(RE)OPEN

Bmore Licks: As temperatures continue to climb this week, locals are hyped that this Patterson Park scoop shop has made its return for the season. Bmore Licks started its fourth year out strong by giving away free soft-serve cones to customers earlier this week. (With plenty of no-additional-charge rainbow sprinkles, of course.) Now, the dessert destination is officially back in action with all of its fan-favorite treats including homemade hard ice cream, snowballs, sundaes, milkshakes, and even ice cream tacos and nachos made with waffle cones. Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day this month with the “Magically Delicious” flavor that mixes in Lucky Charms marshmallows.

COMING SOON

The Gourmet: Catonsville Gourmet owners Craig and Cristina Rinkerman have been serving up the restaurant’s specialty seafood, sushi, and prime cuts of meat to the community for the past 12 years. Come fall, they will expand their reach to Towson with a second location at The Shops at Kenilworth. Located in the mall’s new expansion alongside the forthcoming Felipe’s Mexican Taqueria, the 5,450-square-foot sister-spot will boast a large dining room, a separate raw bar and lounge, and an outdoor patio that can accommodate more than 180 people. Much like the flagship, The Gourmet will offer a comfortable setting highlighting fresh fish, oysters, steaks, and signature cocktails.

BEER BULLETIN

DuClaw and Wockenfuss to Launch “PastryArchy Carmallow”: We love it when two Baltimore food-and-drink brands join forces—and that’s exactly what DuClaw Brewing Co. and 104-year-old Charm City staple Wockenfuss Candies are doing later this month. Just in time for Easter, DuClaw will launch the cleverly named “PastryArchy Carmallow”—an 8.5-percent ABV imperial stout made with 100 pounds of caramel and marshmallows. The idea, of course, is for the beer to mimic the flavor profile of Wokenfuss’ famous Carmallow candies. As Wockenfuss candy manufacturing manager Greg Butler points out: “There are a lot of similarities between candy-making and brewing. It’ll be fun to taste the final result.” The beer is expected to hit taps and shelves in Maryland and all of DuClaw’s territories by late March.

Key Brewing and RoFo Release Cold Rolled Breakfast Stout: Speaking of collaborations with iconic Baltimore brands, Dundalk’s Key Brewing Co. is celebrating the official release of its new stout made with Royal Farms’ Colombian coffee at a launch party at Five & Dime Ale House tonight. The breakfast beer clocks in at a 5.5 percent ABV and hits shelves at local liquor stores this week.

Suspended Brewing Turns Two: Pigtown’s neighborhood brewery known for its sustainable focus is pulling out all of the stops to ring in its two-year anniversary this weekend. The festivities kick off with Baltimore trivia and eats by Ekiben on Thursday night, followed by Filipino fare from the Masarap pop-up and draft cocktails Friday, more draft cocktails and steamed buns by Ekiben Saturday, and a Sunday afternoon drag brunch. Swing by the community hangout to down some of its signature pints while enjoying all of the fun.

SHUT

Gordon Biersch: Happy hours in Harbor East won’t be the same now that this brewpub has closed its doors for good. A sign posted to the front door earlier this week thanked diners for seven years of patronage, and confirmed that the spot had closed for good on March 1. Though the Annapolis location remains open, the chain restaurant closed many of its regional restaurants—including one in Rockville and one in Washington, D.C.—after parent company CraftWorks Holdings filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this week. There’s no word yet on what will become of the abandoned space, which is equipped with brewing tanks and a large patio overlooking Lancaster Street.

May 17: Masarap Pop-up at Suspended Brewing Company

Suspended Brewing Company, 912 Washington Blvd. 5-9 p.m. Free.

If you didn’t get the chance to try local chef Rey Eugenio’s top-notch Filipino eats during his pop-up concept’s stint at Fadensonnen or Greener Fest, head to Pigtown this Friday to sample everything on this entirely plant-based menu. From Masarap staples like charred Brussels sprouts and Filipino-style stir-fry noodles to roasted corn and oyster dumplings, this vegan lineup pairs perfectly with a few of the South Baltimore brewery’s signature pours. And, since one dollar from each pint supports the next Charm City Night Market, there’s no shame in snacking and boozing all night long.

Max’s Taphouse, 737 S. Broadway. 11-2 a.m. Free.

Outdoor beer festivals may be all the rage, but there’s something about walking into Max’s Taphouse and seeing 90 taps (yes, you read that correctly) full of Maryland beer that can’t be beat. This Friday, start early and work your way through beers by more than 40 local breweries, including Charm City favorites like Heavy Seas and Diamondback as well as newcomers like Nepenthe and Mobtown Brewing. Whether you spend the day sampling new brews or sticking to your go-to guarantees, we recommend ordering some nachos or tater tots every few rounds to soak up the suds.

The Baltimore Museum of Art, 10 Art Museum Dr. Wed.-Sun. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Free.

If you do nothing else this spring, visit the Baltimore Museum of Art to experience this awe-inspiring exhibition that celebrates the profound work of MacArthur-award winning local artist Joyce J. Scott and her mother, Elizabeth Talford Scott. The curated collection features Talford Scott’s experimental textile pieces, including a quilt that depicts the North Star as a matriarchal beacon of freedom, along with examples of Scott’s art that responds to her mother’s textile tradition. The exhibition’s seven-month run encourages visitors to view the pair’s thought-provoking bodies of work again and again.

