Just when we thought we had finally escaped the “Baby Shark” song invading our social media feeds, the ominous theme from Jaws will now begin playing on a loop as Discovery Channel brings back its annual promotion celebrating the gargantuan fish. Shark Week is officially upon us, and outposts all over the city are celebrating in style.

The National Aquarium, one of the Inner Harbor’s crown jewels, is offering a specialized tour if you dare to walk with the sharks. But for those with cravings for more tasty shark-themed specials, there are plenty of ways to get in on the fun without going to the beach. From ocean-themed drinks to edible shark candy, here are a few highlights:

7/28-8/4: Woody’s Cantina
Enjoy Shark Week with fin-credible specials at this rooftop spot in Fells Point. This Mexican restaurant is serving up (Great) White Claws or Landshark bottles for $5 or less. Of course, you can catch the main event—while taking in the rooftop views—with the 24/7 shark coverage on all of its TV screens.

7/28-8/4: Black Eyed Suzie’s
Suzie’s in Bel Air hosts regular specials like martini Mondays, kids-eat-free Thursdays, and daily happy hours from 2-7 p.m., but this week the neighborhood bar is partnering with Malibu and Jameson to bring you shark-inspired food and drink specials. You can drink like a fish at this celebration while tuning in to the weeklong Discovery Channel event.

8/3: Wayward Smokehouse Viewing Party
Head over to this party at Wayward Smokehouse in Federal Hill to get hooked on Landshark specials, shark-bite bombs, games, gifts, giveaways, and fittingly themed mini pools. Not into seafood? Classic American barbecue dishes are smoked daily by executive chef and pit master Josh White.

7/28-8/4: Atwater’s
Swim over to Atwater’s to find a shark lurking in your latte. In addition to the coffees topped with shark-designed latte art, the homegrown cafe will also have all of its signature sandwiches and salads for a meal you can really sink your teeth into. Don’t let the lack of seafood fool you, shark week is in full swing here.

7/28-8/4: Nacho Mama’s
This Tex-Mex favorite features margaritas famously served in hubcaps. For Shark Week, Nacho Mama’s is serving up a scene from Jaws in the form of a blue margarita with a facedown figurine, splash of grenadine, and blue-gummy sharks circling. It might seem intense, but you’ll be drinking in comfort on dry land.

7/28-8/4: Papi’s Tacos
In Hampden, Papi’s Tacos is mixing up a variety of ocean-themed cocktails. The newest location will bait customers with a frozen Shark Week house margarita featuring a gummy-ring life preserver. But, don’t stop there. There’s also an expanded drink menu including the tequila-infused “Mako-Rita,” “Coral Reef” (Malibu rum, pineapple juice, grenadine, whipped cream), and the “Hot Hammerhead” with jalepeno-infused tequila and club soda.

7/28-8/4: Charm City Chocolate
This corner candy store made the perfect treat to lure in customers with a sweet tooth. The chocolatiers have fished out chocolate-covered blue raspberry gummy sharks, making the man-eater become the pray. In this case, we strongly encourage you to play with your food.

7/28-8/4: Frazier’s on the Avenue
Any shark would appreciate these fishy specials, and Frazier’s includes an array of seafood to devour. Chomp down on beer-battered ahi tuna bites, fish tacos, and salmon cake sliders. With these features, it is hard not to take the bait.

For the 34th year, the Caribbean Carnival returns to Baltimore with a burst of festive celebration, authentic cuisine, and vibrant culture at Clifton Park. Teeming in color and energy, the full-day festival starts on Saturday with a colossal parade, lasting five full hours with elaborate floats, bedazzled costumes, loud music, and lively dance. Be sure to be one of the thousand in attendance, and afterwards, spend your afternoon in the park, with dozens of musical acts, family entertainment, children’s activities, and, of course, delicious Caribbean food, such as jerk chicken, rice and peas, and fresh fruit.

It’s a beautiful day in Baltimore, and what better way to roll off the workweek and toast to summer than raising a glass over the sparkling Inner Harbor waves. Tonight, the Maryland Science Center hosts its first Patio Party of the season, with drinks, live music, and light fare outside on the waterfront. Soak up the sunset, sip on beer and wine, and listen to local folk band The Herd of Main Street as they play beneath the center’s metallic sculpture and the stars. Once the sun sets, admire Domino Sugar, glowing in the distance, and look for the Dippers in the sky.

Reginald F.

