The brewers at Flying Dog in Frederick and Jailbreak Brewing in Laurel have come together to collaborate on Watershed Moment Belgian IPA, which will debut in Ellicott City on Friday, September 9 and 100 percent of the profits will benefit flood relief.

“I was born and raised in Ellicott City, so there is a lot of nostalgia there for me,” said Flying Dog CMO Ben Savage. “Plus, Main Street is littered with small, independent businesses, which is really important for us to support.”

The actual beer is a combination between Jailbreak’s new Poor Righteous IPA and Flying Dog’s popular Raging Bitch Belgian-Style IPA, with the malt being from the former and the yeast from the latter. The two breweries, located on either side of Ellicott City, agreed that it was a no-brainer.

“It’s been an honor to be accepted into the Howard County community,” said Jailbreak’s co-founder and CEO Justin Bonner. “So when Ellicott City called upon its community for assistance, we felt compelled to help our neighbors in their time of need.

The beer will be released next week at Judge’s Bench and The Wine Bin, which both just reopened on Ellicott City’s Main Street. Savage said the beer will be available in craft-centric bars and liquor stores after that. Savage said they are encouraging retailers to also donate a portion of the profits to the Ellicott City Partnership.

“The craft-beer community is extremely tight knit,” Savage said. “The people that work here and are responsible for this brand all have a connection to that community. If our neighbors are in need, it’s normal for us to join together and help out.”

When tragedy
swept
Ellicott City last weekend in what was supposed to be a typical summer storm,
Maryland
rallied together quickly to support the town and its many businesses affected by
severe flooding. In Baltimore this weekend, head to Fells Point, where 20
percent of all sales at local pub Alexander’s Tavern will be donated to help
the Howard County community, and $5 wristbands get patrons $3 draft beers, $4
wines, and $2 off pizzas and tater tots. Raffles will feature gift cards to
Fells businesses like Thames Street Oyster House, Kooper’s Tavern, and Poppy

Baltimore’s Commissioner of Health early last year,
Dr. Leana Wen has skyrocketed into one of the city’s
most respected and admired public officials. Aptly labeled a “wunderkind” by
The Atlantic, the 33-year-old former ER
physician has led the war party on tackling opioid addiction and overdose in
Baltimore, has spent countless hours on the ground in local communities to
create programs against violence and for youth health and wellness, and has
worked doggedly to reimagine the role of public health in urban revitalization.
Outside of Baltimore, she has received national recognition, published more
than 100 articles, and given a TED talk that has subsequently been viewed
nearly 1.5 million times. This Sunday, as part of the Jewish Museum of
Maryland’s “In the Service of Health” series, she speaks about the importance
of addressing the social determinants of health for the vitality of community.

With the release of their new album, Natural Motion, out now via Friends Records, Other Colors has quickly become one of our favorite Baltimore bands. The radiant record unfolds like a film score, layered and complex, evocative of some distant time or place. Each song blossoms like a beautiful spell, enchanting you as the band dances across vivid landscapes, like the sweeping desert twangs of a dusty spaghetti western or the sultry bossa nova of Copacabana on some 1960s summer night. The local duo gently melds tender vocals into their vintage-tinged tunes, finding a happy place between genres—psychedelic pop, lo-fi indie, and easy listening—fittingly drawing inspiration from “forgotten AM radio hits and the smoother side of krautrock.” In the end, their sound is a lush, atmospheric dream, and you’ll find yourself not wanting to wake up. Hear them live this Friday, with fellow local acts including Moss of Aura (check out Baltimore’s October issue for a review of their upcoming album), Chiffon, and Shinji.

This Sunday, head to the State Fairgrounds to celebrate Maryland’s vibrant Latino community. At the fifth annual Latino Festival, thousands will flock for a fiesta of culture, with traditional art, festive food, cold drinks, kids activities, lots of live music and entertainment, as well as a medley of area nonprofits. Spend the afternoon sampling everything from piña coladas to traditional Salvadoran fare before heading to the main stage to hear popular artists like bachata dance musician Zacarias Ferreira, reggaeton duo Alexis and Fido, and Duranguense group K-Paz De La Sierra.

Nowadays, it seems like everyone’s a foodie—eating artisanal French fries, buying local ramps and radishes at farmers’ markets, frequenting festivals like The Emporiyum. It’s become a cliché, but with culinary creativity at an all-time high, we’re by no means going to knock it. Instead, this Saturday, you should embrace your inner foodie on the hills of Patterson Park. For one day, the green space will transform into an epicurean playground with the region’s top 40 food trucks offering everything from lobster rolls and barbecue to grilled cheese and cupcakes. Tour their treats, vote for your favorites, cool off with beer and wine, and listen to live music. Proceeds will benefit two good causes: Meals on Wheels, a nonprofit that delivers food to people in need, and the (RED) Campaign, whose global efforts are fighting to end AIDS.

