Dec. 22: Sundays Bakehouse

Cross Street Market, 1065 S. Charles St. Tues.-Sat. 8 a.m.-7 p.m., Sun. 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Free. 410-609-3162.

The holiday season is a time for indulgence, meaning that it won’t hurt to sneak in a couple extra calories, especially if they come from doughnuts on a visit to Sundays in Cross Street Market. From the mastermind behind Dooby’s and Sugarvale, this temporary pop-up is launching regular hours this weekend to serve up inventive doughnut flavors along with breakfast favorites. While the made-to-order egg and fried chicken sandwiches are delectable, the star of the morning show is their rotating selection of light-as-air brioche doughnuts. If you’re feeling sweet, treat yourself to holiday specials like the eggnog, dusted in cinnamon sugar and filled with a boozy milk cream, or the Raspberry Almond, a nod to the traditional thumbprint cookie. But if savory is more up your alley, don’t miss out on the NY Bagel, stuffed with jalapeño and scallion cream cheese and sprinkled with everything bagel seasoning.

The Point in Fells, 1738 Thames St. 3-6 p.m. Free. 410-327-7264.

Last-minute holiday shopping might be causing you some stress, but browsing through local vendors with a glass of wine in hand might be your perfect solution. If you couldn’t make it to any of those holiday markets we suggested in the last few weeks, fear not—here’s another one, but with a twist. As you peruse local goods by a plethora of artisans—from clothing and jewelry to dream catchers and crystals—enjoy a complimentary wine and cheese tasting hosted by The Point in Fells. If that’s not enough to convince you to stop by, there will also be $4 wines and select draft beers, along with a discounted food menu for cheers all around.

At this dazzling circus, watch as the world-class acrobats of Cirque de Soleil dangle from the rafters of the hallowed Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. For two nights in Mt. Vernon, gymnasts will contort into impossible angles and dancers will move to the seasonal scores performed by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. This holiday treat is a perfect last-minute gift for the entire family, with drinks, snacks, and even Santa in the front lobby before the show.

If you’re getting tired of the same holiday jingles, it’s time for a change in musical scenery. On Saturday evening, get into the festive spirit with Legends of Et Cetera, Baltimore’s rising indie-rock trio, along with Fractal Cat, FuzzQueen, and Matt Ellin. Although they’re yet to release their second album, Cardboard City, due out next month, these School of Rock graduates will fill the Ottobar with their wide sonic range, tight guitar rhythms, rollicking drums, and emotionally raw lyrics. Consider Legends a band to watch in 2018, as these teenagers and twentysomethings already released a debut album and sold out shows at WTMD.

The Senator Theatre, 5904 York Rd. 10 a.m. Free. 410-323-4424.

It’s been 71 years since Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life premiere at the Global Theatre, yet millions of people still watch this sentimental classic when the holiday season comes around. This Saturday, relive the film’s magic with an annual screening and food drive inside the historic Senator Theater. Seating is first-come, first-served, but in lieu of admission, they’re collecting at least $5 worth of non-perishable food items to benefit the GEDCO Cares Food Pantry, applying one of the most important lessons of George Bailey’s sobering story—selflessly giving back to those in need. After all, as he says on the big screen, “All you can take with you is that which you’ve given away.”

Vent Coffee Roasters: Union Craft Brewing’s new communal makerspace in Medfield is already 80 percent leased. Since Union Collective was announced last May, the 138,000-square-foot warehouse—which will be home to the brewery’s brand new production facility and taproom—has attracted tenants including Earth Treks, Huckle’s Gourmet Hot Sauce, and The Baltimore Whiskey Company. The latest to join the lineup is Vent, a small-batch roastery from longtime barista and coffee connoisseur Sarah Walker. Slated to open in spring 2018, Walker’s stall will have a “garage-chill vibe” with a roll-up door, picnic tables, a full coffee and espresso bar, and two skylights. Be on the lookout for traditional espresso drinks, nitro cold brew on tap, and even Chemex and Aeropress offerings. The menu will also highlight locally sourced pastries, teas, and baklava and Greek butter cookies made from Walker’s family recipes. 1700 W. 41st St.

