Feb. 24: Taste Baltimore 3

The Motor House, 120 W. North Ave. 12-4 p.m. $20. 410-637-8300.

Three years ago, Chef Catina Smith of Magdalena Restaurant felt inspired by Baltimore’s small-batch food businesses and decided to create a mini food emporium to highlight local chefs and food professionals. Now in its third installment, Taste Baltimore is back with 15 food vendors, cooking demos by culinary instructor Chef Egg, and live music. Munch on samples from local favorites like The Elephant, new foodies like Wilde Thyme and Sporty Dog Creations, and watch chefs whip up tasty dishes with mystery ingredients in a Chopped-style competition.

DRINK

Feb. 24: The Big Lebowski Viewing and Costume Party

Waverly Brewing Company, 1625 Union Ave. 7 p.m. Free. 443-438-5765.

This weekend, the Dude abides in Hampden-Woodberry. On Saturday, the Waverly Brewing starts a new tradition with a screening of the 1998 cult classic comedy, The Big Lebowski. Prepare your one-liners and bowling references, then raid your closet for the perfect costume to channel your inner Dude, Donny, or Walter. Think bathrobes, amber-tinged sunglasses, and Viking helmets, as the best dressed guests can win bar tabs and brewery gift cards.

SEE

Feb. 23-25: American Craft Council Show

Baltimore Convention Center, 1 W. Pratt St. Fri. 10 a.m.-8 p.m., Sat. 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Sun. 11 a.m.-5 p.m. $14-34. 612-206-3100.

Take cover from the rain this weekend and surround yourself with all things bright and shiny. During this three-day indoor craft extravaganza, browse unique wares from more than 650 contemporary American artists, including Baltimore makers like Ronni Aronin’s ceramics, Tigerlillyshop’s fun jewelry, and Erin Draper’s yoga wear. While there’s enough handmade home décor, furniture, accessories, and toys to keep you entertained for hours, don’t miss out on specialty pop-up booths featuring wearable art, interior designs, hands-on activities, and even handcrafted whisky tastings.

Feb. 23: Surf Harp

The Windup Space, 12 W. North Ave. 8 p.m. $8. 410-244-8855.

When Surf Harp popped up on our radar back in 2016 with its first full-length album, Peel, we were immediately captivated by the vibrant, rollicking sound. This Friday, the indie quintet will release its second album, Mr. Big Picture, and perform the brand-new record—a rambunctious feat that channels the very best of ’80s New Wave and post-punk with a Damn The Man mentality— in its entirety with soon-to-be-favorites like “D.I. Cig” and “I Lost You.” Guest musicians will perform as well, including fellow local talents Chiffon and Jacober, as well as New York regulars Operator Music Band and Zula. Grab a 12-inch vinyl, featuring a snazzy screen-printed cover by illustrator George Wylesol, to listen on repeat.

Feb. 24: Black Tie Baltimore’s Fake Wedding

Baltimore Museum of Industry, 1415 Key Hwy. 7 p.m. $95-120. 410-727-4808.

Let’s skip the whole “I do” part and go straight to the reception. At this fake wedding to support the volunteer-and-day-drink nonprofit, Volunteer Untapped, don your best formal attire and spend a lively evening sipping drinks from the open bar, noshing on hors d’oeuvres by Sascha’s Catering, and grooving to live music from Moonshine. And of course, as always, this is all for a good cause, so don’t miss out on the Charity Tinder booth, where you can swipe right to meet local philanthropic partners and get involved with their efforts.

Milan may be the current host of Fashion Week with-a-capital-F, but the American Craft Council (ACC) is about to bring just as much style inspiration to Baltimore with its Style Slam program.

In its third year, Style Slam connects local fashion stylists with the ACC’s network of gifted creators, by challenging the stylists to piece together a fashion-forward look from wearable pieces, accessories, and jewelry, exhibited at the Baltimore Convention Center February 23-25.

For the fashion pros taking part in Style Slam, it’s an opportunity to connect with other creatives and to tackle a new challenge.

“To be able to talk to people and see what they do, how they do it, and why is really something special. You don’t really get to see so many artists at this level all in one place,” says Jason Tompkins one of the four stylists and influencers invited to participate, who has done work with local clients like Under Armour. “The artists are from all over, and they’re people who may not be represented by traditional retailers, so it’s more intimate.”

