’s been there a long time and is maybe not-so-adoptable.” Cue the heart-eyes emoji. After meeting with a handful of dogs, they came upon Winter, a 6-year-old pit mix who had been locked inside a room in an empty home with no food, water, or fresh air. She had been dehydrated and scared, and a has a sagging belly that indicates she’s given birth to a lot of up puppies. Stanley’s response? “Well, that’s just what happens when you’ve had babies.” If this photo from BARCS is any indication, it looks like the beginning of a really beautiful friendship.

Cambridge brewery makes beer inspired by Billy Ripken.
Craft breweries get more creative every day. And we were super excited when Cambridge-based RaR Brewing released a new sour ale this week inspired by an Oriole. Not Brooks, not Eddie (though that exists and is delicious), and most definitely not Cal. No, RaR’s new Puck Face pays homage to infielder Billy “Fuck Face” Ripken.

The Lemondrop dry-hopped Berliner clocks in at only 3.6-percent ABV and has flavors of lemon hard candy on the nose, with tasting notes of key lime and lemon pith. Put more simply by the brewers: “Think Billy Ripken on a hot summer day, crushing brews and hating his brother.” Perfect on so many levels.

‘Cause two out of three ain’t bad.
Hey, what a duel last night between young right-hander Kevin Gausman and Yankees ace Masahiro Tanaka. They went at it for eight scoreless innings and then the O’s won it 1-0 in the bottom of the 10th when Hyun Soo Kim got things started with an old-school Baltimore chop. The best part? Gausman’s dominating performance enabled us to take two out of three in the season-opening series from the Bronx Bombers. And like Meatloaf sang in 1977, that’s not bad. In fact, Gausman looked like he was channeling Jim Palmer circa 1977 last night. Maybe Earl, err Buck, is right about this kid.

Ravens draft first Navy QB since Roger Staubach.
Last week was pretty good for Keenan Reynolds. First, he and his teammates were at the White House getting presented with the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy (which goes annually to the top military academy team) by President Obama, and then Saturday, he was drafted by the Ravens. Reynolds is the first Annapolis quarterback drafted since Staubach in 1965—not bad company—but he’ll get his shot at a pro career at wide receiver. It looks like he also has the Secretary of the Navy’s approval to play.

Mel Kiper gives the Ravens draft an “A.”
Kiper is a Baltimore native so maybe he’s got a hometown bias. But we don’t care because he’s also the original Draft Day swami. Basically, it looks like the Ravens filled a lot of holes, picking Notre Dame left tackle Ronnie Stanley in the first round and then grabbing a couple of pass rushers. Lot of folks, including Kiper, seem to think the Ravens may get lucky with fourth-round selection Kenneth Dixon, a speedy running back from Louisiana Tech, who posted huge numbers in college and could eventually takeover from Justin Forsett.

Everything in the college lacrosse world is happening right now.
The third-ranked Maryland Terrapins won the Big Ten regular season title after besting Johns Hopkins at Homewood April 30. They have since advanced to the Big Ten tourney championship—also at Homewood—this Saturday at 6 p.m. where they’ll face Rutgers. No. 11 ranked Towson, meanwhile, will take on Fairfield at Johnny Unitas Stadium, also Saturday, at 1 p.m.—setting up a great potential doubleheader for local lax fans. And, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention that Loyola has already won the Patriot League title, earning a bid to the NCAA tourney. One more thing, UMBC men’s coach Don Zimmerman announced he was stepping down after 23 years at the helm there. Kudos to Zimmerman on a great career—he entered the season 8th among active coaches in wins and 17th in all-time winning percentage.

Baltimore Ravens draft Ronnie Stanley.
In the first night of the NFL Draft on Thursday, the Ravens selected offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley from Notre Dame with its sixth pick. The 6’6″ 312-lb. tackle will provide much-needed protection for Joe Flacco, many equating the OT with Tyron Smith of the Dallas Cowboys. An added bonus is that Stanley actually played basketball in high school, giving him quick feet and a great run game. Stanley comes into the league as one of the top two offensive tackles in the draft, alongside Laremy Tunsil of Ole Miss, whose work ethic has been questioned recently—especially since a video of Tunsil smoking out of a bong with a gas mask was posted to his Twitter account minutes before the draft. Thankfully, Stanley had great numbers in the NFL Combine and is completely clean off the field. Phew!

Under Armour’s Jordan Spieth becomes Snapchat star.
Clearly Under Armour athlete Jordan Spieth didn’t spend much time mourning his surprising collapse at the Masters. Instead, the young golf star has been vacationing in Baker’s Bay in the Bahamas with Justin Thomas and Smylie Kaufman while Rickie Fowler documents the whole thing on Snapchat. There were some boat trips, dinners on the water, time spent in ceremonial headdresses, (because, obviously), and even a video joking about Spieth’s Masters performance. Spieth is relaxing while he can since he has a busy stretch coming up in May before the U.S. Open on June 16-19. But, for now it’s all fun in the Snapchat sun.