Out of Baltimore’s darkest days came a beacon of brilliant light and a reminder that our city is full of promise. In the midst of the riots, then-26-year-old West Baltimore resident and aspiring photographer Devin Allen turned around to snap a picture: a swarm of riot police chasing a young, bandana-ed black man, running through the city streets. Allen posted it to Instagram, and then, in the blink of an eye, it was on the cover of Time magazine. He has since been published in the pages of the Baltimore Sun and on the “Lens” blog of the The New York Times, with interview request coming from every news outlet imaginable. This weekend, less than three months after the blink of his camera’s shutter, he opens his first solo show at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum. In its new community space, Allen will unveil large-scale images from the protests of all sides involved, and on Saturday, he’ll be there himself, describing his experiences and discussing ways to empower the city. This is a don’t-miss event, and while it’ll be open through December, we think it should join a permanent collection.

At the 8×10, three Baltimore bands will come together to let their unique sounds and myriad influences blend in an energetic night of local talent. Brooks Long & Mad Dog No Good will fuse R&B, blues, and old-school soul into a feel-good time, while Femi the DriFish and The Out of Water eXperience mixes hip-hop and alternative rock with Common-meets-Rage-Against-the-Machine flow and a whole lot of funk.
July 10: Twilight Swim at Patterson Park Pool

Locations, times, and prices vary.

It’s already July 10. The days are only getting shorter and
you’re not getting any younger, so go—get out there. Seize your summer and live
a little. As the sun begins to set, kick off your shoes and peel your shirt
from your sticky summer skin. Run across the thick wet grass, and jump—like a
kid again, suspended in gravity for just a moment before you splash into an aquamarine
pool. Do it tonight. Revel in that kind of youthful summer buzz at Patterson
Park, and relive the glory days of sneaking into your neighbor’s backyard for a
skinny dip with your high school crush. Taking place in public pools throughout the
city every Friday night of summer, these after-hours, adults-only swims are
BYOB, with DJs in tow to provide the soundtrack for your magical night. Like we said, it’s a
beautiful day. Summer’s going fast. Jump off the deep end.

Shark Week, a.k.a the “Super Bowl of the Ocean,” is back for its 28th season and the National Aquarium is working with Discovery Channel to provide some unique, educational programming.

Throughout this week, the National Aquarium—on-site, via social media, and live-streaming through the Discovery Channel’s website—will host a variety of events and activities for shark fans:

From a National Aquarium press release:

From July 6-8, the National Aquarium will host daily diver chats at 3:20 p.m. led by members of the Aquarium’s biological programs and education teams. Experts will answer questions from Blacktip Reef Shark Cam viewers and Aquarium guests. The public is encouraged to submit their questions in advance on Twitter using #SharkDiverChat.

At 11 a.m. on July 7, the Aquarium will host its first-ever Facebook Q&A on sharks. The Q&A will bring together in-house shark experts and others from partner organizations including Ocearch.

On July 8, the Discovery Channel will be live-streaming the National Aquarium’s Blacktip Reef shark feeding via Meerkat at 9 a.m.

On July 9, shark researcher Chris Fischer will give a lecture entitled “Tracking Great White Sharks: Inspired Boy Becomes Global Explorer” as part of the Aquarium’s Marjorie Lynn Banks Lecture Series. Fischer, a well-known personality in outdoor television and conservation circles who’s show “Offshore Adventures” won two Emmys and was America’s most watched outdoor television show during its 180-episode run on ESPN, will discuss what inspired him to help great white sharks and other apex ocean predators.

Shark enthusiasts can also test their knowledge of the prehistoric, predators of the marine world throughout the week with an interactive quiz hosted live on the Aquarium’s website.

“The infatuation with sharks has grown exponentially over the years, and with it, so have the many myths,” said Holly Bourbon, curator of fishes at National Aquarium. “Shark Week is the perfect opportunity for us to debunk some of those myths and shed light on the beauty and truth behind these amazing animals.”

New highlights on the Discovery Channel this week include video footage of the biggest great white ever filmed, a mako shark cam, and expert discussions about the recent attacks of 11 people off North Carolina and South Carolina beaches.

Sharks have also been in the local news for other reasons lately, including a hammerhead sighting off Ocean City and the appearance of a giant great white—a 16-foot, 3,400-pounder—a half-mile off the Jersey Shore. It’s all coinciding this summer, by the way, with the 40th anniversary of Jaws—which we should note, if you prefer your shark viewing from the safety and comfort of a movie seat—is getting a pair of screenings over the next few days at The Senator.
