Remington is all the rage these days, what with eateries like Parts & Labor and Clavel, drinkeries like W.C. Harlan and Ottobar, and up-and-coming attractions like the food-hall mecca R. House. This weekend, at the latter, get to know the burgeoning neighborhood and Baltimore’s booming food scene during the second annual Remington Chop. If you’re ready to learn, participate in food workshops like sausage making with Maggie’s Farm, oyster shucking with Dylan’s Oyster Cellar, and broth brewing with Ejji Ramen, as well as drink workshops like beer tasting with Union Craft and juice pressing with Urban Pastoral. If you’re feeling lazy, on the other hand (we’re not ones to judge), lounge in the beer garden with bibimbap by Bebim, small bites by Charmington’s, and brick-oven slices by Pizza di Joey. All the while, listen to live music by rock-and-soul quartet The Lushpockets, psych-rockers Hollywood Blanks, and new Baltimore favorite, Surf Harp.

It’s been a
beautiful week, leading to long walks along the waterfront, lots of outdoor
grilling, and one-too-many rosés. But Friday is finally upon us, so start the
weekend early with an al
fresco happy hour in the heart of downtown. At this monthly event, bring
friends, coworkers, and significant others for beers by Calvert Brewing Company,
wine by Linganore Winecellars, pizza by Brick N Fire, live music by reggae-rock
fusion group Fiction 20 Down, and lawn games like corn hole and ping pong.
Watch the sunset with Wye Ryes and Route 4 IPAs and then scramble off into city
to make the most of your summer night.

’Tis the weekend to don your cat’s-eye glasses, douse your mane in hairspray, and decorate your elbows with feather boas for the 23rd annual HonFest. For two days, the streets of Hampden will celebrate the city’s historic workingwomen in true Bawlmer fashion with a colorful block party full of food and festivities. See the Boys of Hampden centerfolds get dropped into a dunk tank. Watch our local oyster aficionados go at it in a shucking competition. Admire all the beehives at the annual “Best Hon” pageant. And best of all, wander the neighborhood and revel in this Charm City tradition, however wonderful and weird.

Beyoncé is the queen bee of pop culture, with five platinum records, 20 Grammys, and her own HBO documentary, plus flawless fashion, kickass choreography, and once-in-a-lifetime concert tours. (Not to mention her much talked about marriage to hip-hop royalty, Jay Z.) Over the years, she has brought us such seminal smash-hits as “Say My Name,” “Drunk in Love,” and “Single Ladies,” and this past winter she released her first new single in three years, “Formation,” which instantly skyrocketed to the top of the charts. It also sparked BeyHive hysteria for her latest album, Lemonade, which set the internet on fire when it suddenly dropped this spring. For one Friday night, see what all the buzz is about as the living legend brings down the house on our very own Ravens turf.

For one Sunday in
June, get to know Baltimore better by biking through its beautiful parks. Now in its 14
year, this two-wheeled tour takes you through one of four routes, from a leisurely
5K around Druid Hill Park to a 56K that encompasses Patterson, Gwynn Falls,
Cold Spring, Clifton, and Herring Run. Whether you opt for a difficult trek or
family-friendly cruise, enjoy the ride and its afternoon after-party, with a
picnic lunch, live music, and lovable rescue puppies, all to benefit
Baltimore’s beautiful outdoor spaces.

<p "="">With one-of-a-kind concepts like Clavel and Parts & Labor on the rise, and a highly anticipated communal food hall coming soon, Remington’s dining scene is seeing serious growth.

Last summer, in an effort to highlight the community’s creativity, a group of young entrepreneurs established The Remington Chop—a foodie event that combines a pop-up beer garden with interactive workshops led by local chefs and brewers.

Now celebrating its second year, the get-together is returning on Saturday, June 11 from 12-5 p.m., introducing additional seminars and a live music lineup. This summer, the food fest is moving to R. House, the W. 29th Street incubator space that will house 10 micro-restaurants when it officially opens this fall.

The Remington Chop is the brainchild of Peter DiPrinzio, who is an alumnus of Venture for America (VFA)—a national organization that sends college graduates to different cities to work for budding startups. This year, DiPrinzio passed the torch to a new wave of local VFA fellows, including Jamie Norwood who works for Hungry Harvest.

