Each year, we celebrate the dentists who give us bright, healthy smiles. Browse this year's list to find professionals to meet your needs in every specialty of dentistry. We also chat with five of our top pros about why they love the work they do.

“If you had a patient in need of a dentist, which dentist would you refer them to?”

his is the question we’ve asked thousands of dentists to help us determine who the topDentists™ should be. Dentists and specialists are asked to take into consideration years of experience, continuing education, manner with patients, use of new techniques and technologies, and of course physical results.

The nomination pool of dentists consists of dentists listed online with the American Dental Association, as well as all dentists listed online with their local dental societies, thus allowing virtually every dentist the opportunity to participate. Dentists are also given the opportunity to nominate other dentists who they feel should be included in our list. Respondents are asked to put aside any personal bias or political motivations and to use only their knowledge of their peers' work when evaluating the other nominees.

Voters are asked to individually evaluate the practitioners on their ballot whose work they are familiar with. Once the balloting is completed, the scores are compiled and then averaged. The numerical average required for inclusion varies depending on the average for all the nominees within the specialty and the geographic area. Borderline cases are given a careful consideration by the editors. Voting characteristics and comments are taken into consideration while making decisions. Past awards a dentist has received and status in various dental academies can factor into our decisions.

Once the decisions have been finalized, the included dentists are checked against state dental boards for disciplinary actions to make sure they have an active license and are in good standing with the board. Then letters of congratulations are sent to all the listed dentists.

Of course, there are many fine dentists who are not included in this representative list. It is intended as a sampling of the great body of talent in the field of dentistry in the United States. A dentist’s inclusion on our list is based on the subjective judgments of his or her fellow dentists. While it is true that the lists may at times disproportionately reward visibility or popularity, we remain confident that our polling methodology largely corrects for any biases and that these lists continue to represent the most reliable, accurate, and useful list of dentists available anywhere.

This list is excerpted from the 2025 topDentists™ list, a database which includes listings for more than 250 dentists and specialists in the Baltimore area. That's right, it's a brave new world for dentistry, with advanced technology, including artificial intelligence, making a positive impact on the patient experience, as writer Michele Wojciechowski explains in this year’s feature, “The Impression You Get.” And if you are looking for a practitioner who is at the top of this dynamic field, the following package is full of 254 dentists who have made our annual list by being the best in their respective specialties. So go ahead, open up and say “ahhhh” knowing you are in good hands.

“If you had a patient in need of a dentist, which dentist would you refer them to?”

HIS IS THE QUESTION we’ve asked thousands of dentists to help us determine who the Top Dentists should be. Dentists and specialists are asked to take into consideration years of experience, continuing education, manner with patients, use of new techniques and technologies, and, of course, physical results.

Voters are asked to individually evaluate the practitioners on their ballot whose work they are familiar with. Once the balloting is completed, the scores are compiled and then averaged. The numerical average required for inclusion varies, depending on the average for all the nominees within the specialty and the geographic area. Borderline cases are given a careful consideration by the editors. Voting characteristics and comments are taken into consideration while making decisions. Past awards a dentist has received and status in various dental academies can factor into our decisions.

Of course, there are many fine dentists who are not included in this representative list. It is intended as a sampling of the great body of talent in the field of dentistry in the United States. A dentist’s inclusion on our list is based on the subjective judgments of their fellow dentists. While it is true that the lists may at times disproportionately reward visibility or popularity, we remain confident that our polling methodology largely corrects for any biases and that these lists continue to represent the most reliable, accurate, and useful list of dentists available anywhere.

Top Dentists 2022

Here’s a question for you: For how long do you brush your teeth? The Academy of General Dentistry reports that the average person brushes for 45 to 70 seconds a day, though the recommendation is to brush for two minutes.

This is just one of many ways we tend to ignore our oral health. We keep our toothbrushes too long even though they are magnets for bacteria, and we’re pretty poor at flossing.

It’s no wonder the American Dental Hygienists’ Association says 78 percent of Americans have had at least one cavity by age 17, while 80 percent of the U.S. population has some form of periodontal gum disease.

