Baltimore is brimming with bright ideas and brilliant minds. Yes, the city faces challenges, but there is beauty in coming together to build solutions. One group is often overlooked in that effort—kids. Charm City’s young people have unique ideas about how to tackle those issues, and on April 14, a cohort of CHANGEmaking students will be awarded funding for their ideas at an event at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African-American History & Culture.

Philanthropy Tank Baltimore Executive Director Nakeia Jones says that each proposal is shaped by the student’s personal perspective on growing up in the city. “Every student’s project is different,” Jones says. “It depends on what their goals are.”

Founded in 2015 and brought to Baltimore in 2019, Philanthropy Tank asks students to identify the changes they’d like to see in their own communities—and then empowers them to become agents of that change. At a virtual event last year, the first cohort of CHANGEmakers pitched their projects to a panel of local investors, seeking grants of up to $15,000. This year, a second cohort of finalists, grades 8 through 12, will once again pitch projects in hopes of receiving funding, mentorship, and other critical support through Philanthropy Tank.

Among this year’s pitches spearheaded by Baltimore youth are an initiative to paint murals on abandoned buildings, bringing art and beauty to blighted neighborhoods; a community improvement closet, which will provide teens in under-resourced areas with clothes, toiletries, books, and other essentials; and a network of support for young people with incarcerated parents. Out of 48 applications, eight projects have made it this far. All of the finalists will receive some funding, but it’s up to the dynamic Philanthropist Mentors to decide whether to grant their requests in part or in full.

Jones emphasizes that bringing students together to build relationships with professional mentors is just as important as the money itself. “We want to empower them to be leaders, but first they need guidance on what that looks like,” she says. “We’re trying to create opportunities for students to learn transferable skills, stuff you can’t learn in the classroom.”

Take Samaya Nelson, a Saint Frances Academy ninth grader who will pitch her mural project at the finals event on April 17. She has already submitted a budget for materials, and will rely on funding and mentorship to help her scale up the initiative. The way Jones sees it, Nelson’s ambition to bring her talent as an artist and perspective as a young person to make change in the city can inspire new ways of thinking, not just in other young people but in all of Baltimore’s leaders.

“Change doesn’t have to be overcomplicated, the way adults sometimes think about it,” Jones says. “Just because a building is abandoned, doesn’t mean it has to look abandoned.”

Anyone can play a part in fostering leadership and development skills in Baltimore’s kids. Whether it’s partnering with other youth-based organizations across the city, securing funding for future cohorts of CHANGEmakers, or seeking new avenues to bring their ideas to life, Philanthropy Tank wants your help in bringing Baltimore’s young people the resources they need to execute their ideas..

Overall, the goal is for Philanthropy Tank to loop young people back into the conversation about seeding initiatives that can change the course of development in our city and its youth. “There is so much strength in our students, and the kids in our city in general,” Jones says. “Support them, give them opportunities, and you never know what will come of it.”

If you want to support Philanthropy Tank, or know a student who would make a phenomenal CHANGEmaker, the finals event on April 17 is a great place to start—and you’re invited. Originally scheduled for February 17, the event was postponed due to the recent surge of COVID-19 cases, but is currently set to proceed in-person as planned.
Don’t be alarmed when you see the dome of City Hall illuminating red on Friday night. Baltimore is one of 130 landmarks in the U.S. and Canada to participate in a show of support for the sixth biennial Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) “roadblock” telecast airing on Friday, September 7. Each building will light up in a combination of SU2C’s signature colors—orange, red, yellow, gray, or white.

This year’s show is especially significant because it commemorates the organization’s 10-year anniversary of raising funds and awareness for cancer research.

“It really shows support and unity,” said Sung Poblete, president and CEO of SU2C. “It’s a visual connection. One in three Americans will be touched by cancer in their lifetime. This is one way of all of us standing together and fighting for those that we love.”

Since 2008, SU2C has been able to support more than 180 clinical trials with 1,500 scientists to help more than 12,000 cancer patients. The telecast is a way to secure a large number of funds for continuing research in the more than 180 medical institutions it works with—including Baltimore’s Johns Hopkins University.

Maryland resident Bob Siskind, who was diagnosed with stage one pancreatic cancer in 2017, is grateful for the work that SU2C has done. There was a study that was funded by the group that saw significant tumor reduction in patients with stage-four pancreatic cancer and decided to see how well it would work on someone less terminal. Siskind, who says this type of cancer runs in his family, agreed to try it out.

“They removed half my pancreas, my spleen, and the tumor,” he said. “Then I did the chemotherapy and the immunotherapy was the experimental trial that was supposed to hopefully prevent the cancer from coming back. I’m very optimistic. Funding like that doesn’t grow on trees and Stand Up To Cancer came through with the money to run the study and it enabled me to get well.”

Poblete says that cases like Siskind’s are the reason why the organization and this telecast are so important. Unlike typical grants that are specific to one scientist or institution, SU2C has no boundaries or borders for its scientists allowing them to work across multiple institutions.

