Over the last six years, the most unlikely of venues—the Dover International Speedway and its surrounding woods—has evolved into one of the East Coast’s most popular music festivals, with music lovers from near and far flocking to the Delaware state capital to see their favorite bands at the Firefly Music Festival.

Launched in the summer of 2012, Firefly now draws thousands of attendees and big-name acts such as last year’s The Killers, SZA, and Kendrick Lamar. And next summer, when the festival returns for its seventh year on June 21-23, the three-day affair will feature an equally impressive lineup.

Just announced, headliners will include pop-punk band Panic At The Disco!, indie darlings Death Cab For Cutie and Vampire Weekend, electronic producers Zedd and Kygo, and rappers Travis Scott, Post Malone, and Tyler the Creator. Also on the bill are ’90s R&B legends TLC and D.C.’s own Jukebox the Ghost.

Most notably, though, are the lineup’s three Baltimore acts: rising indie rock star Snail Mail, hip-hop provocateur JPEGMAFIA, and up-and-coming rapper Rakeem Miles. All three artists are set to perform during the Saturday set.

Before making her name in Nashville, Harford County native Liz Cooper discovered her musical talents in Maryland. While attending Towson University on a full-ride golf scholarship, she performed open mics around the state before packing her bags in 2012 to pursue a music career in Tennessee. There, she found her bandmates Grant Prettyman, on bass, and Ryan Usher, on drums, and before long formed their psychedelic folk-rock trio, The Stampede.

Over the past year, the band’s sound—featuring earthy vocals, vintage-tinged melodies, and electric jam-ready rhythms—has garnered the trio some serious national acclaim, with their percussive backwoods single, “Mountain Man,” winning a runner-up spot in NPR’s Tiny Desk contest and being named one of Rolling Stone’s top country/Americana songs of the spring.

The band is currently on tour with indie-folk darlings Houndmouth and their debut album, Window Flowers, drops August 10, but over the weekend, we caught up with the trio after their sets at the Firefly Music Festival in Dover, Delaware, to talk about Maryland, Beach House, and the one and only Wawa.

How did you guys meet?

Liz: I grew up in Bel Air and went to school at Towson University for about a year before moving to Nashville in 2012. I moved down there to really go out on a limb and pursue this whole music thing. I thought, ‘Oh, I’ll give it a shot for a year,’ but you quickly realize that’s pretty impossible unless you’re Taylor Swift. For me, it took longer, but I started playing and writing constantly and made mutual friends with these guys. Grant and I were working together at a country club and then eventually I met Ryan.

Ryan: And stole me from other bands.

Grant: We stole him from one of my favorite bands, The Wild Jays.

Ryan: But I was always a Liz Cooper fan.

We often think of the Nashville music scene as a thousand struggling country artists, all trying to make it big. But I’ve also heard there’s a cool underground indie community as well.

Liz: That’s right. There are a lot of amazing musicians that come out of Nashville, and the stuff they’re doing is not necessarily country. It’s very communal. Everyone there is learning from each other and supporting each other and really lighting a fire under the ass of every other songwriter. You look at what everybody else is doing and you think, ‘Man, that’s really cool.’

Grant: Nashville’s indie scene is growing, and there’s more to come—way beyond what even we are doing. We have so many friends who are doing really cool things and are going to blow up before we know it. We can’t wait to see that happen and to see the city gain a new identity of its own.

How did growing up in Maryland influence you as a musician?

Liz: Baltimore is home to a bunch of really great outdoor festivals, like Hot August Blues and Artscape. It was just a huge introduction for me . . . The sense of community always inspired me, and I met so many different types of people. Seeing how one band or person on stage could bring people together and make them feel a certain way captivated me.

I’ve also always been attracted to the outdoors, and hiking and camping was a big part of my youth . . . I grew up really close to water, in the woods, in the middle of nowhere. I was outside all the time . . . You have a lot of time to think in all that silence out there. I came up with a lot of songs and ideas being out in the woods and was inspired by how small you feel out in something so massive.

Did you consider yourself a part of the Baltimore music scene at the time?