Clearly, it is time to visit the dentist.

Luckily, we have compiled our annual list of some of the best dental practitioners in the Baltimore region, based on peer-to-peer nominations. If you need a little more incentive to return to the dentist’s chair, consider that your dentist can screen for everything from heart disease to cancer. Check out our feature story where we reveal the many ways a trip to the dentist might just save your life—or at the very least, give your smile a Zoom-worthy sparkle.

METHODOLOGY

Over the course of two months, we conducted an online poll asking members of the dental profession in Baltimore and the five surrounding counties where they would send a member of their own family for care.

We accepted submissions in eight specialties, and, as ever, received a great response. Only those with an overwhelming number of peer recommendations made our list, which was also reviewed by our dental advisor.

OUR ADVISER: DR. MORGAN BARKER HURWITZ

After earning a Bachelor of Science degree in biology in 2011 from the University of Maryland, College Park Honors Program, Hurwitz received her Doctorate of Dental Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry in 2015, graduating magna cum laude. From 2015 to 2016 she completed an Oral Surgery Internship at the University of California, Los Angeles, where she received hospital-based training at Ronald Reagan Medical Center and focused on impacted wisdom teeth and sedation.

Following her internship, she continued her specialty training, earning a certificate in periodontics and a Master of Science degree in Biomedical Sciences, both from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry in 2019. The following year, Hurwitz graduated from the Implant and Periodontal Prosthesis Fellowship at the University of Maryland, where she focused on dental implant prosthetics. Hurwitz became a Diplomate in periodontics in 2021, where she was board- certified by the American Board of Periodontology.

Hurwitz is a member of the American Academy of Periodontology and the American Dental Association. Dr. Hurwitz grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, where she currently resides with her husband, while practicing at Feldman, Slevin, Hurwitz & Choe, D.D.S., P.A. in Towson, Maryland.

Why It’s Time to Go Back to the Dentist

Early last May, roughly two months after the start of Maryland’s stay- at-home order, Governor Larry Hogan announced that elective dental procedures could begin to resume. Days later, the orthodontic offices of Issacs, Nawy, Stern and Isaacs would reopen. But patients returning for routine checkups would find that a few things had changed since their last visits.

“A lot of orthodontic practices are set up as an open-bay-type area,” says Dr. Jessie Isaacs, who treats patients at the Baltimore County-based practice’s Bel Air, Timonium, and Perry Hall locations. “Most of our offices are laid out like that, but with COVID, this posed a really big set of challenges for us. We had to figure out a way to maintain social distancing, and to keep patients safe.”

Luckily, her father, Dr. Robert Isaacs—affectionately referred to as the “office carpenter”—spent several years working in construction before switching career paths to become an orthodontist. Together, a month before the practice reopened, he and Isaacs installed a series of hanging partitions in each of its office’s clinics. Constructed using plexiglass roofing panels, the partitions span from floor to ceiling to divide patient chairs, which Isaacs says each have “their own kind of cubicle-type feel.”

The patient chairs receive multiple cleanings throughout each day in accordance with CDC guidelines, and laundry machines were installed in the offices to wash and dry reusable lab coats. These are worn by the dentists—all twice vaccinated—in addition to extra layers of personal protective equipment (PPE).

“We’re still doing double masks. We do an N95 mask with a surgical mask overtop of that,” says Isaacs. “Depending on what we’re doing, a lot of times, we’ll either wear face shields, or just big eyewear. And we do a surgeon cap, so our hair is pulled back. It’s definitely a lot of stuff.”

Across Maryland, more than a year since COVID-19 flipped life on its axis indefinitely, dental practitioners are more vigilant than ever when it comes to preventing transmission of the virus.

In office reception areas, plexiglass barriers separate front desk staff and patients, who are required to undergo screening for COVID-19 symptoms outside before entering. There are no longer magazines to occupy masked patients waiting in socially distanced seating areas, but plenty of ultra-violet air purifiers (which cost around $400 a pop) and even, in some cases, fogging machines, with chemicals that trap and inactivate viruses.

