It seems like things in Baltimore are constantly changing—from restaurants and storefronts to entire city blocks—but one name we’ve been able to count on for more than 75 years is Eddie’s of Roland Park. This weekend, the beloved gourmet grocery store is throwing a Fido-friendly sidewalk soirée to benefit BARCS Animal Shelter, featuring a classic grill-out menu of beef, veggie, or chicken hot dogs with all of the fixin’s. Bring your four-legged friend to dance along to beats by DJ Baby Alcatraz and support this mutt-to-market cause.

This boozy festival returns for its fifth year with a dizzying 160-plus wines from around the world, snacks by more than 30 gourmet food trucks, and tons of sweet treats such as adult snow cones. Sip the day away at Canton Waterfront Park and, in between glasses, take in cooking demonstrations and wine seminars, and browse through area craft vendors.

June 15-Aug. 11: The Janet & Walter Sondheim Artscape Prize Finalists Exhibition

The Walters Art Museum, 600 N. Charles St. Wed.-Sun. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Free.

In preparation for the much-anticipated Artscape festival on July 19-21, visit the Walters Art Museum to stand in awe of the work by the seven finalists in this year’s Janet & Walter Sondheim Artscape Prize competition. This prestigious award grants a $25,000 fellowship to further the career of a local visual artist or collaborator, and the 2019 finalists are Negar Ahkami, Akea Brionne Brown, Cheeny Celebrado-Royer, Schroeder Cherry, Phylicia Ghee, Jackie Milad, and Stephanie Williams. This exhibition represents some of the most impressive pieces in the region, so be on the lookout for the announcement of the winner on July 13.

If you joined the Grammy Awards audience by giving Brandi Carlile a standing ovation in your living room after her striking performance of “The Joke” at this year’s ceremony, you’re not alone. The world has (finally) caught onto this Seattle native’s awe-inspiring lyrics and Americana-roots sound, and this Friday, she’s bringing show-stopping hits like “Every Time I Hear That Song” and “Party of One” to the Merriweather Post Pavilion stage. Get there early to find a spot on the lawn and spend the evening belting out hit after hit from By The Way, I Forgive You.

There’s no doubt about it: The city of Baltimore is ready to paint the town rainbow. From boozy fundraisers and disco parties to Pride-themed movie nights and gallery talks, this weekend’s Pride festivities will certainly be one for the books. We’ve laid out a month-long itinerary of events to check off your list, but here’s a few must-dos to hit during the official Baltimore Pride weekend: the annual 11-block Pride Parade along North Charles Street followed by the iconic high-heel race, the last Charm City Pride Fest at legendary club Grand Central, an all-hours Version with Trillnatured dance party at The Crown, and the Charm City Exxxtreme Glow Party at Mosaic Nightclub & Lounge with special guest Shunga Cain from RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Soft-shell crab season is in full swing, and to celebrate, local chef Craig Falk is bringing his crustacean-centric pop-up concept to R. House for a few days of deep-fried deliciousness. This weekend, head to Remington’s popular food hall to get your hands on the Big Softy’s namesake soft crab sandwich, as well as daily specials like wild mushroom crab pasta on Friday, crab-and-corn stuffed squash blossoms on Saturday, and crab cakes for a dad-approved brunch on Father’s Day.

This Saturday marks the grand unveiling of The Walters Art Museum’s magnificent new 1 West Mount Vernon Place. After a four-year revitalization process, this 19th-century mansion has received a stunning facelift, with its Tiffany stained-glass skylight and grand spiral staircase on display in all its restored glory, plus a new ceramics exhibition on the second floor. Celebrate this historic space in the heart of Mt. Vernon with a block party featuring live music, eats from Dizzy Cow Pizzeria and Mr. Souvlaki, and ceramics-themed activities.

June 16: Baltimore Band Block Party

WTMD’s First Thursdays concerts are the see-and-be-seen shows of the summer, both for the fans in the crowd and the bands onstage. On Saturday, head to WTMD Studios to support local acts like singer-songwriter Shelby Blondell, dream-pop sirens Waterplanet, and epic rockers Lenore LeNoire as they compete for the chance to join the September lineup. During this annual fundraiser for the alternative radio station, each ticket buys a vote for your favorite act to perform a live set that night and to move onto the final round of this high-stakes competition.