Liz: I didn’t really integrate myself into the Baltimore music scene because I was busy at Towson and really trying to figure out my songwriting process and what I was going to do with all of it. I did a lot of open mics in the Frederick area, going out as much as I could to play my songs to anybody who would listen. I did a warehouse thing in Baltimore once, too—just this crazy little art crawl, really cool, very DIY. Since then, we’ve played a house show or two and few times at Metro Gallery and now Rams Head Live. But it all really started in Nashville.

Grant: We definitely have influences that sit in Baltimore. We listen to Beach House a lot. The fact that they came out of Baltimore and are still there and are doing as well as they have is really inspiring. And in their own way, they’re helping and giving back to their city.

Liz: I didn’t realize they were from Baltimore until a few years ago, so now I like them even more . . . I love the tone of Victoria [LeGrand]’s voice and her dark and mysterious melodies. The keyboard sounds were really fresh to me when I first discovered the band. We listen to them a lot in the van.

How do Baltimore crowds compare to those in other cities you’ve played?

Liz: Baltimore has a lot of hungry music fans. People really love going to shows and finding artists they connect with. The nightlife in Baltimore is pretty poppin’ and it seems like all those hard-working people like to let loose and see some great music. A lot of my friends that I grew up with live downtown, so it’s been cool to reconnect with them when we pass through the city. They are super supportive music lovers.

Are there any places you like to visit when you go home?

Grant: The mall? The snowball stand?

Liz: When I’m home, I’m usually pretty chill, but if I go out, I’ll go to a little Irish pub, Sean Bolan’s, in Bel Air . . . But I also really like Wawa?

Wawa!

Grant: Yes! We were just saying we’re officially in Wawaland now, and Hoagie Fest is happening so…

Your debut album, Window Flowers, drops on August 10 via your own record label, Sleepyhead Records. Tell me about that.

Liz: Grant and I had been talking for a long time about wanting to do as much on our own and about keeping it as small and in the family for as long as we possibly could. And we had all of the pieces ready that would go into finishing a record and finding a record label. We had everything we needed.

Grant: It’s always been a dream of ours. We’re so lucky to have a lot of the people who have been with us since early on, but our last piece of the puzzle was, ‘Are we going to sign with a label or try to do it ourselves?’ There’s a music company in Nashville called Thirty Tigers that was really supportive of the DIY thing and they were nice enough to help us distribute the record while letting us do so through our own label. We’re getting the best of both worlds and hopefully we can turn it into something. It’s so nice to have people believe in what you’re doing.

Liz: This record is similar to what we play live but you’ll also hear a bunch of different sounds. We have a number of friends who came in and played their different instruments and filled out the sound. It’s really how I’ve always imagined our songs sounding, and I can’t wait for people to finally hear it.

We can think of no better food to carry around a festival than a steamed bun stuffed with curry fried chicken, spicy slaw, and flavor-packed sauces. This weekend at Firefly Music Festival, our very own Asian fusion spot Ekiben will give music lovers just that.

Ekiben is delivering a bite of Baltimore to the Delaware festival, as they head the food lineup for the first time. After serving at big events like Artscape and Moonrise, this might be their biggest break.

Since its start in 2014, the Fells Point joint has been serving up specialty buns and bowls unique to the area. At Firefly, their stand will be all their signature sandwiches, so that festival go-ers will get to taste their most popular items.

“It’s a great honor, and we’re super happy that we’re able to put Baltimore in a more positive spotlight,” co-founder Steve Chu said. “We’re all about loving Baltimore.”

Catering is well inside Ekiben’s comfort zone. Customers will be able to get fan favorites including the Neighborhood Bird, iced Vietnamese coffee, and Tofu Brah (for the vegetarians!).

With just one location in Baltimore, the company expands its brand through its food trucks and catering business. When they started out, their low funds had them serving out of a hot dog cart, Chu said, and then they had a spot at the Fells Point Farmers’ Market before opening a brick and mortar location.

“The city really supported us in our endeavor,” he said. “We have so much gratitude, we don’t take it for granted.”

And just like that, four years later, Ekiben was “hit up” by Firefly, according to Chu.

“One day I woke up, I looked at my phone, and they had tagged us in a post,” he said. “And I was like, ‘Wow, we’re headlining this?’”

Their food stands will be alongside some other “really great talent,” Chu said. Beloved burger chain Shake Shack and Eminem’s pop-up Mom’s Spaghetti are up top with Ekiben, as must-have meals.