“Putting these things into place probably cost $10-20,000 for a lot of offices,” says Dr. Eric Morse, regional director of The American Academy of General Dentistry.

The Perryville-based dentist estimates that items such as N95 masks, gloves, and gowns “cost anywhere from three to six times more than what they did prior to the pandemic. It adds up very quickly.”

However costly and wasteful—most, if not all, PPE is tossed after patient contact—research shows that investments in virus prevention have more than paid off for dentists. A study published by the American Dental Association (ADA) found that fewer than one percent of dentists nationwide tested positive for COVID-19 last year. Based on data compiled in June 2020, in which nearly 22,000 dentists were surveyed, the study also found that 99 percent of offices were taking increased disinfection measures.

So, is it finally safe to start scheduling fillings and routine teeth cleanings again?

“I would say it’s very safe,” says Dr. George Shepley, Fourth District Trustee for the ADA. “The good news is this: Between the ADA and CDC research, there haven’t been any real known transmissions of corona between patients and staff in a dental office,” Shepley adds. “We’re all getting busier and people feel way more comfortable coming in.”

He says that attendance saw a momentary dip during last year’s winter COVID spike. However, last summer, Shepley notes that most dentists had begun to treat 85 percent of their patients. According to the North American Dental Group, a case study published around this time found that 65 percent of respondents had plans to visit their dentist before the end of 2021.

“I think because of the nature of dentistry, where you tend to see patients every six months, you kind of develop a rapport with them,” Morse says. “Once they’re comfortable with your office, they know that you do take their safety and their health into consideration.”

Nonetheless, despite the emergence of vaccines, which have mostly proven to be effective, many still err on the side of caution when it comes to re-entering public spaces.

“For some patients, we’re the first place that they’ve really gone to outside of their houses,” says Dr. Morgan Barker Hurwitz, a periodontist at Feldman, Slevin, Hurwitz & Choe in Towson (and Baltimore’s advisor on its 2021 Top Dentist survey). “A lot of these people haven’t gone to the store. And we’re asking them not only to leave their houses and go somewhere, but to open their mouths and noses and uncover themselves so that they’re vulnerable.”

But to reassure patients, Hurwitz tells them that dentists have always been cautious—and now more so with COVID. “We always treat everyone as if they could be a potential source of transmission of something. We’re going through every precaution that we’ve always taken, but now we’ve ramped it up even more.”

According to Shepley, these measures show no signs of loosening up in the near future. “COVID is not going to go away. Even if we get some herd immunity at this point, I think the feeling is that there will be other variants that come out,” the dentist says.

For now, this means that at Isaacs’ practice, the pandemic partitions will be staying put. So will the double layers of PPE, which make things hot—and fog up her glasses.

“But at this point, I’m so used to it,” she says. “I feel like I’d be naked if I didn’t have it all on, you know? It was weird for a while, but now it’s just kind of a way of life.”

Tooth Pain? You Can Blame COVID for That, Too.

Survey finds stress-related dental conditions continue to increase.

For most of us, an ongoing side effect of the coronavirus pandemic has been added stress—from genuine health concerns to the near impossibility of maintaining a work-life balance to the anxiety that comes with frontline jobs. That additional stress can show up in our bodies in many ways—especially in our mouths.

In a March study by the American Dental Association (ADA), more than 70 percent of dentists reported seeing an increase of patients experiencing teeth grinding and clenching, conditions often associated with stress. That’s an increase of 10 percent from a survey conducted last September.

“The increase over time suggests stress-related conditions have become substantially more prevalent since the onset of COVID-19,” says Marko Vujicic, Ph.D., chief economist and vice president of the ADA Health Policy Institute.

Board-certified periodontist Dr. Kyong Choe has witnessed the increase in symptoms with patients at his combined-specialty practice in Towson.

“Some patients are coming in saying the whole side of my face hurts,” Choe says.