Cowboys & Rednecks:We thought that this Federal Hill favorite was a goner. The honky-tonk hangout closed its doors last year, after owner Guy Naylor sold the property to the owners of neighboring bar Banditos. The South Charles Street space has since been rebranded as Wayward Smokehouse, but plans are in the works to revive the Cowboys & Rednecks (C&R) concept—this time in Towson. C&R is expected to open on the first floor of the mixed-use Towson Commons development along York Road in the coming months. The spot will join other restaurant tenants including Brown Rice Korean Grill and a yet-to-open Insomnia Cookies. Here’s hoping the bar brings back its signature barbecue fare, Southern soundtrack, and life-sized Jenga. 1 W. Pennsylvania Ave., Towson

Dutch Courage: Veteran bartenders Brendan Dorr and Eric Fooy are opening this gin bar in Old Goucher next year. The spot—whose name refers to the confidence that 17th century British soldiers would gain after drinking Hollands gin—will offer a list of classic cocktails, as well as an array of rotating options. The space will feature a main bar, relaxing parlor room, and its own lush courtyard outside. 2220 N. Charles St.

SOUTH BALTIMORE BEAT

Baltimore Soup Company: This Towson-based cafe will be bringing its hearty soups to Federal Hill just in time for the winter weather. A second location of Baltimore Soup Company is expected to join Minnow on the bottom floor of the 2 East Wells apartment complex within the next six weeks. As its name suggests, the cafe emphasizes its soups (think chicken and rice, hearty vegetable, and Maryland crab), but also offers a variety of salads and sandwiches to satisfy hunger pangs. 2 E. Wells St.

Hair of the Dog Pub & Grub: The blue and white mural that formerly advertised No Idea Tavern on the brick facade of 1649 South Hanover Street in Federal Hill will soon have a new logo. No Idea owners Jon Ferguson and Stacy Lynch recently launched this new concept, which features a fresh menu by chef Kenya Butler. Among the new dishes are additional quesadillas, salads, and signature sandwiches like the “Dogwood” with roast beef, turkey, and Applewood smoked bacon. The neighborhood spot will maintain its sports bar feel, boasting nightly specials and 20 screens. 1649 S. Hanover St., 410-814-0342

Diablo Doughnuts: This fan-favorite Fells Point shop will be peddling its colorful confections across the harbor next year. Diablo Doughnuts—which currently shares its Broadway Square shop with pizzeria Hot Tomatoes—is moving into its own digs in the Federal Hill space that formerly occupied Felici Cafe on Light Street. Expected to debut in January, the larger space will make way for owner Michael Roslan to expand his hours (Hot Tomatoes operates in the current space during the evenings), as well as his menu. But—not to worry—the signature s’mores, maple-bacon, and cereal-crusted “Unicorn Farts” donuts will remain staples. 1035 Light St.

Sundays: In other donut news, this offshoot of Mt. Vernon mainstay Dooby’s will be debuting inside Cross Street Market later this month. The stall will feature breakfast sandwiches, as well as its signature brioche and cake donuts in fun flavors including French toast, strawberry shortcake, matcha green tea, and honey oat goat cheese. Sundays will join other pop-ups including Cockeysville barbecue joint Smoke, D.C-based soup purveyor Prescription Chicken, yogurt parfait producer Gertie’s Yummy Yogurt Bowls, and regional chain Cookie Dough & Co. in the market—which is in the midst of a multi-million dollar redesign by local developer Caves Valley Partners. All merchants will remain open throughout construction, which is slated to be completed by 2019. 1065 S. Charles St.

