Now the founder of local studio Murals of Baltimore, Kirby has seen the Little Italy Baltimore Madonnari Arts Festival grow into a much-anticipated affair that draws thousands of onlookers to the neighborhood to watch local and international artists create pavement masterpieces. Kirby says the most important part of the festival (September 6-8) is that it brings both new and familiar faces to Baltimore. “People will visit on Friday to see what the artists are drawing and then come back again on Sunday to see the finished piece,” Kirby says. “Every day you come back, you see and experience something new.”—KP

Canton Waterfront Park, 3001 Boston Street. 12-7 p.m. Free-$105.

Even the impending Hurricane Florence can’t stop Marylanders from one last end-of-summer seafood feast. On Saturday, more than 35 area restaurants and food trucks will take over Canton Waterfront Park to serve up some of the best blue crabs, crab soup, crab cakes, and oysters the Old Line State has to offer. Spend the day checking off our list of must-have bites, jamming to live music by local favorites The Scotch Bonnets and Honey Extractor, and honoring the bounty of the bay from noon until sundown.

Baltimore Spirits Company, 1700 W. 41st St. 12-8 p.m. Free.

Since opening its doors in June, Union Collective has welcomed four local independent businesses into its booming makerspace, and this weekend, the Baltimore Spirits Company will add its award-winning spirits to the pack. Formerly the Baltimore Whiskey Company, this hometown distillery is celebrating its grand opening with an all-out party featuring drinks and eats from fellow tenants The Charmery, Vent Coffee Roasters, and Union Craft Brewing, as well as tunes by DJ Jack Denning of All Mighty Senators.
In an era when headlines are dominated by claims of “fake news,” Baltimore arts organizations Single Carrot Theatre and The Acme Corporation have collaborated on a project where everything that happens on stage is said to be a lie. This experimental production incorporates made-up ancient texts, falsified scientific data, and manipulated video evidence to present a wacky satirical portrait of Vladimir Putin in a performance that is sure to be one of this season’s don’t-miss events.

For the sixth edition of the collective’s concert series, guests are invited to grab a seat in the living room of a local home to hear the creative ensemble play a fusion of classical, soul, and rock music in an intimate setting.
There are so many things to love about the annual Baltimore Seafood Festival at Canton Waterfront Park. The end-of-summer tradition, which returns on Saturday, September 15 from 12-7 p.m., offers a blend of live music (this year’s headliners include local favorites The Scotch Bonnets and Honey Extractor), cooking demonstrations, crafters, and family-fun activities against the backdrop of the sparkling harbor. But, at the heart of the five-year-old fête is its wide array of seafood specialties.

With more than 35 area restaurants and food trucks participating this year, the event will have plenty of diverse dishes paying homage to the bounty of the Chesapeake Bay. Among the purveyors returning is The London Chippy—a can’t-miss food truck (just look out for the massive Union Jack logo) that specializes in authentic fish and chips. Owner Anthony Robinson, who was born and raised in London, says that he was pleasantly surprised by the adventurous palates at the Seafood Fest last year.

“Typically, we get a lot of customers who stick with fried catfish or trout, but at the festival last year people were like, ‘No we want the cod and the traditional fish and chips,’” Robinson remembers. “It was a great feeling knowing that people really understood who we are and what we do.”

Despite potential cloudy skies, Robinson is looking forward to serving up his authentic delicacies to festival-goers rain or shine: “Fish and chips in the rain is very London,” he says with a laugh. “We welcome every single drop.”

Whether you prefer fish, crab, oysters, shrimp, lobster or a sampling of them all, here are a few highlights on the menu this weekend.

CRAB

Flash Crabcake Co.: This mobile crab company prides itself on peddling its signature six-oz. cakes at an affordable price ($10 with saltines and $11 as a sandwich on a potato roll). Flash will also be selling its classic cream of crab soup—an ideal snack to warm your soul in the potentially soggy weather.

Jimmy’s Famous Seafood: No Bawlmer seafood event is complete without hard-shell crabs. This Dundalk favorite—which has been particularly vocal about its love of crabs in response to the controversial PETA billboards that recently sprouted up in the city—will be slinging half-dozen orders of premium males while supplies last. Jimmy’s will also feature steamed shrimp and crabby fries for attendees who are down to get their hands dirty.

Specials for the day will include mini lobster rolls, crab fries, and hush puppies.

