Excuse us for feeling like the Ravens and Orioles are colluding on some master plan to make us learn as many new names and storylines as possible before they begin their 2019 seasons. It’s hard to keep up with all the changes.

This week alone: Terrell Suggs gone, to Arizona (here he is in Cardinal red—weird); Eric Weddle signed with a team in Los Angeles; C.J. Mosley, he of the cathartic playoff-berth sealing interception and a four-time Pro Bowler, is now the richest inside linebacker in the NFL, with the New York Jets; Joe Flacco was officially traded to Denver; and outside linebacker Za’Darius Smith said he’s headed to Green Bay. There’s no telling how many hours the Ravens’ social media staff spent posting nostalgic thank you tributes to the departed.

Meanwhile, former Orioles captain Adam Jones signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks (are there good crabs in the southwest or something?)—he got a video tribute, too—and first-year O’s manager Brandon Hyde named Alex Cobb the team’s Opening Day starter.

And we haven’t even talked about the big additions to town: safety Earl Thomas and running back Mark Ingram, whom the Ravens signed at the start of the NFL’s free agency period and whom the team will introduce at a press conference in Owings Mills on Friday morning.

It’s always difficult to say goodbye to familiar and respected sports heroes—which we’ve done a lot of the last few months (see Buck Showalter, Flacco, and Jones). But change also creates opportunities, and fresh starts. Two-plus months into this year, that’s the story of Baltimore’s biggest teams. The question now is what comes of the all the new?

Well, for starters, the Ravens’ addition of Thomas, who has been widely regarded as one of the league’s best safeties but missed most of last season with a broken leg, seems fitting for a franchise that will see Ed Reed inducted to the Hall of Fame this August at that position. Thomas was the leader of the Seattle Seahawks’ legendary “Legion of Boom” a few years ago.

A pairing with fellow safety Tony Jefferson has already led a few observers to create equal parts patriotic and funny “Thomas Jefferson” references to the twosome.

The continued changing-of-the-quarterback guard will get the most attention, though. The Ravens thanked Flacco for the memories after the trade was made official, and he in turn thanked them.

The only thing that would have made this week more interesting is if former Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell chose to sign with the Ravens instead of the Jets, which he was reportedly close to doing.

We’re also close to the O’s first game of the year, now less than two weeks away against the Yankees in New York. Cobb, who was 5-15 with a 4.90 earned run average in 28 starts for the Orioles last season, is now apparently the O’s best pitcher.

That might not sound promising, but we’ll take our chances with something new.

In case you were wondering, Terrell Suggs still arrives to practice at the Under Armour Performance Center by driving team owner Steve Bisciotti’s customized purple and black, Ravens logo-embossed golf cart from the locker room area onto the facility’s crisp green turf.

Getting caught red-handed by the owner during training camp in July—the first time that happened in 16 seasons—hasn’t stopped the face-of-the-franchise linebacker from continuing the mischievous tradition he started years ago with former teammate Haloti Ngata.

Suggs’ new passenger is 335-pound defensive lineman Brandon Williams, who looks a lot like Ngata in size. The daily scene includes Suggs in the driver’s seat, playfully weaving the steering wheel back and forth to pilot the covered two-seater across the grass like a slalom skier—until he intentionally crashes it into a set of gray rubber garbage cans near the far sideline of the facility’s northern field.

So long as the Ravens defense keeps playing the way it is—looking like the best in the NFL with many statistical arguments to support the claim—we don’t imagine Bisciotti minds.

Suggs was one of eight different Ravens credited with a franchise-record 11 sacks last Sunday in a 21-0 win on the road against the Tennessee Titans. The milestone was the symbolic highlight of a complete shutout performance that turned the rest of the football-watching country onto what we already know as maybe the best Ravens defense since the year 2000. “That’s how we’re built on defense,” coach John Harbaugh said. “We bring a lot of pressure. We bring people from different places.”

It was so impressive to watch, let’s do it again.

Here’s all 11 of the sacks of poor Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota, ranked in order of most fun, significant, or some other irreverent adjective, to least:

10. Kenny Young and Willie Henry, 13:38 fourth quarter
The rookie linebacker from UCLA and third-year lineman from Michigan pair combined to wrestle Mariota down. At this point, the Titans’ players looked like they wanted to go home.

9. Patrick Onwuasor, 5:29 fourth quarter
For the Ravens’ 10th sack, the third-year linebacker from Portland State pulled down Mariota after the QB pump-faked near his own goal line.

8. Za’Darius Smith, 11:19 first quarter
The fourth-year pro from Kentucky bull rushed up the middle and pounced on Mariota before he could escape the pocket. We didn’t know two more sacks from the relative unknown were still to come.

