As the sun beats down on Baltimore in these dog days of summer, everyone could use an excuse to cool off. And spots all across Charm City are offering unbeatable drink specials on Wednesday, July 24 in honor of one of our country’s most arbitrary holidays: National Tequila Day.

Taking the cake for, perhaps, the most creative drink we’ve seen in tequila’s honor is one that seems to intoxicate and re-hydrate you at the same time: a frozen Patron Pedialyte margarita (Patron Silver, strawberry or blue raspberry pedialyte, lime, and agave) created by bar manager Liz Jankiewicz of Ouzo Bay and Ouzo Beach.

“Not only is it good to throw some electrolytes at the guest while it’s hot out,” Jankiewicz says, “but it actually pairs really well with the tequila because of the level of salinity in it. Just like if you’re having your margarita with salt on the rim.”

And this holiday will be a chance for those who haven’t made it out of town this summer to get a taste of an island vacation: “Having a margarita taps into the idea of a destination,” Jankiewicz says. “It turns your normal watering hole turns into a getaway.”

Whether you want to sip on a frozen margarita, or throw back shots like it’s your day job, there are plenty of places to partake. So get your sliced limes and salted rims ready, and check out some of the best spots to spend the holiday.

Blue Agave: Named after tequila’s essential ingredient, this Federal Hill destination is certainly ringing in the holiday with cheer. The bar will feature $2 discounts on all-things tequila-related, including margaritas, flights, and shots, as well as discounted bottle club membership offers. And with their featured tequila of the month being Casamigos, no one will leave unsatisfied.

Canton Crossing Wine & Spirits: If you’re looking for a bargain, this Canton spirits shop will offer free—yes, we said free—samples of various Rooster Rojo tequilas, which are made from 100 percent Blue Weber agave. Make sure to swing by between 4 and 6 p.m. to try blanco, reposado, and anejo varieties.

El Bufalo Tequila Bar & Kitchen: Wondering why this Canton spot is a rightful place to celebrate the Mexican spirit? The name speaks for itself. El Bufalo’s specials include $6 shots and $8 margaritas that make use of the restaurant’s catalog of more than 50 tequila brands. Any purchase of a Casamigos, Don Julio, or Olmeca Altos drinks will get you a raffle ticket for a Bottle Club giveaway.

Lee’s Pint & Shell: This Canton haunt is the place to be for Don Julio fans. Lee’s is offering a $10 deal that includes two 5-oz. margaritas, a shot of anejo, and a shot of blanco—all of the Don Julio variety.

Nacho Mama’s: Both the Towson and Canton locations of this Elvis-themed cantina will feature all-day specials for tequila lovers. Flights of Casamigos, Patron, and Herradura will be served along with presentation mats and tasting notes. If you’re not up for that, try a special shot in one of the bar’s renowned hubcap margaritas. We recommend the “Pama Sunset” (Pomegranate liqueur, house tequila, and homemade lime mix), the “Blue Suede Shoes” (El Jimador, Blue Curacao, and homemade lime mix), or the “King” (Don Julio Reposado, Limeade, and Grand Marnier float).

Ouzo Bay: Harbor East’s Mediterranean mainstay is offering a lineup of can’t-miss cocktails for the holiday. Mention this very write-up for $9 drinks like the “Aleppo Pines” made with Patron Roca Silver, yellow chartreuse, retsina reduction, oregano honey, and lemon. Or, head across the street to it’s outdoor sister bar Ouzo Beach for the frozen Pedialyte margarita or a “Paloma Collins” (Patron Roca Silver, pamplemousse, honey, lime, club soda, and salt and a tri-peppercorn rim). All frozen Patron drinks at Ouzo Beach are blended using a stationary bike, so be prepared to bike your own drink if you choose.

Vida Taco Bar: Casamigos is the tequila of choice at this fan-favorite taco joint. Locations in Annapolis, Severna Park, and Harbor Point will serve $10 Casamigos cocktails all day long. Specials include the “Basic” (Casamigos Reposado, Fever-Tree citrus tonic, and fresh lime), the “Mexican Spa Day” (Casamigos Blanco, Fever-Tree cucumber tonic, and fresh mint), and the “Smokey Ginger” (Casamigos Mezcal and Fever-Tree smokey ginger ale).

July 14: The Night Brunch at South Point

South Point, Port Covington, 101 West Cromwell St. 6-11 p.m. $10.

