Why fall is the season for laser hair removal

If you’ve been wondering about laser hair removal but weren’t sure if the time was right, let the experts at Milan Laser Hair Removal in Baltimore help! Even though you’ve packed away your bathing suits and tank tops, these cooler months are the best time to invest in permanent results, the ultimate act of self-care to combat the seasonal doldrums.

Why Now?
Remember that lovely summer sun-kissed glow that’s now fading? That’s one reason fall is a good time to start laser hair removal. Advances in technology have made laser hair removal safe for all skin tones, but skin still needs to be its natural base tone to avoid complications. For this same reason, don’t use self-tanner products prior to treatment. So don’t despair that your tan lines are disappearing—that just means now is a great opportunity to have smooth skin in time for next summer!

Seasonal Timing
Speaking of summer, it may seem miles away but it will be here before you know it. Will your skin be bathing-suit-ready? Places like Milan Laser Hair Removal offer permanent results and procedures so quick you can squeeze them into your lunch hour. Still, after the first treatment, most clients require seven to 10 sessions of laser hair removal to be hair-free. Now, while you’re sporting stylish long pants and warm coats, is the perfect time to embark on this procedure. And you can still shave while undergoing treatment— just don’t wax, pluck, or thread. By starting your hair-free journey in autumn, you can have smooth skin by springtime.

Time is of the Essence
Good timing isn’t just about the seasons of the year, it is about the seasons of our lives. While your skin must be its natural tone to safely reap the benefits of laser hair removal, naturally gray hair is a no-go. That’s because the laser targets the pigment in the hair follicle to destroy it permanently. If there isn’t enough pigment in the hair, the laser has nothing to target. If laser hair removal is something you’ve been considering, start now before those tricky gray hairs show up like uninvited guests.

Unwind this Autumn

Summer is over and the pace of life is picking up once again. School, work, looming holidays—it can all quickly start to feel like too much. But autumn is also a time to get cozy, to nurture ourselves before the winter season and holiday madness. Now is the perfect time to take a look at your self-care routine and understand how CBD products can play a role in your overall well-being.

Goodness in Gummies

Plain Jane sells hemp and CBD products and was founded by local entrepreneur Lindsey Holthaus. While Holthaus explains that Plain Jane’s main product lines consist of CBD hemp prerolls, flowers, and joints, many of today’s consumers are interested in CBD edibles.

Better known as “gummies” edibles are the perfect way for someone new to CBD products to experience the vitality and soothing sense of calm that comes from CBD, the naturally occurring cannabidiol found in hemp. Whether you are looking for help sleeping, want the added benefits of CBD in your multivitamins, or simply want to ease anxiety and bring a deeper sense of calm to your day, low-potency gummies are an easy, discreet—and delicious—way to incorporate the benefits of cannabidiols into your wellness regime.

Looking for a low potency dose of CBD on days when you can’t seem to find a little sliver of time to yourself? Peppermint gum freshens breath, contains only 20 mg of CBD and no THC, and can be slipped in a pocket or purse. Perfect for on-the-go.

Beauty and the CBD

CBD is not just to be ingested. Applied topically, it has remarkable implications for beauty and skin health. Although research is still ongoing, early indications show that cannabinoids may hold qualities that help the skin heal faster, limit the growth of bacteria and fungus, and soothe discomfort.

“Research also suggests that cannabinoids applied topically may help with a variety of skin conditions and may improve the production of collagen, making the skin and muscles firmer and connective tissue and bones stronger,” says Plain Jane founder Holthaus.

Combining the healing benefits of antioxidant-rich cannabinoids with decadent salves, body butters, and creams makes for products that are a must-have to nourish both mind and body. Topical applications like CBD Silk Night Cream offer and ultra-luxurious, peptide-enriched moisturizer, while Milk and Honey CBD lotion leaves skin hydrated and radiant. Topical CBD treatments are an excellent way to cool down overworked muscles after the gym, relax at the end of a stressful day, or simply treat yourself to a spa-like indulgence without ever leaving home.

Share the Experience

They also make great gifts, perfect for the upcoming holiday season, or to share with friends on special occasions.

A mural painting project to highlight beauty in blighted neighborhoods. A community closet with basics like clothes, toiletries, and books. A reading program to teach elementary students about diversity through literature. These are some of the bright ideas that will receive funding this year to take effect in communities across Baltimore. And unlike many previous entrepreneurial or charitable ventures, these ideas all come from voices too often missing in the discourse about Charm City—kids.

Baltimore’s young people are brimming with brilliant insights and smart solutions to the challenges the city faces. Philanthropy Tank, a nonprofit that was founded in 2015 and brought to Baltimore in 2019, seeks to empower those young people to be the change they want to see in their own communities, offering the chance to win seed money, mentorship and other support as they pursue their ambitions. At an event on April 14, eight such young people—or CHANGEmakers, as Philanthropy Tank Baltimore Executive Director Nakeia Jones calls them—will receive funding for projects they pitch to a panel of investors.

“Our students are ready to take the reins,” Jones says. “It’s really about giving them the tools and support they need to execute on their ideas. That may be financially, or it could also just be through mentorship. Every student and project are completely different.”

Originally envisioned as a Shark Tank-style pitch competition hosted at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African-American History & Culture, this year’s finals will take place virtually. Still, the moment will be no less significant. Judges narrowed down a strong pool of 48 applicants, all students in grades 8 through 12, to eight finalists, vying for grants of up to $15,000. All of the finalists will receive some funding, but it’s up to the Philanthropist Mentors to decide whether to grant their requests in part or in full. And with so many incredible finalists, the decisions will be tough.

Take Samaya Nelson, who sees the city with an artistic eye and hopes her mural painting project will inspire others to do the same. Nelson, a Saint Frances Academy ninth grader, is a rising community leader, but the funding and mentorship provided by Philanthropy Tank will help her scale up her initiative. For Jones, young people like Nelson can offer adults in the city a fresh perspective.

“Change doesn’t have to be overcomplicated, the way adults sometimes think about it,” Jones says. “Just because a building is abandoned, doesn’t mean it has to look abandoned.”

Philanthropy Tank’s previous CHANGEmakers have demonstrated an impressive track record. Isaiah Dingle, a previous winner, founded Explo-Foods, growing produce in a hydroponic garden (a garden with no soil). He worked closely with Philanthropy Tank mentors to plan and execute the project and discovered a strong community partner in service organization Civic Works, which provides Dingle with space for his garden at its Lake Clifton complex. Ania McNair, another winner whose project, “Not For Sale Youth” brings awareness to the issue of human trafficking, has hosted rallies in Baltimore and Washington, D.C., held a month-long art therapy summer camp, is producing a workbook teaching kids about self-care, and is developing a curriculum to teach middle school students the warning signs of kidnapping and human trafficking. Students like Dingle and McNair really are making change, and this year’s cohort will be no different.