7. Chris Wormley, 11:54 first quarter
The first sack of the 11. Mariota slipped away from an unblocked Suggs’ initial rush, but wasn’t able to escape from Wormley, the second-year defensive end from Michigan (thanks to John Harbuagh’s brother, Jim, for the Wolverine recommendations).

“I did like the tug-of-war,” Tucker told Baltimore after the Ravens’ 44-20 win over Detroit that boosted their postseason hopes ahead of Sunday night’s rivalry game at Pittsburgh. “This is coming from a guy who loves and appreciates a good celebration, but I usually have no idea what happens between the time a touchdown is scored and the time we kick. It’s tough to even take notice. But I did see that one played back on the Jumbotron.”

If you want to know more about how it came to be, BaltimoreRavens.com has the details, but just know it was decided upon a few minutes earlier and the celebration even made an NFL official smile. And the Ravens, too. Collins tacked on an Irish step dance for good measure (he’s into that) in the end zone after another touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

The win improved the Ravens’ record to 7-5 and, with four regular season games left, they have an 83-percent chance of making the playoffs, according to at least one website that tracks the probabilities. The defense, though it lost cornerback Jimmy Smith to a ruptured left Achilles’ tendon on Sunday, has played great all year, with three shutouts and an NFL-leading 18 interceptions and 26 forced turnovers. The offense, which hasn’t been great, came alive Sunday with its best performance of the season and Joe Flacco’s back is as healthy as it’s been all year.

“This team can be really, really special,” Tucker said. “We’re peaking at the right time. It’s exciting. The attitude around here has been the same. Whether we’re talking about week one, two, or three or 11, 12, and 13, this is a team that’s had confidence and knows we have good players. We can do some great things.”

For his part, Tucker has his own pre- and post-kick rituals. Watch closely, or even from afar, on game day and you’ll see him handshaking a seemingly endless line of teammates before kickoffs and after field goals, like a (Tucker routine) 51-yarder he made Sunday. He capped that off with hand-slapping with defensive back Anthony Levine and a gentlemanly formal handshake with backup quarterback Ryan Mallett.

“I have a variety of handshakes with different guys on the team,” said the All-Pro kicker, who has converted 26 field goals this year, tied for fourth-most in the league and is the second-most accurate kicker in NFL history. “I went through the handshake gauntlet before the kickoff. It’s great that we have opportunities to celebrate like we did today. Everybody is playing well.”

Said linebacker Terrell Suggs: “We have four more [games] left.” And hopefully at least one more—with some additional creative celebrations—after that.

Terrell Suggs had to cut gefilte fish out of his diet.
Yes, you read that correctly. Sure, this time of year is when NFL players really get strict about their exercise regimen and dietary choices to slim down for the season. But, when talking with the Associated Press this week, Terrell Suggs revealed a bizarre indulgence. “I like my fried chicken, my pizza, my peaches, and my gefilte fish. I had to cut all that out,” he said. Jury is still out on whether or not Suggs actually considers the Jewish whitefish a guilty pleasure, but he is certainly known, among other things, to have a sense of humor. Or, as Ravens tackle Timmy Jernigan puts it: “He brings a special type of energy with him. Oh, yeah. Dude is a freak.”

First, start with the great news: The Ravens renegotiated Joe Flacco’s current deal.
We get to keep our beloved, rock-solid QB in purple for the next six seasons. The move, which saves the Ravens a few bucks in the very short-term and opens some much-needed cap space this season, is for a record-setting average of $21.1 million. When asked if he gave anything up in negotiations with the team, Flacco chuckled. “It’s tough to say you give up anything when you’re signing these kind of deals.” Good answer, Joe.

More good football news: Justin Tucker, one of the NFL’s best kickers and one of our favorite men-about-town, also re-signed with the Ravens.
Tucker officially signed for another year after the team placed their “franchise tag” on him, meaning he’ll play for $4.5 mil this fall while hopefully the two sides work out a longer deal. What’s not to love about a guy who sings operas and gets practice kicks in at Patterson Park? (check video below.)

The bad, but could’ve been worse, news: Terrell Suggs arrested.
The linebacker, recovering from a season-ending Achilles tear, was arrested early this morning in Arizona for leaving the scene of an accident and driving on a suspended license. First reported by TMZ, naturally. No was injured in accident, which was a single-car collision, and police said Suggs was not impaired. Not much else to say, except that we’re glad no one was hurt.

The truly bad news: No pie for you.
Who are these people putting a stop to Adam Jones’s post-game pieing? The kite-banning Taliban? As every O’s fan knows, Jones transformed the traditional, staid post-game on-field interview into a fun, summer ritual at Camden Yards. Who exactly put the kibosh on pie smashing isn’t clear to us, but apparently it was deemed necessary for “safety” reasons. Whatever.

