Guinness Open Gate Brewery. 5001 Washington Blvd. 11 a.m.-10 p.m.

Since the Guinness Open Gate Brewery in Halethorpe reopened to the public a few months back, its lush lawn has become a favorite spot for sipping craft drafts while maintaining a safe distance. And this weekend, the team is ringing in Oktoberfest the best way they know how—by bringing back some of its most festive beers. Stop by the second-annual Oktoberfest celebration to down drafts of the aptly named German festival beer, Festbier, as well as Guinness’ Dunkel Lager made with all German malts and hops. If you’d prefer to celebrate at home, both varieties will be available in cans for purchase on site or curbside pickup.

Lace up your walking shoes and get out of the house for this six-block long outdoor art exhibition featuring neon works by seven artists––including Laure Drogoul and Akea Brionne Brown. While strolling down Bolton Street, learn more about the many ways neon can be used to communicate (and sell) thoughts, feelings, and ideas. Bonus: the works make for great Instagram photo-ops.

Despite the havoc that the coronavirus wreaked on the city’s spring and summer events calendar, local purveyors have found socially distant ways to bring the community together for a (somewhat) normal night of entertainment. Fadensonnen—the beer garden and natural wine and sake bar in Old Goucher—has been doing just that all summer long, with live music, DJ sets, and, now, a Haitian cookout with island jams by DJ JDay. Stop by the courtyard on Sunday afternoon to enjoy plantains, spiced chicken, and leafy greens from Sobeachy Haitian Cuisine, and stick around to hear DJ JDay spin island grooves into the night.

It’s a well-known fact that Baltimoreans with a rooftop deck—or any private outdoor space, really—have become the envy of all other city dwellers during the pandemic. This Saturday, put your rooftop to even better use by hosting a quarantine “pod party” to support The Buddy Foundation of Maryland, a local nonprofit that helps save dogs’ lives. Register to participate in Charm City Rooftop Day and receive a party pack filled with essentials like Tito’s Handmade Vodka, gourmet dog treats from Dog Chef, social-distancing markers, and hand sanitizer.

While the Baltimore-centric pieces will be on display through October, stop by the sidewalk opening on Friday to hear live music by local jazz star Brandon Woody’s group, Upendo, and take home a print to commemorate this unforgettable period in the city’s history.

Lisa Hinton and her sibs, Drew Baker and Ashli Johnson, have poured their tremendous youthful energy into their family property to transform it into one of Maryland’s most respected wineries. Lisa has quickly grown into her role as winemaker, as evidenced by her 2016 Anthem, a red Bordeaux-style blend. Deep red fruit tones from Cabernet Franc, structure from Cabernet Sauvignon, and lip- smacking acidity from Petit Verdot make this a delicious local wine for hearty meals.

Typically, we only get 365 days in a year to have fun. But, every four years, we have an extra day. For Leap Day 2020, many local breweries and restaurants are celebrating with parties, specials, and new beer releases on Saturday, February 29. Here’s where to make the most of the extra day and enjoy the festivities:

Bmore Brew Bus Tour: The second-annual Bmore Brew Bus Tour, where locals hunt down the best craft beer that Charm City has to offer, is taking place on Saturday. With stops at Guinness, Heavy Seas, Jailbreak, and Crooked Crab breweries, there will be plenty to see and taste. A ticket includes a tour of Guinness, a complimentary beer or flight from each location, round trip transportation, and snacks. Multiple locations. $89.

Checkerspot Brewing Company: Checkerspot in South Baltimore is tapping into the leap year with unlimited pours. The “Big Beer Leap Year” event will bring back limited-edition beers from the past two years. The brewery will open an hour early for VIP admission, and at 1 p.m. for regular admission. Old favorites being served will include “Golden Strongman,” “Jean Quad,” “Barrel Aged Jean Quad,” “Elijah Craig Bourbon Barrel Big Wig Brown,” and the “Wild Turkey Bourbon Barrel Big Wig Brown,” which are all from 2018. Last year’s special beers will include the “High & Mighty IPA” and the “Bear Imperial Porter.” All beers are first come first serve, so be sure to get there early before the taps run dry. 1399 S. Sharp St. $35 regular admission, $50 VIP.

