Some stood, some knelt, some sat, some stayed in the locker room, and one even stretched for the National Anthem during Sunday’s NFL games. Following comments made by President Donald Trump at a political rally in Alabama on Friday calling on NFL owners to fire any player who “disrespects our flag,” multiple teams in the organization came together on Sunday in one of the biggest displays of open protest.

The Ravens and Jaguars kicked off a long string of protests in London Sunday morning with 10 Ravens players—including Terrell Suggs, C.J. Mosley, and Lardarius Webb—either taking a knee or standing with locked arms in solidarity in response to the president’s remarks.

“That’s a total disrespect of our heritage,” President Trump told supporters on Friday in Huntsville, Alabama. “That’s a total disrespect of everything that we stand for. Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now.’”

This was the first time any Ravens player protested—just as quarterback Colin Kaepernick did back in 2016 in protest against the treatment of African Americans in the United States.

Following the Ravens early game, a number of other NFL players followed suit by staying in the locker room during the Anthem, including members of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Seattle Seahawks, and Tennessee Titans. Trump responded to the series of protest on Twitter Sunday.

Supporters of the protests insist the act is less about the American flag and National Anthem, and more about the right to exercise free speech and speak up about racial injustice.

“In nearly 25 years as a sports executive, and a lifetime spent as an American citizen, I have never been so appalled by the abusive blood lust of my country’s highest governmental office, to defile my country’s constitutional guarantees,” president of MASN Sports, John P. Angelos, wrote on Twitter. “Anti-American and anti-citizen abuse of [the Trump administration’s] power should be repudiated, protested, and legally opposed on every front.”

However, opponents of the athletic protests believe their actions are unpatriotic and disrespectful to those who have served or are serving in the military. Locally, Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey R. Gahler took to Facebook to express his anger with the Ravens franchise.

“The embarrassment that is the NFL continues and people wonder why I am on strike,” Gahler wrote. “Ravens join the nonsense of taking knee [sic] while on the soil of the country we gained our independence from. Will be doing a housecleaning of any Ravens merchandise later today and getting it all ready for the burn.”

There are many people in Baltimore that have mixed feelings about the protests that happened on the field Sunday, wondering if there is a way to simultaneously respect the right to free speech while also honoring the country and its veterans.

“Just a thought . . . what if every past, current, and future American military person chose to take a knee instead of fighting to keep our country safe and free?” Bar Liquorice owner Jeff Cahill posted on Facebook. “I do respect anyone’s right to peacefully protest, but it has to be tempered with the respect for those who fought and lost their lives [my family included] in service to this country, which is what our flag and National Anthem symbolizes.”

The protests have also gone beyond the NFL, with Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry declining an invitation to visit The White House. President Trump then rescinded the invitation and Lebron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers sounded off on Instagram. The ripple effect continued into the MLB when Oakland Athletics’ catcher Bruce Maxwell, who is from a military family, became the first baseball player in history to kneel during the National Anthem on Saturday.

How was it, being inducted by Michelle Obama?
It was surreal. I still haven’t entirely processed it yet. Being in the White House was like a walking dream. Everything seems strangely familiar from TV but also so exciting and surreal. I highly doubt anything in my life will be as nerve-wracking and cool as reading a poem there. Were were also lucky enough to have a conversation about writing with Michelle Obama’s speechwriters and that was very fun. Michelle Obama is so nice and wonderful. Knowing that the First Lady is passionate about poetry and this program is so rewarding as a writer.

What do your future plans look like?
This is really long-term, but I’ve always wanted to be an English teacher. I love seeing people get excited in English class. I’ve been lucky enough to have good English teachers in high school—pretty great ones—and just seeing my classmates come to life discussing old and new works of literature makes me so happy.

Would you ever consider being a poet as a career?
I’m always going to want to write poetry—I’m always going to find downtime to write, just because I feel nervous when I don’t. I have so many things to say. So I’ll always write, but teaching is really what I think I want to do with my future.

Has living in Maryland inspired or influenced any of your writing?
I’ve written some Baltimore-based poems. I’m really inspired by John Waters and Divine and that whole counterculture of Baltimore. This city has a unique spirit and lots of poetic potential. There are small groups working hard to create poetry communities, but I don’t see any poetry readings comparable to what you could find in D.C., for example. While I don’t have any set ideas in mind just yet, I know I would love to work with Baltimore residents in creating a poetry workshop or something of the sort.

