Lance Humphries was planning to go shopping. On his list: LED lights. Lots of them.

Humphries is executive director of the Mount Vernon Place Conservancy, the nonprofit that runs Baltimore’s annual Washington Monument Lighting, an event that, for more than a half-century, has illuminated the focal point of one of the city’s most historic neighborhoods.

Planning for it begins in August and, on this day in early October, Humphries was preparing to place an order for 10,000 lights that will attach to 28 strands to be hung on the 178-foot-tall monument to the United States’ first president, George Washington.

“The monument lighting is kind of the official launch of the holiday season in Baltimore—it’s like our Rockefeller Center Christmas tree,” he says.

They don’t buy new lights every year, he explains, but the current ones are on their last legs.

The idea for the spectacle came from—who else?—Mayor William Donald Schaefer. The colorful politician never missed an opportunity to promote his city and saw a similar display in Indianapolis’ Monument Circle. Baltimore’s first lighting took place in 1971 and, since then, it has grown exponentially. For years, it was run by the Downtown Partnership, but in 2022, the Conservancy took over. Formed as a nonprofit in 2008, their mission is to restore, maintain, and manage the monument, as well as the surrounding park squares of Mount Vernon Place.

But they don’t do it on their own. Dozens of individuals and organizations are involved in staging the event, from Downtown Partnership to Midtown Community Benefits District. More than 20 vendors sell food to the crowd, which averages 10,000 people. The city’s fire department reviews and approves permitting for the fireworks, which are launched from the plaza. Roughly 1,000 are shot off by Curtis Bay’s Image Engineering.

Emma Loftus has one of the best perches for the five-and-a-half-minute pyrotechnics show. The associate director of the conservancy, she’s typically watching from a sponsor party at the Engineers Club or Topside, a restaurant on the top floor of the nearby Hotel Revival that hosts an annual watch party. “It’s a spectacular show in a spectacular setting,” she says.

Humphries usually watches from the event’s “Main Stage,” which hosts musical performances throughout the night from the Baltimore School for the Arts, Peabody Institute, and the Morgan State Choir. But there are also good views available on the ground from almost anywhere in the neighborhood.

Surprisingly, Humphries says one of the worst vantage points would actually be inside the monument, which is open to the public Wednesdays through Sundays but closed for the lighting. Climb 227 stairs to it and you’ll find narrow windows, meaning most of the fireworks would be exploding out of view, above the statue of George Washington that sits atop the exterior of the monument.

“If you could sit on [his] head, that would be pretty fun,” jokes Humphries.

Construction on the monument began in 1815, prior to that other Washington Monument down I-95, and another one in Boonsboro, Maryland, which some people cite as the first monument to the first president. Humphries is not one of them.

“People were climbing to the top of this monument in 1820,” he says. “It was an active monument in advance of the other ones. The Boonsboro people will beg to differ on that. I’ve read both accounts, and I think that adds to the charm.”

And as anyone who’s seen the monument fully illuminated when the switch is flipped from its basement on the first Thursday in December knows, it certainly does add to the town’s nickname, Charm City.

This festive time of year transforms Downtown Baltimore into a sparkly, bright, and merry place with memory-making experiences for adults and children. Among them are ice-skating at the Inner Harbor; classic shows and performances at Center Stage, Chesapeake Shakespeare, The Hippodrome, and Everyman Theatre; holiday prix-fixe meals at local restaurants; a Christmas Village; holiday markets; and more.

New this year, Center Plaza will be transformed into Candy Lane, a larger-than-life, candy-themed experience with installations, thousands of lights, and seasonal entertainment. Getting lost in a forest of 24-foot-tall ice cream cones and candy canes is a sweet, new way to experience Downtown. Selfies and family photos—including furry, four-legged family members—are encouraged!

Enjoy weekly programming too, including candy-themed happy hours, sweet treats, local food trucks, live DJs, free photos with Santa, and many sugary themed surprises. Candy Lane is in Center Plaza (100 N. Charles Street) will run Wednesday-Sundays from 4-9 p.m. November 20 through December 23, 2021, excluding Thanksgiving. Enjoy weekly programming featuring photos with Santa on Wednesdays and Sundays. You can also kick back and enjoy coffee, hot chocolate, teas, and mixers. Sweet treats from Deddle’s Donuts will be served, while carolers dazzle downtown pedestrians surrounding Candy Lane.

