Sharpen your skates and tighten the laces, Baltimore’s Inner Harbor ice rink is officially open for the season.

The new ice rink opened Friday in its new location at the top of the Inner Harbor Amphitheater, providing this year’s patrons with waterfront views overlooking the harbor. Thanks to the slight change in venue (last year’s rink was located across the street at McKeldin Square) there’s more space to skate with 6,000 square feet of ice.

With a bigger area to accommodate skaters and a new location more accessible to foot traffic, Waterfront Partnership hopes the new rink will attract even more visitors.

“In 2014, we welcomed over 20,000 people and saw marriage proposals, appearances from Santa and Navy midshipmen, Special Olympics activities and lots more. We look forward to welcoming even more visitors to the Waterfront this year,” said Laurie Schwartz, president of Waterfront Partnership.

Plenty of holiday-themed events and programs are planned throughout the season, including Costume Skates, Frost Fest, Pajama Skate, and SkateFest, benefitting Special Olympics Maryland. Visitors can find a full lineup of events and details on discounts, parking, skates, and more on the rink’s website.

The rink will remain open through Monday, January 18. Skates are available to rent on site for $4 and season passes are also available. Open hours are Mondays, 3:00-7:00 p.m.; Tuesdays through Thursdays, 3:00-8:00 p.m.; Saturdays, 11:00 a.m.–11:00 p.m.; and Sundays, 11:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m.

Craft beer and spirits might be all the rage right now,
but cider is the future. While local spots like Millstone Cellars are spreading
across the state, a slew of others are sweeping the nation, so there’s no
better time for Baltimore’s beloved beer house to turn its Fells Point pub into
a sour, hard-apple sipping sanctuary. Expect dozens of national and international
sours and ciders on draft and in bottles, including dark bitter or peaty wild
versions from Italy, fruit lambics from Belgium, aged oaky reserves from
France, and much more. At the end of the day, if cider’s not your cup of booze,
the beloved beer house has over 1,000 brews to choose from.

This weeklong event featured a medley of 20-plus performances by local and regional talent, including Baltimore Improv Group, Baltimore Shakespeare Factory, and Gilded Lily Burlesque. This weekend, catch the tail end of it with theater, comedy, improv, and dance at venues like Terrault Contemporary, Mercury Theatre, Gallery 788, and Church & Co, followed by after-parties with shows, music, and drinks at Liam Flynn’s Ale House and Joe Squared each night.

From “Best of Baltimore” winner Paul Rucker or local
artist Joyce J. Scott to Glen Ligon and Basquiat, race has long been an
important source of inspiration for the art world in Baltimore and beyond.
Through different mediums, artists have discussed topics like identity, social
justice, and civil rights—and locally, grassroots works are sprouting up like
the
by the likes of Jacob Lawrence, a prolific painter known for his themes of
social protest and African-American life, be a part of a conversation on these significant
artworks, like those by Willie Cole (pictured above) and Alison Saar on display
in the museum. Moderated by social entrepreneur and philanthropist Rodney
Foxworth, panelists include Dr. Sheri Parks, associate
dean for arts and humanities at University of Maryland, Dr. James Smalls, art historian
and professor at University of Maryland Baltimore County, Ailish Hopper, poet
and professor at Goucher College, and Susan Harbage Page, artist and professor
at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The December holiday season comes early this weekend with the opening of the newly relocated Inner Harbor ice rink. The new rink is 6,000 square feet (20 percent larger) and located at the top of the amphitheater with clear views of the Inner Harbor and Domino Sugar sign. Take a date, the whole family, or just go by yourself. Try out some twirls. Fall over. Pull a wobbly SRB. But best of all, take a second to stop and stare up at the twinkling lights of our little city and feel like a kid again.

Back in July, we let you know that Waterfront Partnership was opening up an outdoor ice rink at the corner of Pratt and Light streets. This morning, the rink officially opened and Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and Olympic figure skater Kimmie Meissner were on hand to christen the new space.

“I love Baltimore in the wintertime and this rink is the icing on the cupcake,” Mayor Rawlings-Blake said. “Plus, it’s a great place to have a cheap date.”

The mayor recalled skating in Baltimore when she was a young girl, as there was an ice rink on Rash Field that was created in 1988. The rink stayed open until 1991, reopened in 1993, closed again in 2002, and then was open seasonally from 2003-2005.

“I did my first show here in Baltimore 10 years ago,” Meissner said. “I’m excited the rink is back and I’m excited to be here.”

Both the mayor and Meissner tested out the ice rink first, along with regional dance troupe The Next Ice Age. “I’ll let you guys have all of that middle space,” Rawlings-Blake said as she gingerly made her way around the rink’s wall.

Then the rink was opened up to the public. The ice itself is still a bit bumpy with some frozen leaves and debris, but a few more nights of skating or Zamboni treatment should do the trick.

The outdoor rink will be open seasonally, until January 19. There are hockey skates available for rent for $3, admission to the rink is $9, and a season pass is available for $175. Just in time for the holidays, it will remain open on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day.

A nice touch is that Thursday-Sunday, there will be food and refreshments available from local food trucks. Today, La Cakerie served hot cocoa, cider, coffee, and donuts—which was much appreciated in the 30-degree temperatures.

Though it’s hard to imagine, cooler months are not too far away. And just today, Waterfront Partnership was granted a five-year licensing agreement that allows for an ice skating rink to be installed at McKeldin Square in the Inner Harbor for public use during the winter months.

The rink, which will be run by Rink Management Services, is set to open November 21 and continue operation through February.

“We’ve wanted to bring an outdoor ice rink back to the Harbor for years. Waterfront Partnership began seriously exploring the idea of an ice skating rink during last year’s “It’s a Waterfront Life” campaign and have put a lot of work into it since then, even traveling to different cities to learn what works well from others,” said Laurie Schwartz, president of Waterfront Partnership. “I think an ice skating rink at McKeldin Square will be a big draw for local families as well as visitors.”

While McKeldin Square may not exactly be Rockefeller Center, we think the outdoor ice rink will add a little extra merriment during the holiday season.