Oliver Brewing Company: At Oliver Brewing Company’s tasting room in East Baltimore, sample five new can releases starting at 12 p.m. to celebrate the extra day of the year. Among them is “I Wish I Was At The Yard,” a dry-hopped pale ale created in collaboration with Monument City Brewing Company. Next up is the “Fruit Can Man V3,” an imperial sour brewed with tart cherry, red currant, and raspberry. “Undulatus” is a hazy IPA with a cream finish. The newest collaboration with Stillwater Artisanal is “The Future Isn’t What It Used To Be,” a double dry-hopped IPA. This duo also collaborated with Chesapeake Cider Company to create the “Apple Cobbler Fruit Shake,” a nitro sour ale with apple, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and milk sugar. With plenty of exciting flavors coming out, Oliver Brewing Company has many options to choose from. Pair your can with a slice from Dizzy Cow Pizzeria, which will be slinging delicious pies all day long. 4216 Shannon Dr.

Diamondback Beer: The celebration at this South Baltimore brewery will double as a release for its new barrel-aged Barleywine, as well as a launch party for its new Tour & Tasting program. Diamondback’s new traditional English Barleywine is aged for 16 months in Tawny Port, red zinfandel, and muscat barrels before being blended together—creating the final product, the “Liquid Richie.” The new Tour & Tasting Program will provide three different chances to experience Diamondback’s brewing process on Saturday. Tour the production facility, experience a guided tasting of four special releases, and bring home a swag bag all for the price of $25. The taproom will be serving $5 “Green Machine” pints all day, and feature live music by Nate & Friends from 2-4 p.m. 1215 E Fort Ave, Suite #008.

Union Craft Brewing: Cleverly honoring the date, Union Craft Brewing will offer an array of beer deals from 2:29-9:29 p.m. on Saturday. Buy two beers for $9 and spend your afternoon soaking up the extra day. With nine beers on tap, you have plenty of time to try them all during this seven-hour event. 1700 W 41st St.

Monument City Brewing Company: This Highlandtown hangout just announced a surprise release party on Saturday for “NOBO,” its New England-style IPA. Overflowing with juicy flavors from its triple hopping, the beer will be available in limited drafts and cases. Starting at 12 p.m., this will be the only drop of the year for “NOBO,” so beer lovers are encouraged to come and get it while it’s available. Monument City will also be filling up its first time capsule, and the team is accepting contributions from the public. The time capsule will be sealed and buried underneath the brewhouse until February 29, 2024, so be sure to return in four years to claim your keepsakes. 1 N Haven St.

Bond Street Social: If a cocktail is your preferred drink of choice, Bond Street Social in Fells Point is ready to supply. The waterfront favorite will be hosting a $28 open bar from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., in which party-goers will be served premium well mixed drinks, domestic bottled beer, and house red and white wines. 901 S Bond St.

Final Farewell Party at Howl at the Moon: Howl at the Moon at Power Plant Live is hosting its final event of the year before it closes and moves to Washington, D.C. From 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. enjoy drink specials, live music, and more. 22 Market Pl.

Free Birthday Cake at Miss Shirley’s Cafe: Leap Day only comes every four years, which is why Miss Shirley’s is offering a special birthday surprise for Leap Day babies. On Saturday, any guest who was born on February 29 will receive a free cake. Choose between the “Crab Cake Po’Boy” or a tall stack of specialty pancakes to celebrate your big day. This offer is only available on Saturday, and is redeemable at any Miss Shirley’s Cafe location. Tell your server that you would like to redeem the Leap Day promotion, present a valid ID, and enjoy your free cake. Multiple locations including 750 E Pratt St.

The Tilted Row: The Bolton Hill dining scene continues to soar with new culinary concepts like Noona’s, which opened last winter, and CookHouse, a spinoff of On the Hill cafe slated to debut this fall. Adding to that momentum is The Tilted Row, which is now officially open on the bottom floor of the Jordan apartment complex on McMechen Street. Decorated with warm woods and pops of navy and gold, the bistro is the brainchild of Ziad Maalouf—who owns Cafe Fili in Mt. Vernon. Chef Andrew Thomas, previously of Donna’s and The Elephant, serves up dishes like lamb ribs with smoked tzatziki, duck fried rice with kimchi and wild mushrooms, and a sorghum-brined pork chop with roasted asparagus. There are also fine-tuned iterations of Charm City classics like crab deviled eggs with Old Bay mousse and cast iron crab cakes served alongside a colorful succotash. At the bar, Woodberry Kitchen alum Hannah Baker features creative cocktails, 10 beers on tap, and a collection of more than 120 single malts and bourbons.