“There is so much strength in our students, and the kids in our city in general,” Jones says. “Support them, give them opportunities, and you never know what will come of it.”

Here’s the best part—you are invited to join the online event to see these dynamic young people and their ideas in action. Seeding this talent, creativity, and leadership in our young people takes a village. If you know a student who would make a phenomenal CHANGEmaker, or want to support Philanthropy Tank as a donor, mentor, or community partner, the April 14 finals is a great place to get started.

Kids these days carry the weight of the world on their shoulders. Their perspectives are often shaped by challenges that affect them, their families and their communities. More than ever, young people are stepping up to meet the moment, with fresh ideas and big ambitions to change their lives—and change the world. Here in Charm City, a new generation of leaders is already taking the reins, with a boost from Philanthropy Tank Baltimore and a ‘village’ of more established local mentors and investors.

Philanthropy Tank, a nonprofit which was founded in 2015 and brought to Baltimore in 2019, is giving kids the tools and support to take their own steps on the path of progress. Participants from grades 8 through 12 are invited to pitch projects to spread positive change in their communities, with grants of up to $15,000 awarded by local investors. Selected students—which Philanthropy Tank refers to as CHANGEmakers—are paired with local mentors to guide them as they pursue their ambitions and bring their ideas to life.

This year, a cohort of eight CHANGEmakers was selected from 48 applicants. On April 14, the eight finalists will receive funding at a final pitch event at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African-American History & Culture. Each CHANGEmaker is unique. One CHANGEmaker pitch will bring an artistic eye to blighted neighborhoods with an initiative to paint murals on abandoned buildings. Another will seek funding for a community improvement closet, providing people in under-resourced areas with clothes, toiletries, books and other essentials. Another will pitch plans to create a network of support for young people with incarcerated parents. At the April event, investors will determine how much funding will go to each project.

While local investors play a role in selecting and seeding projects, Philanthropy Tank’s dynamic mentors empower CHANGEmakers to carry out their visions at a high level and to have the confidence to face challenge, adversity, and unexpected surprises head-on. One such mentor is Stephanie Amponsah of The Dream BIG Foundation, a Baltimore-based nonprofit that incubates entrepreneurship in underserved communities. Philanthropy Tank Executive Director Nakeia Jones called Amponsah, “A shining example of leadership in action.”

Amponsah has served as a mentor for CHANGEmaker Ania McNair, whose project “Not For Sale Youth” seeks to bring awareness to the issue of human trafficking. A freshman at Morgan State University, McNair applied to Philanthropy Tank as a high school senior and hit the ground running after being selected for funding in 2020. McNair has hosted rallies in Baltimore and Washington, D.C., and held a month-long summer camp where participants used art therapy to unpack the link between low self-esteem and human trafficking. She is currently producing a workbook teaching the importance of self-care from a young age, as well as a curriculum to teach middle school students the warning signs of kidnapping and human trafficking. While McNair has owned her role as a CHANGEmaker, Amponsah has had a hand in much of McNair’s growth and development over the last year.

Although CHANGEmakers are typically assigned mentors at the beginning of their Philanthropy Tank journey, participants never know what connections they’ll make. D’mond Davis has provided meals to families of children living with chronic disease through his project “Hungry for Change.” Davis met Dorian Brown, the owner of Neopol Savory Smokery, when Brown agreed to allow Davis to use Neopol’s kitchen to prepare Sunday Suppers for Hungry for Change. They’ve since struck up a friendship, and their discussions go deeper than serving dinner, with Brown offering Davis crucial insight into fine-tuning his plan and approach.

Do you know a young person who would make a phenomenal CHANGEmaker? Do you have the skills and experience to serve as a mentor? Or are you interested in being a sponsor for another cohort of up-and-coming community leaders? This year’s finals event on April 14 is a great place to start—and you’re invited. Originally scheduled for February 17, the event was postponed due to the recent surge of COVID-19 cases, but is set to proceed in-person as planned.
Never before has our work been more relevant. The coronavirus pandemic wrought unemployment, isolation and disruption. It increased conditions such as anxiety and depression. The need for effective resources for those living with these conditions has never been greater and with that need comes an incredible opportunity.

Until recently, those living with mental health conditions often struggled in private. Today we have a greater awareness that our mental health is nothing to hide. Now is the time to make the most of this groundswell of compassionate understanding. Let’s break down stigma. Let’s talk about our mental health. We have the tools to provide those in need with the resources required to live fulfilled, productive lives.

A hallmark of NAMI Metro is our peer-led support network. Our volunteers bravely share their stories to help others. As the area leader for mental health awareness and education we’ve provided 9,000 touch points of service to people in the Baltimore Metropolitan area in the last year alone. While we work with individuals and their families, our mission includes outreach and training with some of the most influential people in businesses, colleges and universities, and emergency services.

Whether our work brings us to a classroom or a corporate boardroom, NAMI Metro and our many community partners are committed to removing the stigma of mental illness. We are proud to share in these pages just a few stories of how our work is building healthy lives for those living with a mental health condition and our community as a whole.

Let’s raise our voices,

➜ College is a time of critical development for young adults. It’s a time of important milestones that can also be deeply stressful. Studies show anxiety and depression are on the rise among college students and suicide remains the leading cause of death on campuses. Seventy-five percent of mental health conditions develop by age 24.

Understanding the importance of student mental health, Morgan State University allied with NAMI Metro four years ago to create campus-wide programs to destigmatize mental illness and promote wellness. As part of that commitment, Morgan participates in NAMI Metro’s “I Will Listen” program, a weeklong campaign to engage college students in conversation about mental health. The 2021 initiative included a chapel service, an open mic night, and a final “day without headphones” where everyone on campus was encouraged to wear “I Will Listen” t-shirts.

“We’re making a statement to our students that we’re here to listen and share your concerns,” says Danny Molock, PhD, interim coordinator for student life and development.

The pandemic makes this work more relevant than ever, explains David K. Wilson, president of Morgan State University.

“Covid has exacerbated the normal mental and psychological challenges that we see on our campus, as it has on college campuses across the nation,” he says. “But it is further exacerbated here at Morgan because so many of our students come from communities that have been disproportionately impacted by Covid.”

Wilson created a mental health task force to engage every aspect of the university in support of mental health. The university is proactive in its programs, bringing therapeutic pets to campus at exam time, sponsoring outdoor “Yoga on the Yard,” to promote relaxation, physical wellness and a sense of community, and offering depression screening.

