The construction of the Milton Inn dates to the mid-18th century and it began its life as a coach stop for local Quakers. It is still a haven of hospitality in Baltimore County, only now it welcomes diners with discerning palates from all around the region.

The announcement that the Foreman-Wolf Group were going to reopen The Milton Inn— its first restaurant in the county—created a shockwave of culinary joy.

Catonsville became Baltimore County’s first state-recognized Arts and Entertainment District in 2020. The award was given by the Maryland State Arts Council, and it is easy to see why. There’s no better way to spend a hot, humid summer day than lazing down the Gunpowder River in a tube. The always cool and shaded river winds its way by pastures and woodlands, meandering parallel to the NCR hike and bike trail. Tubing is the antidote for harried lives.

The Monkton Bike shop, housed in the historic Monkton village, offers tubes for rent for kids and adults. It has also marked two tubing routes accessible by foot. Simply walk north on the NCR trail and look for the blue tree markers to find the path where you put in at the river. When you coast under the Monkton Road bridge you’ve reached the end of your float.

The Gunpowder is generally tranquil and often shallow enough to walk and splash in, making it a perfect outing even with young kids.

ue and Thom Rinker, age 74 and 75 respectively, were feeling very isolated in their condo in Baltimore County. “We were ready for a change,” says Sue.
“My mother had lived at a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) for 20 years and some of our friends had moved to that type of community. We really liked what a CCRC offered.”

According to seniorliving.org, a CCRC (also known as a Life Plan Community) delivers independent living and an amenity-rich lifestyle with access to onsite, higher-level care should a resident’s medical needs progress. The levels of care usually include independent, assisted, memory care, and skilled nursing as well as rehabilitation therapy on the campus. This continuum of care ensures residents that they have the comfort of remaining in the place they call home and the peace of mind that comes from knowing their future care is figured out.

“We wanted a CCRC so our two children who live in the area wouldn’t be burdened with our future healthcare,” Sue continues. “But for now, we are healthy and wanted lots of great amenities.” The Rinkers, who live at Blakehurst in Towson, say that it’s like living at a five-star resort.

Robin Somers, CEO of Broadmead, a Life Plan Community in Cockeysville, says, “Today we are seeing many of our residents coming in younger. Rather than in their 80s, they come in their 70s.”

Elizabeth O’Conner, director of marketing and sales at Blakehurst, adds that not only are residents younger, “they are very active.”

Without the drudgery of home maintenance, doing daily chores like cleaning and meal planning, and even trying to get the COVID-19 vaccine booster, there’s time for residents to be physically active and explore myriad intellectual and cultural opportunities. But for those who prefer to spend time alone or with a few friends, there’s that too.

A fitness center ranks high on must-have lists for incoming residents. In many CCRCs, residents will find state-of-the-art equipment, classes including yoga, tai chi, and aerobics, and a heated pool. Sometimes there’s even a juice bar and a spa for manicures, pedicures, and massages. Parker Williamson, 81, is an avid sailor who lives at BayWoods of Annapolis, a waterfront community. He says, “I exercise every other day, but don’t like group classes, so the personal trainer worked up a routine just for me.”

“Today’s residents want individualization,” remarks Somers.

Sharon Krulak, 79, is a new resident at Blakehurst. She’s also an artist who works in mixed-media. When the Krulaks were looking at Blakehurst, she told O’Connor, “I need a room to do my art. And they made it happen.”

At Broadmead, two residents who were trained and experienced beekeepers had a conversation with the Broadmead executive director, and the Broadmead Apiary was established in 2013. Today, there is a group of six residents who are involved. Throughout the year they inspect the beehives, feed the bees sugar syrup, and harvest the honey into jars for sale.

Usually, CCRCs have councils, committees, and their own governing body where residents can make things happen. “At Blakehurst we have 43 residential-run committees,” says Sue Rinker. “Thom is on the residents’ board and I’m on the refurbishing and jigsaw committees.”

