How would you best describe your shop in one sentence?
Sarah Adams: Rad threads with a message.

If you could have any super power what would it be?
SA: The ability to heal. If someone was hurt or injured the ability to take away their pain and make them well again, that would be amazing. Although, the selfish part of me wants to say the ability to time travel because I am a huge history buff and would love to travel to my favorite eras throughout history.

Who is your style icon?
SA: I absolutely love Zooey Deschanel’s quirky, vintage style. If I had the time and money to devote to my own style I would kill for her hair and wardrobe. But if I am being completely honest I am lucky if I change out of sweatpants these days. My son is always dressed impeccably and I look like I rolled out of bed. I am working on it though!

What is your favorite item currently in the shop?
SA: Easily, our #kidsforchange line. It was the biggest risk we have taken thus far and has definitely been our greatest reward. We are pushing boundaries and pissing people off but we are also sparking discussions and raising awareness. We were expecting a lot more backlash than we have received and have been so touched by the stories pouring in about why people feel passionate about the individual causes. It’s hard to make a difference when you are just selling T-shirts but we are in our own way.

What is the most embarrassing fashion trend that you used to love?
SA: Gah! I grew up in the ’80s and ’90s so I have been through my fair share of cringe worthy fashion trends. The first one that came to mind was the early 2000s Air Force Ones days. I had a pair to match every outfit. It was not my best year fashion wise.

What is your guilty pleasure?

SA: The Golden Girls. It’s embarrassing how much I love that show. I am essentially an 80-year-old trapped in a 32-year-old body. Even more embarrassing, I would totally be the Dorothy of the group.

How did you get the name for your shop?
SA: Baltimore, hon! Baltimore is best known for two things to people who live outside the city: The Wire and Hons. Thus, Wire and Honey.

What is your favorite saying/motto?
SA: “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality.” -Desmond Tutu

No closet is complete without…
SA: Colorful flats. My favorite are Tieks. A cute, colorful flat can make even the simplest outfit fun and put together. Plus, I chase around a toddler all day long so my days of platforms and heels are long gone.

What is your current favorite trend? Least favorite trend?
SA: I am kind of loving the micro pleats trend. It is one of the few trends from the late 80s/early 90s that I am glad to see back. Issey Miyake’s runway style has always made me swoon. My least favorite trend has to be the latest developments in denim. I love destructed jeans but I can’t bring myself to like the patterns and embellishments that are making their way back in these days. Also, mom jeans and overalls. I’m a firm believer that with denim the more simple and classic, the better.

First off, can you explain what you do and the kind of art that you create?
Juliet Ames: I make all sorts of things out of recycled china. It started with
jewelry, but now I am experimenting with more 2D art. I do a lot of
custom work with my customers’ sentimental China shards.

How did the trip to Hong Kong come about?
JA: I got an email just a few weeks ago inviting me to Hong Kong to have a solo exhibit. Of course, I assumed it was a joke or scam, but curiosity lead me to ask more questions. I’m sure glad I did! They found me on the internet and thought it would be fun to put on an beautiful, floral-themed exhibit featuring broken plates.

There are a ton of huge, beautiful high-end malls in Hong Kong—Armani, Gucci, Prada, and the like are all over. You know how we have
Walgreen’s on every corner? Like that. These malls are all competing for
the same customers so they put on exhibits like
this to stand out from the crowd and attract visitors. The mall that I
exhibited in, Pioneer Centre, put so much thought and love into these
exhibits, and it shows to their customers. It also attracts press to
their mall.

It sounded too good to be true, but I sent off 20 complete sets of jewelry with matching plates for the show, as well as six framed art pieces and framed photos of past sets. Everything made it, intact in just a few days.

How long were you in Hong Kong?
JA: I was there from Sunday-Thursday. It was about a 20-hour flight, and my first thought upon landing was, ‘Holy crap! This is REAL!’

Can you tell me about the art show you put on while you were there?
JA: It was incredible. There was an emcee who asked me some questions about my work and Mother’s Day traditions with my family. She translated for the audience. Models were on hand to wear my work. I presented a framed China replica of the mall to the top management, then we did a plate breaking ceremony, complete with confetti cannons. Following that, I did a demo of my soldering process, did some newspaper interviews, and took a ton of photos. I felt like a total rockstar.

You posted a lot of food photos on your Instagram while on your trip. What was the best thing that you ate?
JA: There was so much great food, which is why I had to photograph it
all. They joked that I was great with chopsticks, but didn’t eat enough. My host was incredible and took
me for as many traditional foods as time would
allow. We enjoyed dim sum at Tim Ho Wan, which is proud to be the world’s
cheapest Michelin-rated restaurant. We also enjoyed dumpling and noodles
at Lau Sum Kee where they are known for making noodles in the
traditional way, with large bamboo poles. Another
great meal, where we celebrate that our big opening was over and successful, was
at Jing Hau. Plates just kept coming out of the kitchen, the last being
lobster on noodles. I will have to train for my next trip so I am
prepared to eat more.

