Unwind this Autumn

Summer is over and the pace of life is picking up once again. School, work, looming holidays—it can all quickly start to feel like too much. But autumn is also a time to get cozy, to nurture ourselves before the winter season and holiday madness. Now is the perfect time to take a look at your self-care routine and understand how CBD products can play a role in your overall well-being.

Goodness in Gummies

Plain Jane sells hemp and CBD products and was founded by local entrepreneur Lindsey Holthaus. While Holthaus explains that Plain Jane’s main product lines consist of CBD hemp prerolls, flowers, and joints, many of today’s consumers are interested in CBD edibles.

Better known as “gummies” edibles are the perfect way for someone new to CBD products to experience the vitality and soothing sense of calm that comes from CBD, the naturally occurring cannabidiol found in hemp. Whether you are looking for help sleeping, want the added benefits of CBD in your multivitamins, or simply want to ease anxiety and bring a deeper sense of calm to your day, low-potency gummies are an easy, discreet—and delicious—way to incorporate the benefits of cannabidiols into your wellness regime.

Looking for a low potency dose of CBD on days when you can’t seem to find a little sliver of time to yourself? Peppermint gum freshens breath, contains only 20 mg of CBD and no THC, and can be slipped in a pocket or purse. Perfect for on-the-go.

Beauty and the CBD

CBD is not just to be ingested. Applied topically, it has remarkable implications for beauty and skin health. Although research is still ongoing, early indications show that cannabinoids may hold qualities that help the skin heal faster, limit the growth of bacteria and fungus, and soothe discomfort.

“Research also suggests that cannabinoids applied topically may help with a variety of skin conditions and may improve the production of collagen, making the skin and muscles firmer and connective tissue and bones stronger,” says Plain Jane founder Holthaus.

Combining the healing benefits of antioxidant-rich cannabinoids with decadent salves, body butters, and creams makes for products that are a must-have to nourish both mind and body. Topical applications like CBD Silk Night Cream offer and ultra-luxurious, peptide-enriched moisturizer, while Milk and Honey CBD lotion leaves skin hydrated and radiant. Topical CBD treatments are an excellent way to cool down overworked muscles after the gym, relax at the end of a stressful day, or simply treat yourself to a spa-like indulgence without ever leaving home.

Had a rough day or week? Need some “me” time? How about making the room smell good for a special occasion? Need something to go with that wine bottle? How about a candle? Whatever life brings, we need to cope and recoup. Because life happens.

Candles come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and scents. They can come in containers or as standalone pillar candles. They are sold almost everywhere, from big-box stores to farmers markets. But do you know what ingredients are in your candles? Some manufacturers list the ingredients used, while others do not. No matter which candle, it is important to know that the basic ingredients are wax, wick, and oil.

Did you know that there are different types of wax that can be used to make candles? In addition to the common waxes—paraffin, soy, and beeswax—several other types of wax include coconut wax, apricot wax, or a combination of the two. Waxes come in either pastille form, flakes, or slabs. Container candles that are in jars (mason, straight-sided, apothecary) use softer types of wax, while pillar candles typically require firmer types of wax.

Paraffin wax is one of the most common types used to make candles. It is inexpensive and works well with fragrance oils and colorants when used. Paraffin wax comes from different sources, one of which is petroleum, the same stuff our gasoline comes from. Paraffin wax typically burns faster and, more often than not, gives off soot.

Soy wax, which comes from soybeans, is another type that is becoming increasingly popular. Oil is extracted from soybeans and made into wax. Soy wax is, therefore, is plant-based and burns cleaner and slower than paraffin.

Beeswax comes from the honeycomb of the honeybees and other bees. It is usually a bit more expensive than soy wax and is available in yellow or white varieties. Beeswax can be used with or without containers and is either aromatic (yellow version) or non-aromatic (white version.)