Stylists will each arrive with a model dressed in “base” layers—simple garments like jeans and a t-shirt— and then pull statement handmade pieces from stalls throughout the show. With a veritable treasure trove of wearable art to choose from, the convention will showcase artful accessories like jewelry, hats, and handbags.

“When you’re surrounded by things that clearly took care and talent to make, it’s easy to get inspired and to find something unique to pull from all of it,” says stylist and blogger Shae Li of Beautifully Together. “I’ve always had a fondness for textiles and how things are made. It’s just mind boggling that people can create such works of art with their hands.”

The ACC’s annual Baltimore show is its largest in the country, and that’s no surprise, given Baltimore’s notoriously eclectic style.

“Baltimore style is individualistic, and you can find people wearing any type of personal style here,” says Taylor Evans, whose blog Stylishly Taylored celebrates personal style. “With us stylists all being a microcosm of the city’s diverse style, I’m really interested to see how the other stylists’ creative minds work.”

The stylists’ final outfits will be exhibited on Saturday, February 24, in a pop-up space on the show floor, on live models as well as mannequins for the remainder of the day. ACC attendees can stop by the space to see those looks, and to talk with the stylists themselves about how to incorporate handmade statement pieces into their own wardrobes.

Sydney Paige, stylist and blogger at Coffee Stained Lace, is looking forward to connecting with fellow art lovers looking to introduce wearable art into their everyday lives.

“I hope I can be a resource for anyone looking to style the pieces they love, but aren’t quite sure how to execute them in an outfit,” she says. “I’m ready to inspire and be inspired.”

Hold onto your horses, or in this case, your
cows and pigs. On Saturday and Sunday, Spike Gjerde’s Remington meat mecca is
going ham with the introduction of its brand-new weekend brunch. Step up
your hangover cure or weekly splurge meal at this industrial auto-garage-turned-hipster-chic warehouse with its full feast of meats (steaks,
sausages, burgers, you name it), breakfast sandwiches (like the “Hot Brown,”
with gruyere béchamel, bacon, pickles, and parsley), and “restorative
fare” (we’ll take one pozole, please, with “rib fingers,” whatever that means, cilantro, radish, and a
side of sunny-side eggs). Food baby be damned, be sure to belly up at P&L pretty 24-tap bar for craft drafts and at least one artisanal
cocktail.

By now you’ve likely heard about the violent hit-and-run that took place two weeks ago at Dogwatch Tavern in Fells Point. The incident left the bar badly damaged and severely injured Jill Boram, the wife of the pub’s chef. The couple was exiting the building at the end of his shift as the car crashed came through the entrance, striking Boram, who is now recovering at the Johns Hopkins Hospital ICU from skull fractures and a broken hip, leg, and teeth. It was a dark day for the tavern, but now they’re coming together to thank the community for all of its positive support. The bar will be open for regular hours, and for a small donation, you can bring a dish or partake in a potluck buffet, have some drinks, and enter raffles, all to benefit Boram’s recovery.

Before there was TT The Artist and Abdu Ali, there was Rye Rye, who, in 2008, was one of the first to revive the homegrown, high-energy, breakbeat genre of Bmore Club, initially made famous in decades prior by DJ Scottie B and 92Q’s K-Swift. At the ripe age of 17, the artist’s vivacious style and confident sound led to Rolling Stone reviews, a spot on Billboard’s “21 under 21,” and collaborations with M.I.A., Robyn, and Diplo. Lately, the 25-year-old has been lying low, but this Saturday, you can catch her dance-party fire at the Creative Alliance, where she’ll be performing as part of the art space’s Resident Artist celebration, with open studio tours, two exhibitions, and an opening set by Baltimore beatboxer Shodekeh.

Feb. 19: 4 Hours of Funk

Guys. This weekend is going to be in the 50s. The 50s! That’s
spring. That’s practically summer. That’s anywhere but stuck in the middle of a
terribly cold February, having burned through all of Netflix and ready to set
your sweaters on fire. So get out of the house, grab your dancing shoes and
friends, and get over to Station North for a feel-good night at The Windup
Space’s monthly dance party. In honor of the recent passing of Earth, Wind
& Fire bandleader Maurice White, the DJs will be spinning a solid power
hour of songs by the 1970s funk collective—think “September,” “Let’s Groove,”
“Shining Star”—followed by another three of disco, boogie, and soul. It’s the
perfect way to shake your groove thing and get in the warm-weather spirit.
P.S.: Only 30 days ’til spring.