RA Sushi: Harbor East diners are probably familiar with the colorful rolls at this dimly lit sushi spot. Catch RA at the festival to sample the Rainbow Roll (a classic California roll topped with tuna, yellowtail, shrimp, and salmon) and the Tootsy Maki, which mixes crab, shrimp, cucumber, and crunchy tempura bits and tops it in a sweet eel sauce.

Maryland and seafood go together like Old Bay and, well, pretty much anything.
Mount Vernon Marketplace, 520 Park Ave. 12-10 p.m. Free.

Remember ParkFest, Mt. Vernon Marketplace’s first summer block party? Well, that was so last year—it’s all about Parktoberfest now. Despite the festival will still celebrate Charm City through delicious eats, lots of beer, and groovy tunes. Outside on the city streets, enjoy the cool September air and sip on Union Craft beers, as well as cocktails from Cultured, drafts from Taps Fill Station, and other local brews from throughout the marketplace. To soak up the suds, sample your way through the market’s around-the-word offerings, from Pinch’s traditional pork dumplings to the new Cucina Al Volo’s ravioli di burrata to those R-month oysters at The Local Oyster. Once you’re satiated, continue raving in the revelry with a plethora of crafters’ booths and a fresh local music lineup featuring gypsy jazz group Ultrafaux, experimental duo Holy Ghost Party, and old-school DJ Rob Macy.

Baltimore Theatre Project, 45 W. Preston St. 8-11:59 p.m. Free-$15.

While some might argue that Baltimore has lost its edge, the city’s eclectic arts scene is never more alive and well than during the annual High Zero arts festival. Now in its 19th year, musical mad scientists and world-class creatives will defy genre expectations and reinvent music as we know it with expert and out-there improvisations. Half of the core musicians are Baltimore locals, such as abujaphone player Baba L’Salaam and vintage Casio keyboardist Maria Shesiuk, validating the virtuosic talent of the city’s experimental music subculture. Embrace the alternative with a new range of audio possibilities.

WTMD Studios, 1 Olympic Pl., Towson. 7:30-11 p.m. $15-17.

When we first heard of Outcalls earlier this year, we couldn’t get enough of their debut single, “No King.” This weekend, they’re finally releasing their first EP, featuring four tracks and two remixes, and while you’ll have to wait for our full review in the October issue, we’ll just say: it’s friggin’ awesome. This weekend, catch a live broadcast of the female-fronted sextet’s hypnotic melodies and edgy beats, plus a sneak peek of their first music video. Led by Baltimore opera queens Melissa Wimbish and Britt Olsen-Ecker, both classically trained at Peabody Conservatory, the band is making waves with its dreamy vocals, lush electronic instrumentation, and rich alt-baroque sound. Be sure to arrive early as stellar local acts Super City and J Pope and the HearNow will be kicking things off, but be sure to don your best regal garb. You might get crowned the best-dressed royal of the night.

There’s more to Korean culture than kimchi and bibimbap (though we love them both). Since 1977, the ever-growing Korean-American population in Baltimore has been sharing its vibrant traditions with the local community. With 15,000 attendants last year, this 40th annual event proves to be a public favorite. Located at the beautiful Centennial Park in Ellicott City, the celebration features eight hours of non-stop entertainment—from taekwondo demonstrations and traditional fan dances to rising k-pop stars like HeeSun Lee and singer-songwriter Dabit. Food trucks will be serving up mainstream Korean dishes like bulgogi and japchae, and a pojangmacha-style beer garden will pay homage to South Korea’s pop-up street bars. But drivers beware: there will be no public parking at Centennial Park, so make sure to leave your car at one of the six satellite parking locations.

At the beginning of the month, watch master Madonnari artists from around the world—and right here at home—set up shop in the heart of the Italian neighborhood and create beautiful works of chalk art to the theme of “Freedom.” Listen to live music, dig into carb-loaded eats at local enotecas, and kick things off early during a cabaret dinner on Thursday at Germano’s Piattini.

Sept. 17: Baltimore Seafood Festival

Canton Waterfront Park, 3001 Boston St. 12-7 p.m. Free-$99.