And the wick? The role of the wick is to absorb melted wax to keep the candle burning. In order to burn properly, the wicks have to be able to absorb the melted wax at a rate that lets the flame keep going. Too big of a wick and the candle melts fast, too small, and tunneling occurs. (Tunneling is what happens when only the center burns.) Wicks come in different types—wood, cotton, and zinc. Wooden wicks and wicks with zinc wires at their core generally stay upright on their own, which makes candle-making easier. Cotton wicks need wick holders to stay upright.

And oils? Either fragrance or essential oil can be used to make candles. Essential oils are pure plant extracts, which makes them more expensive to work with, while fragrance oils are synthetically made scents are less expensive. Fragrance oils are commonly found in many scented products and the amount of oil added to the wax defines how fragrant a candle can be.

Bulk fragrance oils are usually sold in powder form, which are then reconstituted by suppliers, using “solvents” to turn them into liquid. Oftentimes, phthalates are used during this process. The jury is still out regarding phthalates, however, it is getting a bad reputation as a potential cause of negative health effects, primarily affecting breathing.

Wax, wick, and oil—they’re basic ingredients. But when mixed together, they produce a wonderful home décor that lets us add a nice touch to our everyday living space, wind down after a long day, or celebrate milestones and accomplishments in life.

Carmen Brock is the perfect combination of Southern charm and Baltimore grit, much like her home décor shop, Trohv. For the past 12 years, Brock has curated items reflective of both Hampden’s quirky character and her own personal warmth. Nestled on The Avenue, the shop is a staple in the community where friends always drag their out-of-town guests.

And she’s known for gravitating towards local artists. “I grew up in a family business that was incredibly resourceful and relied heavily on the community,” says Brock. Her parents saved their money to buy the tobacco and cattle farm in Kentucky where Brock grew up, a dream of theirs that taught their children the value of hard work. “I learned how to rely on other clever, resourceful, creative folk in the community,” she says. “I admired that structure.”

Leaving the farm for Georgetown College in Kentucky and then Emory University in Atlanta, Brock encountered a new type of community—one of artists and other creative types. The more Brock traveled, the more artists she met, instilling in her an intense love of handmade products of all kinds and a desire to one day open a store. “I had such a deep respect for these people who were making things and loving it so much and sustaining themselves off that,” she says. As her admiration and knowledge of the arts expanded, Brock landed here in Baltimore, not expecting to call it home for very long. She took a teaching job with the city schools while waiting to move on to the next thing, but she soon realized Baltimore was the ideal location for her to open Trohv, originally called Red Tree.

“Once we were settled here, Baltimore had its way with me. It sunk its claws in deep,” she says with a laugh. After quitting her teaching job, Brock took the risk, unsure at first how to hire a staff, how to keep up inventory, and if the shop would even survive.

It’s an understatement to say that Hampden benefited from Brock’s leap. Trohv’s unusual collection of small gifts, unique home décor, charming books, and one-of-a-kind art welcomes people to The Avenue, something Brock actively strives to accomplish. The store often features staff-made seasonal decorations, creative window displays, and small workshops with local artists.

“Even just getting a customer to come downstairs to me is a success. I don’t take that for granted. When someone walks in our door, it’s a gift,” Brock says with sincere Southern hospitality in her eyes.

Perhaps it’s the engrained importance of hospitality that made Brock decide to build her shop around home décor. To Brock, choosing locally made home goods is about more than just involving the community—it’s about giving customers access to pieces that reflect both them and the Baltimore spirit. “When I walk into someone’s home, I want to be able to know something about that person based on what they choose to live with every day, and that’s what I’m trying to create here.”

Everything Brock is trying to achieve with the store is reflected in her elaborate holiday window displays: They’re engaging for artists and customers alike, educational for the staff, and just a fun part of the job. “It’s been the joy of my life to work with local artists, and I’ve learned so much from them,” Brock says. “I think I’ll be a student forever, and I’ll always be learning about my environment and how to make things mutually beneficial.”

Our kids are now 3 and 1, which means one of them has a slight idea about what’s happening on Christmas morning and the other will just be excited to watch her brother rip at wrapping paper and wonder why we’re all so busy so early. The holidays are only starting to be a big deal at our house (especially after years of not having kids or any sense of Christmas spirit), so I’m trying to get a head start on preparation.