The sudden onset of headaches or generalized pain in certain areas of the mouth can be symptoms of clenching, he explains. It’s one of several effects of parafunction—i.e., any habits outside of the normal chewing and swallowing, including stress-induced jaw clenching, tooth grinding, or nail biting.

“Looking at the group of patients who historically wouldn’t have a night guard or didn’t need one, we started to prescribe more of them than usual,” Choe says.

While appliances like mouth guards can help address the habit at night, they don’t modify behaviors during the day. “A lot of it is behavior management,” Choe says. “If you’re clenching and grinding at work, or at home dealing with the kids and trying not to fight with your spouse, you have to realize your teeth shouldn’t be touching, period. There are muscle exercises we tell people to do when they have the symptoms. It’s like physical therapy.”

While the pandemic has compounded the existing dental anxiety for some patients, Choe urges those with any pain or concerns not to wait to contact their dentist. Many practices, including Choe’s, now offer teledentistry appointments to triage the issue over the phone to determine if and when an in-person appointment is necessary.

“Don’t let it sit,” Choe adds. “Dentistry is not one of those things where an issue will resolve itself. It will stay the same or get worse.”

In The Shadow of Coronavirus, Aspiring Dentists Answer the “Why” Question

When Ashley Reid was young, she had what she describes as “a large gap” between her teeth, and “a profound overbite.” “I was teased because of it,” she says. In her junior year of high school, she says, “My mom finally decided it was time for me to get braces.”

Desperate to have the metal work removed before senior pictures were taken, Reid endured weekly tightening by the orthodontist to expedite their removal, but unfortunately missed the photo-op deadline. Now, as a first-year student at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry, she has that senior photo, gleaming braces and all, as the screen saver on her phone.

After the procedure, says Reid, “My confidence went through the roof.” Realizing that she could help others feel the same way contributed to her decision to study dentistry.
Nationwide, 25,381 students were enrolled in pre-doctoral dental programs in the 2018-19 academic year, the highest number ever, according to the American Dental Education Association (ADEA).

Students choose dentistry for myriad reasons, including more predictable schedules than other medical fields, building ongoing relationships with their patients, and generous salaries, which can range from $150,000 to upwards of $300,000 for those in specialty practices.

But that’s just one part of the appeal, according to local aspiring dentists who spoke with Baltimore. And the COVID-19 epidemic, at its height when they were interviewed, didn’t seem to deter these students from their chosen field—which requires plenty of physical contact with patients.

On a study-abroad year in Nigeria during high school, Abiodun Oni saw disparities in the health system, but observed that while people were anxious to see medical doctors, they would neglect other aspects of their health. When she returned home to Florida, she called area dental offices to fInd a practitioner to shadow. Seeing firsthand the dentist’s engagement with his patients—and the patients’ responses—drew Oni to the field, she says. “One woman came in so upset; she didn’t want to be there,” Oni recalls. “But after the procedure, a root canal, she was ecstatic.”

Oni, who recently graduated from The Johns Hopkins University with a degree in chemistry, plans to attend Philadelphia’s Temple University Dental School in the fall. At Hopkins, Oni was president of the Pre-Dental Society, a student organization founded in 2015. The club, which had 29 members last year, hosts panels with professionals and current dental students, organizes outreach work for undergraduates to assist dentists working in challenged settings, and helps students and mentors. Despite its strong emphasis on general medicine, Oni says, “Hopkins doesn’t have as many resources for dental students.”

Her experience in Nigeria convinced Oni that dental care is important to overall health, and she intends to make that message a focus of her future practice. “I want people to understand that some diseases can start in the mouth.”

Alicia Briscoe stresses that idea. “If your mouth isn’t up to par, your body won’t be,” says the second-year dental student at UMD. Your dentist, she points out, can sometimes be on the front line of many a diagnosis. “A dentist can put things on the physician’s radar, things like diabetes and HIV can show up in the gum tissue.” Furthermore, confidence in one’s smile can improve mental and emotional health.