“[DiPrinzio] started the event with the goal of celebrating chefs and makers in Baltimore,” says Norwood, a Montgomery County native, “and having a day where people with shared interests in the community can come together.”

The new organizers are focused on maintaining that mission, while also implementing some upgrades this time around.

The list of hour-long workshops, for example, has doubled in size, including classes on lamb butchery led by George Marsh of Parts & Labor, the history of mezcal with Clavel owner Lane Harlan, pasta and ricotta making with chef Ben Sawyer of Fork & Wrench, fish cleaning and crudo prep with Bella Kline of Pen & Quill, ramen making with Ejji Ramen, and hydroponic farming and juice pressing with Urban Pastoral, one of R. House’s newest tenants.

Fittingly, other soon-to-be R. House inhabitants BeBim and Stall 11 will also be included in the event, peddling Korean rice bowls and vegetarian hummus wraps in its outdoor beer garden.

“Having it there is so great because R. House and The Remington Chop are essentially celebrating the same things,” Norwood says. “They’re putting Baltimore chefs in the spotlight and getting more people involved in the food community.”

Before and after attending their chosen workshop, guests are encouraged to hang out in the beer garden to peruse summer-inspired eats and drinks such as blackberry mojito ice pops from Pop Couture, cold soups and salsas from Big Bean Theory, and beverages from Union Craft Brewing and Charm City Meadworks.

The festival will also boast live music performances for the first time this year, with a lineup—featuring The Lushpockets, Surf Harp, and Hollywood Blanks—hand-picked by the team at The Ottobar.

The $45 price of admission includes three drink tickets and access to a workshop of your choice. Beer garden-only tickets are $25.

Norwood says that, while expansions to other neighborhoods are definitely possible in the long-run, the organizers are excited to focus on the rise of Remington for now.

“There are so many great things happening there,” she says. “It’s already such a fun area, and with R. House opening soon everything’s just going to snowball.”

Peter DiPrinzio and his friends wanted to organize a food event in Baltimore—a way to educate the general public on the creative endeavors of chefs in each neighborhood. But, they thought, how do we make it more fun?

Of course, stick it inside a beer garden.

Thus, The Remington Chop was born.

Taking place in Miller’s Court, a Seawall development on the corner of Howard and 26th Street, the June 13 event will feature six interactive workshops throughout the day led by top chefs and brewmasters from around and near the Remington neighborhood. All the while, a beer garden with food and brews will be going on in the other part of the courtyard. From 12-5 p.m., guests can meander back and forth between the two.

“The idea is to create an atmosphere that’s fun and also that gives you the learning component,” says DiPrinzio, one of the event’s four organizers. “It’s kind of like choose your own adventure.”

And there will be plenty to choose from as the hour-long workshops include a lamb butchery class with Geroge Marsh of Parts & Labor, an introduction to mezcal from Lane Harlan of W.C. Harlan and Clavel, a tutorial on rustic gazpacho from Dave Sherman of Café Cito, an oyster shucking workshop from Dylan Salmon of Dylan’s Oyster Cellar, sausage making from Pen & Quill, and the art of craft brewing from Monument City Brewing Company.

“These chefs and brewers know their product and specialty better than anyone, so we just let them do whatever they wanted with the workshops,” DiPrizino says. “But we also encouraged them to have fun—for example Dylan is kicking it up a notch with champagne pairings at the end of his.”

The beer garden, of course, will encourage fun too, by offering roast pork tacos from Parts & Labor and Clavel, oysters from Dylan’s, and brews (including a brand new IPA) from Monument.

One $45 ticket will include a guest’s choice of workshop, two beers, and access to the beer garden all afternoon. Food is pay as you go. Each workshop is going to be capped at 30 people, in order to guarantee an intimate experience.

DiPrinzio’s hope is to replicate this idea in future neighborhoods—Federal Hill Chop, Charles Village Chop, for example—on a likely seasonal basis.

“There are tons of folks that show an interest in food beyond just eating it,” he says. “If they want to get on a level deeper, like wondering why a certain cut of meat ends up on their plate, this is the event for them.”