I’m also committing to only buying gifts locally this year (and no, Amazon’s Dundalk fulfillment center doesn’t count), so each of the suggestions below are here in Baltimore. So go! Shop! Be festive! And do your best to spend your money right here in town.

Amuse Toys

My love affair with this store began immediately after our son was born and has only grown over the years. The toys are beautiful and require imagination, and the shopping experience is fun and well-informed. And, because kids love nothing more than playing with toys they’re 100-percent sure you didn’t spend money on, the Amuse Toys Quarry Lake location offers open play a few mornings a week. Grab a coffee, let them go nuts, and take a slight break from the holiday madness.

The Book Thing of Baltimore

My kids develop deep, emotional obsessions with books and just when they’ve broken my spirit and I’ve consigned myself to a life of reading nothing but Richard Scarry’s What Do People Do All Day, they lose total interest and find something else. Capitalize on this irrational behavior by clearing out your shelves while simultaneously choosing new-to-them, free books to give to your family.

Baltimore Chef Shop

Edie and Lou are still in the stage of life where food is optional at best and, when properly mashed, table art at worst. But if you’ve survived the early childhood years (good for you!) then perhaps an afternoon spent at the Baltimore Chef Shop would make a lovely gift for your kid who loves The Great British Baking Show. (And if your kid loves that show, again, good for you!) BCS is a beautiful kitchen in Hampden offering classes for 8-17 year olds and their parents on making donuts, dim sum, pasta, cookies, and other important food groups. There are also summer camps available if you’re the kind of long-term planning gift giver tweens love so much.

SIDESHOW at AVAM

Is there a more incredible gift shop in the world? Every inch of the shop is filled with fascinating, beautiful, useless, important, and affordable stuff. On a recent trip, I found cool rings and laser-cut wood earrings for $2; beautiful art coffee table books for under $20; a tiny drawer filled with plastic babies for 50 cents a pop; and a t-shirt offering an apology for the president in 14 languages. I highly suggest taking an hour (sans kids, if you can swing it) to wander through. You’ll check off most people on your list and walk out with the ultimate stocking stuffers.

Worthy Threads

Over the last few years, locally owned Worthy Threads has been popping up in Baltimore’s social media and retail worlds. Our friends gave us a sushi-printed pinafore dress (Sushi! On a dress! For an infant!) for Edie when she was born and it was so wonderful that I eventually cut the elastic in the waistband to eke out a few more weeks of wear. These clothes aren’t cheap, but they’re the kind that you treasure and begrudgingly-but-lovingly hand down to your favorite friend’s little one.

Shananigan’s Toy Shop

Similarly to the SIDESHOW gift shop, this is a store that will put your head on a swivel. It’s filled floor to ceiling with toys and games for all ages just as you start to get overwhelmed by decision fatigue, their knowledgeable staff swoops in and leads you right where you need to be.

There’s a temptation as the holidays approach to quickly open your Amazon app and start adding things to your cart until you’ve checked everyone off your list.

But that’s risky. After all, how many times have we received those gifts in the mail and been less than pleased because they were two sizes too small or made of the itchiest fabric? Not to mention the impersonal nature of buying that way. This year, we gathered a carefully curated selection of hand-picked gifts you can find locally, and we’ve broken them into handy categories (like foodie and fitness fanatic) for easy shopping. Because your loved ones deserve more than one click.

If you’re officially in panic mode trying to find the perfect presents before the holiday weekend approaches, we can relate but also we are here for you. There is still one, big holiday market left (more on that below) and plenty of local stores to go visit without having to obsessively track your package. So take a deep breath and let these creative, Baltimore products inspire your gift list.

Lavender spray from PriyaMeansLove
We guarantee that anyone on your list can use a stress cure. That’s why we love this organic lavender spray from PriyaMeansLove, which can be used to spray on skin, linens, or hair. Proved to have a calming effect, the spray contains a lavender tincture with a bit of earthy vetiver oil. Priya’s products are available at B. Willow.