Growing up, Briscoe observed her mother’s random encounters with her patients in places like the supermarket: “People would come up and tell their whole story and cry and hug her. I was like, ‘This is amazing.’”

Abiodun Oni also looks forward to having relationships like that with her patients. And, as an African-American, she says, “I want to get closer to patients who may not be trusting of doctors.”

Reid believes that because dentistry requires strong patient rapport, dental schools look for personable applicants with well-rounded credentials. The notion that you need a 4.0 GPA to get into dental school, she says, is a myth. “You need to be able to network and have a dialogue in the community,” she says. “To get a 4.0, you have to be in the books all the time.”

But then what about the health crisis? When asked if the current pandemic has given them any pause about their chosen profession, the students are circumspect.

“You know what you’re signing up for when you get in the medical field,” says Reid. “You’re working with bodily fluids. You have to take the necessary precautionary measures to make sure you keep yourself and your patients safe.”

Oni is more contemplative. On a Facebook page she follows, she’s seen dentists respond in two ways: “Some are worried about the lack of people coming in, others are like, ‘We need to mobilize in the interest of public health, donating masks and volunteering,’” she says. “It’s making me think about how I want to practice. If this were to happen, would I be worried about losing business, or would I be mobilizing?”

She concludes that in all practicality, she’d respond with a bit of both.

Even so, Oni describes the coronavirus crisis as “a huge wakeup call,” a reminder to heed scientific data. “They’ve been telling us about this for months. Now we’re in a predicament. We should listen to professionals.”

The virus has also reminded those we interviewed that dentists, above all else, are servants of the public. To that end, and despite the potential financial outlay—the average student debt for dental school graduates in 2017 was more than $280K, according to the ADEA—most of the students we spoke to see outreach to less privileged populations as an important part of their future.

Take, for example, Eugene Bestman. He hopes to someday return to his native Ghana to open a dental practice—or even a chain of offices there. At 10 years of age, Bestman slipped and chipped a tooth, which a Ghanian dentist, who lacked both equipment and expertise, then extracted.
Even after coming to the U.S. a decade ago, Bestman continued to have trouble with the tooth, first wearing an ill-fitting denture, called a flipper, then graduating to a bridge that didn’t quite adhere to the eroded bone.

He received a degree in neuroscience and biology from the University of Delaware knowing he wanted to pursue a career in health, but it was while researching his own dental issues that he came across the eld of oral maxillofacial surgery, the specialty that deals with diseases and injuries in the hard and so tissue of the head, neck, face, and jaw. “I turned a sad situation into a career,” he says.

As a third-year student at UMD School of Dentistry, Bestman is weighing the options. While the surgical specialty is appealing, he’s also drawn to general dentistry.

In the meantime, he’s finally getting his front tooth fixed. “So much time had passed, I didn’t have enough bone to place the implant,” he says. Dentists at UMD did a bone graft and he’ll soon get an implant. “I get a discount because I’m a student,” he explains. “I’m getting the best care I possibly could.”

Bestman is looking forward to his new tooth. “I can’t exactly walk around without a front tooth,” he says. “My patients would come in and ask, ‘Why is this dentist missing a tooth?’”

here would you begin to find Baltimore’s best dentists? You probably wouldn’t start by asking a bunch of journalists. Which is why, every year, we take the question to their peers—other dentists. It’s a tight-knit community out there in Dental Land, and dentists seem to know which local practitioners have the most stellar reputations for skill and experience. So here are our picks for the dentists with the most peer referrals, divided into different areas of the region and eight dental specialties. Of course, no one is promising you that a root canal or implant will be anyone’s idea of fun, but these guys and gals will make the trip to the dentist a little more reassuring. And while we were at it, just for fun, we hunted down a professional with inside knowledge of what goes on in these practices (and in your mouth, for that matter): a veteran dental hygienist.

Hanging With The Hygeinist

Think of them as the advance guard of dentistry.

Leslie Marie Wallace has been in the field for 37 years.