We love a good brunch, but who says you can only eat eggs Benedict and bacon in the morning? Step outside the norm with this popular evening brunch series which, for the very first time, will host local foodies for brunch cocktails and eats on a Sunday night instead of its usual weeknight slot. Head to South Point in Port Covington to sample bites courtesy of the seasonal waterfront location, and, if that’s not convincing enough, a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Night Brunch Summer Lunch Program that distributes meals to Baltimore City kids.

DRINK

July 13: Lee’s Christmas in July

Lee’s Pint & Shell, 2844 Hudson Street. 11 a.m. Free.

Are you already counting down the days until it’s socially appropriate to wear Christmas sweaters, hang red-and-green decorations, and sip holiday ales? Well, look no further than this boozy Christmas in July celebration. Don your (most lightweight) festive garb and revel in the holiday cheer at this Canton corner bar with $1 Rumple shots and $5 Mad Elf drafts all afternoon long. Come dressed to impress (antlers encouraged) and bring a new unwrapped gift for Toys for Tots for the chance to win a $100 gift card.

July 14-Jan. 5, 2020: Isaac Julien: Baltimore and Every Day: Selections from the Collection

Baltimore Museum of Art, 10 Art Museum Dr. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Free.

This Sunday, the Baltimore Museum of Art will unveil two new exhibitions, Isaac Julien: Baltimore and Every Day: Selections from the Collection. Explore the past, present, and future of African-American culture with filmmaker Isaac Julien’s video installation about two individuals making their way through Charm City’s significant cultural sites, such as the Walters Art Museum and the Great Blacks in Wax museum. The BMA will also debut the first reinstallation of its contemporary collection about the black artistic imagination—showcasing nearly 50 photographs, sculptures, videos, and prints that emphasize how African-American artists have shaped modern art.

July 14: Charm City Junction

Ladew Gardens, 3535 Jarrettsville Pike. 6-8 p.m. Free-$9.

This Monkton topiary garden will be hosting outdoor jams all summer long, but we’re particularly excited to hear bluegrass group Charm City Junction take on the laid-back soiree. The acoustic quartet is sure to get you groovin’ in the grass with old-time rhythms and foot stomping Irish melodies. Find a space on the picture-perfect garden to hear the folksy band take roots music to new heights with the sounds of the fiddle, expressive clawhammer banjo, harmonic button accordion, and upright bass.

July 13-14: Baltimore Washington One Carnival

Lake Clifton Park, 2801 Harford Road. 12 p.m. $15-20.

Experience rich Caribbean culture during this two-day festival at Lake Clifton Park, featuring energetic music beats, international flavors, and, of course, tons of feathered and sequined costumes. Don’t miss the Saturday parade featuring color-filled masqueraders, drummers, stilt walkers, floats, and steel bands. After sampling authentic eats such as mouth-watering jerk chicken, spend the afternoon jamming along to live music by Pan Masters Steel Band, Trinidadian singer Nadia Batson, and Strykers Posse Reggae Band.

OPEN

Tiki Lee’s: Fans of Lee’s Pint & Shell in Canton will be happy to hear that this new sister-spot has officially debuted on the water in Sparrows Point. The dockside oasis at North Point Cove serves as an ode to owner Dave Carey’s late father, Lee—an avid fisherman who loved spending time relaxing outdoors. During the official grand opening last weekend, revelers flocked to the long-awaited destination to cool off with frozen cocktails and vodka drinks while enjoying summer fare like crab cakes, shrimp salad wraps, and house salads topped with jerk chicken. Diners can experience the hyper-local feel inside (the dining room includes nods to Old Bay, the Orioles, and Bethlehem Steel) or the island vibe outside, which is equipped with palm trees, strung lights, ample boat slips, and plenty of sand to feel between your toes. 4309 Shore Drive, Sparrows Point. 443-242-6698

COMING SOON

Venice Tavern: In the realm of old-school Baltimore dive bars, Venice Tavern is one of the greats. The Highlandtown hangout has been around since 1933, when original owners Frank and Victoria DeSantis opened it in the basement of their home after the repeal of Prohibition. Soon, fourth-generation owner Damion DeSantis will expand the pub’s legacy by opening a second Venice Tavern on Eastern Avenue next to La Scala in Little Italy, according to liquor board documents. The new Venice Tavern marks Damion’s return to the building—which previously housed his former concept Dego Dames before it closed in 2010. This time around, the new space will take after the beloved cash-only flagship in Highlandtown, which has built a reputation for its $3 pints, well-worn pool table, and walls collaged with portraits of boxing champions. 1018 Eastern Ave.