The Food Market cookbook
We’ve all wondered how we can possibly recreate that beer-cheese that comes with the soft pretzels at The Food Market in Hampden. Well now we can find out. The restaurant’s chef/owner Chad Gauss came out with a cookbook filled with countless recipes for brunch, dinner, and drinks. Available at Trohv during the day and The Food Market at night.

Jerseys and gear from Sassy Cyclist.
We all have at least one member of the family or coworker at the office who is really into biking. So why not browse the products of Sassy Cyclist, which makes cycling jerseys, headbands, and gear with a feminine touch. Their line, and tons of other goods (like these chocolate crabs!), will be available at the Made in Baltimore holiday store open through Christmas Eve.

Earrings from Elyse by Nicole
If you’re tired of having the same jewelry as everyone else who shops at chain stores, check out the unique designs of Elyse by Nicole. From tassels to champagne glass, her materials make for sturdy yet pretty pieces. Her jewelry is available at a pop-up shop at Cross Keys until December 31.

Creative King tees and hats
Some dudes are notoriously hard to shop for and that’s why we love the neutral, cool styles of Creative King. The graphic art on all of their products is modern with just the right amount of edge and would fit right in with any wardrobe. Many items available at Double Dutch Boutique in Hampden.

Swag from Diamondback Beer
This Locust Point brewery has some of the best graphic designs around (thanks to creatives at Gilah Press) so why not show it off on hoodies, t-shirts, and pint glasses to take home? We are particular fans of Diamondback‘s tulip glass with signature turtle shell pattern. Available in their taproom, where you might just have to have a beer.

Candle-making kit from Knits, Soy, and Metal
We loved the idea of candle-making classes at Knits, Soy, and Metal‘s Mt. Vernon location, which they share with Keepers Vintage. With this kit, you can gift that experience to anybody and choose from four scents: lemongrass, pumpkin, patchouli, and blue spruce (the latter sounds particularly festive). Available at the shop or at their last holiday pop-up at Bird in Hand.

Yoga mat from Prosper Wellness
The gyms and studios will be crowded in January, so why not bring your a-game to yoga class with the journey mat from Prosper Wellness. We’ve tested these out and the cork material makes them lightweight and super slip resistant—even in the most stifling of hot yoga classes. Available at M.Power yoga studio in Brewer’s Hill.

Give the gift of pizza
This honestly requires no explanation because pizza is the ultimate comfort food. But we found the packaging on the &pizza gift cards particularly adorable, as they are housed inside mini versions of their rectangular pizza boxes. All your recipient has to do is pick the toppings. Available at the Federal Hill location.

Cards and wrapping paper from Rowhouse 14
Once you get the gifts, you have to worry about making them look pretty. Local stationary makers Rowhouse 14 feel your pain and offer cute Baltimore-themed cards and even taco(!) wrapping paper. Visit their stand at Last Stop Hops & Shop, the final holiday market of the season, at Peabody Heights on December 21.

Liz Vayda wears a lot of hats: She is the owner of plant retail paradise, B. Willow, and also the front woman of ethereal electronic band Vayda, which recently opened for indie duo Best Coast at the Ottobar. But Vayda is bringing more than just indoor plants and dreamy melodies to the Remington community. Nearly two years ago, she launched For the Greater Goods, a craft market designed to give small businesses and artists in the area a space to sell their goods that also donates a portion of all booth fees to charity.

“Being able to have an open setting where I could meet people, they could see my work, and we could talk about it was really impactful when developing my business,” Vayda says. “I just wanted to do that for other people.”

For the Greater Goods started out small, with the first market having only 18 vendors inside Bolton Hill artist collective Dust Town Studios. From there, it gradually grew through social media and word of mouth, moving to Hampden’s Church & Company events space before making R. House in Remington its new home base in May.