CCRCs have concerts, guest speakers, and some arrange continuing education through Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes (university-based education specifically for people 50 and older) or nearby universities. At Broadmead, they recognize artists within their community and in the greater Baltimore vicinity by having exhibits, programs, and educational outreach. This April, the Broadmead Art Council will host an exhibit of the works of Herman Maril, a Baltimore native known for painting seascapes, interiors, and landscapes. These exhibits and lectures will be open to the greater community.

Other amenities usually include endless clubs, beautiful walking trails, gardens where residents can plant vegetables and flowers, a movie theater, a library, woodworking, a beauty salon and barber shop, card and poker rooms, billiards, bocce, and a resident computer and business center. Some communities have a croquet court, a putting green, and pickleball. As most CCRCs welcome your four-legged family members, there are even dog parks. And in keeping with making life effortless, some places will deliver your incoming packages right to your door. The list of concierge services goes on, including scheduled transportation to grocery stores, shops and more. At Edenwald, a CCRC in Towson, a bus transports residents to cultural events and attractions like the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra at the Meyerhoff, a string quartet at Shriver Hall, and plays.

Cuisine plays an important part in daily life. The number of dining venues depends on the CCRC and so do the plans they offer. Many have a grill, café, bar, and outdoor dining. CCRCs pride themselves on having an excellent chef, offering plenty of choices on the menu, high quality ingredients, and dining experiences resembling a great restaurant.

In this area, all CCRCs are close to vibrant cities—Annapolis, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. As Parker Williamson, resident at BayWoods, says with a laugh, “What’s great is we can visit Baltimore and D.C. and take advantage of all they have to offer, but we don’t have to live there.”

While most pets stay at home when their owners go to work, there are a few who join them for the daily grind. Cats and dogs alike can be found in stores across Baltimore and the businesses are happy to share their stories.

“We are so fortunate our customers have embraced the cats in our locations and they have become local celebrities in their own right,” said Courtney Belew, marketing manager for Ace Hardware. “Customers often stop by just to say hello, and it’s been a wonderful way for us to connect with our communities and add a little extra personality to our stores.”

Whether you are a cat person or a dog lover, there are stores, breweries, and even a print shop where you can find a new furry friend hard at work.

“Since we work long hours, it’s comforting to know Archie’s needs are being met,” said Rennie Friedlander, referring to her golden retriever who spends his days at the Simply Beautiful Flower Shop. “He’s very social and is seldom left alone. He enjoys seeing everyone and is always ready to go to work.”

FLUFFY FOODIES

Nepenthe Brewing Co.

Who wouldn’t love having their best friend come to work with them every day? That is what Brian Arnold and Jill Antos, owners of the brewery, thought when they started bringing their lab, Benny, into their homebrew shop six years ago. He is a valued part of their team often meeting customers for a belly rub—or two. Benny is a rescue pooch, and had some separation anxiety when they first adopted him.

“When we opened the shop he immediately let us know that he didn’t appreciate being left at home while we went off to work,” said Antos. “So we brought him with us one day after opening, and it was great. He loved it, we loved it, and our customers fell in love with him. The rest is history.”

The Avenue in Hampden
While Killer the cat is not attached to a storefront, he is a local celebrity on The Avenue. If you eat outdoors in the area, especially at Nori, Killer is likely to come and ask for some sushi or maybe just a scratch behind the ears. With some of his Instagram photos garnering around 1,000 likes, the Unofficial Mayor of Baltimore City/Hampden is famous in his own right.

Gypsy’s Truckstaurant
Gypsy’s Truckstaurant offers a home away from home for all neighbors and visitors, including a gray, long-haired cat known on their Instagram account as “his Highness.” He is pictured lounging in the sun and under tables, making any cat lover feel at home. You know you are in the presence of royalty when you see the feline with one white back foot.

Monument City
A local celebrity, Willow the cat is known for keeping Monument City Brewing Company’s free of mice. In a recent mishap, Will was “rescued” from the brewery by some good samaritans who quickly returned him when they realized he already had a loving home. They even threw a party for Will on his safe return home. You can visit the gray feline at the brewery, just make sure not to take him home when you leave. There’s even a hoppy saison named in his honor.