(RE) OPEN

Bluebird Pub: Just a few days after its grand opening on May 10, this refreshed concept below The Bluebird Cocktail Room in Hampden was forced to close due to a flooding issue that caused significant damage to the subterranean space. But now, after a few weeks of cleanup and repairs, the pub is back at it for take two. Resuming normal hours—noon to 10 p.m. Thursday through Sunday and noon to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays—the bar will highlight a menu of elevated pub fare and a strong lineup of whiskey drinks. Pair eats like a foie gras burger and vegetarian broccoli sandwich with cocktails including an Old Grand-Dad bonded bourbon Old Fashioned or a barrel-aged Cachaça Sour shaken with lemon juice and sugarcane. 3600 Hickory Ave. 667-303-3263

EPICUREAN EVENTS

5/31: Clavel Pop-Up at Union
Chef Carlos Raba is rounding up his team from Clavel and heading to Union Craft Brewing for this Friday-night pop-up in Hampden. Snag a spot on Union’s patio to kick off the weekend by sipping craft beers and filling up on tacos and ceviche by Clavel. The soundtrack for the free event will be provided by DJ Rezzy Ron. 1700 W. 41st St. 6-9 p.m. Free

5/31: Getcha Lechón Pig Roast at Broadway Market
El Tigre, the outdoor bar program at the newly renovated Broadway Market, is launching food service with a Latin-style pig roast on the market’s patio this Friday. Flock to Fells Point to enjoy a plate of slow-roasted Liberty Delight Farms pork with bottomless beans, rice, tostones, and all the fixins’. In keeping with El Tigre’s tiki theme, bartenders will also be pouring plenty of custom cocktails made with rum and Illegal mezcal. 1640 Aliceanna St. 6-10 p.m. $25

6/2: Coffees of Antioquia Tasting at Vent
If you’re in need of a hangover helper come Sunday, Vent Coffee Roasters is hosting this intimate tasting with its direct trade partner from Antioquia, Colombia. Stop by to sample three Colombian coffees while chatting with experts about coffee production and farming. The event is free, but registration is required in advance. 1700 W. 41st St. 1-2 p.m. Free

SHUT

Baltimore Built Bistro: We’re always sad to report the loss of a corner bar in the city, especially when it’s as short-lived as this Fells Point watering hole. B3 took over the former home of Bad Decisions just under a year ago, and shuttered its doors for good last week. “The team at Baltimore Built Bistro would like to thank everyone for their support,” reads an announcement posted to Facebook on May 24. “Unfortunately, we are closing our doors permanently.” Throughout its 10-month run, the neighborhood spot became known for its next-level bar snacks, loaded burgers, and signature cocktails like the Coldbrew Crush with espresso vodka and salted caramel Baileys. 1928 Fleet St.

Gourmet Again: Pikesville locals are mourning the loss of this decades-old fixture best known for its deli counter, salad bar, prepared foods, and kosher catering. Shoppers visiting the store earlier this week were surprised to see a sign posted to the front door announcing the closure. “The food business is very difficult, cutthroat, and competitive,” owner Andy Hoffman told Jmore earlier this week. “I couldn’t compete with the big guys. I just didn’t have that kind of purchasing power.” The closure is yet another hit to the community, which also said goodbye to mainstay Jewish deli Suburban House in 2017. All catering credits and gift certificates are being honored by former Gourmet Again general manager Jerry Schlichting, who now owns Clean Cuisine catering in Owings Mills. 3713 Old Court Rd., Pikesville.

Red Star Charles Village: This weekend will be the last for diners to chow down on burgers in the wood-stained dining room at Red Star in Charles Village. Marketing and operations manager Willy Dely recently confirmed to the Baltimore Business Journal that the extension of the original Red Star in Fells Point will officially close its doors on June 2. The restaurant opened in the Nine East 33rd development near the Johns Hopkins campus in the summer of 2017, offering a menu of burgers, sandwiches, pizzas, and bar snacks helmed by chef Francisco Lopez. It later became known for hosting weekly pint nights, half-price wine specials, and weekend drag brunches. The original Red Star, as well as its Fells Point sister-spot Waterfront Hotel, are both still going strong. 3224 St. Paul St.

Dec. 29: Wing Festival

Delia Foley’s, 1439 S. Charles St. 12-4 p.m. $25-30.

