TT The Artist

Queen of the Beat (self-released)

The Queen Bee of Baltimore party music has been blowing up, from her 2015 “Lavish” track being featured on HBO’s new series, Insecure, to her “F Trump” single with DJ Mighty Mark making it to the top of Spotify’s United States Viral 50 (beating out The Weeknd!). Now, after two strong releases and a handful of infectious hits, the 32-year-old MICA alum has dropped her aptly named debut. Across 22 tracks, she lays an addictive foundation of breakneck Bmore Club beats, heavy hip-hop bass, and hints of EDM and house, then slays with fierce lyrics ranging from witty, energetic spits to thoughtful ruminations. Simply put, TT is pure fire, and on this robust record, she establishes herself as an artist to notice on the national stage.

Raindeer

Neon Death (Good Behavior Records)

In the doldrums of January, we need a little hope that summer isn’t too far away. That’s where Raindeer comes in, as the local quartet aces the sunny nostalgia of indie-pop. If you listen closely, the lyrics are a layer cake of teenage angst, perplexing heartache, and self-discovery, but it’s the shimmering melodies and urgent beats of their psychedelic shoegaze that have you jonesing for the next solstice. Across 10 songs, this fourth album fills your ears with a wall of sound, studded with steady drums, stretched out with echoing vocals, and laden with fuzzy layers of aching surf guitar. It sends you into the luminous days of the future (not so distant, we swear!), when you’ll be windows-down road-tripping to the beach.

Sept. 17: Baltimore Seafood Festival

Canton Waterfront Park, 3001 Boston St. 12-7 p.m. Free-$99.

In case you
didn’t get your crustacean fix this summer, Baltimore’s seafood spectacular is
back along the waterfront. Dig into signature dishes from the city’s most renowned
seafood houses, like Captain James, Jimmy’s Seafood, Mama’s on the Half Shell,
Ryleigh’s Oyster, Nick’s Fish House, and the Local Oyster to name a few. Think
oysters—barbecued, grilled, or on the half shell—all crab everything, from
steamed to soft shell to sliders, and fish and shrimp. For an extra protein
punch, try turf temptations like Southern Provisions barbecue, Abbey Burger
buns, Snake Hill sausages, and Cosima Italian eats. From Voltaggio Restaurants,
Hersh’s Pizza, Gnocco, and Gunther & Co., local chefs will be offering
cooking demos, and food trucks will be in tow to boot. Once you’re fat and
happy, grab a beer, lay back on the lawn, and listen to live music by the likes
of the All Mighty Senators, and soak up that very end of summer sun.

We may not be
Napa or the Piedmont, but Maryland has a blossoming brood of vineyards turning
out increasingly delicious wine. In between the seasons of red and white, make
your way to Carroll County for a boozy day of vino, with more than 200 local
vintages, regional food, live music, and arts and crafts. At this 19th-century
farmhouse, breathe in the country air and drink down samples from wineries like
Boordy Vineyards, Deep Creek Cellars, Fiore Winery and Distillery, Linganore
Winecellars, and the Eastern Shore’s St. Michaels Winery, plus cider from Great
Shoals Winery and Monkton favorite Millstone Cellars. Best of all, there will
be a “Maryland Cheese Pavilion,” toting the funky goodness of five local cheese
mongers. If you’re looking for us, you know where we’ll be.

In Baltimore, we have a melting pot of music, from the city’s storied jazz and its renowned symphony to Americana bluegrass and a growing base of DIY. But in the corners of each genre, there are a number of improvisational, experimental musicians, and some of the very best in their class. For the 14th year, celebrate these musical misfits during the largest festival of its kind on the East Coast. Twenty-six musicians will come together to create new, off-the-cuff, cutting-edge collaborations and offer viewers a singular experience and window into this subculture. Famous musicians play beside burgeoning beginners and mix the likes of percussion, brass, and strings with the likes of voice, electronics, computers, and found objects. At the Baltimore Theatre Project, catch local computer artist Jeff Carey, Japanese saxophonist N.N.Y., Idaho flugenhorn player Ruby Fulton, or found objects artists Llew Niyomkarn of The Hauge.