Honey’s Cafe: This new Pigtown hangout is continuing the lively spirit that Cafe Jovial left behind. Honey’s replaced the longtime neighborhood favorite on Washington Boulevard earlier this month, serving breakfast and lunch fare in the cozy cafe that offers plenty of natural light. Owner Bri Ash features dishes including red velvet waffles, French toast topped with fried apples, shrimp and grits, and steak and eggs. To pair with the food, a lengthy list of specialty coffee drinks includes dirty chai lattes and black-and-white “Tuxedo” mochas.

NEWS

Mouth Party Caramel at The Spotlight Shop: Locals strolling around the Inner Harbor might have noticed M&T Bank’s new Spotlight Shop—a 24-by-20-foot custom boutique that is stationed at 300 East Pratt St. Through September, six small businesses will set up shop inside the retail space to peddle their locally-made products. The rotation started out with The Dollhouse Boutique earlier this month, and through June 25, Mouth Party Caramel will be showing off its custom confections in the space. Other merchants on deck to take over the pop-up this summer include Zeke’s Coffee, Cake by Jason, Becket Hitch, and The Charmery.

Ravage Deli Brings Back Breakfast Pop-Up: It’s going to be a great weekend for this foodie haven in Perry Hall, which has become known for its mile-high sandwiches and massive orders of duck-fat fries. This Saturday at 4 p.m., the Travel Channel is re-airing an episode of Food Paradise that features Ravage. Then, the deli—which is typically only open for lunch and dinner—is bringing back its occasional breakfast pop-up menu on Sunday from 7:30-10:30 a.m. Rise early to feast on creative morning dishes like BLT Quiche, Belgian waffles topped with Oops All Berries cereal, and a “Maryland Mash-Up Wrap” that bundles steak, scrapple, and crab dip inside an Old Bay tortilla.

Magdalena Launches Sunday Supper: Historically, Magdalena in Mt. Vernon has been closed on Sundays. But recently, executive chef Mark Levy has opened the restaurant on Sunday evenings for a traditional supper service inspired by his native England. As a nod to gatherings with the whole family at his grandmother’s home outside of London, he’s launched a menu of UK favorites with a fine-dining spin. Among them are fish and chips with pea puree and tartar sauce, English pea ravioli with wild mushrooms, and crispy duck leg confit with house-made tater tots. Diners can order from an a la carte menu, or opt for the three-course prix-fixe for $58.

6/29: Rye Street Cookout
Nothing says summer like taking in waterfront views from an Adirondack chair. At Rye Street Tavern’s recurring community cookout in Port Covington, you can do just that while enjoying live music and classic barbecue bites. The next iteration will feature the soulful sounds of Joi Carter Trio and one-day-only specials like Virginian chicken, seasonal burgers, and a crab boil in a bag. Bring the family (dogs included) and a lawn chair or blanket for the lush lawn.

6/29: Checkerspot One Year Anniversary Party
This South Baltimore brewery is celebrating its first birthday in style with an all-day block party from 12-11 p.m. The festivities will kick off with a ceremonial tapping of the kilderkin at noon, followed by The Racket and Q Randall playing live music outside, and DJ Mikie Love spinning in the taproom all day long. Smoked meats will be provided by the local barbecue experts with Team Loud Que, and, of course, there will be plenty of beers flowing in the first and second-floor taprooms throughout the entire party.

Just five days before its grand opening last October, the city’s Departments of Transportation and Public Works began a large-scale infrastructure improvement overhaul just outside of the space on Central Avenue. The owners have struggled to make up for the loss of foot traffic since then, and last week, they officially closed the restaurant for good. “It saddens us to announce that Blue Dog will be closed indefinitely,” reads a sign posted to the front door. “Thanks for your support.” Throughout its short run, reviewers raved about Blue Dog’s ribs, sausages, chicken, and pulled pork, which were all prepared using a wood smoker in the building’s adjacent courtyard.