And the awesome: Destiny Hudgins, a 16-year-old Carver student, became the first female from Baltimore City to qualify for the state-wrestling tournament.
Kudos to The Baltimore Sun for profiling Hudgins, a Carver team captain, this week. There is simply no tougher high school sport—physically and mentally—where athletes take the mat alone, literally putting themselves not just at risk of losing, but getting pinned. Only a sophomore, we’re sure there are more great things in Destiny’s future.

1. Justin Tucker sings opera for Royal Farms.
In yet another example of a Ravens player being hilarious on TV (also see Flacco’s recent one-liner on Jimmy Fallon), Justin Tucker is now the new spokesperson for Royal Farms. In the latest commercial, Tucker is seemingly so energized by RoFo’s coffee that he bursts into an aria, showing off his signature operatic voice. I guess the company figured that the lean Tucker couldn’t put away chicken boxes quite like former Ravens defensive tackle Haloti Ngata, so coffee was the next best thing.

2. Orioles hit two grand slams in one inning.
It’s been an-ebb-and-flow type of week for the Orioles, (though, technically, we could still take an AL wild card spot) but a definitive highlight was Friday night’s game when the O’s hit two grand slams in one inning. The insane 10-run eighth inning saw both Nolan Reimold and Steve Clevenger hit their first career grand slams in the ultimate 14-8 win. To make things even crazier, that same inning included a solo homer from Manny Machado and manager Buck Showalter getting ejected after a hit-by-pitch. But, obviously, the real feat was the two grand slams, which made Baltimore the only franchise to have accomplished the multi-grand slam twice (also in 1986).

3. Suggs is out for season; Upshaw and Dumervil to fill the gap.
Sunday’s game against the Broncos was frustrating for a lot of reasons—Denver still won despite the fact that Peyton Manning didn’t throw for any touchdowns, we had multiple dropped passes, and, worst of all, Terrell Suggs tore his Achilles heel and will be out for the season. Of course, this isn’t the first time. In fact, Suggs tore his (other) Achilles heel in 2012, the same year the Ravens ended up winning the Super Bowl. So, not all hope is lost. The Ravens have already signed veteran pass rusher Jason Babin, and the two men who have split the starting outside linebacker position for the past couple seasons, Elvis Dumervil and Courtney Upshaw, are also ready to take the reigns. “A guy like Terrell Suggs, what he brings to the table is hard to replace,” Dumervil told BaltimoreRavens.com. “We have guys who have to step up, myself included, and we just have to get the job done.” For his part, Suggs also seems pretty confident that his injury won’t stop the Ravens from living up to Sports Illustrated’s prediction.

Chin up Ravens Nation! We’ve been here before… This changes NOTHING!!! Our mission is still the same!
#2016SanFrancisco #RAVENSNATION
— T.S STARK (@untouchablejay4) September 14, 2015

4. Orioles pitcher helps fan change flat tire.
While O’s rookie pitcher Mike Wright had a dismal start on Wednesday night, his skills as a car mechanic shined a few days earlier. After the Orioles 8-2 win over the Royals on Sunday, Wright saw a fan having some car trouble outside of Camden Yards. According to The Baltimore Sun, he stopped and helped the fan change the flat in 20 minutes, which sounds like record-time to us. As if that wasn’t enough, Wright also gifted the stranded fan a pair of Orioles tickets for the following night. Wright’s simple explanation as to why: “He was obviously having a bad day.”

5. MASN cameraman comes this close to winning $1 million on American Ninja Warrior.
If you’re a fan of America Ninja Warrior, you’ve been following the trajectory of Olney native Geoff Britten (and his cute blonde family), as he breezed his way into the finals. Nicknamed Popeye because of his massive forearms, Britten became the first American to complete the final course (climbing up a 75-foot rope in less than 30 seconds). But he didn’t get the grand prize of $1 million because Colorado rock climber Issac Cladiero completed the course just 3 seconds faster. And, apparently, there is no prize for second place. Britten, a cameraman for MASN, got squat. If you think this seems massively unfair, you’re not the only one. On Wednesday, a GoFundMe page was created because, according to the description, “As someone that works full-time to support his family, we feel that Geoff is just as deserving to receive the prize.” As of Friday morning, the page was up to nearly $5,500 in donations. Plus, we don’t think this is the last time we’ll see Britten fly threw a ninja course on national TV.

#17: Terrell Suggs Becomes Thigh Master
January 3, 2015

We came up with this list of the 20 all-time greatest Ravens moments in a locked, top secret compound (okay, my office) several weeks ago. So it’s just a coincidence that #17: “Terrell Suggs Becomes Thigh Master” happens to fall on the same week that Suggs tore his Achilles tendon and will be lost to the Ravens for the season. (We’ll pause briefly to let you scream, rock back and forth in a corner, weep like a baby—whatever you deem appropriate. Aaaaand . . . we’re back.)