Baltimore is no stranger to outrageous food challenges (think the El Toro Grande burrito at Blue Agave or the Seafood UFO at Jimmy’s Famous Seafood), but Delia Foley’s wing-tastic festival takes it to a whole new level. Along with all-you-can-eat wings and drink specials, an entry ticket to this third annual event admits attendees into the speed-eating competition (yes, there is a trophy), a “facemelter” challenge featuring the highest sauce heat allowed per law, and a create-your-own sauce competition.

Dec. 30: Ravens vs. Browns Watch Party

Lee’s Pint & Shell, 2844 Hudson St. 3 p.m. Free.

There’s a lot riding on a Baltimore Ravens win against the Cleveland Browns this weekend: The chance to clinch the AFC North for the first time since 2012, a postseason spot in the playoffs, and, most importantly, an open bar at Lee’s Pint & Shell. Watch the regular season-finale at this Canton corner spot, knock back a few three-dollar drafts and five-dollar Smirnoff bombs and crushes during the game, and celebrate with a one-hour open bar with Miller Lite and Smirnoff if the Ravens head to the playoffs after Sunday night’s game.

Dec. 29: Glitter Ball

Creative Alliance, 3134 Eastern Ave. 8 p.m. $25-28.

New Year’s Eve may be known as the most glitz and glam-filled night of the year, but thanks to hosts and local burlesque performers Betty O’Hellno and Jacqueline Boxx, this Saturday’s Glitter Ball is making a run for the coveted title. Get dressed to impress (and sparkle) and head to the Creative Alliance to experience a winter wonderland-themed affair filled with circus performers, a Sparkle Market to add even more shine to your look, and an all-out dance party. For the main event, cheer on noteworthy performers like New York City’s Perle Noire and Poison Ivy during one of the most extravagant burlesque shows of the year.

HEAR

Dec. 29: Eze Jackson’s Dirty Christmas

Metro Gallery, 1700 N. Charles St. 7 p.m. $5.

As much as we love the holiday season, the annual agenda of attending one ugly sweater party after another and listening to the same Christmas carols gets old. Luckily, veteran local rapper Eze Jackson is throwing his annual anti-Christmas party in time to break you out of your post-holiday funk. Head to Metro Gallery on Saturday night to hear performances by rising rapper Locus, singer-songwriter Omnia Azar, and, of course, Jackson with The Backwudz Band. Pro tip: Bring a coat to donate and receive a free Flying Dog Bloodline beer.

Dec. 29: Kwanzaa Celebration

Reginald F. Lewis Museum, 830 E. Pratt St. 12-4 p.m. $5.

Whether you’re a practiced celebrator or simply want to learn more about the week-long holiday, devote the third day of Kwanzaa to this all-out celebration at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum. Visit the downtown museum to take in traditional African dance and drumming performances, learn more about the holiday’s rich history during workshops and lectures, and browse locally made goods in the African Marketplace.

OPEN

C&R Pub: We thought we’d seen the last of this Southern saloon, which used to be a go-to for honky-tonk tunes, life-sized Jenga, and Thursday “flip-night” drink discounts before it closed in Federal Hill two years ago. But old regulars will be happy to hear that the country concept has officially been revived—this time in Towson. The new iteration of Cowboys & Rednecks sits on the first floor of the mixed-use Towson Commons development along York Road. Featuring dark woods, plenty of flat screens, and a huge bar with more than 20 seats, the pub offers a barbecue-inspired menu listing everything from light bites to larger entrees. Specialty plates include the Rattlesnake Burger with jalapeño bacon, “Mountain Mama” steak salad, and signature “See Ya Later Gator” bites served with a zesty dipping sauce. 1 W. Pennsylvania Ave., Towson

Poulet: A second location of this popular spot off of Falls Road celebrated its grand opening in Timonium this week. Situated just across from the Maryland State Fairgrounds, the new eatery will offer the restaurant’s cafeteria-style entrees, sides, and hand-dipped ice cream in a much larger space that can seat more than 200. It will also feature an elevated bar program with a collection of small-batch whiskeys, wine on tap, and local craft beer from the likes of RAR and Union Craft. In keeping with its name, Poulet highlights rotisserie chicken and other proteins like sliced turkey, pulled pork, and grilled salmon. There’s also a lengthy sandwich menu, DIY burrito bar, and featured sides like scalloped potatoes and grilled cauliflower. 2235 York Rd., Timonium. 410-842-2270

COMING SOON

Lee’s Pint & Shell: Since rebranding from its former concept, Saute, two years ago, Lee’s Pint & Shell has become a favorite for Canton locals to crack open discounted beers and slurp down 50-cent oysters during happy hour. Now, the corner spot is rapidly expanding throughout the state. In addition to their dockbar Lee’s Landing in Cecil County, owners Bud Craven and David Carey are also planning to open a sister-spot in Sparrows Point this year. And, earlier this week, they announced that they recently settled on a fourth location on the Susquehanna River in Perryville. The old Perryville Yacht Club—which sits on four acres and has 80 boat slips—will soon be transformed into a Lee’s spinoff, with plenty of oysters, Orange Crushes, and seafood specialties to go around. 31 River Rd., Perryville.