If you hate going to the dentist, you could argue that all of your problems start with the hygienist,

After all, he or she is the one that—after tidying things up in your food-intake area has to go and blab to the dentist about the receding gums under your right lateral incisor, the early decay on your left lower canine, and the failing crown way in the back near your second molar.

All while the co-pay calculator in your head is clicking away, adding up your out-of-pocket expenses. Or is worrying about the pain to fix all that stuff worse?

So we decided to get in a hygienist’s head a little bit, to learn their little secrets and see what makes them tick. And we picked an expert who has seen her share of imperfect mouths, 37-year veteran Leslie Marie Wallace, 56, of Feldman, Fitzgerald, and Choe in Towson:

What’s your background?
I live just over the line near I-83 in Stewartstown, Pennsylvania, am married with a son, and I trained in dental assisting at Medix School in Towson (now Fortis Institute) and received my applied sciences associate degree in dental hygiene at Baltimore City Community College.

>So why, for goodness sake, did you choose dental hygiene, when you could have chosen concert pianist, brain surgeon, or astronaut?
When I was a child, I suffered from a noticeable overbite and was often called “bucky” by the other children, but my parents couldn’t afford braces for me. When I graduated from high school, I promised myself that I’d pursue a career in the dental field and correct my overbite.

How often can you anticipate what the dentist will find during his inspection and the recommended treatment plan?
Because of the rules of professional conduct, dental hygienists can’t diagnose dental problems. But I generally have a good idea of what the dentist will find. So I often discuss with the patient anything that looks suspicious or out of the ordinary.

What’s the most irritating thing patients do?
Talk, talk, and talk some more. But, of course, that’s only natural, considering how nervous and apprehensive most patients are when going to the dentist.

And what about you? Do hygienists actually expect a coherent response when they’re carrying on a monologue about their grandchildren during a cleaning?
I’m much too young to have grandchildren!

What’s the patient fib you hear the most?
I swear, Leslie, I floss every day.

Have you ever had to bite your tongue concerning a dentist’s work or recommendations?
I work with some highly experienced and conservative dentists. No, I’ve never seen them recommend anything a patient didn’t require.

What changes would you most like to see in dentistry?
To allow dental hygienists to practice independently.

What’s the weirdest mouth you’ve ever seen?
On the large-mouth bass I caught last summer.

So after 37 years, have you had enough yet?
I have not yet begun to floss.

And, drumroll, what’s the most worn-out dental joke or pun you hear?
If I ever hear another dentist joke, I’ll be down in the mouth.

Looking for Baltimore’s most highly regarded dentists? We did the research for you.

Shopping for the region’s most talented maestros of the mouth? Here are the results of our annual Top Dentists survey, offering a handy resource to readers. To arrive at our list, we surveyed more than 2,000 dentists in Baltimore and five surrounding counties over the course of several months to find out where they would send a member of their own family. Since most dentistry is local, we then divided the winners by location (winning dentists with more than one office may be listed in more than one geographic zone). While doing the research, we also learned that a great many local practitioners use their skills in various charitable ways. In “Mission to the Mouth,” we take a look at one cause in particular, in which hundreds of DDS staff and volunteers bring free dental care to thousands of low-income Marylanders every year.

Assisting us in the survey this year was Dr. Eric Resh, a general dentist who practices with his brothers at Resh Family Dentistry in Hampstead, a practice that dates to 1893. Resh’s specialties include cosmetic and restorative dentistry, oral surgery, root canal therapy, sleep dentistry, and orthodontics. He completed his doctorate of dental surgery at the University of Maryland in 2002 and is an active member of the American Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, Maryland State Dental Association, and Carroll County Dental Association.

Mission to the Mouth

Local dentists pull out all the stops at massive clinics to treat the poor.

athy Reel knew she had neglected her teeth, and that it could cause bigger health problems down the line. But dental insurance was unaffordable and paying out of pocket wasn’t in the cards—the typical annual cost just for cleanings, checkups, and X-rays is about $200. “I knew I had cavities, and I hadn’t had a cleaning in a long time, because I didn’t have insurance,” says Reel, 60, a coordinator for a community action nonprofit who lives in Garrett County. “I know an infection caused by dental issues can infect other parts of the body, and I had been having a lot of sinus infections.”