How it happened: Every game against the Steelers feels gigantic. Playoff games, even more so. It was the fourth quarter of a tight 2015 AFC Wild Card between the Ravens and their arch rivals. With the Ravens up 23 to 15, Pittsburgh was driving. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger narrowly averted the rush, spun around, threw a hasty pass which was tipped and then caught . . . between Terrell Suggs’s legs. The play has been known as the Thigh Master play—and, indeed, Suggs has thighs of steel. But if you look closely at the replay, he actually caught it more between his knees. Either way, it took incredible concentration, presence of mind, and, uh, leg grip. The play seemed to take the wind out of Pittsburgh’s sails. The Ravens went on to win the game 30 to 17.

1. Joe Flacco mocks himself in surprisingly good Pepsi/Tostitos ad.
For a Super Bowl winning quarterback, Flacco does surprisingly few national commercials. (Locally, he’s got that Mother’s account on LOCK DOWN, though.) That’s partly because he isn’t exactly—how shall we put this gently?—the life of the party. It’s that very quality that Pepsi and Tostitos are gently teasing in this clever ad. The best part is that Joe totally plays along and is actually funny! On purpose! And, while we are on the subject, are we the first to notice that Joe Flacco has gotten kind of…hot lately? With Tom Brady still embroiled in “Deflate Gate” is it possible we are seeing the new face of the NFL?

2. Manny reels Schoop in.
Look, there hasn’t been a lot to cheer about lately in Birdland (understatement), so let’s focus on a very cute moment between Jonathan Schoop and his bro Manny Machado on Wednesday night. After Schoop hit a mammoth two-run home run against the Royals to put the Orioles ahead once and for all, Manny excitedly reeled him back into the dugout. These two are so dang cute together!

3. John Urschel and Ravens have (playful) Twitter spat.
It started with the Ravens posting a picture of linebacker (and mathematician!) John Urschel as the Incredible Hulk.

Urschel responded like this:

A team drafts you, and you think they respect you. Then they do this… Real cool, @Ravens ;p http://t.co/g3M8QqIELW pic.twitter.com/gVwvvbOFtC
— John Urschel (@MathMeetsFball) August 28, 2015

And then the Ravens responded like this:

.@MathMeetsFball The hulk is a genius and also a beast. We felt it apt.
— Baltimore Ravens (@Ravens) August 28, 2015

Your move, Urschulk.

4. A bad week for the Orioles may have just gotten worse.
Last night, the Orioles slump continued with a 5-3 loss to the Royals. To add injury to insult, so to speak, Orioles All-Star Adam Jones left the game after crashing into the center-field wall while diving to make a catch in the third inning. He was down for several minutes and even tried to stay in the game, before being replaced in the lineup by Paul Janish. In true Jones form, he thinks he’ll be ready to play Friday night against the Rangers. As of now, they’re saying it’s whiplash, but not a concussion. We love what a gamer Jones is, but frankly we’d prefer he take a few days off to heal rather than come back too soon risking further injury. (The pessimist in us says, whether he plays or not doesn’t seem to be making much of a difference these days…Sigh).

5. Terrell Suggs hit on Sam Bradford deemed legal.
In the Ravens 40-17 preseason loss to Philadelphia (do not panic, people; it’s the preseason), linebacker Terrell Suggs was charged with roughing passer Sam Bradford. Suggs immediately argued that it was a legal hit, as Bradford was not passing, but running the “read option,” where a quarterback chooses to hand-off the ball or run himself. As Suggs put it later in his inimitable way, “You’ve got to know the rules. If you want to run the read option with your starting quarterback that’s had two knee surgeries, that’s on you.” Of course, Suggs, a true student of the game, was right. The NFL later acknowledged that Suggs should not have been called for a penalty.

1. O’s win No. 5,000, pitch a shutout doubleheader, and move into first-place.
This is what’s known as hitting the trifecta. Ubaldo Jimenez continued his impressive first half of the season by pitching eight scoreless innings in Game 1 of Sunday’s doubleheader against Cleveland while picking up the franchise’s 5,000 victory. The O’s staff then posted a second goose egg in Game 2, ultimately helping push the O’s to the top of American League East standings, where they still sit as of today. Ain’t the beer cold?

2. U.S. women’s soccer team advances to the World Cup finals.
Not a super strong Maryland connection here, but a couple of small ones. Head coach Jill Ellis previously served as an assistant coach at the University of Maryland for three seasons. And two players, defender Ali Krieger and backup keeper Ashlyn Harris, are members of the Washington Spirit of the National Women’s Soccer League, which plays their home matches at the Maryland Soccerplex in Boyds.