SNUGGLY SALESMEN

Greedy Reads
If you are itching for a new book or just a pooch to pet, Greedy Reads is the store for you. Audie, a black pup with just a few white hairs around her snout, greets customers and can often be found posing for pictures on the front stoop. As the star of the store’s Instagram account, Audie has stolen hearts and shown just how fun reading can be.

aMuse Toys
The toys are not the only thing that amuses patrons at this family-friendly store. If you stop by, owners Claudia and Tom Towles are sure to introduce you to at least one of their three pups. Customers like to get to know Olive, Lucy, and Lola and that also allows them to get to know the family better as well, according to Tom. All three dogs are a mix called “bugg”—half Boston terrier and half pug. “Puppy therapy. When around pups you can’t help from smiling and feeling loved,” said Tom. “That energy translates to folks walking in; it is just infectious.”

Ace Hardware
It is common to find a cat or two as store mascots in Ace Hardware. This company is a co-op that means each location is an independently owned and operated local business, so it’s up to each retailer to decide if a cat is the right fit. Ace likes to consider their store cats “four-legged associates” and they have a very important job to perform: entertaining customers, mild insect and pest control, and being door greeters. In Waverly, you can meet an orange tabby named Benjamin (after Benjamin Moore). Stanley (after Stanley, Black and Decker) is the chunky orange cat found in Canton, and Decker (also after SBD) is a gray and white cat with bright green eyes who will greet you in Fed Hill.

A local rescue group Animal Allies Rescue Foundation (AARF) approached Ace about adopting a cat for their stores. All three of their cats were AARF rescues, and they even host regular fundraisers and pet adoption pop-ups for the organization.

“As a 100-percent volunteer run rescue, we know every penny counts and goes toward placing local animals in a good home,” said Belew. “We’re so glad we are able to be one of their sponsors and look forward to growing our partnership with AARF in the years to come.”

ARTISTIC ANIMALS

Simply Beautiful Flower Shop
Nothing is more picturesque than dogs and flowers. Archie, a golden retriever, is the only example of picture perfect you need. The owners Brian and Rennie Friedlander never questioned bringing their pup to the shop—he goes everywhere they go. One dad brings his kids every Friday to see the golden dog; his kids even call it the Archie store. During the holidays, many people bring gifts for Archie and, when he is not at the store, he loves to go on deliveries with his dad.

“We all love him and he brings out the best in us. Everyone plays a part in caring for him,” said Rennie. “He’s always available for a snuggle and it’s always nice to take a quick minute to take him outside.”

Baltimore Print Studio
Kyle Van Horn and Kim Bentley are a husband-and-wife team who own and run Baltimore Print Studios with the help of their black pooch, Eleanor. Featured throughout their Instagram page, Eleanor helps them attract a crowd at events like Artscape. During normal weeks, Eleanor can be found lying around the shop or even on tables sometimes.

Golden retrievers aren’t the only pups who like to stop and smell the roses. Emma and Fergus are two corgis that help run the Marlow, McCrystle & Jones Florist shop. You can find photos of the working dogs on the company’s Facebook page. These dogs are even pictured on the sign outside the shop, proving to be the face of the store.

Christie Griffiths starts her day by checking her phone. And then she checks it again. While her behavior might not sound that different from any other millennial, she is actually working—obsessively monitoring the social media accounts associated with her store, Brightside Boutique. 

“I’m on my phone constantly; it just never ends,” says Griffiths, who opened her store in 2011. “I’m always apologizing to everyone I know, but if you want to have a successful business you have to do it.” 

In the world of retail, gone are the days of just sitting behind a cash register and throwing together a window display. Owning and operating a store now demands that you are in constant contact with your customers, which means meeting them exactly where they are physically and digitally. Griffiths—who opened her third Brightside in Hampden in March—has mastered the delicate balance of reaching a wide swath of customers while also keeping her service very personalized. 

“It’s important to know your customer,” Griffiths says. “I know it sounds weird but I know how my shopper talks, I know how she thinks, I know where she is going this weekend, and so does my staff.” 