She found a solution to her problems, however, in an unlikely place: the sprawling fairgrounds in neighboring Allegany County, one of the Maryland locations where, each year, hundreds of volunteer dentists and staff from practices all over the state convene, their dental chairs and equipment arranged in long rows. Their mission: to provide mass treatment for hundreds of patients like Kathy—no cost, no questions asked.

Mission of Mercy (MOM) holds such dental-triage marathons in high-school gyms, civic centers, and armories every year—the most recent one was at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center in Salisbury in March. Stats gathered from another recent MOM event give a good picture of just what’s involved: 116 dentists, 61 University of Maryland School of Dentistry students, and dozens of dental assistants volunteered their time, providing an estimated $1.2 million in free care, from fillings and root canals to X-rays and surgical procedures. (Free vision screenings and eyeglass donations were going on in another part of the space as well.) It was funded by more than $100,000 in monetary and in-kind donations from companies, foundations, dental practices, individuals, churches, and dental societies, including the Maryland State Dental Association Charitable and Educational Foundation (MSDAF). And it drew lower-income patients not only from Maryland (560 patients), but also from Delaware (381) and a smattering of other states.

And the Top Vote-Getters Are . . .

Our survey drew hundreds of peer recommendations for dentists in the eight specialties, and we only listed those with a convincing level of approval from area dentists. But some practitioners stood out with overwhelming peer support. Here are the top voter-getters in their specialties:

A closer look at the attendees of that event makes the need clear: More than half made less than $15,000 annually, and 72 percent either didn’t have enough insurance to cover the procedures or had no insurance at all.

Started in 2010, the mass-treatment clinics draw hundreds of patients who register in advance, then wait patiently to be called on a first-come, first-served basis.

But the need is still great, despite the volunteer dentists’ efforts.

Reel is one of thousands of believers. For one thing, her sinus infections have all but disappeared. “I’m not a doctor, but I think it had a lot to do with it,” she says. “After going three times, I hardly ever have any infections now.”

“It was great—it even gets better each year. Everyone there, from the people who sign you in to the dentists, are all very polite,” she says. “I also got a prescreening so I could go through the clinic faster. And because of the prescreening, they contacted local dentists in my area so they could give follow-up care.”

But the need is still great, despite the volunteer dentists’ efforts. “At the first MOM in Salisbury in 2013, for example, some people waited outside in the cold all night for a chance to get help,” says Northwest Baltimore’s Dr. Leon D. Katz, an MSDA board member and perennial winner in Baltimore’s Top Dentists peer survey who’s volunteered his expertise at every single MOM event. “At that event, about 1,150 patients received $1.1 million of dental treatment, but 2,000 people were turned away.”

“One of the reasons we started doing this was we saw that, while Maryland has a very strong dental Medicaid program for children, there’s none for adults,” says Dr. Diane Romaine, MSDAF president. “So there are a lot of underserved adults who tend to go to emergency rooms to seek dental treatments. But ERs can’t deliver those procedures—they can just give you pain pills.”

Romaine points out that Maryland is one of only four states in the country that don’t have an adult dental Medicaid program. And that dubious dental distinction was the impetus behind legislation passed in Annapolis in April that authorizes a study to look at the cost to Medicaid of emergency-room visits by adults with chronic dental conditions. It also authorizes the governor—though it doesn’t require him—to fund a Medicaid adult-dental benefit in a future budget.

If you think that getting careless about dental hygiene will just lead to stains and the occasional cavity, you might want to think again. To get the definitive list of all the scary afflictions dental problems can cause, we went to Dr. Karl J. Zeren, a Baltimore dentist specializing in periodontics, dental implants, and reconstructive surgery, who also teaches at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry and The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Also pitching in was Towson dentist Dr. Jay Shires, a perennial winner in Baltimore’s Top Dentists peer survey and a dean’s faculty volunteer at the University of Maryland dental school.