Explore approximately 200 recently acquired artworks, including decorative African hats, French sculptures, and American Gilded Age etchings in “Gifts of Art for a New Century,” as well as creations by accomplished locals like painter Raoul Middleman, auteur-cum-photographer John Waters, and Baltimore printmaker Gabrielle de Veaux Clements in “Maryland Artists.”

Not only is the brainchild of Laura Wexler, pictured right, and Jessica Henkin, left, turning 10 this year, but it’s also got new digs: the historic, 700-seat Senator Theatre. In honor of the Stoop reaching double digits, check out its upgraded space and reminisce on the awkward adventures of adolescence with a whole slew of fresh tales at this special anniversary show. Come early for cocktails and live music from the All Mighty Senators.

After a century, the BSO continues to move forward, melding classic orchestral works with new ventures like its contemporary Pulse concert series with WTMD. To honor the past and the future, conductor Marin Alsop joins superstar violinist Joshua Bell, pictured left, for a fresh take on music new and old. With an oeuvre as thick as Shakespeare’s, it says a lot that this 16th-century romantic-tragedy remains his most famous masterpiece, as the star-crossed play still pulls at the heartstrings of audiences across the globe. God only knows what pop music would be without the Beach Boys and their iconic, sun-kissed hits like “Surfin’ U.S.A.,” “I Get Around,” and “Wouldn’t It Be Nice.” Now, 50 years after the release of their seminal Pet Sounds album—and following decades of breakups and make-ups—the boys are back on the road. This time around, original bandmate and lead singer Mike Love hits the stage with vocalist/bassist Bruce Johnston, who joined the band in 1965 following Brian Wilson’s retirement from live performing.

During the 1940s, this Belgian-born guitarist toured with legends like Duke Ellington, revolutionized what it meant to be a solo jazz artist, and made “gypsy jazz” a household phrase. This month, celebrate the musician’s legacy with two music-filled nights at the Creative Alliance’s first-ever tribute festival, featuring the likes of Ultrafaux, a rip-roaring local gypsy swing group, and Stephane Wremble, who was recruited by Woody Allen to score his Oscar-winning 2011 film, Midnight in Paris.

A decade into their career, The Bridge had become a hometown favorite for their funky rock music, but like some of the greatest love stories, it didn’t work out, as the sextet was unable to sustain the taxing lifestyle. In the years that followed, frontman Cris Jacobs embarked on his own solo adventures while the band reunited here and there including, unfailingly, at its annual benefit concert for HopeWell Cancer Support, now 10 years strong.

This weekend the American Craft Council will return to Baltimore for its 38th annual show.

	Showcasing
more than 650 of the nation’s greatest artists, the event has been
recognized as the country’s largest juried indoor craft show. Just like
in years past, you’ll have the opportunity to browse and buy the
artists’ one-of-a-kind crafts—ranging from jewelry and apparel to
furniture and other home décor, while learning more about the production
process behind each handcrafted piece.

This year at the Baltimore Convention Center, you’ll also have the chance to explore one of the show’s newest collections: the American Craft Charm Collection.

	The
Charm Collection will be launched and available to the public for the
very first time, here in Baltimore. As the name suggests, the line will
include a variety of unique handmade charms, as well as charm bracelets,
pendants, and pins. ACC artists, including several local ones, have
contributed to the line, resulting in an array of eclectic styles and
materials (including precious and semi-precious stones), and a wide
range of price points. You’ll find pieces representing charming things
about Baltimore—black-eyed Susan flowers, orioles, raven feathers, and
Edgar Allen Poe.

Don’t miss your chance to get the exclusive
first look at the charms before the artists travel to their next stops
in Atlanta, St. Paul, and San Francisco. (Click
here for a preview of the jewelry.)

	On
Friday, the show will be held from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., on Saturday, from
10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and finally, on Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Buy tickets at the door ($16 for a one-day pass and $30 for a complete three-day pass) or in advance (here!) for less ($14 for one day and $28 for three).

ACC members and children under the age of 12 will be admitted free of charge.

When: Friday, February 21st through Sunday, February 23rd

Where: Baltimore Convention Center, 1 W. Pratt St.