COMING SOON

Broadway Market: Earlier this week, Mayor Catherine Pugh announced six stalls that will be setting up shop inside the renovated Broadway Market in Fells Point this winter. Slated to debut in February, the north shed of the redesigned public market will house local icon Connie’s Chicken & Waffles, farmers’ market favorite Thai Street, social justice-driven ice cream purveyor Taharka Bros., Hampden-based Indian eatery The Verandah, and Old Boy—an authentic Korean concept from Phil Han of Dooby’s. Han will also operate the market’s centerpiece bar, which will feature an elevated coffee program and brunch menu during the day, and draft beer and cocktails in the evening.

Returning to the revamped space will be longtime vendors Sal’s Seafood, Vikki’s Fells Point Deli, and Sophia’s Place, the European cafe and bakery that first opened in the market in 1986. There is still one stall that has yet to be leased. Once the north shed reopens, construction will begin on the south shed, which will house collaborative seafood spot The Choptank from Atlas Restaurant Group and Captain James Landing. 1640 Aliceanna St.

Lyfe Cafe: Be on the lookout for this new dining destination at The Shops at Kenilworth while checking out the mall’s beloved holiday train garden this season. Expected to open in early 2019 (just in time to get started on those New Year’s resolutions), the healthful spot from local owner Penny Seabolt will feature an all-day menu prepared with ingredients that promote physical and mental wellness (think protein pancakes and waffles, a kale detox salad with lemon-tahini dressing, smoothie bowls, and wellness shots). The eatery is designed to accommodate every major diet—including low-calorie, gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan, and vegetarian—and will also offer meal prep services. The 1,788-square-foot cafe will be located next to Wilkes & Riley on the ground level of the recently-renovated Towson shopping plaza. 800 Kenilworth Drive, Towson

OPEN

The Common Kitchen: The food hall trend—which has taken off in Baltimore with spots like R. House, Mount Vernon Marketplace, and the upcoming Whitehall Mill—has now spread to Clarksville with this new communal space that will house 11 artisan makers. A grand opening celebration is scheduled for this Saturday, November 10, where local schools will perform live music and vendors like Scoop & Paddle ice cream and Indian street food shop Namaste Foodie will offer opening day specials. Located near Food Plenty inside the environmentally sustainable Clarksville Commons, the gathering space will mark the first food hall in all of Howard County. Other stalls to look out for include Egyptian eatery Koshary by Misteka, bubble tea purveyor Royaltea, barbecue joint Smokin’ on the Bayou, and Trifecto—a coffee and juice bar specializing in Ceremony Coffee drinks and colorful acai bowls. 12240 Clarksville Pike, Clarksville. 301-854-2090

Pat’s Select Pizza and Asian Garden: These new BYOB restaurants are opening next door to one another at the Crestridge Center in Cockeysville this month. The eateries are expected to be popular lunch destinations in the development, which features two office buildings and one retail property. Pat’s, a fast-casual pizza chain that is now open, features its signature brick-oven pies alongside flatbreads, burgers, salads, and a lengthy list of pasta dishes. Slated to debut next week, Asian Garden will highlight Chinese, Japanese, and Thai staples ranging from sushi to bowls of lo mein and pad thai. 10151-10155 York Road, Cockeysville

EPICUREAN EVENTS

11/12: Sweat: Our World, Your Stage
Everyman Theatre is known for bridging the gap between the food and theater world. The downtown showhouse is continuing that creativity with a Veteran’s Day event at Checkerspot Brewing that ties into the themes of Everyman’s current production, Sweat—a slice-of-life drama about steel mill workers facing a plant shutdown who routinely gather at their neighborhood bar. Make your way to the South Baltimore brewery to sip craft beers while watching scenes from the play, and listening in on a conversation comparing the themes in the script to the current hardships facing our own neighbors. Ten percent of all ticket proceeds will benefit South Baltimore-based nonprofit The Baltimore Station, which works to support homeless veterans and reintegrate them into the workforce. 1399 S. Sharp St. 6-8:30 p.m. $15

11/16: Intercostal Breakdown
Fittingly named after the anatomical term that means “situated between the ribs,” this one-night-only barbecue pop-up, hosted by food writer Amy Langrehr of Charm City Cook, will feature smoked ribs cooked on custom-built cages and grills. Head to Monument City Brewing in Highlandtown to sample meats prepared by chef Patrick Morrow of South Point and chef Damian Mosley of Blacksauce Kitchen. The evening will also feature $5 Monument City beers all night, and Annapolis-based folk rockers Ampersand Stringband playing live from 7:30-9:30 p.m. 1 N. Haven St. Free. 5-10 p.m.