Importantly, Wilson led by example, asking the counseling center to give a presentation on self-care and stress management to the university’s leadership team during the worst of the pandemic shutdown.

“It’s important for us in leadership to model this and we realize that we, too, need self-care,” says Wilson.

Morgan’s “I Will Listen” week attracted record attendance in 2021. Molock says they’re expanding into more collaborations with NAMI Metro, including a walk for mental health in the spring.

“This generation of students is more willing to share and more willing to listen,” he continues. “They want to be advocates in support of one another.”

➜ Officers of the Baltimore City Police Department (BPD) interact with people experiencing mental health crises every day. From those who experience homelessness and substance use disorders to typical 911 calls, an officer may never know when a situation might be exacerbated by mental illness.

Through training organized by Behavioral Health System Baltimore and community partners, the BPD is training cadets and seasoned officers on how to better identify individuals in crisis so interactions can end in compassion, not handcuffs.

“Crisis intervention trains officers to deal with a person in crisis in a very different way that now uses de-escalation techniques, time, spatial distance and the tools available to them other than force to get people the care they need, rather than taking them into physical custody and making arrests,” said Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison.

NAMI Metro facilitates multiple training sessions as part of the mandatory three-day behavioral health training given to all cadets and helped create new curriculum and experiential learning for the specialized Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) provided to officers on a voluntary basis. NAMI Metro expanded its training to 911 operators in 2021 and has trained nearly 2,000 emergency service personnel since 2016. The program includes partnerships between police officers, social workers and community services.

“An officer might be driving down the street and witness someone in crisis, or they may get a call to a home where there’s a potential family disturbance where the family is having trouble with a loved one,” explains Major Derek Loeffler. “The more training we can give [officers] to understand and respond to those situations, the better equipped they are to serve the residents of Baltimore.”

Not only does CIT provide vital information and tools to officers, Captain Joann Wallace explains that officers enjoy the coursework, especially the role-play that concludes the 40-hour training. Officers like Wallace act out scenarios so trainees can test their skills in a controlled environment before taking it to the street. “It’s a lot of fun and interesting and we’re able to give real-time feedback and the officers can ask questions so that when they take this training out on the street it’s become real for them,” she states.

Much of the training gets to the heart of strong community policing, where communication and relationships play an important role in public safety.

“Understanding crisis and responding to it appropriately without force reduces injury to both community and officers,” says Commissioner Harrison. “It also reduces emotional harm and litigation, which in turn builds trust.”

The greatest take away for officers is that regardless of the situation, don’t rush to a judgement or action.

Patrick Sutton

INTERIOR DESIGNER

➜ It’s impossible to miss the artistry of interior designer Patrick Sutton, whose work graces public spaces, restaurants and private homes in Baltimore and around the globe. He recently released his first book, Storied Interiors, about the stories our spaces tell about our lives and our dreams.

Sutton has his own story to tell, one that influenced the person and designer he is now. In her early 20s, Sutton’s mother began acting erratically. This was the early 1970s, a time when mental illness was simply not discussed. His mother was eventually diagnosed with schizophrenia and her condition became a family secret.

“As a little boy, you don’t know what’s going on you just know something is wrong. It was awful for a child such as myself because there was no support network,” says Sutton. “My mom’s illness was swept under the rug when what she needed was care. It was like living with a ticking time bomb.”

It wasn’t until later in life that Sutton understood the family secret was nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, it defined him as an individual. Lacking an adult role model for “normal” life given his mother’s condition and his father’s absence due to his career as a travel journalist, Sutton grew up being a student of other people, an observer. That skill, and his desire to create beautiful healing environments, informs his work today as a preeminent designer.

“Since I couldn’t heal my mother I’m constantly trying to create environments where I can heal others through design,” says Sutton.

When Sutton took his story public he shared his experience in a speech at a Design Leadership Network conference, an international gathering of designers. At that event he offered a candid view of how his mother’s illness shaped his life and design. “Over the next two days people came up to me individually —not just one or two people, but like 25—and shared their stories from their lives,” he recalls. “Sharing what happened to me gave them license to share what happened to them. That’s what awareness does. It gives people the freedom to know they are not alone.”

When Sutton shared his story publicly, an alliance with NAMI Metro came naturally. He explains that NAMI Metro’s mission to remove the stigma from mental illness is dear to him. His hope is that through his outreach others will learn that not only is mental illness nothing to be ashamed of, sharing one’s experience candidly can be empowering.

“It’s okay to seek help, it’s okay to seek therapy, which is a powerful tool,” Sutton concludes. “What NAMI is doing is shining a light on this, making people realize this isn’t something to be hidden, it is a part of life.”

Tchernavia Rocker

Chief People and Administrative Officer Under Armour

➜ As Chief People and Administrative Officer at Under Armour (UA), Tchernavia Rocker ensures that everyone from retail salespeople to executive leaders have a healthy, positive work life. To support that, UA has all the programmatic pieces in place—an employee assistance program, global mindfulness sessions, and No Meeting Friday afternoons in corporate offices, for example. While tools and programs are necessary, Rocker says creating an environment where conversations about mental health are supported has been an important shift.

“We’re creating an environment where it’s okay to engage and we talk openly about taking away stigma,” she says.

UA’s commitment to mental health is closely tied to its Teammate Resource Groups, small groups created within UA’s larger Diversity Equity and Inclusion strategy. These include Black and Latina employees and parents. UA partnered with NAMI Metro in 2019 to learn how to better support employees. Rocker can still recall the first listening session.

“It was the first safe space conversation we had,” she recalls. “We brought teammates together who, maybe for the first time, were talking about mental health. It was one of the most impactful moments of my professional career because I understood, deeply, what it meant for teammates to have a space where they didn’t need to hide anymore about the challenges they might be having…NAMI helped us facilitate those conversations, creating the runway for us to talk about how we can support psychological safety in the workplace.”

Rocker explains that storytelling and the willingness of leadership to guide from a place of their own vulnerability is critical. Rocker experienced this intimately when her husband died unexpectedly in 2021, understandably sending her life into a tailspin. When she told her boss, rather than just ask what she needed, he reached out to UA’s mental health providers to educate himself on how he could best support her.

“A month later when I returned to work he and I told that story to the workforce, of how I could go to my boss and tell him I was struggling,” she recalls. “By telling our story collectively, it opened up the door for other leaders to tell their stories and it was like freedom just ran through the door after that. It just takes one moment of vulnerability by leaders to create a safe space.”