Do you have any advice for young poets or writers?
Yes. Make friends with English teachers. Make friends with teachers that love words. I promise they’ll be great guides and inspirations for you. Also, keep yourself open to wonder and amazement. Don’t close yourself off to what’s going on around you. Sometimes I like to just sit and observe. When I’m waiting for the bus, I’ll just look at the way the light is hitting a building.

And this is another piece of advice: Carry an notebook so you can write down all the little things that come to you in the day, because I think being a poet means being receptive to the world around you and knowing how to translate that into words. Be receptive to the world around you.

	The president’s favorite character?

	Omar, of course.

	The White House released a
12-minute video yesterday of the president and Simon discussing the groundbreaking show based on Baltimore and the fallout of the drug war on local communities.

“When I came in as a police reporter, the federal prison population was about 34 percent violent offenders,” says Simon. “When I left as a police reporter 13 years later, it was about 7 percent.”

Just last month, several Baltimore Design School students had the opportunity of a lifetime to further their education at the White House, where they met some of the biggest names in the fashion world, as well as the First Lady.

At the first ever Fashion Education Workshop, 10 BDS sophomores—each enrolled in the school’s fashion class—joined other students from East Coast schools in touring the White House, and enjoying specialized panels and workshops (among them were technology in fashion, journalism, and more).

So which big names in the fashion world participated in the event? Maci Thomas, class of 2017, met Anna Wintour, Lucky magazine editor-in-chief Eva Chen, and even ate lunch with one of the creators of ModCloth.

Other top designers included Zac Posen, Jason Wu, Phillip Lim, Diane Von Furstenberg, Thom Browne, Sara Blakely, Tracy Reese, and Prabal Gurung.

“I felt really important,” Colette Lewis, class of 2017 said. “I was like, ‘this is really an honor to be here with all of these people,’ and this doesn’t happen every day, so, it was really cool to be there.”

During the panels, a guest blogger interviewed the fashion gurus, who also took questions from the audience.

“I think the best part was hearing all the designers on the panel talk,” Quentin Klein-Alfano, class of 2017, said while showing off his notebook, which included an autograph and sketch from designers. “It really made me think about like what I was capable of as a designer. Then I got to talk to a few of them after.”

Classmate Edison Estes took a lot away from the panel as well.

“I really liked watching the designers get interviewed in the panel,” Estes said. “I’ve heard work hard and you’ll get what you want all my life, but these designers, they were talking about how working hard had gotten them to be the owners of billion dollar fashion corporations.”

Michelle Obama, who lead the event as part of her “Reach Higher” education initiative, emphasized a similar message during her speech, which also seemed to resonate with the students.

“Michelle Obama taught me that you have to work hard in order to achieve success,” Alexandria Wingate, class of 2017, said in reference to the First Lady’s speech. “You can’t slack off because that’s stopping you from where you want to be at in the future.”

And with such an impressive roster of some of the most influential leaders in the fashion industry, it’s no surprise that some of the students were a little star struck. When asked who she was most excited to meet, Bryanne Kelly, class of 2017, responded, “Everyone. I was just happy to be there.”

There has been a lot of political controversy swirling around the two recent conventions, but let’s focus on something almost everyone loves: craft beer.

Last month, President Obama was at a coffee shop in Knoxville, Iowa, chatting with Bradley Magerkurth, a salesman for a beer distributor. The two got to talking and Obama revealed his inner brewmaster. “He said, ‘You know Michelle and I brew a beer at the White House, we brew a honey beer,'” Magerkurth told the Boston Globe. “And then he said, ‘You know what? I should get a beer for you.'” Obama’s aide quickly returned with a bottle he retrieved from Ground Force One and handed it to Magerkurth.

This simple act stirred up quite the brouhaha among several-thousand beer enthusiasts, who on August 23, submitted a “We The People” petition asking to see the first official White House brew recipe. Well, this past Saturday, they got their wish as the recipe for White House Honey Ale was released.

The concoction (which aficionados say is a fairly standard mix of light malt extract, amber crystal malt, honey, gypsum, yeast, and corn sugar) is believed to be the first beer brewed on the grounds of the White House. The honey comes from the administration’s official beekeeper and all the brewing equipment and ingredients are paid for by the Obamas.

Along with the recipe, the administration also released a video of two White House chefs going through the whole month-long brewing process. Let the race to replicate the White House ale begin!