The U.S. women will meet Japan in the finals Sunday evening at 7 p.m. and we’re really looking forward to that match. We think it’s a good omen that it falls on the Fourth of July weekend.

3. Under Armour All-America lacrosse games at Towson University.
This is both a replay and a preview. First, congrats to the six Baltimore-area boys and 10 Baltimore-area girls recently named to their respective Under Armour All-America South squads. Second, there’s still time to go watch the girls’ match tonight at 5:30 p.m. at Johnny Unitas Stadium and the boys’ game at 8 p.m. You can also catch the boys’ game live on ESPNU, although that won’t be as much fun.

4. Manny Machado remains en fuego.
The 22-year-old simply has been the O’s best player this season. Batting leadoff, he’s hitting .303 and boasts the best on-base percentage among the regulars. He leads the team in hits, runs scored, stolen bases, and doubles, and his 16 homers and 44 RBIs are second only to Chris Davis’ totals. But he’s also been especially sizzling over the past 30 games, hammering out line drives at a .365 clip. And yeah, he can flash the leather, as we know. Check these highlights against Texas—each spectacular defensive play different from the next.

5. Steve Harvey flags Terrell Suggs.
Representing the Ravens in an AFC-NFC Celebrity Family Feud match to raise money for Players Assistance Foundation, Terrell Suggs did what he does. He hit it hard. The buzzer, we mean. Suggs and host Steve Harvey produced the funniest moment of the show when the linebacker beat 49ers tight end Vernon Davis to the buzzer to answer the question, “Something a man might name after himself?”

Suggs didn’t hesitate, sending a quick, vicious blow to the buzzer that caused Harvey to interrupt the game and basically admonish the All-Pro that although he was in a competitive environment—the studio wasn’t a football field. “Listen man, when y’all leave, we still got to use this,” Harvey said, gesturing to the buzzer. Suggs, by the way, nailed the question, too, scoring the top answer with “His son.” We think he’s probably anxious for spring training to start.

Let’s just say it: The Boston metro area got their collective underwear in a bunch this week when they realized they’d be facing the Ravens. Twice in recent years, we’ve gone into their stadium for playoff games and handily defeated their beloved Brady and Belichick.

Upsets at home like those are the kind of things that tend to stick with a fan base that believes it’s their divine right to win the Super Bowl each year and any challenger that beats them up fair and square must be somehow unfit to wear the crown. (Of course, we could’ve scored a playoff hat trick if Lee Evans had simply tucked away a fourth-quarter touchdown pass. We’ll blame that on Evans playing most of his career for the Buffalo Bills.)

In truth, the deep fretting from New England fans this week as expressed in numerous blogs, comment sections, and in this ESPNBoston
Q&A, for example, has been embarrassing.

	Consider
Boston blowhard and columnist Eric Wilbur, who responded to the Ravens’ win over the Steelers by calling Baltimore, “the most deplorable organization in American professional sports.” Well, did he forget that one of the Patriots’ former stars is in prison facing murder charges? This guy even evokes “God” twice in his hater piece.

Chill out, buddy. Life will go on after the Ravens beat the Patriots again.

Then Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, when asked in a press conference if the Ravens “cut block” (an illegal technique), responds with “Is the Pope Catholic?” Yes, Bill, and 1958 wants its wisecrack back. But we also hope that the Pope isn’t a hypocrite. Belichick, lest we forget, was fined $500,000 for illegally videotaping
New York Jets‘ defensive coaches’ signals in 2007 in the Spygate controversy. More recently, in 2013, the Pats were busted by NFL refs for their illegal blocking schemes.

But our favorite response this week comes from a Patriots fan named Ben Affleck. He became so flustered when asked by paparazzi about playing the Ravens, he actually stopped what he was doing to express
his dread to this
TMZ guy on video, totally forgetting he hates paparazzi and TMZ.

Bottom line, they’re shaking in their cleats in Beantown. Here are five reasons why:

Flacco: At this point in his career, he’s simply one of the best playoff quarterbacks ever. He’s won of 10 of 14 games while throwing 21 TD passes and avoiding bad interceptions. If the running game clicks early, it will open things up for Joe to spread the ball around, move the chains, and take his shots downfield. We loved the roll outs last week.

Our pass rush: The Ravens dropped quarterbacks 49 times this year, second-best in the NFL. Suggs and Dumervil and company sacked Big Ben last week five times while getting pressure on nearly half his throws. Brady is average at best under pressure and getting worse as he grows older in the playoffs when the heat gets turned up. A great pass rushing effort led to the Giants’ huge upset of the Pats in the 2008 Super Bowl, too. Absolutely, the key to the game.