VETERAN’S DAY OBSERVANCES

11/11: Mission BBQ

In keeping with its patriotic mantra (each location stands to recite the pledge of allegiance at noon daily), this beloved barbecue chain will honor all local veterans and active military duty personnel with free sandwiches and cake on November 11. All locations, scattered everywhere from Canton to Owings Mills, will be participating. Multiple locations including 3701 Boston St., 443-955-6807.

11/11-18: Feeding the Homeless: A Veteran’s Day Tribute and Thanksgiving Dinner

Now in its fourth year, this community gathering has grown into a two-day event. On November 11 and November 18, locals will gather to feed more than 1,000 of the city’s displaced citizens in honor of Veteran’s Day and Thanksgiving. In order to produce the home-cooked meal, organizers are collecting contributed food, soft drinks, and serving supplies. Other donations that are needed include personal hygiene items, winter clothing, blankets, and coats. 420 Fallsway, 2 p.m.

CH-CH CHANGES

Grand Cru: On the heels of launching a rebrand at Remington hotspot Parts & Labor, Spike Gjerde’s restaurant group Foodshed has made the decision to sell Grand Cru. The team took over the Belvedere Square wine bar in 2014, after owner (and Gjerde’s business partner) Nelson Carey passed away suddenly. Now, the bar is in the process of being turned over to former Foodshed employee Jayce Flickinger. Foodshed managing partner Corey Polyoka recently told The Sun that the decision to sell the spot comes as the company focuses its attention on A Rake’s Progress, a new restaurant expected to open in the Adams-Morgan neighborhood of Washington, D.C. by the end of the year. 527 E. <p "="">COMING SOON

Sundays Bakehouse: It’s no secret that the doughnut trend is on the rise, and the team behind Dooby’s in Mt. Vernon will soon unveil a new shop to satisfy sweet tooth cravings. Before Sundays Bakehouse cuts the ribbon on the Avenue in Hampden later this month, pastry chef Courtney Fix—who previously worked at B. Doughnut and Cunningham’s—is taking her fluffy favorites on a pop-up tour around Charm City. At each stop, Fix will feature an off-menu pairing that meshes with the corresponding host (think doughnuts paired with cocktails at Rye on April 6, sausage-filled options at Snake Hill on April 13, and Japanese-inspired varieties to highlight the new brunch menu at Peko Peko Ramen on April 16.) The doughnuts will also be featured at Dooby’s Wednesday through Sunday leading up to the grand opening date, which will be announced in the coming weeks. 802 N. Charles St., 410-609-3162

Iron Rooster: The adjoining properties that formerly operated as The Greene Turtle and Piaza Fresh at McHenry Row in Locust Point will soon house this beloved breakfast-all-day spot. Iron Rooster, which debuted in Annapolis three years ago and quickly expanded with locations in Canton and Hunt Valley, is expected to open its fourth location in the 20-acre mixed-use development this summer. The restaurant’s menu highlighting house-made pop tarts, chicken and waffles, farm-to fork burgers, and colorful salads, will carry over into the new space—which neighbors other local eateries Samos Greek Island Grille and Ruby 8 Noodles & Sushi. 1606 Whetstone Way

LB Skybar: Though it might not seem like it today, rooftop deck season is officially upon us and the Lord Baltimore Hotel is gearing up to reopen its 19-story-high patio on April 21. The swanky space showcases lounge furniture, sweeping skyline views, and occasional live music and DJ entertainment. Plus, the bar will be home to a new menu of seasonal bites (think shrimp salad sliders and charcuterie plates) and cocktails including a classic mint julep and the “Harbor Breeze,” fusing vodka, pineapple juice, and passionfruit juice. 20 W. Baltimore St., 855-539-1928

OPEN

Greenmount Coffee Lab: Last month, Open Works—the new 34,000-square-foot incubator space for local artists in Station North—welcomed this new cafe from the worker-owned cooperative behind Red Emma’s Bookstore. The eatery is now officially open to the public, offering a full coffee and tea bar paired with vegan pastries, locally sourced salads, and other light snacks. In keeping with Open Works’ mission to support the local maker movement, the space is also equipped with its own roasting facility, which will help further operations for the collective’s wholesale business Thread Coffee. 1400 Greenmount Ave.,