Partnering with Chu are managers and chefs Ephrem Abebe and Nikhil Yesupriya, making a young, fun trio of co-owners. It’s easy to tell the guys are doing what they love, with so much enthusiasm. Across their various social media accounts, they stick to caps-locked messages, like they’re shouting out everything out with joy.

“YO EKIBEN IS HEADLINING FIREFLY FESTIVAL ALONGSIDE KENDRICK LAMAR, EMINEM, AND THE ARCTIC MONKEYS,” they wrote on Instagram. And their post was met with similarly excited comments.

For the early eaters, Chu is giving out a limited amount of Ekiben-branded EDM masks to wear around the festival. They will be located in the food tent cluster a stone’s throw away from the main stage.

Wherever they land, they’ll be the place to be for snack breaks in between bands. And remember them when you get back to Baltimore, because they will be around no matter what.

“We never asked for any of this,” Chu said happily. “We just make sandwiches.”

[Update, February 25: A press release was just sent out confirming that, indeed, Paul McCartney, is headlining the festival. The singer will be performing as a part of his Out There tour, which features songs spanning his entire career—as a solo artist, member of Wings and of course as a Beatle.]

Last month, a leaked Firefly Music Festival lineup made the rounds on music websites. And, so far, it looks like that leak was pretty accurate.

The official lineup for the festival—a mere two-hour drive from Baltimore—was released this afternoon and, as predicted, Kings of Leon and The Killers were announced as two of the headliners, with a third to “be revealed at a later date.”

That mysterious third headliner, according to the leaks and rumors, is Paul McCartney, but Firefly is not ready to confirm that yet.

Other acts taking the stage at Dover International Speedway from June 18-22 include Morrissey, Bastille, Snoop Dogg, Foster the People, Modest Mouse, Hozier, Kid Cudi, Zedd, and Gary Clark Jr.

This will be full circle for The Killers, who played the inaugural Firefly Festival in 2012 with Jack White and the Black Keys. Since then, the event has grown exponentially with 30,000 attendees that first year to 80,000 last summer.

Additionally, this year, 15 hour of live sets from the festival will be broadcast on AXS TV for the first time.

Firefly’s director Greg Bostrom says, “we’re bringing our best lineup to date” and that a ticket-sale date will be announced soon.

This past weekend, I attended the second annual Firefly Music Festival in Dover, DE—just a two-hour drive from Baltimore. One of the nicest things about the festival was its close proximity, and avoiding a plane ride or 12-hour road trip to get there.

The festival itself was extremely well organized. Signage and parking were easy to find. Additionally, ticket holders were allowed to bring in any empty water bottle or thermos and, once inside, could fill them up at free, filtered water stations. It was such a nice alternative to buying $4 Dasani waters all day to keep hydrated.

On the other side of the coin, there was a lovely, shaded DogFish Head brewery if attendees wanted to beat the heat and grab a brew (we loved the seasonal Festina Peche). Besides the brewery, there were several areas to rest in between acts, including a hammock hangout, a vineyard, and a coffeehouse. Anyone who’s gone to a multi-day festival can appreciate these shaded, quieter areas. Another nice touch was a farmers’ market for campers to buy fresh produce.

But onto the important part: the music. I enjoyed pretty much every act I saw, but there were obviously some standouts. Saturday kicked off with Vancouver duo Japandroids, whose noisy garage rock certainly woke up any bleary-eyed campers. The band had actually played The Ottobar the night before and concluded their U.S. tour at Firefly. While I had seen them a few times before, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, pictured, were pretty amazing. Though lead singer Karen O’s voice is ethereal, her performance was anything but—as she swung the mic, jumped on amps, and generally proved to be a powerhouse.

My favorite performance was probably the Alabama Shakes. This southern rock four piece is led masterfully by Brittany Howard, whose bluesy guitar and vocals mesmerized the entire crowd. Of course, there was Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, who closed down Saturday night. Petty, who seemed much younger than his 62 years, stuck to the classics for the young festival go-ers. The super moon during his set was an added bonus. “You know we’ve got this crazy moon up there,” Petty told the crowd. “That’s got to be good for music.”

It’s abundantly clear after this weekend that the fast-growing Firefly Festival is good for music, as well.