Check out the infograph below, courtesy of the Baltimore Ravens:

Our secondary: This group struggled mightily at times this season, but has come together in recent weeks. The Ravens did play mediocre football down the regular season stretch—on the offensive side of the ball. Safety Will Hill has been good, corner Ladarius Webb is due for a breakout game, and newcomer Rashaan Melvin has settled in at the other corner. The secondary stood up against the high-scoring Steelers and now they’ve got to make sure they don’t miss any tackles in New England’s short passing game and prevent Gronkowski from getting loose downfield.

Our offensive line: Like our secondary, this is one of the Ravens’ inconsistent areas because of injuries. What bodes well now, however, is guard Marshall Yanda’s move to right tackle and the insertion of rookie guard John Urschel into Yanda’s old spot. Urschel’s a Penn State guy, so he’s smart and well-coached. The offensive line—including the left tackle spot, whether it’s rookie James Hurst or Eugene Monroe, if he’s healthy—and the secondary don’t have to be great, just solid. If they hold things together, Flacco, Forsett, the Ravens’ receivers, the defensive line, and the special teams will come up with enough big plays to win the game.

Steve Smith: Carolina QB Cam Newton says Smith “always” plays with a chip on his shoulder. He’s been exactly what the Ravens needed this season after losing Anquan Boldin and Vonta Leach. In football, you need tough guys and hitters on both sides of the ball. Veterans like Smith, Owen Daniels, and Forsett know playoff opportunities like this don’t come along often—expect them to play like there’s no tomorrow Saturday.

The script might have read something like this: It's February 2014, and in the snowy, windy swamps of New Jersey the greatest football sequel of all-time is unfolding.

As the clock at MetLife Stadium ticks down, the Ravens, trailing by a single point in their quest for a second-straight Super Bowl victory, appear beaten. The Detroit Lions sit on the brink of the title. (Hey, this is Hollywood—anything goes.)

On third down, the Lions' quarterback drops back to pass, a completion spelling certain doom for the boys from Baltimore. In the center of the frame, as usual, is the golden-armed QB, but as he looks to his right, a jump cut shows self-proclaimed "gladiator" Terrell Suggs (played by Henry Simmons of NYPD Blue fame) streaking around the offensive line.

The roar of the crowd fades to classical music of the intense variety. As the play unwinds in super slow-mo, cameras cut to the Ravens' sideline, where Coach John Harbaugh (Kyle Chandler) paces nervously. Over his shoulder, the retired Ray Lewis (The Rock) looks to the heavens, asking the Almighty for one more solid.

Cut back to the field, where at the exact moment No. 55 in purple plows into the hapless Lions passer (Kid Rock), a timpani drum explodes on the soundtrack. Suggs's ferocious hit causes a fumble, which he recovers and returns for the winning touchdown.

Cue the confetti. Roll credits. Please properly dispose of your popcorn bags and soda cups on your way out of the theater.

More than anyone on the planet, the real Terrell Suggs is capable of making this happen, whether in reality or on the screen. Following an injury-plagued season that saw his production decline and his critics multiply, the 30-year-old quarterback-attacking, ball-hawking, trash-talking linebacker is in the best shape of his life, poised for the first time in his illustrious 11-year career to receive top billing on a defense that suddenly finds itself short a few icons.

A burgeoning film producer who harbors as much respect for Tyler Perry as he does disdain for Tom Brady, Suggs believes that 2013 is his time.

He's ready for the starring role.

Walking shirtless through the halls of the Ravens' training facility after a mini-camp practice in June, Suggs appears not so much man as machine. His upper torso is impossibly muscular—almost like a human Transformer.

"If I was going to create a player on the 'Madden' football game, I'd create somebody just like Terrell Suggs to play on my defense," Cincinnati Bengals tackle Andrew Whitworth told ESPN.com in 2012.

T-Sizzle, as he's nicknamed, has just taken an ice bath, and after putting on a white T-shirt that looks as if it could burst Incredible Hulk-style, diamond earrings, and a Marines baseball cap, he settles into a seat in the cafeteria.

"I feel great," says Suggs, who is listed at 6-foot-3, 260 pounds. He's leaning forward, animated and engaged, almost as if he wishes the season started tomorrow. "No dings, no nicks, I can't remember the last time I actually felt 100 percent."

It certainly wasn't last year, when Suggs missed the first half of the season after tearing his Achilles tendon in April. He shocked the football and sports-medicine worlds by coming back only five months after surgery, but it was clear that he wasn't the same player. A torn bicep late in the year didn't help matters. He recorded just two sacks.

When Suggs first stepped onto a football field, everyone on both sides of the ball had to worry.

"I personally did not think he would be able to come back from an Achilles injury and play, especially at that position when you're talking about him being a speed-rush guy and covering guys out of the backfield, which he does occasionally," says Brad Jackson, a former Ravens linebacker and analyst for Comcast SportsNet. "Him being able to go out there and battle 350-pound men, beat a block, make a tackle, beat a double-team, for him to come back the way he did was a testament to his workout. He's out there with one arm and one leg, and continuing to play at a very high level—not a Pro-Bowl level, but offenses still had to account for No. 55."