“The brightest minds are not all at one institution,” Poblete said. “Having no boundaries to seek out the best ideas and having the best and the brightest work together, it’s a dream team approach.”

This year’s telecast will also feature a new pre-show digicast at 7 p.m. on YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter inviting people to join in the conversation online. The hour-long show will feature cancer survivors, celebrities, and exclusive access to some behind-the-scenes of the live show.

During the “one night to save lives,” Poblete hopes to raise a significant amount of money—no number was specified because she believes that any amount counts. She says she’s grateful and humbled by all of the support from each state participating in the illumination as well as all who donate to advance the research to find a cure for cancer.

“It’s about all of us coming together,” she said. “One-hundred percent of the funds raised go towards our innovative cancer research—to support brilliant scientists who can make these amazing discoveries. We hope to hit a big number this year and we’re keeping our fingers crossed.”

Sports fans might recognize Lisa Salters from NFL’s Monday Night Football talking with players like Joe Flacco and NBA games with Lebron James, but her humble beginnings can be traced back to Baltimore in the late 1980s where she got her start on WBAL-TV. After working in major markets and traveling the globe to cover everything from wars to economics, Salters decided to settle her family in Baltimore.

“I’m from King of Prussia and I wanted to be close to family, but not in Philly,” she said. “I’m really good friends with Jayne Miller and Jan Bledsoe, and they talked me into coming back to Baltimore.”

After reacquainting herself with Baltimore and her Fells Point neighborhood, Salters wanted to settle down here when adopting her son, who is now 5. As a mother, Salters says she’s honored to participate in this Thursday’s Sports Legends Series to benefit the Casey Cares Foundation, which raises money for critically ill children and their families.

She believes that sports have a “universal bond” that can bring people together no matter the background. “I love what I do, so it’s an easy thing to talk about,” she said. “People always want to hear about the athletes—what they’re like, are they jerks, are they nice? When I tell them, they’re all surprised, they’re normal people just like us.”

In past years, honored guests have included Bob Costas, Jim Palmer, Gary Williams, Brooks Robinson, Justin Tucker, and Matt Stover. This year, Salters will be joined by former Ravens coach Brian Billick, who led the Baltimore team to its first Super Bowl.

“With Lisa Salters and Brian Billick, we liked the idea of pairing a Monday Night Football reporter with a Super Bowl coach and having them swap stories from the sidelines of the NFL,” Amy Rosewater, director of communications for Casey Cares, said in an email. “We really like to make sports heroes more accessible for a fun and intimate evening.”

The philosophy of putting a more human face on the world of sports is something that Salters lives by and plans to share on Thursday night.

“It’s not so much about the sports, it’s about the doors that sports have opened for me,” she said. “I have been able to experience different cultures and ways of life and different people. I tell people all the time, it’s about the relationships we build. It could be a really great game, but what I’m going to take away, when I retire eventually, are the people that I’ve met and the relationships I’ve built more than the events.”

In the wake of the devastation caused by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma—which recently caused catastrophic flooding in Southeast Texas and the Florida Keys, respectively—the local food community has been doing its part to pitch in with various fundraisers and donation drives.

“We wanted to do whatever we could on whatever scale big or small,” says Jesse Sandlin, executive chef at The Outpost American Tavern in Federal Hill, which hosted a disaster relief brunch last weekend. “After Harvey, and with Irma coming through, it really hit me that this could be a major national disaster—potentially even bigger than Katrina because of the two hurricanes happening back to back.”

Sandlin is one of many local chefs who will be coming together at Fork & Wrench in Canton to participate in a monthly dinner series supporting the cause. At each event, new Fork & Wrench chef Corey Laub will battle it out with two other area chefs and a portion of all ticket sales will go to hurricane victims.

Columbia-born Laub—who only recently returned to the local dining scene after spending nearly a decade working in other cities like Chicago and Washington, D.C.—says that he, like Sandlin, had a willingness to help others in need.

“In this industry, we have a want to help people and make them happy however we can,” he says. “It all goes along with our hospitality drive.”

The inaugural competition on September 27 will pit Laub, Sandlin, and Chef Brian Lavin of Gnocco against each other. Each installment of the series will feature four courses (one from each of the chefs, followed by dessert), and diners will vote for their favorite dish after the final course. Proceeds will benefit the Austin Disaster Relief Network for the first dinner, and future installments will support victims in Florida.

Another unique element of the series is that each dinner will focus on a different local protein, with the first highlighting pork from Catoctin Mountain Farms in Frederick County. Although he is still perfecting his dish, Laub is eager to make use of the local hogs, as well as feature fall produce like squash and apples from area farms.

The monthly events continue with a battle showcasing beef on Wednesday, October 25, in which chef Corey will be up against chef Jason Ambrose of Salt Tavern in Upper Fells Point, and chef Andrew Weinzirl of The Brewer’s Art in Mt. Vernon. Rounding out the series will be a Thanksgiving-themed turkey competition between Laub, chef Jay Rohlfing of Cunningham’s in Towson, and chef David Thomas of Ida B’s Table—which officially opens downtown next week.

