With the holidays fast approaching, your calendar is likely filling up with invitations, all containing those coded party terms: “cocktail,” “semi-formal,” and “dressy casual.”

But what does it all mean? We asked some experts.

If it’s a formal charity gala, notes Lisa Schatz, owner of Fells Point’s Cupcake Boutique, “long dresses can be in order.” However, Karen Ciurca-Weiner, manager of Cross Keys’ Jones and Jones, says short dresses are also acceptable, “if dressy enough.” She suggests “beads, sequins, shimmer fabrics, and lace, chiffon, or mesh overlays.”

If the event is “semi-formal”, our experts advise against long dresses. Instead, try “a cocktail dress, perhaps without beading, but still in a dressy fabric, such as lace, satin, or silk,” Ciurca-Weiner says.

And what about the dreaded “dressy casual?” “For a casual house party, or event at a bar, you can do a simple knit or sweater dress, or pair a beaded or silk top with a nice pair of dark jeans and a heel,” Schatz says.

For a different look, Schatz suggests something non-traditional. “One of my favorites for holiday this year is a jumpsuit. It’s a fashionable update, and they tend to be very flattering,” she explains.

For the finishing touches, Jodi Brodie, co-owner of Owings Mills’ Treasure House Accessories, advises revelers stick to “one or two pieces of good-looking jewelry, focusing on the individual pieces, and not on the amount of pieces.”

Also, don’t forget a dressier bag or clutch. “Anything that has a little bit of sparkle, or a little bit of life to it,” she says.

Here are some sales (and a few events) worth shopping now through next week.

Hurry over to Cross Keys for Ruth Shaw’s Designer Sale and save up to 70 percent off the store’s select designer items.

Next door, enjoy Jones and Jones’ three-day in-store Carol Peretz
trunk show. This New-York based line is known for its signature bridal
collection, as well as its cocktail-attire and other special occasion
pieces. Stop by the store from today through Friday, March 14.

It’s not too late to enjoy major savings at Green Spring Station. Now through this Friday, March 14, shop the end of Bare Necessities’
two-week long 29th Anniversary Sale which will afford you 20 percent
off all items storewide, and even more generous, 30 percent off all
sleepwear.

After debuting the fundraiser last September, the shopping center and the Junior League of Baltimore will team up yet again to host another Passport to Baltimore
shopping event. For just $20 (reduced from last year’s price!), your
shopping card will grant you access to the remaining days of the
original ten-day period of special savings at Green Spring’s
participating stores (ending Sunday, March 16), as well as to the full
ten-day period at participating restaurants (from Friday, May 16 until
Sunday, May 25). All proceeds benefit the Junior League of Baltimore’s
dedicated fight to helping local women, fighting child obesity and
improving the general welfare of the community.

Bare Necessities isn’t the only store celebrating an anniversary—Lingerie Lingerie
is turning 24! And to kick off the celebration, the store will offer a
25 percent storewide discount this Friday only, followed by a 20 percent
storewide discount throughout the rest of the week-long sale.

Over at the Shops at Kenilworth, the Bead has discounted all tops—saving you 20 percent on each—until Saturday, March 22.

After shopping, relax at About Faces. From now through Monday, March 31, purchase five of the same salon and spa services and save 15 percent on your total.

Finally, skip the Sunday blues and end your week at this year’s Emerging Awards & Fashion Show!

	As
the name suggests, EMERGE will be held in celebration of emerging power
players in the fashion world. Host Ava Marie (WBAL TV-11) will honor a
total of eleven publicly nominated candidates.

But first, sip and shop upon arriving at the Lord Baltimore Hotel before the award ceremony begins.