When Suggs first stepped onto a football field, everyone on both sides of the ball had to worry. In elementary school, he was too big to play with boys his own age.

"My dad signed me up for football when I was eight years old, but I had to play [with 10 year olds]," Suggs says. One of four children in the family (another died at birth), Suggs grew up in a tough St. Paul, MN, neighborhood before the family relocated to Chicago and, eventually, Arizona. His father, Donald Sr., wanted to ensure that his son could take care of himself.

A running back in high school, Suggs shredded opposing defenses, but astutely saw that his future lay in delivering the hits, not avoiding them. He stayed close to home and attended Arizona State University, where his 24 sacks in his junior season set a Pac-10 record. The Ravens made him the 10th pick in the NFL draft in 2003, when he went on to be named Associated Press Defensive Rookie of the Year.

"From day one, his passion and his work ethic far superseded his age," Jackson says.

In Baltimore, Suggs says, there was no choice.

"There are only two teams that you're gonna think about in the history of the NFL when you speak of defense," he says. "One is our rivals [the Pittsburgh Steelers], and the other is Ray Lewis and the Baltimore Ravens. When I first came here, I just knew I was in privileged company. I got to walk alongside giants. From the moment I got here, it was either you're gonna take on that persona or you're not gonna make it."

Suggs immediately fit in. He tied an NFL record with a sack in each of his first four games, and his outwardly carefree attitude notwithstanding, he innately understood that professional football is serious business. Over the course of his career, he's made four Pro Bowls and was Defensive Player of the Year in 2011.

"I really didn't like him very much when I first met him," says teammate Haloti Ngata, who joined the Ravens in 2006. "He was just really loud, kind of obnoxious. But, once I got to know him, my perspective changed. Whenever I had a question about football, I'd ask him, and it created a bond. Seeing how hard he worked was a great example."

Still, despite his fondness for microphones and their attraction to him (the area around his locker is usually crowded real estate for media after games), he always played third fiddle to Hall of Famers-to-be Ray Lewis and Ed Reed.

"To his credit, for all the success that he's had, he's always said this is Ray Lewis's team," Jackson says. "That's rare, especially in this day and age in modern sports where it's always about 'me.' He's waited his turn, and now they're going to have to look to him on defense. He's going to have to be the emotional leader."

For all his bravado—Suggs once famously said that while God could have Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's soul, "his ass belongs to me"—he refuses to abandon the team-first approach that has garnered the Ravens so many wins over the years.

"It's our team," he says. "A lot of guys have been around here that have also earned their stripes. Haloti Ngata, Lardarius Webb. It's gonna fall on all of us to keep our Raven identity and keep the standard those guys have set. We have a few guys who can lead this team."

John Harbaugh, however, is looking specifically at Suggs to step up.

"I think [Terrell] always has taken a leadership role, but it might be different this year," the coach says. "There will be higher expectations for him. He'll be a little more of the focal point without those guys here. I know he's up to the challenge."

Terrell Suggs has 84 1/2 career sacks, and nearly as many opinions. At the end of our interview in June, I asked him about a handful of controversial issues, and he didn't shy from commenting on any of them. I started by discussing NBA player Jason Collins, who had just become the first man in a major American team sport to proclaim that he is gay.

"He needs to be commended on his courage," Suggs says. "I accept people for who they are because I would want someone to accept me for who I am. I personally don't have a problem with it—that's their choice, and I respect that."

Moments later he maintains that he's never had a concussion—"this is football, everybody gets their bell rung"—and the NFL is overreacting to the perceived problem.

"We all know it comes back to money," he says. "It's not really 'We're gonna commit to safety,' it's really so people don't come back with this problem or that problem after they're done playing. It's business."

In December, Suggs wed his longtime girlfriend, Candace Williams, with whom he has two children. It was the culmination of a rocky relationship. A month earlier, she had filed a protective order against him, which she ultimately voluntarily withdrew. As part of the filing, however, Suggs was forced to surrender nine guns. But he was never charged with a crime, so they were returned to him. He continues to own and operate firearms—unapologetically.

"I don't think the problem is the guns, the problem is gun violence and murder," he says. "I do it to protect my home. I've had a couple of homes burglarized. I have two children and their safety is first and foremost my number-one priority in my life.

"I personally believe that a person should be able to defend himself and his family. You don't tell a gazelle to cut his horns off and defend himself against a lion that's trying to kill him. You don't make it easier for your attacker. I'm erring on the side of safety for my family."

Despite his turbulent domestic past, married life "is lovely," he says. "At first it was a period of adjustment, but I like it."

