If Black Friday and Cyber Monday haven’t already wiped out your holiday shopping budget, Treasure House Accessories, which officially closes its doors at the end of this month, might do you in with a sale that includes 20 to 70 percent off all merchandise including favorite brands such as Longchamp, Rebecca Minkoff, Pandora, and Alex & Ani.

Though the store has been an Owings Mills stalwart for the past 10 years, mother/daughter co-owners Rhona Rosengarden and Jodi Brodie recently announced they were closing their successful shop to have more time to enjoy family.

“It isn’t as much of a business choice as it is a personal choice,” Brodie says. “While we love every minute of the store and don’t want to see it end, working six days a week is definitely a time commitment.”

Rosengarden began her work in the jewelry business 35 years ago, stringing beads and necklaces for smaller kiosks before opening her first freestanding store in Pikesville. After 20 years, Brodie suggested that her mom either renovate the store or move to a new location. With Rosengarden’s retail experience and Brodie’s previous work as a handbag buyer for Sak’s Fifth Avenue, the two decided to merge their talents to create Treasure House.

Since opening in 2004, Treasure House has become a household name in the Baltimore fashion market. With upscale products ranging from chic handbags and scarves to of-the-moment jewelry, it has had a huge following, and ever since the announcement, store foot traffic has skyrocketed.

“It’s really neat because people know they can’t get this merchandise anywhere else in Baltimore, but the reality is they’re looking to buy a piece of the store,” Brodie says. “They’re sad to see it go for so many reasons, but mainly they love the vibe and they also love what they get.”

Brodie is excited to be able to commit more time to her family, but will definitely miss the customers and working with her loyal staff.

“I always tell my kids, ‘People always come back in your life in different ways later on, so always establish a good relationship with them the first time,’” she says.

And as far as another retail shop down the line goes, Brodie can’t make any predictions.

“We want to make closure here, and right now we’re putting all of our energies into the store,” she says. “As far as our next venture, we’ll get there when we get there.”

With the holidays fast approaching, your calendar is likely filling up with invitations, all containing those coded party terms: “cocktail,” “semi-formal,” and “dressy casual.”

But what does it all mean? We asked some experts.

If it’s a formal charity gala, notes Lisa Schatz, owner of Fells Point’s Cupcake Boutique, “long dresses can be in order.” However, Karen Ciurca-Weiner, manager of Cross Keys’ Jones and Jones, says short dresses are also acceptable, “if dressy enough.” She suggests “beads, sequins, shimmer fabrics, and lace, chiffon, or mesh overlays.”

If the event is “semi-formal”, our experts advise against long dresses. Instead, try “a cocktail dress, perhaps without beading, but still in a dressy fabric, such as lace, satin, or silk,” Ciurca-Weiner says.

And what about the dreaded “dressy casual?” “For a casual house party, or event at a bar, you can do a simple knit or sweater dress, or pair a beaded or silk top with a nice pair of dark jeans and a heel,” Schatz says.

For a different look, Schatz suggests something non-traditional. “One of my favorites for holiday this year is a jumpsuit. It’s a fashionable update, and they tend to be very flattering,” she explains.

For the finishing touches, Jodi Brodie, co-owner of Owings Mills’ Treasure House Accessories, advises revelers stick to “one or two pieces of good-looking jewelry, focusing on the individual pieces, and not on the amount of pieces.”

Also, don’t forget a dressier bag or clutch. “Anything that has a little bit of sparkle, or a little bit of life to it,” she says.

Within months of launching their jewelry-making business, Baltimore
born-and-raised sisters Jill Becker, left, and Jenny Benscher, right,
have already expanded it across the country.

Lema J Design is a
line of bracelets (mostly cuffs)—sold locally in stores like Treasure
House Accessories, Alice Jane, and Ruth Shaw, and stores in California,
New York, and Florida—made from shagreen leather (aka stingray skin).

“I
love the texture, pattern, and inherent beauty,” says Benscher, who
handcrafts the jewelry in her Orlando, FL, home studio, of the unique
material. Lema J Design is unique in its story, too. Becker (who splits
time between Baltimore and Florida) lost her daughter, Cara, to leukemia
in 2012.

Shortly after, Benscher made her sister an orange cuff
emblazoned with a protective eye. “I wanted her to know and feel that I
was always with her,” Benscher says.

After many people
complimented Becker’s one-of-a-kind bracelet, the two partnered as
vendors at a fundraiser. Their stock sold out in three hours, prompting
them to start a business.

Since then, the collection has grown to
offer various styles priced from $88 to $660, with a portion of all
proceeds benefitting the Karma for Cara Foundation, founded by Cara
shortly before her death. Each bracelet is marked with a signature red
dot.

“It represents the holes in our lives that we fill with love, empowerment, motion, and adventure,” Becker says.
