Fashion Design students from Stevenson University will bring a Baltimore twist to New York Fashion Week 2015, where juniors and seniors will showcase their designs on the runway. The exhibition, entitled “We Are One In Fashion,” features attire inspired by traditional global fashions from around the world. Each piece draws inspiration from the styles of a different country and culture, including Spain, Brazil, Egypt, and Greece. The collection is made up of 16 evening gowns and one menswear garment, a silver brocade suit representative of styles from India.

The budding designers will get the chance to experience Fashion Week from head to toe. Not only will they have the opportunity of a lifetime to display their work in a runway show, but the students will also work with professional models, stylists, and make-up artists, such as Jane Bellis, a popular UK Stylist. Stevenson will be collaborating with PLITZS Fashion Marketing, a New York-based company dedicated to promoting and showcasing the unique and diverse work of emerging designers, both locally and internationally.

“The partnership between Stevenson University and PLITZS Fashion Marketing is going to highlight the talents of our students, and provide them with the opportunity to connect with industry leaders,” shares Sally DiMarco, program coordinator and associate professor of Fashion Design.

The runway show takes place in the midst of Fashion Week on Thursday, February 19 in the grand ballroom of the historic Hotel Pennsylvania, 401 7th Avenue, New York, NY, in the center of the garment district.

With a new name and location, Nouveau Home & Interior Design has revamped its image to fuse modern glamour with reclaimed vintage style. Previously known as Nouveau Contemporary Goods in Belvedere Square, owners Steve Appel and Lee Whitehead have relocated the store back to its roots in historic Mount Vernon, where it originally opened in 1987.

“We are downtown residents who have always identified ourselves with Mount Vernon, its history, culture, and charm. With the trend toward urban living, it makes perfect sense for us to be here, near the popular City Café, and other growing downtown businesses,” says co-owner Whitehead about the company’s desire to move back to the city.

Nouveau offers a mix of contemporary home décor combined with vintage items, including radios, telephones, and cocktail sets from the ’40s and ’50s, news-print style prohibition artwork from the ’60s, as well as watches and other personal accessories.

Nouveau has made a name for itself, furnishing the city, both residential and commercial properties, as well as homes of celebrities living outside of Baltimore, such as Johnny Depp and Julia Roberts. In addition to household items, Nouveau also offers Whitehead & Appel interior design services, which range from full service interior design to accessory redesign.

Stylist Gary Godbey shares his inspiration behind the opening page of our Holiday Gift Guide feature.

Q: Explain the process of creating the scene for our Gift Guide opener.

I’m really inspired by vintage things and have been since I was a small child. I’ve always been a collector of things. I like being able to mix simple and vintage with current and modern items. When I talked to Amanda [the art director] about the different gifts that were going to be featured, I immediately knew I pretty much had something vintage that could represent each category.

Q: What is your favorite part of the whole design process?

I think my favorite part of the design process is watching what I see in my mind come to life. It’s like when you picture something in your head and then it actually comes out the way you want it to in person. The satisfaction of being able to express your vision—I think that’s probably my favorite part.

Q: Where did you find the items you used for the shoot?

Some of them were actually mine, from my home. I borrowed [the majority of] pieces from Esther & Harper and Becket Hitch (where I work now).

[See below for credits.]

Q: Was there a funny moment while creating the display?

I borrowed a [real] deer head from a friend and I didn’t want it to get damaged, so I belted it in the front seat of my car—it looked like a passenger. On my way to the studio to unload, it was during the morning rush hour, so everyone was sitting in traffic. It was a very exciting moment for a lot of people going to work—everyone was waving at me. I didn’t realize why until a couple in front of me turned around and gave me the thumbs up, and then I was like, ‘Oh my gosh.’ Definitely a good start to the day for me.