Griffiths’ strategy? She treats Brightside more like a pop-up shop than a brick-and-mortar store. On top of her permanent locations in Federal Hill, Fells Point, and Hampden, she has Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat accounts, a website, a strong presence at local events such as festivals and outdoor markets, and ongoing collaborations with local style bloggers. Recently, she launched her own private label brand. Having three retail stores in the Baltimore area is basically unheard of, but Brightside’s formula is clearly working. 

“I think the change in retail is affecting everyone,” explains Griffiths. “You really have to be connected.” Her suggestions for budding boutique owners? “Look at stores and brands that you idolize. Look at their social media and web presences. Take notes to get inspired and do it your own way.” 

The needs of the modern consumer have become more complicated over time. People want to know more about the products they are buying, they want to know who made it and how, but most of all they want to feel good about their purchases. Consumers today are exposed to so much noise that it takes a multitude of methods to make a shopping experience seem meaningful. This idea—of keeping inventory fresh, the experience interactive, and the marketing message targeted—was pioneered by pop-up shops and is now being applied to brick-and-mortar stores. Though pop-up shops are certainly not a new concept, the model can serve as a good trial run for future stores.

“With a pop-up shop, you have low investment,” says Holly Lentz-Schiller, assistant professor in the fashion merchandising department at Stevenson University. “You can be very nimble and very quick to move and make changes to your business. There is not the overhead and the commitments so you are able to go where your consumers physically are.”

Having a temporary place to sell your goods—whether it is a one-time, monthly, or bi-monthly event—feels safer to those just starting their businesses, giving them a chance to test out ideas while beginning to understand the target market. 

Vanessa Milio started Taken, a pop-up shop exclusively featuring Maryland-based items, in 2015 because she loved the concept and wanted to showcase items people may have never found on their own. “I just really felt strongly about the idea of bringing the product to the people,” says Milio. “I love the idea of the mobility—even if I am representing the same 35 artists, we are in 14 different locations.” Milio has set up her shop everywhere from a brewery in Laurel, to a coffeehouse in Hamilton, to the nonprofit Second Chance. “It is always a different atmosphere and presentation,” she explains. 

Amy Fresty and Ellen Lunay, the founders of Here. a pop-up shop, took a Social Media 101 class when they first started out in 2013. “E-commerce and social media play a large part in our business,” says Lunay. “I have seen a number of shops, both small and large, close in part because they weren’t consistent on social media.” Fresty and Lunay take a very personal approach to Here.’s social media accounts, posting so many pictures and videos from their own lives that they’re often recognized as the “Here. girls” around town. The pair, who host their pop-up in Annapolis monthly, also sell a select amount of their own private label items that they make in conjunction with vendors and artists. They have also hosted seasonal online pop-up shops, which are time sensitive sales to create demand on their website. 

Laura Layton, owner of mobile boutique Tin Lizzy, agrees that a store’s social media presence must work in conjunction with its “real world” existence. “I think it is super important to be online and have that presence,” says Layton. “The business model is so fleeting—at one place one day and somewhere totally different the next. I see so many sales in my online shop the day after a big event. And I know exactly who the customer is! I can remember that woman looking at a necklace she left without and then see her place the order the next day.” 

Of course, pop-up shops are inherently flexible, able to react in real time to their customers’ tastes and needs. But lately, brick-and-mortar retailers seem to be catching on, applying pop-up techniques to their marketing. “The real trend in retail is omni-channel retailing,” explains Lentz-Schiller. “Bringing all of the pieces of retailing together—the e-commerce, the brick and mortar, catalogs, social media—to put out a consistent message.”

Because the daily media consumption of the average consumer has increased, retailers need to be social media experts, finding potential customers on places such as Instagram, Pinterest, and crafty e-commerce site Etsy. The ultimate goal is to create the kinds of relationships in which clients feel so comfortable online that they want to visit the store in person. “I don’t see brick and mortar ever being completely gone,” says Lentz-Schiller. “But they will need to reimagine what they are used to and be willing to change and evolve in order to survive.” 