JBee’s Jamaican Me Crazy: Remington’s new communal food hall R. House has put its designated pop-up stall to good use lately, hosting vendors ranging from D.C.-based soup purveyor Prescription Chicken to an Asian fusion concept from the dudes behind Ekiben in Fells Point. Now, R. House is adding Jamaican fare to its list of options, as this local food truck settles in the stall until April 16. Foodies are invited to sample dishes including chicken curry, Jamaican jerk chicken, and jerk fish platters over rice while strolling around the modern food hub. 301 W. 29th St.

Philly Pretzel Factory: Charm City locals no longer have to trek to up north to snack on authentic soft pretzels, thanks to this new eatery that recently landed in Harborplace’s Light Street Pavilion. The first Baltimore location of the Philadelphia-based chain peddles varieties like cinnamon pretzel twists and bite-sized nuggets, as well as specialty items such as pretzel-wrapped hot dogs and pretzel-stuffed cheesesteaks. Plans to expand throughout the area with other locations in Bel Air and White Marsh are in the works. 301 Light St., Ste. 626, 410-230-0063

CH-CH CHANGES:

Holy Crepe Cafe: Under new ownership, this Canton Square destination now offers late-night hours and additional menu items. Since taking over the business last year, recent UMBC graduate Matthew Berry has gotten to work expanding the shop’s offerings to include crepe flavors like pizza, buffalo chicken, and black bean burger, as well as sweet options like s’mores and the “Reese’s Witherspoon.” The multi-level BYOB spot, which also focuses on high-end coffees, is now open from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. on weekends to cater to Canton’s late-night crowd. 2929 O’Donnell St., 443-438-5510

EPICUREAN EVENTS

April in Paris: Gather with friends and neighbors at this annual outdoor event hosted by Petit Louis Bistro in Roland Park. The springtime festival in the parking lot out front features live music, an all-inclusive brunch menu, requisite glasses of wine, and even its own Eiffel Tower perfect for snapping pictures. 4800 Roland Ave., 410-366-9393, $29-49

Hello Kitty Cafe Truck: Fans of pop-culture phenomenon Hello Kitty will be excited to hear that the franchise’s food truck will be popping up at The Avenue in White Marsh next weekend. Head to the parking lot in between AMC Theatres and Barnes and Noble on Saturday, April 15 to enjoy treats including cookies, macarons, and mini cakes. The truck also sells goodies like mugs, tee-shirts, and the cat cartoon’s signature pink bow headband. 8125 Honeygo Blvd., White Marsh

SHUT

Camden Pub: Opening Day didn’t feel the same without this Ridgley’s Delight staple, which quietly shuttered its doors in February after more than 25 years in business. Second-generation owner Pat Liberto told The Sun that a decline in revenue, especially after the Baltimore Uprising in 2015, led to his decision to close. Regulars have been taking to social media to lament the loss of the sports bar, which was best known for its game-day watch parties, karaoke nights, and signature pub grub. 647 W. Pratt St.

Two Boots Pizza: This funky pizza parlor named after the geographical shapes of Italy and Louisiana closed its doors on Mt. Royal Avenue in Midtown last weekend. A sign posted to the front door announced the closure, though the reasons behind the decision still remain unclear. “We’ve had a great six years at this location and it’s been a true joy to feed the MICA, UB, Bolton Hill and Mount Vernon communities,” the sign reads. The restaurant has long been a favorite for students and locals alike to enjoy inventive vegan pizzas named after pop culture icons. Though management considered expanding with a location on the bottom-floor of a student-housing residence near Johns Hopkins Hospital last summer, that project never came to fruition. 1203 W. Mt. Royal Ave.