As Hampden only
continues to evolve, make your way to the neighborhood this weekend to
celebrate what remains of its quirky, quintessentially Baltimore charm. Amidst
its colorful row homes, taste street eats from Café Hon, The Charmery, Dylan’s
Oyster Cellar, and Luigi’s Italian Deli, and swing by The Brewer’s Art stand to
wish them happy birthday with a special Hampdenfest beer. Browse goods
from local shops like Ma Petite Shoe, Trohv, doubledutch boutique, and Parisian
Flea, and then head to Chestnut Avenue to catch (or compete in) the iconic
toilet bowl races. Be sure to check out live music (and poetry readings and a
Dangerously Delicious pie-eating contest) across three different stages. With
16 bands in tow, give a listen as you wander 36th Street, with the likes of
indie-pop quartet Wildhoney, psychedelic synth-rockers Raindeer, post punksters PLRLS, and badass party starter TT The Artist.

Abdu Ali
Best of Abdu Ali Via Baltimore (Deathbomb Arc)

Meet the young prince of Baltimore Club—the breakbeat genre that blends hip-hop, house music, and choppy samples into a frenetic dance party. Blazed in the late ’80s, ’90s, and early aughts by the likes of Scottie B and 92Q’s K-Swift, it’s raw and energetic, and, today, its legacy continues with Ali at the forefront. The Baltimore native champions his hometown genre with fundamentals like strong spits and breakneck beats but pushes it forward with bold artistic vision, unbridled energy, and a dogged work ethic. Culled from his EPs and mixtapes, the new cassette moves between chaotic raps, dreamy chants, powerful declarations, and euphoric dance beats. None lack in urgency (or expletives—most are NSFW), and throughout, there’s an unrelenting edge and underground vibe, much like his popular Kahlon dance parties at The Crown. His newest tracks come at the end, and, in them, you hear a connection to his past but also a clear path to his future. “I, Exist” is a twinkling, cosmic trip and his most accessible yet, while “Keep Movin” is a minimalist monologue of motivational freestyle and free jazz. Both reveal Ali as more than just a party starter and seem to relay the same message: He isn’t stopping. He’s just getting started.

Raindeer
You Look Smashing (Friends Records)

This local indie quartet transports listeners to the West Coast and another era with its dreamy surf ballads that sound like a sepia homage to Southern California in the 1960s. At times, it’s a Beach Boys brand of hipster rock-and-roll; at others, it veers off into a synth-driven, psychedelic, Animal Collective-esque blast from outer space. Sometimes, both happen all at once, like in “This is Rock N’ Roll.” The track alternates between two distinct sounds: In one, the title is repeated as a singsong declaration backed by thundering drums, and in the other, the band switches gears to a pitter-patter pop beat with cooing vocals and twanging guitar over an infectious accordion loop. Combined with the lush, mellow melody of “I Dunno,” the shimmering, digital swirl of “Blasting,” and the churning, catchy beat of ” Slayer,” this four-song EP is the sort of sunny alt-pop made for an impromptu trip to the beach. Hear them for yourself at the Ottobar on April 2.

The Manly Deeds
The Manly Deeds (self-released)

Songs about coal miners, travelers, and thieves aren’t exactly what you’d expect from a group of city boys, but give The Manly Deeds a listen and you’ll think they’re a band of backcountry bucks. Their music reflects their Land of Pleasant Living home—from the hills of Appalachia to the tides of the Chesapeake—and pays homage to the region’s roots, with songs inspired by “lives we’ve lived, lives we haven’t, Old Crow Medicine Show, The Band, Bob Dylan, [and] jug bands.” Recorded in a Western Maryland barn, the self-titled album is an Americana mix of country, bluegrass, and folk that mingles a medley of instruments, from guitar, mandolin, upright bass, and banjo to harmonica, kazoo, bowed saw, and even a suitcase. Their songs range from plucky ditties and timeless ballads to thumping mountain hollers. They’re perfect for summertime, when you get out of the city and find yourself barreling down a back road, sitting around a bonfire, or hanging in the backyard with good friends and fireflies on a warm June night. Don’t miss them at the Charm City Folk & Bluegrass Festival on April 25.