Rock your rainbow gear and celebrate Baltimore’s vibrant LGBTQ+ community during this weekend’s 43rd annual Baltimore Pride. With a jam-packed weekend of events, kick off the festivities on Friday night with the Twilight on the Terrace benefit cocktail party at Gertrude’s, a drag show at the First Unitarian Church of Baltimore featuring local queens Dusty Ray Bottoms and Washington Heights, and GayCon, a new Pride dance party created by Abdu Ali and featuring performances by DDm. On Saturday, join thousands at the annual big-bang block party, featuring the high heel race up Cathedral Street, the colorful 11-block parade to Station North, and headline performances by Baltimore Club maven TT the Artist and rising hip-hop artist Taylor Bennett. To wrap up the weekend, head to Druid Hill Park on Sunday for a family-friendly festival with live music, face-painting, and drag performances.

Recently, we’ve seen local events explore everything from home brewing to tea-tails, and now, oenophiles will be able to get their fix at the upcoming Baltimore Wine Fest.

The second annual soiree hosted by B. Scene Events & Promotions will take over Canton Waterfront Park on Saturday, June 18 from 12-7 p.m., featuring upwards of 140 wines, light bites from local food vendors, chef demonstrations, and live music.

B. Scene founder Beth Laverick says that the inaugural festival attracted a sold-out crowd of 6,000, and, with expanded wine offerings and a revamped food lineup, this year’s event will be able to accommodate an additional 2,000.

“People like to sip and socialize,” she says. “I love wine expos for the variety, but I also love festivals for the casual atmosphere, so the wine fest is a good way to combine the two.”

Wine lovers can look forward to sampling local blends from Linganore Winecellars, as well as international sips from as far as Chile, Argentina, and Australia. There will also be plenty of food pairings to peruse, with returning restaurants like Dooby’s, Heavy Seas Alehouse, DogWatch Tavern, and Pitango Gelato being joined by newbies like Points South Latin Kitchen, Snake Hill, and Bottoms up Bagels.

Specifically, the food offerings will include dishes like pulled pork sandwiches from HarborQue, crabby fries from Jimmy’s Famous Seafood, True Chesapeake Oyster Co. Skinny Dippers from The Local Oyster, and shrimp and crabs from Captain James Landing.

“The restaurants are one of the things that make it so unique,” Laverick says. “We didn’t want to have [typical] concession stands, so being able to focus on some of the best restaurants in the city is huge. I’d rather enjoy a nice crisp sauvignon blanc with ceviche than with fried dough.”

A jam-packed live cooking demonstration schedule will highlight various afternoon workshops led by local chefs Kevin Cauthorne of Myth & Moonshine, Dara Bunjon of Sotto Sopra, and Cyrus Keefer of pop-up kitchen Defie Moi.

While taking in the waterfront views, festival-goers will also be able to browse handmade wares from local crafters, enjoy family-friendly activities in a designated kid’s zone, and dance in the grass to live music performances. This year’s lineup has doubled in size, featuring local pop-rockers Michele McTierney Band, soul and blues musicians Gypsy Soul Revival, one-man folk band Skribe, and alternative rock and roots trio Pressing Strings.

Admission packages are carnival style (vendors accept food and drink tickets, rather than cash) and start at $15. Additional tickets will be available for purchase onsite, and a portion of all proceeds will be donated to the Baltimore City Department of Recreation & Parks—which works to preserve city gathering places including Canton Waterfront Park.

Laverick, who also organizes the annual end-of-summer Baltimore Seafood Fest (scheduled for Saturday, September 17 this year), says that these large-scale events do more than meets the eye when it comes to uniting the community.

“You don’t find these festivals everywhere,” she says. “Baltimore has had to overcome some obstacles over the past year, and it’s nice to be able to come together, have a good time, and show visitors how great it is to be a local. I’m a big believer in the idea that if you keep peoples’ calendars filled, they’ll stay.”