Scramble down The Avenue and enjoy the evening, but if you get too hot outside, head into Atomic Books, where the indie bookstore’s back Eightbar will be hosting a tap-takeover happy hour, featuring Laurel’s Jailbreak Brewing. Cool down with Feed The Monkey orange hefeweizens, Welcome to Scoville jalapeño IPAs, and The Infinite amber ales, plus snacks from Golden West Café. If you’re lucky, you might even get a taste of their upcoming Q. Cumber saison, out next week just in time for the warm weather.

It’s all there: the gritty warehouses, the Hon-style beehives, the Formstone row homes, the rats. In the original (read: best) version, there’s even Baltimore’s legendary Divine. Whether you know it well or need it in your Netflix queue, the famous musical will return home this week, taking over the Meyerhoff stage as a special partial-concert production. Belt out “Good Morning Baltimore” beside members of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and see Mr. Waters himself, as he’ll be serving as the narrator.

spending First Friday in Hampden, head down to Hollins Market to shake your
groove thing with The B-52’s. Literally, as this weekend, the monthly Save Your Soul
dance party will be featuring guest DJ Fred Schneider, aka former frontman of
the beloved ’80s group. You might remember him from such famous lines as:
“If you see a faded sign at the side of the road, that says 15 miles to the…” Or,
“Sign says, [woo!] ‘Stay away, fools,’ – the love rules, at the luh-uh-uhve
shack…” Or, “Knock a little louder sugar!” Or, “I, can’t, hear, you!” You get
the point. He’ll be there, with DJs Rob Macy and King Gilbert, turning Lith

feels a little dated to say that Station North is having a resurgence these
days, as it’s been a long time coming with the bustling scene on Charles,
handful of art galleries, and addition of startups like the Station North Tool Library. But the surge continues,
thanks to the recent renovations of historic neighborhood buildings like Motor House and Centre Theater. Inside the latter, the
brand-new Baltimore Jewelry Center has set up shop and now cordially
invites you to its inaugural benefit party, Ornamenta. Adorn yourself in creative cocktail wear,
explore an exhibition of student work, partake in a silent auction, sample sips
from the open bar, and snack on biscuits from the beloved Blacksauce Kitchen.

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: If The Clash and Rancid had a love child, it would be Dope Body. At times hard-core heavy metal, at others ’90s garage grunge—but mostly pure punk rock—the band’s sound is always raw, rough-and-tumble, and mosh-pit ready, full of clashing hi-hats, thunderous drums, plugging bass, shredding guitar, and Andrew Laumann’s distinctive vocals. It calls out to the brooding teen inside us all, and this weekend, they perform at the Ottobar with other awesome locals acts like experimental electronic duo Wume, fuzzy alt-rockers Wing Dam (who we’re itching to hear some new music from), and Oxes’ drummer Chris Freeland’s solo project, Frenemies. It’s a solid lineup of serious homegrown talent for your Saturday night.

Vernon with hands-on activities (build your own headdresses), traditional Chinese performances (two showings from the Baltimore Chinese School), and colorful dance routines (the Yong Hang Lion Dance Troupe of Johns Hopkins, apparently for good luck).

Nov. 28: 16th Annual Oyster Festival

Oysters, oysters—everywhere—and this weekend, they’ll be shucked up and slurped down in Fells Point at the 16th annual oyster festival at Kooper’s Tavern and Sláinte Irish Pub. If you’re sick and tired of turkey and stuffing, make your way to Thames Street and try more than 20 different oysters including bay beauties like Choptank Sweets, Chincoteagues, and Mobjack Bays, as well as out-of-town favorites like Blue Points, Cape May Salts, Narragansett Bays, and PEI Raspberry Points. Have them raw, grilled, po’boyed, or in shooters alongside the perfect pairing of craft beers and cocktails. Afterwards, learn about those salty sweets with the Oyster Recovery Partnership, who will be in attendance to talk about local restoration efforts up and down the Chesapeake Bay.