UA advocates storytelling across its entire brand, supporting not only its employees but also its athletes, from the professional to those in youth sports, to be open about their experiences. The partnership with NAMI Metro helps the organization bring evidence-based expertise to help UA navigate this landscape in a meaningful way.

“Mental health is a broad spectrum including acute traumas and diagnoses that require a level of care,” says Rocker. “It comes down to storytelling and making sure that when people tell their story they feel supported and have the resources available to move forward. The focus has to be on creating the space and place to have these conversations.”

In the age of self-care, baths are a must. But the bathing we’re talking about here isn’t so much about a tub overflowing with bubbles, a glass of wine, and candles—although that does sound lovely. Instead, this is a bath with real therapeutic value. Shannon Vaughn, founder and CEO of Easton-based Pursoma, created a brand that focuses on healing the body through relaxation and organic ingredients. We talked to her about how bath time can be the end of the day detox your body absolutely needs.

What are the benefits of a bath time wellness routine?
I believe that bathing is exercise without movement. In the sanctuary of your own home, you can sweat and release stress without much physical effort and reap the rich mind-body benefit of deep relaxation.

What steps can we take to create a purifying, rejuvenating bath?
I love to think of this process as my mise en place—like the French-style of cooking. Grab a bathrobe, water bottle, face cloth, and bath soak treatment. Put your phone on airplane mode, turn on a soothing playlist, and run a hot bath as hot as you can withstand. Allow yourself to soak and sweat in the bath. I recommend 20-30 minutes, taking sips from your water bottle throughout the process. When you get out of the tub, wrap yourself in a robe or towel, and get under some blankets. This will continue the detoxification process for about 10 minutes. I like to follow up with one of the Pursoma body oils.

Is there a best time of day to do this?
On regular workdays, I take a bath every night unless I come home too late. I will especially take a bath if I have had anything to drink, because it detoxes the alcohol from the body through sweat. On the weekend, I do the same routine in the late afternoon as a way to relax and unwind.

Are there side effects of using bath salts regularly?
High-quality sleep! I feel more rested and productive when I bathe regularly. The side effects of bathing, sweating, and drinking water in the tub each night are clear, hydrated skin and a calmer nervous system.

How is Pursoma different from Epsom bath salts?
Most people don’t realize that Epsom soaks are not made with actual salt. Epsom is a manufactured product. By contrast, Pursoma soaks are made with all-natural, hand-harvested French gray sea salt loaded with beneficial minerals. Not only does this feel better on your skin because it’s hydrating instead of drying, but the body is also able to absorb some of the trace minerals. It’s an all-natural alternative and incredibly good for you.

Had a rough day or week? Need some “me” time? How about making the room smell good for a special occasion? Need something to go with that wine bottle? How about a candle? Whatever life brings, we need to cope and recoup. Because life happens.

Candles come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and scents. They can come in containers or as standalone pillar candles. They are sold almost everywhere, from big-box stores to farmers markets. But do you know what ingredients are in your candles? Some manufacturers list the ingredients used, while others do not. No matter which candle, it is important to know that the basic ingredients are wax, wick, and oil.

Did you know that there are different types of wax that can be used to make candles? In addition to the common waxes—paraffin, soy, and beeswax—several other types of wax include coconut wax, apricot wax, or a combination of the two. Waxes come in either pastille form, flakes, or slabs. Container candles that are in jars (mason, straight-sided, apothecary) use softer types of wax, while pillar candles typically require firmer types of wax.

Paraffin wax is one of the most common types used to make candles. It is inexpensive and works well with fragrance oils and colorants when used. Paraffin wax comes from different sources, one of which is petroleum, the same stuff our gasoline comes from. Paraffin wax typically burns faster and, more often than not, gives off soot.

Soy wax, which comes from soybeans, is another type that is becoming increasingly popular. Oil is extracted from soybeans and made into wax. Soy wax is, therefore, is plant-based and burns cleaner and slower than paraffin.

Beeswax comes from the honeycomb of the honeybees and other bees. It is usually a bit more expensive than soy wax and is available in yellow or white varieties. Beeswax can be used with or without containers and is either aromatic (yellow version) or non-aromatic (white version.)

And the wick? The role of the wick is to absorb melted wax to keep the candle burning. In order to burn properly, the wicks have to be able to absorb the melted wax at a rate that lets the flame keep going. Too big of a wick and the candle melts fast, too small, and tunneling occurs. (Tunneling is what happens when only the center burns.) Wicks come in different types—wood, cotton, and zinc. Wooden wicks and wicks with zinc wires at their core generally stay upright on their own, which makes candle-making easier. Cotton wicks need wick holders to stay upright.

And oils? Either fragrance or essential oil can be used to make candles. Essential oils are pure plant extracts, which makes them more expensive to work with, while fragrance oils are synthetically made scents are less expensive. Fragrance oils are commonly found in many scented products and the amount of oil added to the wax defines how fragrant a candle can be.

Bulk fragrance oils are usually sold in powder form, which are then reconstituted by suppliers, using “solvents” to turn them into liquid. Oftentimes, phthalates are used during this process. The jury is still out regarding phthalates, however, it is getting a bad reputation as a potential cause of negative health effects, primarily affecting breathing.

Wax, wick, and oil—they’re basic ingredients. But when mixed together, they produce a wonderful home décor that lets us add a nice touch to our everyday living space, wind down after a long day, or celebrate milestones and accomplishments in life.

MellyMani owner Melody Logan likes to bring the nail salon to you. While she once had a permanent station at Remington’s Studio L, her real passion is one-on-one experiences, whether at a pop up or private location. Her latest venture? Creating and selling her own line of vegan and gluten-free polishes.

On her start: The idea of MellyMani came up when my grandmother, who always had hot pink polish on her nails, mentioned she hadn’t been in a nail salon since the ’80s. I had an at-home gel polish kit and did her manicure. Every time I [visited her], I would do her nails again. It became a great way to connect with her and allowed her to experience nailcare and beauty from her home. I wanted to be able to do this for others as well.

On being a female entrepreneur: Manicures have been the passion for me, but the purpose was to empower women. In everything I do, I question first how it will help others. If it aligns with my mission and vision, I go for it. If it doesn’t, I’ve learned to be okay with turning opportunities down.

On gel, acrylic, and basic polish: My preference is gel because it is durable, long lasting, and gets you out the door without the worry of ruining your fresh mani. My opinion is honestly this: Nail enhancements aren’t “bad” for you. It’s the application and the removal that causes the damage. Ensure you have a well-trained technician who will dedicate the time to do the work, and be sure to go back to have them professionally removed.