A meal that wasn’t incredible, but made me really happy, was on
the second morning when I got the guts to walk into a McDonalds with my
Hong Kong money, get a breakfast sandwich, and use their Wi-Fi. Seeing
the children in their adorable uniforms
sharing a breakfast before school was really fun.

What was your most memorable moment from your trip?
JA: I am still processing the whole trip. We did about 10 miles of walking and sight-seeing every day. Visiting Victoria Peak and looking at the whole city at night was awesome. One of the coolest things I saw while sightseeing was a place called PMQ in central. It was an old police station converted into studio spaces for artists. Would love to see something like that here. But I will never forget that opening ceremony of the show. It was like a dream.

Are international trips something you hope to do more of in the future? Ideally, where would be your next destination?
JA: While I was there, there was a little talk of trying to take this show
to China, too. They were so excited about this idea and think that people
from other countries would really love to learn more about it. In a
dream world, I would love to visit Dubai, Japan, and India too.

“With its robust office and business traveler population, the neighborhood is terrific fit for us,” Paul Grangaard, Allen Edmonds’ president and CEO said in a press release. “We look forward to serving both our loyal Allen Edmonds customers, as well as gentlemen new to the brand, in such a vibrant urban setting.”

The new location will occupy approximately 1,300 square feet at 635 President Street in the former Starbucks space between the Hilton Garden Inn/Homewood Suites and Landmark Theaters. Although several department stores and other premier men’s shoe stores in Maryland carry Allen Edmonds product, the Harbor East location will be the store’s only location in the state.

Glow Ride

Illuminated Yoga
March 30, 8-9 p.m., Area 10. If you like yoga, being outside, and body paint then this is the class for you. Medifast and Waterfront Partnership have partnered with Yogaworks to host illuminated yoga at Area 10, the grassy area by the World Trade Center and the National Aquarium. This is a mixed level class and every participant will receive glow necklaces, bracelets and glow body paint to illuminate their flow.

Light City Fun Run

LS: It was a Richard Brautigan novel. It was a friend of mine’s favorite book.

CV: I love Tory Burch because she’s very simple and that’s kind of how we’ve modeled the store too, where it’s simple but pretty and easy to shop.

CV: Always our champagne bears. We have champagne gummy bears that are infused with Dom Perignon bubbles. They’re amazing.

CV: Cargo pants, like big cargo pants with tank tops.

CV: I used to live in Austin, TX, and there is all kinds of really cool, funky boutiques so I really wanted to have a cool name that would stand out and be very brand-able, so as we continue to expand we’d have something that would have an impact name, so to speak.

CV: My favorite trend that is getting bigger and bigger is the high-waisted pants, skirts, and things like that with crop tops. My least favorite, which is actually kind of interesting, is the crop tops that are really really short. The first trend is really wearable for a bunch of different body types. You don’t have to be super skinny to be able to wear the crop tops with high-waisted bottoms and it’s really flattering. But then the opposite is the really short crop tops, which nobody can wear.

Susannah Siger: Girly heaven, with a liquor Bonbon on top.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
SS: Teleportation, especially to other cities for the weekend.

Who is your style inspiration?
SS: I want to say, like, Twiggy mixed with Bridget Bardot and Sophia Loren. Definitely the ’60s meets the ’80s a little bit. I think I have a pretty experimental style.

What is your favorite item currently in the store?
SS: The Jeffrey Campbell “Flutterby” flats

What is the most embarrassing trend you used to love?
SS: The cutoff sweatshirt, like the Flashdance raw edge sweatshirt. In high school I would wear a lot of my mom’s clothes from art school. I would come down in punk rock ’80s and my mom would be like, ‘What are you wearing?’ and I would say, ‘You can’t be mad. They’re your clothes.’ Both my mom and my grandmother sewed, so they were both into DIY fashion before there was a word for it. I learned how to sew from them really early on, and that was a big deal to be able to be on my mom’s sewing machine.

How did you get the name for your boutique?
SS: It’s based on mon petit chou, or my little darling in French. So it’s a play on words between the French and the English.

Do you have a go-to saying or motto?
SS: Per aspera ad astra, reach for the starts in Latin.

SS: A great pair of shoes! That’s a predictable one.

What are your current favorite and least favorite trends?
SS: I definitely love anything retro, nostalgic, and romantic. You can’t really hate a trend because it’s gone before you know it. I do encourage individualism, and that can be pretty anti-trend. Even though I’m definitely in the business of trying to see the trends, I try to choose designers who have their own statement.