In case you
didn’t get your crustacean fix this summer, Baltimore’s seafood spectacular is
back along the waterfront. Dig into signature dishes from the city’s most renowned
seafood houses, like Captain James, Jimmy’s Seafood, Mama’s on the Half Shell,
Ryleigh’s Oyster, Nick’s Fish House, and the Local Oyster to name a few. Think
oysters—barbecued, grilled, or on the half shell—all crab everything, from
steamed to soft shell to sliders, and fish and shrimp. For an extra protein
punch, try turf temptations like Southern Provisions barbecue, Abbey Burger
buns, Snake Hill sausages, and Cosima Italian eats. From Voltaggio Restaurants,
Hersh’s Pizza, Gnocco, and Gunther & Co., local chefs will be offering
cooking demos, and food trucks will be in tow to boot. Once you’re fat and
happy, grab a beer, lay back on the lawn, and listen to live music by the likes
of the All Mighty Senators, and soak up that very end of summer sun.

We may not be
Napa or the Piedmont, but Maryland has a blossoming brood of vineyards turning
out increasingly delicious wine. In between the seasons of red and white, make
your way to Carroll County for a boozy day of vino, with more than 200 local
vintages, regional food, live music, and arts and crafts. At this 19th-century
farmhouse, breathe in the country air and drink down samples from wineries like
Boordy Vineyards, Deep Creek Cellars, Fiore Winery and Distillery, Linganore
Winecellars, and the Eastern Shore’s St. Michaels Winery, plus cider from Great
Shoals Winery and Monkton favorite Millstone Cellars. Best of all, there will
be a “Maryland Cheese Pavilion,” toting the funky goodness of five local cheese
mongers. If you’re looking for us, you know where we’ll be.

In Baltimore, we have a melting pot of music, from the city’s storied jazz and its renowned symphony to Americana bluegrass and a growing base of DIY. But in the corners of each genre, there are a number of improvisational, experimental musicians, and some of the very best in their class. For the 14th year, celebrate these musical misfits during the largest festival of its kind on the East Coast. Twenty-six musicians will come together to create new, off-the-cuff, cutting-edge collaborations and offer viewers a singular experience and window into this subculture. Famous musicians play beside burgeoning beginners and mix the likes of percussion, brass, and strings with the likes of voice, electronics, computers, and found objects. At the Baltimore Theatre Project, catch local computer artist Jeff Carey, Japanese saxophonist N.N.Y., Idaho flugenhorn player Ruby Fulton, or found objects artists Llew Niyomkarn of The Hauge.

from local shops like Ma Petite Shoe, Trohv, doubledutch boutique, and Parisian
Flea, and then head to Chestnut Avenue to catch (or compete in) the iconic
toilet bowl races. Be sure to check out live music (and poetry readings and a
Dangerously Delicious pie-eating contest) across three different stages. With
16 bands in tow, give a listen as you wander 36th Street, with the likes of

<p "="">When Beth Laverick set out to organize the inaugural Baltimore Seafood Fest in 2014, she knew that it would require putting in long hours.

“Luckily I had been in the service industry for a long time, but it was definitely nerve-wracking,” says Laverick, owner of B. Scene Events & Promotions. “But now, it’s gotten to the point where I can just send a quick email and say ‘Everybody in?’”

With its live entertainment, built-in waterfront views, and wide range of eats and drinks, the seafood soiree—which returns to Canton Waterfront Park on September 17 from 12-7 p.m.—is becoming a tradition in the local food community.

“We’ve all become a family in a way,” Laverick says. “And it makes me really proud that some of the top restaurants in the city are joining in.”

This time around, organizers are expanding the festival’s footprint by doubling its live music lineup, introducing a food truck row featuring the likes of Greek on the Street and Kommie Pig, and adding a slew of new eateries to the vendor list.

Of course, old favorites including Captain James Landing, DogWatch Tavern, and Saigon Today will be onsite offering their seafood specialties, but this year’s roster also highlights Seafood Fest newbies like Abbey Burger Bistro, Mama’s on the Half Shell, and The Rowhouse Grill.

Organizers have also made it a priority to incorporate fare from city restaurants that just recently hit the scene. Among the many dishes will be barbecue shrimp skewers from new Canton Square concept Southern Provisions, spicy Louie sausage topped with lump crab meat from Highlandtown’s Snake Hill, Maryland tots from Brewers Hill hangout Huck’s American Craft, and smoked whitefish salad on an Old Bay bagel from local pop-up shop Bottoms up Bagels.

Laverick says that one perk of gathering so many restaurants in one place is fostering connections within the food community. A prime example of this occurred at last year’s event, when The Local Oyster owner Nick Schauman was first introduced to Chef Erik Berlin (more fondly known as Chef Egg). The duo has since started hosting a reoccurring series of monthly cooking classes together.