On at-home manicures: Cuticle oil is an absolute must for everyone. Be sure to apply this daily to keep your skin hydrated. When the skin around your nails becomes dry, it is prone to infection, as the skin can break easily. Moisturize, too! Using a hand lotion and cuticle oil will help keep your nails looking healthy, and there is less chance you’ll pick at them for the nail biters out there. We are washing our hands more than ever and applying hand sanitizer non-stop; we need to show our hands and nails love through hydration.

On MellyMani nail polishes: MellyMani has partnered with Polish Change to formulate a nontoxic line of polishes that are also vegan and gluten-free. I wanted to create something that would complement every skin tone. My family is obsessed with coffee, and I’m obsessed with nail polish. Put that together and boom! The polishes were named after coffee, such as “Con Leche” and “Over Iced.” You can expect collaborations on more polish lines and products [soon]. I am hopeful that we will see the days where we can gather together again, and when we are able to, I’ll be popping up all over to do manicures.

A few weekends ago, I was having a bad morning. Edie hadn’t slept well and Lou was whining for canned whipped cream for breakfast. I was trying to cook unwanted scrambled eggs while Edie simultaneously demanded to be held while wiggling to get down. The house was a mess, the cats kept jumping on the counter, Lou was standing on the tops of my feet to get my attention, and I could feel myself coming undone. Intuiting my subtle behavior (I was a borderline monster), Rob neutralized the situation with an episode of Paw Patrol and suggested I take two hours to go do something for myself.

It turns out his acknowledgement was enough. Suddenly, having the choice to leave or stay opened me up to readjust my mood, and that slight adjustment was enough to buoy me back to homeostasis. I felt grateful to have a partner who recognized the need to take a beat, and that made me want to hang back and finish making eggs for him while our children picked Cheerios from between the sofa cushions. In the end, I stayed and enjoyed a slow morning with my family. But it got me thinking about all the amazing things we parents can do for ourselves in two hours. It’s the perfect amount of time to get out of the house and do something alone without carrying the guilt of leaving your spouse a man down.

Here are a few places where you can spend an hour of your time (with travel time and a stop for coffee built in) and restore your peace or body or sanity or whatever else those barnacles have taken from you.

Intuitive Wellness: I seriously almost didn’t include this one because its such a special, perfect place and I’m selfish and didn’t want to share. But who am I to deny the achy, stressed people of Baltimore their 60 minutes of holistic, healing, heavenly massage? Book an appointment at this Roland Park sanctuary and win the battle Legos have waged on your feet.

Movement Lab: Have you ever taken a sound bath? Or hung upside down like a beautiful bat? Or jumped so hard on a trampoline that not peeing yourself a little feels like a miracle of physiology? Movement Lab offers really diverse classes in an incredibly inclusive, accessible environment. I walked into my first anti-gravity (!) class thinking I’d be carried out by paramedics, and by the end I was trying to catch glimpses of myself in the mirror because I needed to see how cool I looked hanging upside down. (I actually looked pretty terrible but I was still wildly impressed.)

The Ivy Bookshop: Get a coffee, take yourself to The Ivy, and strike up a conversation with their staff. Let someone who knows and loves books guide you around until you find the perfect one. Remember that the internet is convenient but the algorithms telling you what to buy haven’t actually read the book. Use the remainder of the hour to read in your car with the heat on.

Lake Montebello: Do a lap or two. Parking is easy, the path is flat, and the lake is pretty. Get out and move your body while listening to a podcast (might I suggest Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend?). I’m also really interested in getting into roller blading, so maybe you could buy a pair and do that, and I can decide if you look cool enough for me to invest in the sport as well.

B.Willow: This is one of Lou’s favorite places so I feel a little bad going without him, but whatever. It’s a very calming space (they just opened a new Canton location, which I’m assuming is equally tranquil) and it’s so nice to wander around, choose a plant, dig in soil, and bring something beautiful into your home.

A bar: I have the great fortune of living within walking distance of several lovely food and beverage establishments, and have no shame in taking myself to a bar stool and enjoying a drink like a damn adult. Order something pretentious like a craft beer in a special glass or a cocktail featuring a mostly irrelevant garnishes. Pull out the book you picked up from The Ivy during your last jaunt, and pretend to read while spying on all the 23-year-olds complaining about how tired they are. Refrain from commenting because getting into bar fights is not what this restorative two hours is all about.

Collagen: A naturally occurring structural protein that is already in your skin, bones, and teeth. It provides elasticity to the skin, helping it appear more vibrant and youthful. Your natural production of collagen starts to dwindle in your late 20s and early 30s.

Microblading: A tattooing technique where pigment is implanted into the top layer of skin with a handheld tool. Hair-like strokes are drawn to mimic natural hairs in your brows to help with filling and shading.

Jade Roller: A handheld mini face massager made of green jade. It is said to reduce inflammation while stimulating the lymphatic system and improving blood circulation, which helps to brighten your complexion, tighten pores, and reduce the appearance of fine lines.

Microdermabrasion: A minimally invasive procedure where a special applicator with an abrasive surface is gently sands away the outer layer of skin to rejuvenate it, resulting in skin tone and texture improvement.

Glycolic Acid: An alpha hydroxy acid derived from plant sugars that serves as a chemical exfoliator. It gently resurfaces the skin by removing dead layers to reveal the more luminous skin beneath.

What if you were asked to name someone beautiful in our culture today? Who would you think of? A Victoria’s Secret Angel? A popular YouTube star? Idris Elba? Yes, they are all “beautiful,” but too often our definition of that word is way too narrow.

Whether it was the porcelain skin of 18th-century France, the slim silhouette and bobbed hair of the roaring ’20s, or the hourglass figure favored in the ’50s, the notion of the physical ideal, particularly for women, has evolved over time. But one thing has remained constant: a woman’s need to live up to those impossible standards in order to feel beautiful. Beauty standards are constantly shifting, even within our lifetimes (think the pencil-thin eyebrows of the ’90s and the perfectly contoured faces of the Kardashians so popular a few years ago). But now there’s a new wrinkle: We exist in a world where everything can be faked or fixed. Any imperfections or minor flaws can disappear with the swipe of a finger or the right phone app. And young women have grown up with this technology. We have been taught from a young age to alter ourselves in order to be beautiful.

The mass media leads the way by presenting and celebrating these ideals that are unattainable for most people and so often symmetrical, thin, and white. The images we are told to digest from big companies, celebrities, or Instagram feeds are oftentimes heavily Photoshopped and processed through many filters. The real danger starts when we begin to compare ourselves to these images. We aren’t born with insecurities, we are taught to be insecure.

