#12: Flacco Connects
With Ray Rice on Fourth and 29
November 25, 2012

How It Happened: If
the Ravens weren’t yet buried, they had one foot in the grave. With less than
two minutes left, they trailed the San Diego Chargers by three, and faced a
nearly impossible fourth down and 29 yards to go.

If you think fourth-and-29 sounds like a mile (it’s almost
a third of the entire field!), check out CBS’s replay of it.
From cameras near the top of Qualcomm Stadium it looks unfathomably far to the
naked eye.

But not to Ray Rice’s, thankfully.

After receiving the snap, quarterback Joe Flacco had plenty
of time to find a receiver downfield. Only none were open. So at the last
moment he flipped a little one-yard pass to little Ray Rice, who used every
ounce of his leverage, speed, and power to elude seemingly the entire Chargers
defense for a 30-yard gain.

The Ravens benefitted from a generous spot, and after a lengthy
official replay review, the first down call was upheld. Six plays later kicker
Justin Tucker knocked in the tying field goal, and he went on to win it in
overtime. The victory was an important one for Baltimore, which, of course, was
destined to take home its second Super Bowl title.

Just how miraculous was this play? According to ESPN Stats
& Info, at the time it was the longest fourth-down conversion since 2001,
when the Buffalo Bills converted a fourth-and-34 against the Indianapolis
Colts.

It’s just a shame that after the running back’s off-field behavior, this spectacular play is no longer the first thing Ravens fans think of when they hear Ray Rice’s name.

All season long, we’ll be counting down the Ravens top moments in
franchise history to celebrate the team’s 20th season in Baltimore. Take a look
back at what moments we’ve chronicled so far.

It’s not often Baltimore and San Diego get lumped together, but at least on the football field both cities share some remarkable commonalities. Both teams, for example, are 7-4, albeit with San Diego currently possessing an edge in the NFL’s playoff tie-breaker rules. Both teams are led by durable veteran quarterbacks with remarkably similar stats this year—Charger QB Philip Rivers has thrown for exactly two more yards and one more touchdown than Joe Flacco.

Defensively, both teams are strong as well, with San Diego ranked ahead of Baltimore, at 8th in the NFL in total offensive yardage allowed. Although, the Ravens (18.9) allow slightly fewer points per game than the Chargers (19.6).

So, here’s the key difference as the weather turns cold and the winter winds howl and the grind for the playoffs shakes out in late November and December: The Ravens rank 5th in run defense while San Diego comes in at 13. Offensively, the running numbers are more stark: The Ravens, led by Justin Forsett, rank 7th in the NFL in rushing offense while San Diego comes in at 27th.

Potentially, that translates into another big day from Justin Forsett (good interview here) this Sunday on the heels of his career-best, 182-yard rushing game in New Orleans on Monday night. A journeyman, third-string back coming into this season, Forsett has displayed tremendous patience and cut-back running instincts behind new offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak’s beloved zone-blocking scheme. In fact, Forsett’s averaging 5.8 yards per carry to date—far and away the top mark among leading NFL running backs—and is the main reason we think we are headed back to the playoffs and not San Diego.

Then again, Chargers fans can lay on the beach in January if their team doesn’t make the playoffs. So there’s that.

Chargers at Ravens, Sunday Nov. 30, 1:00 p.m., M&T Bank Stadium, CBS

Monday felt positively San Diegan here. The temperature topped 70, the sun shined brightly, and the Ravens did their part to preserve the beautiful day by beating the Saints in New Orleans. By Wednesday, the weather turned downright nasty, which hopefully will be the case when the Chargers come to town Sunday for a critical game between 7-4 teams. If you’ve never been to San Diego, imagine a place where it’s always sunny and you don’t need a thermometer that goes above 90 or under 50. Weather-wise, it’s paradise, which is why the Chargers often struggle in cold-weather locales late in the season. This year they’re 2-3 on the road.

What to Eat: California’s second-largest city (by population) is known for its fish tacos, which are as popular on bar and restaurant menus there as crab cakes are in Baltimore. Unfortunately for tacos de pescado lovers here (and crab cake aficionados there, for that matter), the dish seems to fizzle on the opposite coast. There are a few places around town that offer their take, including Captain Larry’s in Locust Point, Little Havana in Federal Hill, and Riptide by the Bay and Papi’s Tacos in Fells Point, all of which use mahi mahi. Holy Frijoles in Hampden favors beer battered cod. For my money, the best fish taco in Baltimore can be found at Tortilleria Sinaloa in Fells, which uses tilapia with an Old Bay butter sauce. The difference maker is its fresh tortillas, which you can buy and use to make your own version.

Speaking of which, this is the intriguing recipe I’ll be using to make tuna, goat cheese, and spinach tacos on Sunday.

1/3 cup sour cream

2 ounces room-temperature goat cheese, crumbled

1 1/2 pounds (1/2-inch-thick) tuna steaks

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved

4 cups baby spinach

4 tortillas

Directions:
Combine sour cream and goat cheese in a bowl, stirring until blended. Set aside.

Sprinkle tuna steaks with salt and pepper. Heat oil in a grill pan or skillet over medium-high heat. Add tuna, and cook two minutes per side. Remove from skillet, and set aside.

Add tomatoes to skillet, and remove from heat. Cook tomatoes with residual heat for one minute, stirring constantly. Add spinach; stir one minute or until slightly wilted. Remove from skillet.

Warm tortillas according to package directions. Slice tuna across the grain into 1/4-inch strips. Place strips on half of each tortilla. Top with spinach and tomatoes, and drizzle with goat cheese mixture.

What to Drink: Like many cities, San Diego has undergone a craft-beer revolution in recent years. The best to migrate east, in my opinion, is Stone Brewing Co. (located in nearby Escondido), which brews the tremendous (and tremendously hoppy) Stone IPA. Mixed 12-packs, the devilish Ruination IPA (8.2 percent ABV), and other varieties are available at Total Wine in Towson and other liquor stores in the area.

If you’re thinking cocktail, look no further than this one, inspired by the man who delivered the most memorable line in the history of local news The Ultimate Ron Burgundy Scotchy Scotch Scotch Cocktail, created by Nate Howell, head bartender at Cusp Dining & Drinks in La Jolla, just outside of San Diego:

2 cups brown sugar

2 oz. Scotch (Howell uses Famous Grouse)

½ oz. fresh lemon juice

½ oz. fresh grapefruit juice

2 dashes peach bitters

2 dashes angostura bitters

1 orange or lemon peel, for garnish

Directions:
In a small saucepan over medium heat, heat brown sugar and one cup water. Stir until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and let cool.

In a shaker with ice, combine the Scotch, lemon and grapefruit juices, half-ounce of brown sugar simple syrup, and bitters. Shake vigorously and strain into a short glass with large ice. Garnish with an orange peel.
