Although Baltimore might not be healed from the Ravens’ early playoff loss, this year’s Super Bowl matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs is Sunday, and it’s time to celebrate the biggest event in football season. Super Bowl parties call for burgers, wings, beer, and more beer, and what better place to celebrate than at a local hotspot? So sit back, relax, and check out these neighborhood bars for various deals that pair perfectly with a view of the game.

Crossbar: If you’re looking to grab a few drinks before the game starts, Crossbar in Federal Hill will be featuring deals from open to close. Enjoy $3 domestic beers, $5 Smirnoff bombs and Rumple Minze shots, $7 Miller Lite liters, $10 Blue Moon liters, $15 domestic buckets, and a $20 deal on eight wings and any liter of beer. 18 E Cross St.

Hair of the Dog: Head to South Baltimore for $30 bottomless domestic drafts, rail liquor, and house wine to pair with the game-day buffet. Hair of the Dog will be starting its Super Bowl party at 5:30 p.m. and hosting various giveaways and raffles throughout. 1649 S Hanover St. 5:30 p.m.

The Point in Fells: This Fells Point favorite will be pouring $6 Ravens Crushes, $6 game-day bombs, $12 Bud Light pitchers, and $15 domestic buckets starting at 3 p.m. Join the “Ravens Club,” and drink from a bottomless glass for $25, which can be filled with domestic drafts, Truly hard seltzers, Ice Picks, vodka lemonades, or screwdrivers. The game will be displayed on all TV’s with the sound up high, so there’s no need to worry about missing a play. 1738 Thames St. 3 p.m.

Mother’s Federal Hill Grille: While best known for their Purple Patio events during Ravens home games, Mother’s in Federal Hill will still be celebrating the Super Bowl and serving up game-day favorites. For $30 during the game you can enjoy a tailgate-themed buffet (think meatballs and wings), as well as an open bar featuring beer and rail drinks. 1113 S Charles St. 6:30 p.m.

Pratt Street Ale House: This viewing party will feature drink deals including $3 select domestic bottles, as well as $5 Oliver Brewing Company pints, glasses of wine, and rail drinks. Known for its soft pretzels and beer cheese, the menu of gastropub fare at Pratt Street Ale House has something for everyone. If you’re hoping to cheer on your favorite team from Hampden, check out Pratt Street’s sister-spot Five and Dime Ale House on the Avenue for the exact same deals. 206 W Pratt St. 6:30 p.m.

Nacho Mama’s: While not your traditional sports bar, Nacho Mama’s locations in Towson and Canton will be showing the Super Bowl with various specials. Starting at 6:30 p.m. you can enjoy $1 Natty Boh drafts, $3 domestic bottles, $6 Graceland margaritas and bombs, and $15 Graceland hubcaps. Pair your drink with a $6 burgers, ground beef nachos with queso, or buffalo tenders. 2907 O’Donnell St. and 2 W Pennsylvania Ave. 6:30 p.m.

Kona Grill: Inner Harbor staple Kona Grill will be serving up all-day happy hour for football fanatics. If the bar scene isn’t for you, they are also promoting their tailgate package for $99, which includes two orders of chicken satay, pepperoni and margherita flatbread, Kona sliders, lettuce wraps, and potstickers, for dine-in and to-go service. 1 E Pratt St. 11 a.m.

Tailgate Checklist

Mother’s Grille: At some point this season, be sure to stop by the legendary Purple Patio tailgate that Mother’s Grille hosts before every Ravens home game. Just a few blocks from M&T Bank Stadium, Mother’s paints the outdoor parking lot to look like a football field—although you might not be able to see the details under a crush of purple-clad partygoers sipping $35 all-you-can-drink beers and Bloody Marys, watching the pregame on one of 65 TVs, or getting amped beneath the DJ booth. 1113 S. Charles St., 410-244-8686.

Jimmy’s Famous Seafood: If you’re a tailgate buff, you’ve got to try out Jimmy’s Famous Seafood’s self-proclaimed TailGOAT (that’s Greatest Of All Time) and decide for yourself whether it lives up to the name. At a new location just steps from the stadium, TailGOAT boasts an open bar with eight beer selections, a hand-crafted buffet, and live music to prove that the only season worth celebrating is football season. 333 West Ostend St., 410-633-4040.