Well, we say screw that. We are dedicating this entire issue to the fact that beauty is multidimensional and deeply personal. The truth is that beauty is intrinsic, existing naturally within us all, and the fewer filters we apply, the clearer it is for our inner splendor to shine through. When you view beauty through that lens, there is no room for harsh criticism or negativity (shout out to Travel + Leisure magazine, which named Baltimore the ugliest city in the country). We happen to think Baltimore is beautiful in its diversity, creativity, and humility.

We found all of those things and more in the following lively and candid conversation about beauty standards among five local women. And yes, while a good skin cream or proper hydration can do wonders, beauty is less a look and more a feeling. So take time to celebrate yourself and each other, as we are, and as we are supposed to be. Empowered.

How do you think your upbringing affected the way that you see beauty in the world?

Alexis Wilkins: I have a sister who is very close in age, and growing up we were always referenced as “the little dark one” or “the tall light one.” There was always a comparison happening between us, and it kind of made me crazy.

Dayna Bolden: When I was a young girl I used to always hear, “You’re pretty for a dark-skinned girl.”

 Wilkins: Yup.

Bolden: Like what does that mean? You’re pretty for a dark-skinned girl? Why can’t I just be pretty or beautiful? I never want my daughter to ever hear that. It’s just, “You’re beautiful.” That’s it.

Lauleh Aslani: It’s like a backhanded compliment.

 Dayna Bolden | Entrepreneur/Blogger

Bolden: It is. And as a child I didn’t get it, but now I get it. It’s like they were shading me actually. Wilkins: I hear the same things. “You’re pretty for a plus-sized woman.” Can’t I just be a beautiful plus-sized woman? Why is that separate?

Aslani: I used to get, “You dress really nice for a Muslim hijabi woman,” and it made me think, like, what’s your idea of a Muslim woman? What are you supposed to look like? I was born and raised in the Midwest and felt a clash of being American, Persian (my ethnicity), and Muslim (my religion). I hear from one side and everyone’s like, “You dress really nice for someone who wears a hijab,” but then the Muslim community is saying, "You dress too American.” Everyone has an opinion, and I definitely went through phases, but thankfully I had an older sister and my mom to help guide me through, because I would look at magazines or the internet, and there was never Muslim representation in the media.

Vanessa Ulrich: My mom is white, and my dad is Thai, and I had the benefit of living in Thailand for six years when I was growing up. My mom really helped shape my outlook on beauty and did a really good job of teaching me to love and appreciate all of my features. My eyes are like my dad’s, but my hair is more like hers, and it helped me create this whole sense of self.

Julia Marciari-Alexander: I grew up in the ’70s in an academic environment outside of Los Angeles, so it was both L.A. and academia all in a supercollider. And it was always, are you smart, or are you pretty? But really for me it was all kind of summed up in Charlie’s Angels, who were the famous people of my moment. You had Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson, and Jaclyn Smith, and you chose which one you wanted to be. Kate Jackson was the slightly homely, super-smart Angel, and so I always wanted to be Kate Jackson—mind you, I look nothing like her. But you had to make this distinction, which is just super false. You can be both, you can be neither, you can be you.

Ulrich: It’s when a person’s charisma, intelligence, humor, and kindness comes through. I mean, we all take so many pictures of ourselves, and that’s one way of us representing who we are. Looks are definitely part of it, but for me, beauty is really about personality traits that someone displays when you are right in front of them.

Bolden: I agree. It’s definitely an energy thing for me, because you could have the most beautiful person in the world, and if they act nasty, they’re not beautiful to me anymore.

Aslani: Someone’s personality really draws me to them and can make them seem even more beautiful. There are so many people who we follow online, and you might think you have an idea of who they are, but then you meet them in person and they are standoffish or different than you expected. But then you meet some people and they are even more beautiful in person because their personality shines through.

Wilkins: I think that’s how the digital age has changed things, because you can look at a magazine from 20 years ago and all you see is a picture, you don’t know anything about that person, but with social media you are able to show more than just your outward appearance.

Marciari-Alexander: I think when a person inhabits their passion publicly is when they become beautiful. You could call it animation or enthusiasm, but when you see someone light up from within and they become sort of iridescent because they are talking about something they really care about, that’s when you truly see them as opposed to the construction of themselves that they are creating. I talk with my kids a lot about the need to question people who are on YouTube and how that is their profession. You don’t know them. You may think you know them, but what you really know is the construction of themselves that they are presenting to you.

How do you think the concept of beauty has changed over the years?

Marciari-Alexander: I’m really interested in the notion of whether there is an inherent beauty that is beautiful to everyone or if beauty is always subjective. I think it is probably always subjective. We spend a lot of time and money as a society constructing norms around beauty that people feel they have to conform to. And that goes all the way back to the very beginnings of the Egyptian world. One of the things I love about this moment in time is that I feel like there might be a little bit of an explosion of the normative construction of beauty that comes down from one group in society. Whether you’re in the Far East, the Middle East, Europe, or America, each culture has traditionally had its own normative sense of beauty over time, but what I think is really beautiful now is that we are starting to see that those norms change even within one culture or across cultures.

Ulrich: And I love how social media has helped us to do that.

 Marciari-Alexander: Absolutely.

Have you ever felt stereotyped based on how you look? How do you deal with that?

Bolden: All of the time. As a black woman we’ll get stereotyped as being aggressive or being mean. For me, I just try to be myself no matter what and in any situation.

Wilkins: I definitely agree. The standard of beauty is different for black women. For example, you can have natural hair and be able to express yourself in that way, but I don’t feel comfortable doing that, and I think that is just based on my life experiences. I want to still have long, straight hair. My hair is not long, and my hair is not straight in real life, but I still look for those types of ways to align myself with that type of standard of beauty. It isn’t always the best thing, but that’s just how I feel comfortable, and when I’m comfortable, I feel beautiful.

Bolden: Even to this day if you Google “beautiful woman,” the first thing you are going to see is a white woman. I’m dark-skinned, and 20 or 30 years ago that wasn’t considered beautiful. It’s important for me to change the standards of beauty, especially for black women, by showing a dark-skinned woman that she is beautiful, that she can wear her natural hair and still be beautiful.

Ulrich: And I think for women specifically, the way beauty has historically been taught as the epitome of what a woman should be, it’s important to show all of the different kinds of beauty to young girls as they grow up so they know that there isn’t just one standard that they need to aspire to.

How do you think beauty standards differ between women and men? Do men have it easier?