Usually when the weather gets chilly (or, in this case, becomes a sopping mess), craft breweries get ready to release stronger, more robust beers. We love imperial stouts and flavored porters as much as the next person, but this fall we’re seeing a trend towards more session beers—aka lower octane, lighter, more crisp varieties. Lagers, in particular, have become more popular on a national level.

“The world is so saturated with IPAs and hazy beers, which have their place and definitely sell the best, but there’s something to be said for lagers,” says Colin Marshall, co-owner of Diamondback Brewing Company in Locust Point. “They are crisp and refreshing and you can drink two of them without your head buzzing. You’re in it to enjoy the full 16 ounces.”

Throughout the fall, Diamondback will be releasing three beers characterized by the style starting this week with Everything All The Time, a pale Helles lager, followed by a Kolsch called Atmospheric Changes, and a Märzen with the appropriately German name Pretzel Logic. Aside from the clean flavor profile, lagers are appealing to Marshall because of their fascinating brewing process.

“We love the maturation time, watching the beer change in the tank, and really learning how the yeast is interacting—how it cleans up from week to week,” Marshall explains. “The process really teaches you patience with beer, which is usually very ‘go, go, go.'”

All that patience will pay off when Diamondback hosts Stein Day on September 29, a festival where guest will get a 10-ounce glass and three pours with admission. The event will feature all three beers (as well as a pilsner), a traditional polka band, glass blowing from McFadden Art Glass, and German fare from 101 Baltimore.

“The season turn from this triple-digit heat into more of the flannel-sweater weather kind of excites people,” Marshall says. “They feel like they can indulge a little more—especially in beer.”

No matter what style you favor, light lagers or heavy stouts and everything in between, these local breweries have some exciting new releases (and welcome re-releases) sure to make the transition to fall that much easier.

Flying Dog Brewery: Sunday Best
Brewed especially for the Baltimore Ravens, this light lager clocks in at only 5-percent ABV. The camo-clad can premiered at M&T Bank Stadium this past Sunday and will be available all season long.

Waverly Brewing Company: Batty Noh
Yes, you read that right. This fun-loving brewery located in Waverly is releasing its take on the historically Baltimore beer, but their bohemian-style, lower ABV brew is made with real Maryland corn.

Independent Brewing Company: Your Move Paulie!
As the gold medal winner in the 2018 World Beer Cup German Märzen category, this seasonal beer is one not to miss. The light-bodied lager, with a 6-percent ABV, just got tapped at the Bel Air brewery.

Union Craft Brewing: Balt
This German-style amber ale has become a fall go-to for its clean, dry flavor profile and, new this year, debuted in a 16-ounce tall boy can. (While you’re picking up a sixer at the brewery, don’t forget about Foxy Red IPA, which has a lighter body and extra wallop of hops this year.)

Monument City Brewing: Roadways
As a part of the brewery’s Haven series, to benefit Trash Free Maryland and Blue Water Baltimore, this October release is a double rye IPA inspired by Monument’s citrusy and spicy flagship 51 Rye, but clocking in at 8.5-percent ABV.

Black Flag Brewing: Oktoberfest
This Columbia brewery returns with its Oktoberfest party featuring its titular beer that, this year, has a new lager yeast strain but still maintains its crisp, malty flavor profile. Other beers to look out for include pumpkin beer Basic Bee and Crimson Clouds, an upcoming Thanksgiving-themed Sour IPA.

Peabody Heights: Astrodon
This co-op brewery just released a hazy IPA with notes of guava and passionfruit, which is going to be a year-round core beer. The 7-percent ABV is named the Maryland state dinosaur (who knew?) and is available at local bars in the brewery’s taproom.

Checkerspot Brewing
Though they haven’t picked out a name for this beer quite yet, this newly opened South Baltimore brewery continues on its path of wild ingredients and daring brewing techniques with a Belgian quad they are aging on bourbon-soaked dates and releasing in October. Look out for parties at Barfly’s and Wiley Gunter’s.