While For the Greater Goods was held more sporadically in the past, R. House is allowing the market to take over its garage space on a Saturday at the beginning of each month, with the first events being held November 4 and December 9, ideal for holiday shopping. The upcoming markets will feature more than 40 vendors—including Drunken Rum Cakes, 3angles, and Pearlswirl jewelry to name a few—with a wide array of handmade goods, food, and accessories.

“I want to revive the notion of the commons or the town square,” says Vayda. “I think it would be cool to see people coming in month after month to see what’s going on in the community.”

And while the exposure is great for the small businesses, the market’s name implies its larger goal. Each month, the market picks a charitable cause, donates a portion of vendors’ booth fees to that organization, and gives the group a free booth to help spread its mission.

“I definitely get a lot of gratification thinking about how, in some way, this is stimulating our local economy and giving Remington another attribute that is different from the new development,” Vayda says. “This creates a sense of pride for small businesses.”

We probably all have that friend or relative: they are obsessed with Top Chef, are constantly snapping an Instagram of every meal, and always bring the most delicious dish to the potluck. Well now you need the perfect present to satisfy their taste buds. We’ve compiled a list of locally inspired gifts for all the food-obsessed people in your life.

Your out-of-town relative: Restaurateurs Tom and John Knorr have been the brains behind several Eastern Shore spots like the Red Roost Restaurant in Whitehaven and Evolution Brewery in Salisbury. Now the Knorr brothers have started Crab Country Gourmet, which ships crab cakes, soups, and dips to anyone in the 48 contiguous states. Various packages are available ($20-120), and they ship quickly, are easy to reheat, and transport well. The soup is full of veggies and the right amount of heat and the cakes themselves are packed with lump meat. Other institutions—like G&M, Faidley’s, and Jimmy’s Famous Seafood—will also ship crab products around the country.

Local food blogger Amy Langrehr’s Charm City Cook Salted Caramel Brownies are not only available at one of our favorite guilty pleasure stores Ma Petite Shoe, but now also at The Wine Source just down the street. So whether it’s shoes, booze, or chocolate you are craving, there is a one-stop shop open to purchase these salty-sweet treats. There’s also local chocolatiers Wockenfuss, which ships its desserts around the country.

How about tickets to an All Grain Brewery Tour? Or maybe a quirky Heavy Seas T-shirt that celebrates our state’s beer scene? There’s also handmade coasters from Union Craft Brewing, a growler of your favorite brew from Max’s Taphouse, or just simply a sixer of the newly named Beazly (formerly Ozzy) from The Brewer’s Art. The possibilities are simply endless.

With options from reputable restaurants like My Thai, Blue Hill Tavern, and Homeslyce, OrderUp is a lounger’s dream. Now there are gift cards available (up to $100) to give to a certain someone in your life that just might not feel like peeling themselves off the couch one Sunday.

Partnering with Yelp and founded a few years ago, Giftly is an innovative way to purchase gift cards to restaurants from anywhere in the country. The list of Baltimore restaurants is actually pretty staggering—everything from the Gypsy Queen Food Truck to Woodberry Kitchen. So even if you live a few time zones away, you can still take your parents out to dinner.

Food writers Kathy and Neal Patterson compiled recipes from various spots including farm-to-table fare at Fleet Street Kitchen, seasonally inspired cuisine at Liv2Eat, old standbys like Pierpoint Restaurant, and hundreds of others. The Pattersons also wrote The Food Lover’s Guide to Baltimore, which focuses more on local culinary festivals and markets and is available at the BMA’s newly revamped gift shop.

Lately, Maryland has a ton of options, including the Easton-based Rise Up Coffee Roasters, whose 2014 holiday blend contains Kenya and Sumatra organic coffees. Of course, there’s also local favorite Zeke’s, which has a ton of signature blends based on local landmarks. And you can even purchase tickets to a coffee tasting at Zeke’s, Artifact, or Dooby’s.

So the best remedy for homesickness is Baltimore in a Box. You can send your faraway friend various packages that include Old Bay, Utz Crab Chips, Otterbein Cookies, Berger Cookies, Natty Boh, Mouth Party Caramels, and even (though not food-related) Big Boyz Bail Bond pens.