Marciari-Alexander: Well, I can imagine that all of us get more comments on our clothes or on our hair or the “You look great.” But when you’re talking to a male museum director it doesn’t start with “Oh my gosh, you look great,” or “Your clothes are really tight,” or “Your suit is really inappropriate.” I mean, I have had people tell me that my skirt is too short or that my blouse is too open. Just don’t comment. It’s lovely and nice to have people say how great you look, but on the other hand, you’re like, I’m in a professional setting right now. Thank you, but hmm . . . maybe not.

Wilkins: I don’t know what male beauty standards are. There isn’t really conversation around what a man looks like. It’s more about what a man thinks or what a man does.

Marciari-Alexander: I am 6 feet tall, and my husband is 5’6” and a runner, so he is really fit and small, and he will tell you that in his career up until now, he’s always felt that he gets looked at differently because he doesn’t conform to what people imagine a man in his position to look like. I actually think that men do struggle with this, but we aren’t providing the language to talk about it. I love the idea of saying that there are implicit standards of male beauty or appearance, so let’s call it out and let’s say, “Hey, that’s not okay,” or “Hey, everybody looks great.”

Do you ever feel intimidated or weighed down by the pressure to look a certain way to advance your career?

Bolden: I think it can be hard trying to balance people’s expectations with my own brand and still remain authentic. Social media is constant, and I don’t try to be perfect, but I am trying to put my best foot forward every day because of the pressure. I have 65,000 people following me on Instagram, so it’s like I can’t go out and look crazy.

Aslani: I put pressure on myself, but in a good way, because I want to represent Muslim Persian women in the workplace well. If my appearance is put together, then I’ll get a positive reaction out of patients and out of my colleagues. I do believe that my wearing a scarf has helped me in many ways to get the job I currently have. When I was in school, professors knew my name the first day of class. I kind of stand out, and that can be a good thing or a bad thing. I see it like I am representing a tribe of other Muslim women, so I kind of need to have it together.

Ulrich: I work for a boutique health care strategy and marketing agency and deal with 99 percent of my clients over the phone, so I don’t have to do my hair or put on makeup for work. But then outside of work I try to look a little more polished.

Marciari-Alexander: I would say there is absolutely no correlation of doing my job well and the pressure to be beautiful or dress one way or another. Although the presumption is that people who work in the arts industry accessorize really well!

Do you have any insecurities that you will always carry with you?

Marciari-Alexander: When I would tell people that I grew up in California they would say, “No you didn’t, you’re not tan.” And the fact is, I don’t tan. I get really, really sunburned. I always felt that my super-duper white skin and my super straight hair wasn’t the picture of ideal beauty in the world that I came from. It was blonde, beach waves, and tan skin. So even though theoretically I have the same attributes as the standard of beauty, I never felt that way. Now, I got to age 50 and I was like, I don’t care, I’m fabulous . . . and my skin looks awesome!

Ulrich: I think for me it’s that I have under-eye circles. I have very thin skin like my mom and my grandmother, and so if I have one late night out I get bags under my eyes. I used to try to Photoshop them out of photos, but now I think maybe I should just wear them as a badge of pride, right?

 Marciari-Alexander: Absolutely!

Ulrich: Because I do a shit ton of stuff.

Aslani: I think it just says you’re working hard. You’re hustling!

Marciari-Alexander: It’s like gray hair. Ladies! Gray hair is awesome.

 Wilkins: I love your hair.

Marciari-Alexander: I’m not there yet, but I do it intentionally because I have so much gray hair now. My daughter’s like, “Are you sure?” and I say, “Yes, I’ve earned this!”

Wilkins: This sounds so horrible to say, but I have a lot of insecurities. Weight has always been my struggle. Stretch marks just started to appear places like on my belly and my arm. I thought you got stretch marks on your belly when you have a baby, not from just being a regular person. Recently, I went to a bachelorette party with my sorority sisters, and while I feel like I’ve grown to be more comfortable in my own skin, it was like zoom, I’m back to 2007 feeling like I’m the biggest one in this sorority line. I am constantly trying to combat that inner struggle. And through combatting it, I find my confidence.

Ulrich: It’s so important that we talk about the fact that we all have insecurities and off days. If you are in the public eye, people might think that we look perfect all the time, but that’s just not the case.

Aslani: It’s not a big insecurity for me, but I’m Persian, and all Persians get their noses done. It’s like a rite of passage, like all of my cousins got their noses done when they were 16. I think Iran, or more specifically Tehran, is one of the number one places for rhinoplasties. I was there a few weeks ago and my family were all asking me if I wanted to get my nose done.

Marciari-Alexander: I would give anything for your nose.

Aslani: And I always say no. I inherited my nose from my dad’s side of the family. I’m pretty happy with it, but thanks for pointing it out to me. So, I’ve always thought that my nose wasn’t perfect, but you know what? It’s my face. I don’t want to get another one. I’m happy with the one that I have.

Wilkins: I remember when I first realized that you could edit the width of your face on an app and I thought, “This is so amazing. I look so skinny!”

 [Everyone laughs]

Wilkins: Slowly but surely, I decided that I had to stop using this, because it was not truly me. If I’m going to have this blog where I am supposed to be about body positivity and I’m going in and making my cheeks a little bit smaller, then that’s not truthful. But I look at everyone’s pictures and I think, well, everyone else is probably doing it to some extent. The Facetune app is rampant, and everyone is going in there and changing their look. You don’t even realize it because all you’re seeing is this little square on Instagram.

Bolden: I have a daughter, and she watches YouTube videos, and I remember one time she was like, “I want my hair long and straight like her,” pointing to a little white girl in the video. And the little girl was beautiful, but I had to explain to her that’s not your reality. My goal is to just keep telling her how beautiful she is. I tell her she is beautiful every single day. I tell her how much I love her hair every single day. She has thick curly hair, and I tell her how much I love her hair every single day because I never want her to think differently.

Aslani: My mom always told me to not compare yourself to someone else, because you don’t know what they are going through, and you don’t know their struggles. As far as social media goes, people are only going to show their happy moments. I’m not going to share a photo of me when I’m sobbing and crying and can’t reach the 20 deadlines in front of me.

 Marciari-Alexander: No, that’s awesome.

Wilkins: I just turned 30 in April, and I went and got a facial and the esthetician asked what I needed, and I didn’t really know because I have really good skin. But once she found out I had just turned 30, she recommended the anti-aging treatment, and I’ve literally never even thought about anti-aging before, but that made me think maybe I should be. Brands keep pushing it on us to the point that you feel like you need it.

Bolden: I think people are freaking out over nothing, but I’ve also never gotten into the whole anti-aging thing. I just take care of my skin and don’t think about aging because it’s inevitable. Everyone is going to get older, and you’re going to age.