A former Top Chef contestant, Sandlin is certainly no stranger to the realm of chef competitions. But she says that, in this instance, she is most excited to be cooking amongst her peers.

“Even though it is a competition, we’re all friends,” she says. “We all want to encourage each other. We all have a lot of mutual admiration and respect for each other. When you don’t get to collaborate with other chefs on a day-to-day basis, it makes it fun.”

Rawlings Conservatory is hosting a “Cocktails at the Conservatory” fundraiser.

The Rawlings Conservatory in Druid Hill Park was established in 1888 and features several different climate-controlled rooms, where guests can learn about rare and interesting plants (usually all for free!)

But, at “Cocktails at the Conservatory,” you can take your knowledge even further. From 6:30-8:30 p.m., Fells Point’s Rye is mixing drinks that include flowers and plants that grow in the conservatory. Mixologists Doug Atwell and Ryan Sparks will also show guests how to use plant elements in the drinks they make at home.

Copies of The Drunken Botanist: The Plants that Create the World’s Great Drinks by Amy Stewart will also be on sale for those who want to know even more about how to mix botanicals and cocktails.

Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Three drink tickets are included in the price of entry. All money raised at this event will benefit the conservatory.

Here are some sales (and a few events) worth shopping now through next week.

Hurry over to Cross Keys for Ruth Shaw’s Designer Sale and save up to 70 percent off the store’s select designer items.

Next door, enjoy Jones and Jones’ three-day in-store Carol Peretz
trunk show. This New-York based line is known for its signature bridal
collection, as well as its cocktail-attire and other special occasion
pieces. Stop by the store from today through Friday, March 14.

It’s not too late to enjoy major savings at Green Spring Station. Now through this Friday, March 14, shop the end of Bare Necessities’
two-week long 29th Anniversary Sale which will afford you 20 percent
off all items storewide, and even more generous, 30 percent off all
sleepwear.

After debuting the fundraiser last September, the shopping center and the Junior League of Baltimore will team up yet again to host another Passport to Baltimore
shopping event. For just $20 (reduced from last year’s price!), your
shopping card will grant you access to the remaining days of the
original ten-day period of special savings at Green Spring’s
participating stores (ending Sunday, March 16), as well as to the full
ten-day period at participating restaurants (from Friday, May 16 until
Sunday, May 25). All proceeds benefit the Junior League of Baltimore’s
dedicated fight to helping local women, fighting child obesity and
improving the general welfare of the community.

Bare Necessities isn’t the only store celebrating an anniversary—Lingerie Lingerie
is turning 24! And to kick off the celebration, the store will offer a
25 percent storewide discount this Friday only, followed by a 20 percent
storewide discount throughout the rest of the week-long sale.

Over at the Shops at Kenilworth, the Bead has discounted all tops—saving you 20 percent on each—until Saturday, March 22.

After shopping, relax at About Faces. From now through Monday, March 31, purchase five of the same salon and spa services and save 15 percent on your total.

Finally, skip the Sunday blues and end your week at this year’s Emerging Awards & Fashion Show!

	As
the name suggests, EMERGE will be held in celebration of emerging power
players in the fashion world. Host Ava Marie (WBAL TV-11) will honor a
total of eleven publicly nominated candidates.

But first, sip and shop upon arriving at the Lord Baltimore Hotel before the award ceremony begins.

Purchase your tickets in advance for just $25 general admission (VIP seating is sold out).

Tonight local bars and restaurants will be doing their part for the
community by donating a portion of their proceeds to Jon Fogg, a sports
editor at The Sun, who was robbed and assaulted in the neighborhood last month.

The “Count on Canton” event was organized by Stephanie Moore and Jasmine Touton, creators of neighborhood blog Stay Classy Canton.
This fundraiser was a “natural extension” of last summer’s Stoop
Nights, which were meant to encourage neighborhood familiarity and
fellowship, Grocott said.

“Canton was shocked when Jon Fogg was so
brutally attacked and, through our participation in online communities,
we realized that neighbors needed a way to collectively acknowledge the
injustice, support Fogg, and move forward,” she said. “We wanted to be
the voice for that effort and decided to spearhead getting local
businesses involved. The Canton community is full of passionate and
caring people who want to look out for each other.”

“Count on
Canton” is encouraging residents to leave their porch lights on, gather
together, and visit one of the participating locations to help Jon Fogg
and his family.

Just some examples of tonight’s specials include Smaltimore offering a free sushi roll with the purchase of a bottle of wine, Shiso Tavern offering $15 fishbowls all night, Sauté featuring a burger and a beer for $10, and Nacho Mama’s boasting $1 off margaritas all night. Those going out with their kids might want to stop by Verde, where children under 10 can get a free Margherita pizza.

See Stay Classy Canton’s blog for a complete list of participating bars and restaurants, and if you can’t make it out tonight, you can donate to Fogg’s recovery fund.