The Urban Oyster: Chef Jasmine Norton’s beloved oyster bar will host one final pop-up at R. House next month before moving into a brick-and-mortar space of its own in 2019. The Urban Oyster plans to set up shop inside the former home of Ruby 8 Noodles & Sushi at McHenry Row in Locust Point early next year. Norton recently told The Baltimore Sun that the new eatery will provide kitchen space for her to prepare for farmers’ markets and festivals, while also acting as a permanent outpost for diners to find her oyster-inspired eats any time. Menu favorites include chargrilled oysters with parmesan and lemon-garlic butter, fried oyster tacos, a classic crab cake sandwich, and, of course, raw oysters on the half shell. 1702 Whetstone Way

John Brown Butchery Adds Antique Shop: As the temperatures continue to drop and the holiday season approaches, it’s the perfect time to pay a visit to this hybrid-butchery, cafe, general store, and coffee shop in Cockeysville. Not only is the destination offering a wide selection Thanksgiving turkeys and holiday meats this season, but it has also added a new antiques shop, Hedgerow, for shoppers looking for unique gifts and decorations. Stop by the butchery to chow down on a cold cut sandwich or meatball sub before browsing the one-of-a-kind artwork, china, and table centerpieces at the new antique store. 13501 Falls Rd., Cockeysville. 410-891-8549

Hotel Monaco Wins Northstar Meetings Group Award: Congratulations are in order for downtown’s Kimpton Hotel Monaco, which recently received the 2018 Stella Award for Best Boutique Property in the Northeast region. Northstar Meetings Group presented the award to honor the hotel’s excellence in the meetings industry—considering its food and beverage program, staff professionalism, technological amenities, and more. The hotel, which houses celebrated bar and restaurant B&O American Brasserie, was one of 532 global properties nominated in 18 categories. 2 N. Charles St. 443-692-6170

11/17: Oyfest 5
The teams behind Union Craft Brewing, The Local Oyster, and True Chesapeake Oyster Company are coming together to host this fifth-annual festival at Union Collective this weekend. Grab a crew and enjoy endless shucks, draft beers, pizza from Well Crafted, and live tunes by the Ursula Ricks Project. If you’re really feeling festive, throw your hat in the ring during the annual oyster-eating contest. The $50 entrance fee, and a portion of all other proceeds, will be donated directly to the Friends of the Jones Falls Valley to keep our urban waterway clean and beautiful. 1700 W. 41st St. 12-5 p.m. $15-50

11/18: Put a Scoop on It Pancake Pop-Up with Big Softy
Detroit native Craig Falk, owner and executive chef of The Lunchbox Lady, is celebrating his love for pancakes this weekend by hosting an afternoon event with The Charmery owners David and Laura Alima at their shop in Towson. Falk’s Big Softy pop-up will be dishing out plain and malty chip pancakes topped with either blueberry or apple fruit topping. Each treat will be finished off with a scoop of any Charmery flavor, drizzle of Michigan maple syrup, and sprinkle of powdered sugar. 6807 York Rd., Towson. 10 a.m.-1 p.m. 443-275-2859

Ludlow Market: It was a short-lived run for this concept that took over the former Wine Market Bistro space in Locust Point last summer. In June, longtime owner Chris Spann reopened the 14-year-old restaurant as Ludlow Market, featuring a new menu by chef Christopher Audia, updated interior, and enhanced outdoor patio. But, sadly, the changes weren’t enough to keep the restaurant afloat. “I think ultimately we didn’t allocate enough marketing dollars to give the concept a chance to take hold with people,” Spann says. “That’s where we came up short. But I find a lot of solace in the interactions I had with guests who were so enthusiastic, and often giddy about some of the signature dishes we had put on the menu.” While the restaurant has closed for good, its adjoining bottle shop will be offering discounts on its remaining stock throughout the weekend. 921 E. Fort Ave.

Lee’s Pint & Shell, 2844 Hudson St. 12-10 p.m. $10. 410-327-2883.