In the month of Movember, celebrate facial hair everywhere at Jailbreak Brewing Company’s first annual Stache Bash on Thanksgiving Eve. Sip Ryemin’ & Stealin ales and Scolville Jalapeno IPAs (with happy hour all night long and all growlers 20-percent off), nosh on Bullhead Pit Beef with live music by local indie folk artist Matt Hutchison, and wave your whiskers in the air with gusto and gumption, as prizes will be awarded to the evening’s best bristles. In true weird and wonderful Baltimore fashion, the entire 700 block of West 34th Street will deck its digs in bright holiday lights, sporting everything from illuminated Bohs and glitzy Miss Utz to twinkling crabs, flamingos, and the famous hubcap tree. Through New Year’s Day, join the throngs of locals and tourists alike on the city sidewalks of this Charm City classic to get in the seasonal spirit.

Nov. 25: The Bridge

It was 14 years ago that a group of friends got together on the hallowed night of Thanksgiving Eve for a few beers and jams at a local bar. Perhaps it was timing, perhaps it was something called fate, but from out of that November night, a band was born—The Bridge—and ever since, the roots-rock sextet has been a beloved hometown favorite. They gained a loyal following of fans, toured the local venues, got big-league gigs like Bonnaroo and All Good, but eventually, like some of the greatest love stories, they broke up, unable to sustain the expensive lifestyle that comes with the music industry. In the years that followed, frontman Cris Jacobs struck off on his own solo adventures around the city, the band got back together for the occasional benefit concert, but wherever they went, and wherever they go from here, it always comes back to that very first gig. This week, catch them at their annual Turkey Wednesday night celebration with two full sets and opening act Scrambled Greg of Pigeons Playing Ping Pong. Proceeds from raffle tickets will benefit Gather Baltimore, which collects surplus produce and redistributes it to the city’s underserved citizens.

Don’t miss dainty, delicate paper cuts by Annie Howe, wall-worthy screen-prints from Baltimore Print Studio, Baltimore map T-shirts from Red Prairie Press, fleecy creature toys by Cotton Monster, Maryland crab tea towels from FuzzyMug, bright urban oil paintings by Charlene Clark, and metallic mosaics from AVAM’s own Rick Shelley. In fact, this is the scene at Jailbreak Brewing in Howard County, which hosts a monthly Sunday program called Yoga on Tap. Partnering with nearby studio Yoga Love, the brewery houses more than 80 students in its taproom for an hour-long session of Power Flow, an upbeat program complete with a DJ. When class is done, students fold up their mats and throw back a few pints.

“These days, people want to get in their workout and social time all at once,” says Liz Sheer, who runs Jailbreak’s marketing, social media, and events. “People are so busy and this is a way to fit in yoga, beer, and shuffleboard all under one roof.”

Jailbreak, whose next event is this Sunday, is not alone in capitalizing on this concept. This Saturday, Union Craft Brewing is hosting Grateful Phlow, featuring yoga instruction by Nila Mechali and Jason Herd to jam-band tunes, a free Union beer, live music, and arts and craft vendors.

“We want to introduce the yoga world to this amazing home brewery,” says Mechali, who teaches at M.Power Yoga and is expecting about 150 people during the 75-minute Vinyasa flow in Union’s parking lot on Saturday. “And also tell the greater public that yoga is not just about putting yourself in these pretzel-like poses.” M.Power itself also hosts Natty Bohga, a creatively named series that takes place on the rooftop of the Natty Boh building.

And, just last week, Heavy Seas Beer launched a monthly series called Bend & Brews, where students take a Vinyasa class in the brewhouse among the shiny tanks, led by Charm City Yoga‘s Kelley Stump. A $25 ticket gets you the hour-long class, a beer tasting, $1 off pints, and $1 off brunch provided by a local food truck. The next two classes are August 9 and September 13.

“Craft beer is exploding with the younger population,” says Heavy Seas events coordinator Clare Bublitz. “But people still want to feel healthy. The idea is you do yoga so you can have that craft beer afterwards.”

In fact, the health aspect is a big reason why craft beer and yoga may have such similar fanbases. The idea of organic ingredients and supporting local community speaks to beer enthusiasts and yogis alike.

“People that do yoga are very in tune with what they put into their bodies,” Sheer says. “And we at Jailbreak make a huge effort to be eco-friendly. We give all our grain back to a Frederick farm and get all of our fruits and vegetables within walking distance. Everything is organic and locally sourced.”

Sheer says she’s even done beer tastings at Lululemon stores and envisions starting to offer more frequent Yoga on Tap classes at the brewery. “I just see this continuing to grow,” she says. “It’s mind-blowing how much our taproom fills up every Sunday.”