Decay It’s still the most common disease in kids and adults, and there’s been an upsurge due to sugary food, energy drinks, and acidic foods such as carbonated beverages, which contain a lot of both acid and sugar. For children, decay can lead to loss of arch width, which predisposes them to crowding of their adult teeth. In adults, decay can lead to infection and tooth loss, causing changes in masticatory harmony—how the teeth work together with the muscles and temporomandibular joints to chew. This can cause headaches or neck pain.

Chronic Inflammation If due to periodontal disease, this showers the bloodstream with toxins and can stress the immune system. Mental health: Inflammation in the mouth causes plaque to build up in the arteries, affecting nerve cells in Alzheimer’s patients.

Breathing Problems Periodontal problems can cause chronic respiratory disease and aspiration pneumonia from swallowing saliva with bacteria.

Gum Infections Because well-entrenched infections can cause bacteria and toxins to enter the bloodstream, they’re associated with thrombosis (blood clots that can trigger strokes).

Cancer Inflammation can foster the proliferation of abnormal cells, which has been correlated with cancer risk.

Loss of teeth It can affect one’s speaking ability—you lose phonics, especially words with “v” or “th.” It’s the teeth that make speech crisp. Once you lose a tooth, the bite also starts to change, which can contribute to clenching and grinding, and the inability to chew certain foods—which can cause nutritional deficiencies.

Abscesses If decay gets bad enough, it can cause the nerves of the tooth to die. The only way the body can deal with that is swelling or tooth abscess. The resulting infection can start invading different planes of the head and neck around the airway—those areas delineated by the muscles and facia. That can compromise the airway, especially if you’re immunocompromised or have diabetes.

Childbirth complications Gum infections in cases of high-risk pregnancy can cause preterm and low-weight babies.

In the meantime, the MOM events are trying to fill that gap—and to get the governor and lawmakers to notice. “It’s really dramatic when, at 4 in morning, you see there’s already a line of people seeking dental care, willing to wait all night,” says Romaine. “When legislators see that, they start to understand the need.”

We’ll spare you the often gruesome “before” photos of some of these patients, but suffice it to say, the restorative work done in just a couple of hours by the dentists is nothing short of remarkable.

Katz says he particularly enjoys restoring badly decayed and seemingly hopeless upper front teeth. “I’ve treated patients who cannot smile or are too embarrassed to smile. Many don’t feel they can have a job interview because of their decayed or broken teeth.”

He welcomes the seeming impossible cases: “I’ve worked closely with Dr. Marc Nuger, who runs the triage at most of the MOMs—he saves the most challenging patients for me.

“The whole experience is rewarding for all of the volunteers.”

It’s that time again, when we unveil the results of our annual Top Dentists survey, offering a handy resource to readers who want to find a talented dentist they actually like. To arrive at our results, we surveyed more than 2,000 dentists in Baltimore and the five surrounding counties over the course of several months to find out where they would send a member of their own family. Since most dentistry is local, we then divided the winners by location. While we were sorting through the hundreds of peer recommendations in eight dental specialties, we ran across the story of a Baltimore man whose life was changed by a nearly 100 percent dental overhaul that is opening new doors for him, both personally and professionally. Our Adviser

Dr. Herbert M. Mendelson

Our adviser on the Top Dentists peer-polling process this year was Dr. Herbert M. Mendelson. Mendelson, who has been on the Top Dentists list himself in the past, is an assistant clinical professor of advanced studies in oral implantology at the New York University College of Dentistry, was appointed to the dean’s faculty of the University of Maryland School of Dentistry, and maintains a private practice with his father, Dr. Harold Mendelson, in Owings Mills. He received a bachelor’s degree in economics from George Washington University and a DDS from the Medical College of Virginia, he completed a residency at the University of Pennsylvania, he holds a certificate in surgical and prosthetic oral implantology from the New York University College of Dentistry, and he is active in numerous professional organizations.