There’s a cold front coming in this weekend, but that won’t stop this rebranded Canton spot from shucking some 20,000 free oysters at their fourth blowout block party. Rain, shine, or snow, duck underneath the heated tents to slurp down all-you-can-eat oysters during the last R month of the season, with drinks from the orange crush bar and live performances by local bands like Crushing Day, DJ Nick Paros, and Philly’s beloved Kristin and the Noise. If they run out of oysters, don’t worry—food stands serving up pit beef sandwiches and burgers will be on hand to soak up the crushes.

We’re impatiently waiting for weekends filled with sunny skies and backyard cookouts, but luckily, this two-day festival will have enough brews and barbecue to tie us over until then. This weekend, make your way to the Maryland State Fairgrounds for unlimited samplings of more than 60 beers, 40 bourbons, and smoky meats from local barbecue joints. While you sip on local brews from DuClaw, Flying Dog, and Monument City—or Maryland-distilled whiskey from Baltimore Whiskey Company and Sagamore Spirit—take part in a tasting seminar or compete in the stein-holding and bacon-eating contests.

We love seeing the way Light City’s art installations reflect off the Inner Harbor, but this year, downtown Baltimore will not be the only place illuminated by glowing sculptures and attractions. This Friday, the can’t-miss festival will kick off its third year with Neighborhood Lights, an artist-in-residence program that pairs notable local artists with community organizers to light up 14 city neighborhoods. Make your way across town to snap pictures of each location’s work of art during this one-weekend-only display.

The Crown, 1910 N. Charles St. 8 p.m. 410-625-4848.

After two months of performing up and down the continent on their biggest tour to date, post-punk quartet Natural Velvet finally returns home this Saturday to grace The Crown with its rip-roaring sound. On Saturday night, welcome back Kim Te and Spike Arreaga’s searing guitars, Greg Hatem’s propulsive drums, and Corynne Ostermann’s howling vocals as the band perform songs from their latest album, Mirror to Make You—and hopefully their latest cover of Britney Spears’ “Gimme More.” Don’t miss the reunion performance by local heavy metal band Ratboiler (their first show together in years), as well as other opening acts like Baltimore’s indie group Pinkwench and Richmond’s disco punk band Toxic Moxie.

It’s always tempting to sleep in on Sunday mornings, but we’ll gladly throw back our covers and brave the cold for the sweet smell of freshly-cut flowers and homemade bread wafting beneath the JFX. Now in its 41st season, Maryland’s largest producers-only market has become a true weekend ritual for farm-fresh produce, scrumptious eats, and one-of-a-kind vendors. On opening day, join in the hustle and bustle with a Blacksauce Kitchen breakfast sandwich in one hand and a Migue’s Minis made-to-order donut in the other. While there’s plenty to see, be sure to check out the 26 new vendors including Mera Kitchen Collective, The Urban Oyster, and Stupid Delicious Desserts.

Last year, Dave Carey launched Lee’s Pint & Shell, a rebrand of the former Canton brunch staple Saute, in hopes of attracting customers to a more relaxed seafood and beer bar. Needless to say, he’s been successful as neighbors fill up the barstools and pour in for family-friendly food events like this weekend’s shrimp and oyster roast. On Sunday, jump on the bandwagon for an all-you-can-eat feast. Peel all the shrimp you can devour—steamed with onions, potatoes, and Old Bay—and slurp back local oysters on the half shell. Wash it all down with a local beer and stay for the Sunday Funday after party with DJ Nick Paros.

The Pratt Contemporaries’ Black & White Party always falls in the dead of winter, yet the annual fundraiser continues to be one of the hottest social events in the city. Now in its 11th year, the party boasts its largest attendance to date as they move a new location, The Assembly Room, due to the library’s renovations. With a fresh Cuban theme, a nod to the 1950s paradise heralded by Ernest Hemingway, enjoy a brief reprieve from the cold weather with a night in Old Havana. Revel in live music, local eats, and a hefty dose of handmade cocktails—from classic daiquiris to refreshing mojitos—plus local beer from Brewer’s Art. Best of all, the evening benefits the local library system’s programs for children, teens, and adults.

COMING SOON

Union Collective: Locals have been patiently awaiting the arrival of Union Craft Brewing’s communal makerspace since it was announced last spring. The 138,000-square-foot Medfield warehouse will not only be home to eight small businesses including The Charmery and The Baltimore Whiskey Company, but it will also house Union’s brand new taproom, event space, and production facility. Though brewing isn’t expected to begin until the spring of 2018, earlier this week Union released renderings that give locals a sneak peek at what the space is going to look like. The plans by Ziger/Snead Architects depict a spacious taproom complete with interior greenery and glass windows overlooking the brewery. Also of note is the outdoor beer garden, which boasts a performance space for live music and strung lights overhead. 1700 W. 41st St.