Heavy Seas Beer: Great’er Pumpkin
One of our very favorite pumpkin beers nationwide, this imperial ale is aged in bourbon barrels and clocks in at 10-percent ABV. With notes of cinnamon, allspice, ginger, clove, brown sugar, and vanilla, this very autumnal ale is available now.

Fornicolli’s: There’s a new spot to grab late-night slices after last call on weekends in Federal Hill. The team behind Das Bier Haus on Light Street has transformed the space next door into a traditional Italian eatery and carry-out. Helmed by chef Mark Dunaway—formerly of now-closed Regi’s American Bistro up the street—the menu features staples like pizza, a classic Caesar salad, chicken parmesan, baked ziti, and an Italian cold cut sub, as well as snacks like Buffalo cauliflower and fried cheese steak eggrolls. The shop is open for dinner service weekly and extends its hours until 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. 1538 Light St., 443-439-5137

Checkerspot Brewing: Husband-and-wife brewers Rob and Judy Neff (who has her Ph.D in microbiology), and their business partner Steve Marsh—who founded the cask program at Heavy Seas Beer a decade ago—will finally open their South Baltimore taproom to the public on Saturday, June 30 at 12 p.m. Complete with driftwood, hanging plants, and old farm pulleys, the brewery aims to bring the outside in. “We really wanted to celebrate where beer ingredients come from,” Neff says. “We’re trying to bring nature and the city together all in one place.” Checkerspot’s beers make use of ingredients from local farms like Baugher’s in Reisterstown. There’s also a cask-conditioned Keeper’s Stout, which is fortified with crab shells from J.M. Clayton Seafood Company. Other drafts to look out for throughout opening weekend include the Juniperus juniper IPA, Southside pale ale, and Saison de Fleur. 1399 S. Sharp St.

Opening on July 2, the neighborhood cafe and bar on the waterfront will feature a menu from chef Allysa Storms with salads and grain bowls, wood-fired pizzas, burgers, sandwiches, and heartier entrees like Cajun Chesapeake rockfish. The laid-back spot highlights harborside seating, as well as an elevated dining deck overlooking the marina at Lighthouse Point. 2760 Lighthouse Point, 410-675-8888

Earth Treks’ bouldering gym opened in early June and Union’s taproom debuted soon after. Now, The Charmery is ready to unveil its third retail location in the space—which also houses an expanded production kitchen that will make ice cream for all three of the shop’s locations. Officially opening on Monday, July 2, the new space is as whimsical as The Charmery’s ice cream flavors (think egg custard and the cereal-infused “Saturday Morning Cartoons”), boasting a coin-activated ice cream cone ride, giant Rube Goldberg crank-operated machine, and ice cream truck seating booth—all created by local artists and designers. 1700 W. 41st St.

Nori: Hampden locals might have noticed a new sign towering over the former Corner Charcuterie Bar while strolling on The Avenue recently.
Patterson Public House: The Patterson Park community was at a loss when longtime neighborhood spot BistroRx closed its doors in the spring. But now, locals Tanya Gralto and Scott Lanphear are reopening the space as Patterson Public House—a tavern serving bar classics and locally sourced seasonal fare. Though the spot isn’t expected to debut until mid-July, the team is hosting a pop-up at R. House in Remington this week to give locals a sneak peek of what’s to come. Swing by the stall from now until July 8 to taste burgers, fries, and classic half-smokes from the restaurant’s new chefs Scott Bacon—formerly of the Brewer’s Art—and Cai Lindeman, who cut his chops at The Dabney in Washington, D.C. 301 W. 29th St.