Every Thursday, Downtown Partnership will be cracking canned cocktails and pouring wine along with nonalcoholic beverages for a Thursday Happy Hours in Candy Lane. Treats from Lattimore’s Funnel Cakes and food trucks, as well as Delmarva Popcorn will be available for purchase. On Fridays and Saturdays guest will enjoy rotating local food, drink, and candy vendors, as well as live music on the plaza during the day and into the evenings.

On December 16th, things will get even sweeter with a 21+ holiday party featuring an open bar, sugary treats, and a dance party in the middle of Candy Lane. Themed outfits are encouraged, and tickets can be purchased at GoDowntownBaltimore.com.

In other news, mark your calendars for Downtown Partnership’s Annual Monument Lighting on Thursday, December 2, from 5-8 p.m. What started as a quiet gathering of neighbors a half century ago has evolved to become a longstanding Baltimore ritual and the unofficial kickoff to the holiday season. Now in its 50th year, the Monument Lighting invites Baltimoreans to celebrate the season with local food and makers, live performances, and a fireworks display. All are invited to bring their friends, neighbors, and masks for this time-honored tradition.

Another seasonal highlight to look forward to: Downtown Dollar or Less Days has been reimagined as Downtown Discovery Days (DDD) for 2022. DDD is an opportunity for families to enjoy the outstanding museums, exhibits, and businesses downtown has to offer at a significantly discounted price, or free. By extending the promotion for more than a week, Downtown Partnership is giving the public more time to attend these attractions and eliminate the long lines that typically occurred when the event was limited to just two days.

Participating attractions traditionally include: The National Aquarium, The Reginald F. Lewis Museum, Port Discovery, Maryland Science Center, Historic Ships in Baltimore, Maryland Historical Society, American Visionary Arts Museum, Star-Spangled Banner Flag House & Museum, The Jewish Museum of Maryland, and National Great Blacks In Wax Museum. Participating attractions are managing their own policies.

To Oxnard’s family, watching the annual parade has become as cherished a tradition as Christmas morning, so when she rode by her mother’s home on Hampden’s 41st Street with the whole family watching, her mom was shocked. “We quickly took pictures while the parade was stopped at a red light,” Oxnard says with a laugh. This year’s procession on December 8 will be Oxnard’s 10th time riding in the parade, with her family cheering the group on from their front stoop with hot cocoa in hand. “I grew up watching that parade, so riding in it is amazing,” she says. “It’s like coming home.”—KP Location varies. 1 p.m.. Unlike other Elvis-themed events, where he’s one of dozens of entertainers donning the singer’s signature white jumpsuit and mutton chops, Duvall looks forward to the Night of 100 Elvises, taking place this year on December 1, where the only thing the bands and acts have in common is that they’re performing songs by the King. “When you hear a bluegrass band do ‘Suspicious Minds,’ then it’s a party,” he says. “At the end of the day, we’re all out here honoring Elvis any way we know how.”

The Washington Monument lighting has been going strong for 43 years now. Something that started out as a group of neighborhood carolers has now evolved into a city-wide tradition with celebrities, fireworks, and thousands of revelers.

Last night, amidst that crowd were more than 100 protestors who marched from the Inner Harbor to Mount Vernon, prompted by the grand jury’s decision yesterday not to indict Officer Daniel Pantaleo in the death of Eric Garner. This, of course, was on the heels of a similar ruling in the Michael Brown case.

The Christmas lights on the monument were lit 25 minutes early and the fireworks ceremony was cut short, as The Sun reported this morning, because of the protestors.

“The protesters were very peaceful and very cordial, but they were making it hard to hear what was happening at the front,” Mike Evitts of Downtown Partnership told The Sun. “Ultimately, we decided to shorten the program, because you just don’t know what could happen.”

Being a member of the crowd last night, we heard mixed reactions about the demonstrators’ impact on the lighting: some were upset, some were inspired, and some (due to the sped-up schedule) missed the lighting altogether.

We compiled Baltimoreans’ various reactions on social media to portray what the monument lighting was like last night—from a multitude of perspectives.