Gordon Ramsay Steak: Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay is preparing to debut this new steakhouse inside Horseshoe Casino next Wednesday, November 29. The restaurant, which will take over the space that formerly housed Jack Binion’s on the first floor, will mark Ramsay’s first East Coast concept and feature an array of dry-aged beef and seafood dishes that serve as nods to his British roots. The chef joins other television personalities Guy Fieri and Giada De Laurentiis, who are also tied to the casino’s dining scene. 1525 Russell St., 443-931-4386

CH-CH CHANGES

Lee’s Pint & Shell: At a grand opening party last week, this rebranded Canton hangout (formerly Saute) debuted a state-of-the-art second story. Opening just in time for peak football season, the new space is equipped with 13 big screens, glass garage-style doors, a 38-foot bar with individual charging ports, and its own raw bar and oyster station. 2844 Hudson St., 410-327-2883

Riptide by the Bay: This Fells Point seafood stalwart is headed to auction next month. Husband-and-wife owners Roger and Meredith Rippel recently told The Sun that they are selling their 10-year-old restaurant to focus on raising their children. The duo hopes that the new owners will keep their current staff, and say that they are open to sharing some of Riptide’s signature recipes. The on-site auction will occur on December 14 at 11 a.m., with a starting bid of $750,000. 1718 Thames St., 410-732-3474

11/29: Traditional Basque Cider Dinner
Inspired by a recent trip to the Sagardotegis region of Basque Country, the team behind La Cuchara in Clipper Mill is recreating a traditional dinner with special cider pairings. The menu will highlight dishes including wood-grilled wild mushrooms, whole grilled rockfish with a burnt garlic vinaigrette, bone-in ribeye, and cider-poached pears. La Cuchara, 3600 Clipper Mill Road, Ste. 125, 6-8:30 p.m., $79, 443-708-3838.

SHUT

Center Cut Doughnuts: The revolving donut door at 3528 Chestnut Avenue in Hampden has spun around yet again. Sugar fiends probably remember farmers’ market-favorite Center Cut Doughnuts taking over the shop from B. Doughnut last year. And now, Center Cut owner Josh Kowitz is passing the torch to local baker Courtney Fix, who will open her donut shop Full Circle in the space next month. “We have decided to move on to other opportunities that will be better for our family,” Kowitz posted to Facebook earlier this week. “These words cannot convey the amount of appreciation we have for every single customer we’ve ever served.” Center Cut’s last day of service will be Sunday, November 26. The shop was best known for its fun flavors (favorites included brown butter, s’mores, and the pink-glazed “Homer” with rainbow sprinkles) and walls boasting local art. 3528 Chestnut Ave., 667-303-3604.

We could all use a makeover every once in a while. That was what Dave Carey thought about Saute after eight years of business in Canton. Located at the corner of Linwood Avenue and Hudson Street, the bar always felt a little stuffy to us—with higher-than-average price points, fancy entrees, and even a name that didn’t feel very Baltimore.

So Carey decided it was time for a
change last fall and remodeled the restaurant for six weeks. The result is
Lee’s Pint and Shell (2844 Hudson St., 410-327-2883), named
after Carey’s late father who was a seafood lover and fisherman. This new
version features a raw bar, reclaimed barn wood, vintage seafood posters, and sliding
garage-door windows.

The new menu, still headed by chef Mark Suliga, reflects the nautical feel with a lineup of steamed shrimp, clams, mussels, lobster, and oysters. Patrons will also notice welcome holdovers from Saute including the addictive pulled-duck nachos.

In keeping with its name, the new bar also boasts an impressive beer list, with 18 taps of mostly local beer from RaR, Union, Key, Flying Dog, and Evolution. Other creative additions are thoughtful whiskey flights and a menu of oyster shooters, including everything from tequila to Natty Boh.

	Nearly every time we’ve passed
Lee’s since it opened, the place has been packed, a testament to residents
wanting something more casual. And the night we went was no different. Every
bar stool and high-top table was filled, and the din in the room reflected
that. Needless to say, if you want to go out and have a quiet drink, then Lee’s
is not for you.