Checkerspot Brewing: After years of anticipation, a grand opening date for this South Baltimore brewery is finally in sight. Husband-and-wife brewers Rob and Judy Neff (who has her Ph.D in microbiology), and their business partner Steve Marsh—an industry veteran who founded the cask program at Heavy Seas Beer more than a decade ago—will officially open the taproom to the public on Saturday, June 30 at 12 p.m. Named after the state butterfly of Maryland, Checkerspot will feature signature releases including the Juniperus IPA and Two Paws Ale—a pale ale brewed in collaboration with Flying Dog Brewery that is made with 100-percent local malt, galaxy hops, honey, and paw-paw fruits. 175 W.
Blue Dog BBQ Company: Harbor East diners have been feeling the void ever since Dinosaur Bar-B-Que closed up shop in the neighborhood earlier this year. But now, a new destination for fingerlickin’ fare is making its way into the area. Set to open in the former home of Heavy Seas Alehouse, which closed suddenly earlier this month, local catering company Blue Dog BBQ will serve its signature whole-hog fare made with a wood-only smoking method. “No gas-assisted smokers allowed!” co-owner Sean Stoll quipped in a statement. The old Heavy Seas space is housed in the historic Tack Factory Building on Bank Street, which Stoll says is “the perfect fit” for his business. “It allows us to create world class BBQ the way it was meant to be made,” he adds. Blue Dog is expected to debut next month, and will offer lunch and dinner service six nights per week. 1300 Bank St.

Cheese Galore & More: In other South Baltimore news, this longtime Cross Street Market tenant is moving into a brick-and-mortar home around the corner in Federal Hill later this month. The cheese and sweets shop will soon open in the former HarborQue space on South Charles Street, offering beer, wine, pasta sauces, baguettes, Zeke’s Coffee, and all of the essentials for building a bona fide charcuterie board. 1125 S. Featured dishes will include char-broiled Japanese ayu and sawagani crabs, squab tortellini with beets and blueberries, octopus with fava pureé, and spring lamb diablo with English peas.

On a sunny day in February, about a dozen brewers, writers, and beer aficionados gathered in the basement of a Patterson Park row home. There, they tapped kegs and casks of some experimental beers (like a milk stout fortified with crab shells) and each person scored the beers and wrote down their opinions on 3×5 cards.

Call it grassroots marketing, field research, or maybe the most fun focus group ever. This is part of the strategy behind Checkerspot Brewing, which is opening in South Baltimore by the end of this year. For the past 18 months, the team behind Checkerspot—Judy Neff, her husband Rob, and their partner Steve Marsh—have been hosting in-home taste tests, collaborating with established breweries, and strengthening their relationships with local farms as they prepare for the opening.

“I am taking the leap to turn my passion into a career,” says Judy, who has a Ph.D in microbiology and has been home-brewing for 12 years. “We thought the smartest approach was to get to know all the brewers in Maryland—work with them, get their advice and expertise. It’s one of the few industries where there really is very little competition.”

Checkerspot Brewing—named after the state butterfly of Maryland—will be located at 175 W. Ostend Street, a stone’s throw from M&T Bank Stadium and Horseshoe Casino. Judy says opening the brewery has been a long-time coming and they are so excited to have the expertise of Marsh, who started the cask program at Heavy Seas Beer a decade ago.

“They’re one of the top producers of cask beer in American and Steve was instrumental in starting that up,” she says. “But he’s also been sourcing local hops and fruits from Maryland farms since it was sort of this unknown entity. Back then, a farmer growing peaches wasn’t thinking they could sell it to brewers.”

But that movement has certainly changed and Marsh’s agricultural connections are paying off. In May, the brewery collaborated with Frederick-based Flying Dog to release Two Paws Ale, a pale ale brewed with 100-percent local malt from Chesapeake Malting and paw-paw fruits and honey.

“Not surprisingly, smaller farms produce the most flavorful ingredients,” she said. “We want people to get back to understanding the circle of life from a beer perspective.”

Checkerspot also wants to get a real survey of their future market, which is why the Neffs have hosted two in-home taste tests to get feedback about their beer. The first one was a range of different styles and the second one focused primarily on saisons.

“It helps remind you that you’re not just brewing beer for your own palette,” Judy said. “Our goal isn’t to focus on just one style and try to be as open as possible to all tastes and preferences.”

So far, Checkerspot’s core beers include the milk stout with crab shells, which is their play on an oyster stout. They’ll also have a juniper IPA in the rotation, which plays with juicy, candy-type hops and the piny notes of the juniper berry. They’ll also feature at least one high ABV beer, as well as two cask options. The brewery itself is a 10,000-square-foot space with a two-floor taproom that will overlook a giant brew house with 22-foot ceilings.

“The location really can’t be beat,” she said. “South Baltimore really has a strong neighborhood feel where people are passionate about supporting local. We’re just really hoping this will be a fun place to hang out and that we’ll be known for our great beers.”