The Charmery Ice Cream Factory, 1700 W. 41st St., Suite 400. 8-11:45 p.m. $10.

We agree with Micah E. Wood: If having your own ice cream flavor at your self-titled album release party isn’t the ultimate flex, we don’t know what is. Pack The Charmery Ice Cream Factory on Friday night to hear this beloved local musician and photographer perform bare-it-all songs from his third record, as well as sets by indie-pop quintet Super City, pop-opera duo Outcalls, rapper Al Rogers Jr., and DJ Loc Spice. Grab a complimentary scoop of the singer-songwriter’s signature flavor (ginger-lemon-coconut) and bop along to brand-new tracks dedicated to introspection, self-care, and—of course—his dog, Ansel.

Pimlico Race Course, 5201 Park Heights Ave. 9 a.m. $99-720.

After months of debates and hearings about the future of the iconic Preakness Stakes, this weekend’s events will be the first time in a while that the focus will be on the actual horse race, not the political one surrounding its potential move to Laurel Park. On Saturday, start the festivities early at the ever-raucous InfieldFest, featuring the likes of EDM star Kygo, popular rapper Logic, and DJ/producer Diplo, before heading to the track for the main event. Above all else, revel in the chance to cheer on the middle jewel of the Triple Crown for what could be one of the final times at Pimlico Race Course.

NEWS

B. Doughnut: The local doughnut scene has taken diners on a bit of a rollercoaster ride lately. A number of beloved bakeshops have opened, closed, popped-up, and switched locations more times than we can count. And when this Hampden favorite—famous for its signature everything bagel-doughnut hybrid—moved to Leesburg, Virginia in 2016, foodies certainly felt the loss. But now, owners Brian and Pin Chanthapanya are bringing back their fan-favorite flavors for a recurring weekend pop-up inside Mount Vernon Marketplace. Pinch Dumplings will offer the doughnuts every Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. until sellout. Aside from the savory bagel varieties, be on the lookout for sweet flavors including vanilla bean, lemon curd, coconut-glazed, and the “Homer”—named after the famous cartoon patriarch and dipped in pink glaze with rainbow sprinkles. Pinch Dumplings, 520 Park Ave., 667-309-3445.

Häagen Dazs: This week’s abnormal spike in temperatures had everyone jonesin’ for an ice cream cone. But, for now, Harbor East diners will have to look elsewhere, as this token dessert destination in the neighborhood is currently closed for renovations. Atlas Restaurant Group is overseeing a complete redesign of the shop, whose original decor is more than a decade old. The management team plans for the revamp to reflect the advancements of the Harbor East community, and expects the store to reopen in mid-April—just in time for more warm weather. 685 S.
Three New Dining Concepts Land at BWI: Baltimore Washington Thurgood-Marshall International Airport has seriously upped its food game lately. And this month, three new eateries have joined the many local spinoffs and enticing chains that the airport has to offer. Travelers can now chow down on Mexican street cuisine at La Carnita on Concourse D, soft-serve ice cream and sweet breakfast treats at Sweet Jesus on Concourse C, and classic burgers and shakes at Urban Burger at the Main Terminal. 410-859-7111.

COMING SOON

Noona’s: Husband-and-wife duo Phil and Jennifer Han—who own Dooby’s and Sugarvale in Mt. Vernon and Sundays in Federal Hill—have plans to expand their Charm City footprint with a pizzeria in Midtown near the University of Baltimore campus later this year. According to liquor board documents, the spot inside The Fitzgerald Building is expected to serve an array of pizzas, sandwiches, and small plates accompanied by cocktails and local beer. Stay tuned for more details. 1203 W. Mt. Royal Ave.

Suspended Brewing: After a successful liquor board hearing last week, this highly anticipated Pigtown brewery has finally set a grand opening date for Saturday, March 3. The brand’s sustainable mindset will shine through with elements like repurposed furniture and ecologically conscious brewing equipment. Head to the taproom on opening day to sample unique releases including the New England-style Dirty Washes IPA, and Sour Persian conditioned with Iranian barberries. 912 Washington Blvd.

Luckily, owner Geoffrey Danek was able to bounce back and reopen the restaurant a few months ago—but he never really got a chance to celebrate. Now, the team is officially toasting the redesigned space with an all-day bash featuring $3 Mexican drafts, hourly food and drink deals, a tequila wheel of speicals, live music by The Busted Boots and DJ Pancakes, and, of course, plenty of Pinball machines. The party just so happens to coincide with National Margarita Day, which means there will also be $2 margs poured at the bar all day long. 908 W. 36th St., 11 a.m., 410-235-2326

If you haven’t experienced this modern soul food yet, make it a New Year’s resolution and find yourself there for a special Sunday feast. Ring in 2018 with a four-course dinner by chef David Thomas plus live music by local soul singer Ama Chandra to boot. Each plate on the menu is inspired by African-American history and traditions, including the re-envisioned “chicken” and waffles, black bass with black-eyed peas, and grilled rack of lamb with spoon-bread masala. Just be sure to leave some room for Ida B’s fantastic desserts, like scratch-made sweet potato cheesecake with a champagne toast.