But the boisterous energy, with music and college football games on the stereo, didn’t phase us as we dug into a dozen Orchard Points—sweet and buttery oysters out of Chestertown. We also tried the pulled-pork fries, an epic mountain of meat with smoked chili barbecue sauce, spicy slaw with poblanos, and Gouda. This might be our new favorite hangover order.

To wash it all down, we were happy that Lee’s had one of our very favorite local beers on tap, the citrusy RaR Nanticoke Nectar IPA. Also of note was the Bourbon ’n’ Cider cocktail, served with ginger beer in a chilled silver mug. And we’ve got to give credit to our server and bartender, both of whom were extremely attentive despite the size of the crowd. Let Lee’s be a lesson to us all—it’s never too late to reinvent yourself.

The restaurant’s owners have been hard at work the past two months, rebranding the spot with updated furniture, garage-style doors, an expanded bar, and hand-painted murals that serve as an homage to Charm City. The space premiered as Lee’s Pint & Shell at a soft opening celebration earlier this week, and features a revamped menu showcasing everything from oysters on the half shell to Italian brisket. While a slew of new seafood options have been added, Sauté regulars will be happy to hear that executive chef Mark Suliga has decided to keep serving the restaurant’s signature pulled duck nachos. 2844 Hudson St., 443-617-7986

Khun Nine Thai: There’s nothing quite like a hearty bowl of Pad Thai or spicy shrimp soup when the temperature drops, and this new Thai restaurant will offer plenty of ways to get your fix when it opens its doors in Mt. Vernon later this month. Taking over the former home of Thairish on North Charles Street, the quaint lunch and dinner spot features sleek wood accents and brass hanging light fixtures. Executive chef/co-owner Khun Mae will fuse natural ingredients into his rotating menu of Thai soul food, which will feature dishes such as baked pork belly with lime fish sauce, red curry beef with pumpkin and green peppercorns, and roasted duck with bok choi and cinnamon soy broth. 804 N.
Full Tilt Brewpub: Full Tilt Brewing co-owners (and cousins) Nick Fertig and Dan Baumiller are making moves to the county in 2017. The brewery—which currently contracts out of Waverly incubator Peabody Heights Brewing—recently announced plans to convert an 89-year-old former police station in Towson into a new brewpub where diners can listen to vinyl while enjoying upscale bar fare paired with local craft beer. Renovations are slated to begin next month, and, if all goes well with fundraising, the brewery could open as early as July. 308 Washington Ave., Towson

<p "="">ELLICOTT CITY NEWS
Last week, pedestrian and car traffic resumed on Main Street for the first time since July’s tragic flood. As Ellicott City establishments continue to rebuild, the Restaurant Association of Maryland has established a new #EquipEC campaign specifically geared toward helping restaurants replace equipment (ice machines, food processors, deep fryers) lost in the devastation. Though an official date hasn’t been set, the staff will continue to announce updates on the restaurant’s Facebook page. Owners Richard Winter and Timothy Kendzirski were instrumental in forming the Ellicott City Hospitality Association, which organized multiple fundraisers with fellow industry professionals everywhere from Fells Point to Annapolis in the wake of the flood. 8308 Main Street, Ellicott City, 410-313-8141

Tersiguel’s French Country Restaurant: Just across the street, owner/executive chef Michel Tersiguel is gearing up for a grand reopening next week, as well. The chef, whose French-born parents opened Tersiguel’s in 1975, is using the comeback as an opportunity to get creative with the restaurant’s menu, which will now rotate every two weeks instead of seasonally. Pending final inspections, Tersiguel says that the restaurant could open as early as next Tuesday, October 18.
The Rumor Mill: In a message posted to its website earlier this month, owners Matthew and Lexi Milani announced that this New American bar and restaurant would not be reopening in its home on Tiber Alley in downtown Ellicott City. “Without the assurance that we could be open by the holiday season, we must move forward,” the post reads. “We will miss that building, where we have many fond memories of occasions that were important to us and to others.” The owners are currently scouting new locations for the restaurant to reopen in the future. 8069 Tiber Alley, Ellicott City.

The Charmery: The quirky spirit of this Hampden hangout is reflected not only in its inventive ice cream flavors (think earl grey gingersnap, cantaloupe pink peppercorn, and lemon cookie verbena), but also in its colorful décor. That whimsy is even carried over to its bathroom—an aquatic-themed treasure featuring hanging sea sculptures made out of ice cream spoons—which has recently been named among the top 10 water closets in the country in Cintas Corporation’s annual America’s Best Restroom contest.