	He catches himself.

	"I love it, excuse me."

Asked what he's learned from Williams, he responds, "that men can be monogamous. I've definitely learned that, whether I want to or not."

It's a typical Suggs line—scathingly honest, amusing, and spoken with utter disregard for the potential consequences. His frankness—and his play, of course—got him booked on ESPN's First Take, a daily shouting match featuring journalists/commentators Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless yelling at each other (and occasionally their guests) about whatever it is they're disagreeing about on any given weekday.

After the Ravens' 2012 AFC Championship game loss to the New England Patriots, Suggs appeared on the show and, in the heat of a debate, called Bayless a "douche bag." It was a rare moment of frankness in the almost-always canned world of sports television.

"We have different views," Suggs says of Bayless, whom he describes as a "frenemy." "It's just like Republicans and Democrats; it's all from a point of view. I don't hate Skip or anything like that, I just think some of the things he said he done lost his mind."

If Bayless ever reads that, he'll probably chuckle. After years of sparring with Suggs, he seems to have developed an appreciation for the linebacker's unfiltered approach, which makes for good TV sports talk (or at least what passes for good these days).

"Suggs can be as quick mentally as he is physically," Bayless says. "Three years ago we had Suggs in studio for the entire two-hour show and I got to chat with him quite a bit off-air. I liked him and loved his good-spirited combativeness. He doesn't take himself quite as seriously as some stars of his caliber do, and he's an intriguing mix of street sly and artistically creative. I always have fun with Suggs and I'm pretty sure he has fun going at it with me. Sometimes he makes me laugh, but he often makes me fight a grin."

Suggs is equally spirited when he talks about the big screen. While sports can provide fertile ground for father-son bonding, and men find commonality in the flow of a basketball game and the violence of football, in the Suggs household, the silver screen (from the drama of The Godfather to the fantasy of Star Wars) served the same purpose.

"It was something me and my father and brother did together," Suggs says. "I don't know if it was a sixth sense, I just always knew I would be part of film somehow. Kind of like football, I just loved it."

With time on his hands due to a contract dispute, Suggs attended the 2009 American Black Film Festival in Miami, where he met filmmaker Monica Mingo.

"Everybody was trying to find someone with money who could help fund their project," she says. "Terrell obviously had the money [he signed a reported six-year, $63-million contract that summer], but he also had the passion for it."

When they returned to Maryland, a meeting ensued, and soon after Team Sizzle Films produced its first project with Suggs as president and CEO, and Mingo serving as creative executive director. Sisters was a short film shot over two days in Washington, D.C., for $7,000.

"He's waited his turn, and now they're going to have to look to him on defense. He's going be the emotional leader."

"It struck a chord with all of us that we had great energy together," Mingo says. While the two were writing a subsequent project, Suggs imagined a woman in a wedding dress crying. It became the basis for When Beautiful People Do Ugly Things, a short that was accepted into the Cannes International Film Festival in 2011.

"Terrell has a very sophisticated eye for the way something should be presented," Mingo says. "He is very quick on his feet. He knows what people enjoy seeing. The things that he doesn't really care about are dotting the I's and crossing the T's.

"He'll have this vision, and he's confident that we've built the team to make that happen. Just like the CEO of any Fortune 500 company, he's not necessarily sitting down trying to figure out the nuts and bolts of how to get it done; he knows how he wants it done."

It's working. The company's first full-length feature, The Coalition, was released on Netflix and in retail stores, and through July 16 received an average of 3.9 starts (out of five) from the 95,761 people who rated it.

Filmmaking is clearly more than a hobby for Suggs, whose locker is equipped with a 40-inch TV, PlayStation, Bose sound system, and at least 40 DVDs. His library runs the gamut, from The Avengers to Ted to Finding Forester to The Usual Suspects.

"He likes to play a lot of those war movies like 300 or Troy," says Ngata, whose locker is next to Suggs's. "He does it depending on what the feeling is in the building of the players. He'll play a comedy if we need to loosen up. A lot of players will pull their chair up and watch the movie."

While Suggs sees his future in the film industry, he's still more J.J. Watt than J.J. Abrams. He dropped 20 pounds this off-season and, by all accounts, appears ready to return to his pre-2012 form.

"He looks phenomenal," says Jackson, a close Ravens observer. "He wants to get back to that 12-, 13-, 15-sack type of year. It's going to be hell to pay for a lot of quarterbacks."

Entering his 30s as a married man, father, and football player, Suggs appears more comfortable in his own tattooed skin than ever.

"I made a decision that either people are gonna accept me for the real me or they're not gonna like me at all," he says. "The ones that do are going to appreciate you being yourself and being genuine. I don't want to come off as fake. I always want to give people the real me."

On the football field and off it, Suggs has done just that.

	That's a wrap.