Brightside has found inspiration in national companies—Free People, for example—that are also doing things to keep their brand relevant to their consumers. Not only does Free People have an official Instagram account filled with dreamy, ethereal photos that totally encapsulate the brand’s overall feel, they have local Instagram accounts in different parts of the country. They use these accounts to speak to their consumers directly in their areas, with pictures of weather appropriate merchandise and posts about news and events in their town. 

“Something I’ve really tried to do with Brightside is to be very [Baltimore] branded,” Griffiths says. “If you visit the page of a Free People store in Texas it’s full of desert and cacti, but if you look at California it’s all beaches and palm trees. They are so intentional with whom they are targeting.” 

Another way retailers are promoting their brands is through collaboration. For instance, Brightside teams up with local bloggers and people who have prolific social media followings, helping to expand the brand’s reach and have it associated with these trusted tastemakers. Other forms of collaboration are found through markets and craft fairs and even in other stores throughout the city. 

And for those pop-up retailers who want the stability of a permanent store but can’t afford it? Collaboration is once again key. Erica Bentley of Keepers Vintage in Mt. Vernon moved her store into a space shared with maker Letta Moore of Knits, Soy, & Metal last fall. “It’s very cliche, but there is strength in numbers,” Bentley says. “The idea of sharing a similar work ethic, expanding your customer base, and having someone to bounce ideas off of is helpful.” 

The two businesses officially converged into a brick and mortar shop on Read Street last November after many years of doing pop-ups. “The limited amount of time you are given for pop-up shops can be a disadvantage,” explains Moore. “Once that opportunity is gone, there isn’t a physical place for customers to get your products unless you have an online presence. Being in a brick and mortar, anyone can walk by at any time and come in to make a purchase.” 

Both brands have tailored their business models to include in-store events and workshops to make shopping with them more of an experience. Says Bentley, “We both did a lot of popping up in the past, but the difference for me is really comparable to going on vacation. The fun, excitement, and headache of traveling versus actually getting home. This space is like being home.”

When did you open your first store? Has the message remained the same?

I first opened the original Joshua
Tree clothing store in 2000, which was opened in Towson, MD until 2006. My
second store was in Portland, Oregon from 2007 to 2010. Yes, the message
has remained the same with the focus on eco-friendly clothing and new
technologies to better improve on the overall process from production and
material organic fibers.

Explain eco-friendly and fair trade.

Eco-friendly ultimately means how
a garment is being produced and under what conditions that garment is
being produced. Also, utilizing the least amount of harsh chemicals such as
pesticides and herbicides. Whether fair trade in Peru, sweatshop free in areas
of the planet like China, or supporting made in USA clothing whether in
Los Angeles, Virginia, and or the supporting of local companies, which produce
garments made in Baltimore.

Fair trade is about supporting and
preserving fair trade wages and artisan cooperatives, investing in natural and
organic fibers and environmentally friendly dyes, and spreading the beauty of
handmade, eco fashion for a start. Fair trade is really about being held
accountable to make choices that honor both people and the planet and
respecting culture and traditions of artisans from around the world with fair
trade practices.

What inspired you?

Back
in 1999, I was selling and sharing a line of hemp/organic cotton clothing out
of my car for a year. No one wanted to carry the line, but some of the
[local store] owners and employees wanted to buy the clothing for themselves,
which was very cool, but a little frustrating because no one wanted it for
their shops. The only way to go was to open a store of my own.

Describe who shops at your store.

Some
people come into the shop who are all about the ecological aspect of it
all, and the style is secondary. Some customers come into the shop
who are all about the style and fashion of the designs.

Has Baltimore been receptive?

Yes.
[There’s] a growing community in Baltimore who is looking for alternative
opportunities to enjoy clothing designed without the
traditional sweatshop, harsh chemical label attached to it.

What local lines do you carry?

3Clothing, which is produced in
Hampden. I also carry locally made jewelry from By the Hill designs, aromatherapy
products from AromaChi, Richard Crafton products, and Becca and Mars.

What changes do you hope to make
for the store in the future?

I
just really want to build the shop to its ultimate and optimal
experience meaning, stocked with clothing and accessory lines in
full. Sort of like an eco-clothing and accessory depot for the Baltimore
and overall Maryland community at large.