Aslani: I started using under-eye cream when I was 24 or so because I am predisposed to getting dark circles under my eyes. My mom always told me from the time that I was like 12 or 13 to take care of my skin. The products I use need to be preventative so that I don’t have to use dark spot anti-aging wrinkle cream in the future. Who even knows if these creams actually work? There are products that are upward of $300 to use on your face. I’m perfectly fine with the stuff I find at the drug store.

Ulrich: My whole thing is nutrition. I’m not afraid of aging, but I know that if I eat well now my skin will look good now and later. My mom’s a big hippie, so she’s always been all about science-based nutrition. I think the only thing she’s ever put on her face is glycerin, like actual 100-perccent glycerin from a health food store. Growing up, I never saw her with a skincare routine, but there was always a really balanced meal on the table.

Marciari-Alexander: As the old lady in the crowd, I would say that I am cheap, so I’m not spending money on that stuff! Someone once said to me if you start getting plastic surgery in your 30s or your 40s, you’re going to have to get it again in your 50s and your 60s. I think if we say we are proud of our bodies and ourselves then let’s be proud. We’ve earned our wrinkles, let’s own it. I look at somebody like Gloria Steinem, who I don’t think has had work done, and you look at Catherine Deneuve or Jane Fonda, and you can see the difference in how they look. One looks natural and proud, and the others no longer look like themselves. I think part of my aversion to plastic surgery was also that I got my hair done for a wedding when I was 30 and they pulled my hair so tight that it actually looked like I had a facelift. I looked so scary, and that was the end of that.

Wilkins: I think it’s just about overcoming the constant comparisons. That’s what really drives it and, in an age where all you are doing is looking at other people’s pictures, lives, and things that they’re doing, it’s so hard not to compare.

Marciari-Alexander: There is a really long history of putting people into visual boxes. This is why I think it’s important that we go to museums and that we learn to be incredibly savvy visual consumers. What we are doing now on social media is no different from what they were doing in 17th-century England or in an African country where they have beauty norms about what neck braces to wear, or in China, where they bound their feet. Every culture has its beauty norms, and those norms have been visually reinforced for thousands of years. We need to understand that it’s now human to feel like it’s our job to compare ourselves to others because we’ve been trained by a really long history to do it. We’ve kind of been brainwashed. But we do have the tools to become good visual consumers, and we have the responsibility to teach our families not to feel like they need to conform. Everyone needs to choose their own path, and I would just encourage everyone to step out and recognize that what is put in front of them and what is considered the standards of beauty so they can then decide what they want to do.

Aslani: I agree. I think it’s just human nature. It’s been a part of our history and will be a part of our future in the digital age. Everyone’s compared themselves to someone else at some point, but as you mature and get older and wiser, you’ll become more comfortable in your own skin. I am comfortable in my skin right now. People can comment and say, “You’re not showing your hair” or “You’re covering too much,” and your opinions are your own, but at the end of the day, I’m comfortable with who I am, what I’m wearing, and how I’m presenting myself, and that is when I feel beautiful.

But I have three young sons, and I see in my two older kids the stuff that bothers them. It may not feel like a big deal, but it is to them, and it’s important to treat it that way.

ON BEAUTY: Beauty is often not determined by us but is determined for us. It has become this tri-part entity where it’s what “society” says, what we think we are, and what others perceive us to be. What beauty really is is a series of smoke and mirrors.

ON SELF-LOVE: I identify as non-binary or gender non-conforming. So I feel my entire gender identity is forced onto me, and accepting this body as my body is something that I have to do every day just because people keep trying to insist that these physical attributes [looking like a “man”] mean something.

ON SOCIAL MEDIA: Being a black-identifying person, it’s strange to have your natural features demonized and then to see other people adapt them for themselves and be praised. Rather than people like me seeing this and thinking, “I’m beautiful,” we hate ourselves more because we don’t look exactly like those people. It’s a very strange cycle of self-hate.

ON SELF-LOVE: When I started to express myself through my outward appearance, I felt like what people expected of me and who I knew myself to be were completely separate. I think that’s what brings some of the shock value to people I meet, because the way that I look is different from the person they get to know. I can dress extreme, or I can wear a suit, but either way, it’s uniquely me.

ON SOCIAL MEDIA: I personally feel like if it has done anything, it has alienated more people or created such extreme standards that everyone looks like a clone. There’s no in-between space, and that’s so strange to me. There are very defined standards in pop culture and social media, but that isn’t real culture. Reality and social media translate almost like a text does to a phone call; they convey different tones.

ON SELF-LOVE: It’s never been something that I’ve had an issue with, but I have scars on my face. I’ve had them since I was two months old, and people are very sensitive about that around me, not realizing that because I grew up with it, I never look in the mirror and see my scars. It’s all I’ve known.

ON SOCIAL MEDIA: For guys, it’s very anti-selfie on social media. I hear selfies are anti-masculine, and I’ve even had a friend be like, “You post selfies? What?!”——but to me it’s just owning it. I don’t want to come off as vapid, but you know if I’m wearing a tux today, I’m going to freaking take a picture of it—it’s bad-ass.

In today’s world, wellness can be a very broad term. On its most basic level, it’s about making a conscious effort to attain health in both body and mind. But with so many diets, exercise options, and self-care alternatives, we can often feel overwhelmed with information.

That’s why Jess Waller—formerly of the creative community MakeTribe—developed WellTribe, a hub for women’s holistic health with the goal of creating a community dedicated to self-discovery and better living through nutrition and self-care.

Starting this month, Waller, a certified nutrition specialist with training in Western and herbal medicine, will be sending out a bimonthly WellTribe newsletter called “Tell Me Everything” in which she’ll address three subjects that people are always striving to improve: sleep, sex, and skin.

“All three of those areas I think can be treated through lifestyle change in food and behavior modifications,” says Waller. “Everybody has so much on their plates, but paying attention to your mental and physical health comes from self-discovery, and I think that also stems from being connected to a larger community outside of yourself.”

The newsletter will also contain a roundup of evidence-based research, as well as a curated selection of healing products and deep dives into hot topic ingredients. “There are no blanket treatment options,” says Waller, who also does nutrition consultations in Woodberry. “We all have bio-individuality. We are all different, and you sometimes have to dig down deeper to find the root cause of what could be causing us certain ailments.”

WellTribe also hopes to host mini-workshops and pop-up information sessions around the city with health specialists to bring together like-minded people who are looking to share their stories and connect.

“I just want it to be a space where people can support each other and support themselves,” explains Waller. “My goal is to inspire everybody to show up for themselves at the beginning, middle, and end of each day.”