This New Year’s Eve, say goodbye to another crazy year with some much-needed, unfiltered humor from this irreverant British comedian. We were as surprised as anyone when John Oliver became one of America’s most beloved nighttime talk show hosts after cutting his comedic chops as one of Jon Stewart’s foreign correspondents on The Daily Show. But his brainy, sometimes cantankerous brand of comedic news has become a household favorite thanks to his half-hour HBO show, Last Week Tonight. With two back-to-back shows at the Hippodrome this New Year’s Eve, allow this beloved Brit’s charming wit and candid commentary send 2017 off with a bellyaching bang.

In early October, heartbroken fans and fellow musicians mourned the loss of Tom Petty, one of the greatest singer-songwriters and guitarists of all time. Known as a mainstay of rock-and-roll since the 1970s, Petty, with the help of his band, The Heartbreakers, has become a legendary icon with his masterful guitar skills, signature harmonica riffs, and insightful lyrics, evident in hit songs like “Free Fallin’,” “Mary Jane’s Last Dance,” and “I Won’t Back Down.” On Saturday, pay homage with a tribute concert featuring local musicians such as Jack Denning, Warren Boes, Keith Tuttle, Eric Dixon, and Steve Blake. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Grammy Foundation’s MusiCares Charity, who named Tom Petty their Person of the Year.

The New Year is just around the corner, but we’re not quite finished with the holiday season. After all, we’re only midway through Kwanzaa. This holiday is not limited to a religion but is rather an all-encompassing celebration of African-American culture, tradition, and heritage. On Saturday, learn about the seven-day holiday at Baltimore’s biggest Kwanzaa event featuring African-American dance, storytelling, workshops, and art at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum. Catch performances by the Sankofa Dance Theatre, listen to lectures by food nutritionist Tambra Raye Stevenson and genealogy expert Dr. Donna Hollie, and participate in a gallery walk with quilter Joan Gaither through her new exhibit, Freedom: Emancipation Quilted & Stitched. And don’t miss out on the traditional African marketplace where artisans will be showcasing unique crafts and handmade gifts.

In the current craft-beer climate, it seems like breweries are opening left and right these days, but the latest example plans to do things a bit differently.

Suspended Brewing Company—which was founded by UMBC classmates Josey Schwartz, Yasmin Karimian, Amir Karimian, and Stevo Karolenko—aims to rely on a model of self-distribution, brew unique and funky beer styles, and have everything in the brewery come from clean, renewable sources.

“A big thing for us is making sure we keep our waste and energy to a minimum,” explains Yasmin. “We want to combine our love for craft beer and the idea that businesses don’t need to be just concerned about the bottom line, but also it’s impact on people.”

The new brewery will open in a 3,000-square-foot space at 912 Washington Boulevard in Pigtown, a former church two doors down from the mixed-use apartment complex that will include Milk & Honey Market. As a Baltimore native, Karimian says the neighborhood fit right in with the company’s ethos.

“Walking down Washington, it’s just a good representation of the charm of Baltimore,” she said. “There’s a picturesque, beautiful community with all kinds of culture and history. We know it’s not Fells Point or Federal Hill, but we wanted to be part of a developing neighborhood. The first day we visited, we walked into every store and talked with business owners. They were all so in love with where they live.”

Another upside to Pigtown was the availability of the a Class 7 brewery license that allows for more on-site sales and self-distribution, plus the taproom isn’t limited to 10-percent of the space like other area breweries. Suspended’s system will be able to brew 20 kegs of beer at a time with the goal of producing 500 barrels of beer a year.

“We’re trying to create a community space and be able to serve our own beer,” Yasmin said. “This way, we can get real feedback from people and have those conversations over a drink. Hopefully, we’ll eventually find other bars with our same mindset and maybe they’ll want to have those conversations, too.”

Originally, Suspended was going to set up shop down in Rockville, but decided Baltimore was a better fit. Currently, they are brewing out of Rockville’s 7 Locks Brewery while the Pigtown space is under construction. Their first beer is a New England-style IPA called Dirty Wishes, and a spin off of that called Grit & Greatness: An Honors Ale will debut this Saturday at UMBC’s 50th anniversary celebration. Yasmin said they’re looking to brew more unique styles, like kettle sours and beer-mead hybrids.

“We love Baltimore beer culture as it is, but we’re hoping to bring some funkier beer to the scene,” she said. “This New England-style IPA is a little juicier and more drinkable than your typical IPA.”

To coincide with its model of sustainability, all of the brewery’s furniture will be repurposed and a lot of it will be built by Schwartz, who has a background in engineering and sustainability. Eventually, the brewery wants to install solar panels and hot water technologies, as well as encourage the use of growlers and crowlers over cans and bottles. Suspended wants to open its doors within the next six months.

“We are hoping to keep the historic character of the building,” Yasmin said. “We love how well it fits into the neighborhood. But we also want to add our own little Suspended charm.”