“I was shucking and [Berlin] was doing a cooking demo, so I just walked up and introduced myself,” Schauman told us earlier this summer. “He was like, ‘I eat your oysters all the time, want to do some classes together?’ And a plan of action started that day.”

While strolling around the grounds, festival-goers will also be able to sit in on various afternoon cooking tutorials led by local chefs Brian Lavin of Gnocco, Jerry Trice of Gunther & Co., Josh Hershkovitz of Hersh’s Pizza and Drinks, and Kevin Cauthorne of Myth & Moonshine.

Other highlights will include family-friendly activities in a designated kid’s zone and live performances from local rockers Feel Free, All Mighty Senators, Shawn Owen Band, and The Scotch Bonnets.

Last year’s festivities drew in a sold-out crowd of 8,000, and Laverick expects to attract a similar audience this time around. Carnival-style ticket packages (food and drink vendors accept tickets instead of cash) start at $15.

“There are other seafood festivals in Maryland, and a million other crab feasts, but the restaurants really set this one apart,” Laverick says. “I love that people bring blankets and spend the day. It just has such a great vibe and local feel.”

Her copious love songs and enduring pop hits—“Stop!

One thing about Charm City that is simply indisputable: We love our seafood.

To celebrate the bounty of the bay, B. Scene Events & Promotions is hosting the second annual Baltimore Seafood Festival at Canton Waterfront Park on September 19 from 12-7 p.m.

B. Scene owner Beth Laverick says that the city’s lack of seafood-centric soirées sparked the idea for last year’s inaugural event.

“Baltimore gets so excited about seafood, and there are always street festivals and block parties going on but not a lot on a larger scale,” Laverick says. “But I also wanted to make sure it wasn’t a ‘fish-fry’ event. The city has a lot more talent than that.”

This time around, organizers are kicking it up a notch by adding to the restaurant lineup, doubling the number of bars, and introducing new cooking demonstrations.

While taking in the harbor side views, festival-goers are invited to sample the seafood specialties of returning restaurants like Cafe Gia, Langermann’s, and Stuggy’s, and first-timers like Nick’s Fish House, Cazbar, and La Scala.

Some of this year’s featured fare will include chargrilled Chesapeake Bay oysters from Ryleigh’s Oyster, mussel pizzas from Verde, crabby fries from Jimmy’s Famous Seafood, shrimp and jalapeño ceviche from Mare Nostrum, steamed crabs from Captain James Landing, and Thames Street Oyster House’s signature lobster rolls.

“You never want to settle for the ‘okay’ restaurants, you really want to go after the good ones,” Laverick notes. “I handle all of the logistics, but it’s the restaurants that make the event a success.”

In addition, live performances by horn-heavy funk group 8 Ohms Band and local roots and reggae musicians Unity will be featured, along with various fall cocktails, beer and wine, face painting, and parachute games for kids.

Laverick says she’s excited to welcome the large number of tourists making their way into the city for the festival, while also bringing the local community together.

“Food is appreciated by everyone,” she says. “I would love someone who has never heard of ceviche to come and feel comfortable.”

Carnival-style ticket packages (vendors accept food and drink tickets rather than cash) start at $12 and are available here.

The Baltimore Seafood Festival, a new event showcasing local restaurants, will be held at Canton Waterfront Park on September 20 from 12-6 p.m.

The inaugural festival will, of course, include oceanic offerings from restaurants like Aggio, Barcocina, Café Gia, Farmstead Grill, Ryleigh’s Oyster, Captain James Landing, Jimmy’s Famous Seafood, Blue Agave, Stuggy’s, Atwater’s, and Pitango—with more being added daily.

Additionally, there will be live music from Strykers’ Posse and Super Bueno, cocktails, cooking demonstrations from chefs, oyster and crab cake eating contests, and a family-friendly zone. There will be a VIP area and a crab-feast tent with private tables for groups.

The event is presented by B Scene Events & Promotions, the brainchild of one our very own “40 Under 40” honorees Beth Laverick.

“Baltimore loves all things seafood. Baltimore also loves all the wonderful local restaurants that truly make this city one of the best places for foodies to live or visit,” Laverick said. “The Baltimore Seafood Festival will allow locals and visitors to sample signature seafood dishes in a fun, casual environment. My hope is that this event becomes a tradition for years to come.”

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Downtown Baltimore Family Alliance.

We have seen recent food festivals take place with decidedly mixed results, but we are confident that Laverick—with all her experience at Waterfront Partnership—will make the city’s first family-friendly seafood festival a big success.