Bmore Around Town: BMore Around Town stands as the pioneer of the #PurpleTailgate, organizing blowouts for home games and road trips for the most dedicated fans. This year, #PurpleTailgate patrons will enjoy an open bar with unlimited beer cans and Deep Eddy crushes, catering from All Y’all BBQ and Mother Shuckers oysters, and raffles to benefit the Kamryn Lambert Foundation. 152 West Ostend St., 443-865-5935.

Nothing warms your soul quite like a hearty bowl of chili or a craft beer on a cold day. In years past, local homebrewing club Baltibrew has brought the two together for its annual Chilibrew competition at Zion Lutheran Church.

“Obviously chili is a great fall favorite,” says Jacob Wolf, a longtime Baltibrew member. “And there’s nothing better than spicy chili with a cold beer. When you pair the two together, they make a great team.”

Aside from the seasonal appeal, Wolf adds that the pairing also makes sense conceptually. He says that, much like beer, chili is versatile and allows home cooks to really get creative with their recipes.

“There are all different types of beers and people like to seek out their own unique styles,” he says. “Chili has that same draw. A home cook can take a favorite chili recipe and make it their own in that same spirit of making home-brewed beer.”

In honor the official start of chili season, we rounded up some of the best recipes in town. Here’s where to get your fix:

Abbey Burger Bistro: Head to this beloved burger spot, which has locations on both sides of the harbor and a new addition in Mt. Washington, to sample “Big Al’s” chili made Southern style with a signature blend of spices. Order a bowl as a starter, or go all out with the cavatappi chili mac and cheese. Multiple locations including 1041 Marshall St. 443-453-9698.

Baltimore Soup Company: The daily rotation at this Towson soup spot includes a Texas beef chili that stews angus beef with green peppers, kidney beans, green chiles, onions, garlic, and Southwestern seasonings. The eatery offers specialty soup orders by the gallon if you’re hoping to stock up for the cold season. 3 W. Chesapeake Ave., Towson, 443-275-2325

Duda’s Tavern: Regulars at this decades-old staple in Fells Point rave about its crab cakes and burger specials. But another must-try on the menu is the house chili bake, which is a safe bet if you need to warm up on a cold day. The dish tops mild chili with onions, housemade croutons, and a generous helping of cheddar cheese and warms it all together in the oven. 1600 Thames St. 410-276-9719

Five and Dime Ale House: If you need a spot to retreat from the cold while strolling along the Avenue in Hampden, head inside this corner pub to choose from a lengthy list of local beers, sandwiches, flatbreads, tacos, and other snacks. You can’t go wrong starting things off with a cup of sweet-and-spicy alehouse chili garnished with sour cream and shreds of cheddar. 901 W. 36th St. 443-835-2179

The Flying Avocado Cafe: Vegans frequently flock to this health-conscious cafe in Owings Mills for colorful salads and dairy-free dishes. The bright eatery also makes a killer vegan chili with black, pinto, and kidney beans, as well as crushed tomatoes and a blend of chili spices. 10210 S. Dolfield Rd., Owings Mills. 443-471-2600

G&A Restaurant: Since 1927, this Highlandtown favorite has been slinging its signature Coney Island hot dogs topped with onions, ketchup, mustard, cheese, and, of course, an age-old chili sauce. The recipe, which was featured on an episode of Food Network’s Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives, blends ground beef with paprika, celery salt, and chili powder. 3802 Eastern Ave. 410-276-9422

Max’s Taphouse: It only makes sense that this Fells Point corner bar—which features thousands of bottles, five casks, and more than 100 taps—would incorporate beer into its chili recipe. The hearty helping is topped with the classic cheese and onions and served in a bread bowl with tortilla chips. 737 S. Broadway. 410-675-6297

Mother’s Grille: Snag a seat at this Federal Hill hangout to catch a game while digging into traditional tailgate fare. Aside from the stellar Buffalo wings, soft pretzels, and nachos, Mother’s also highlights a black bean chili made with seasoned ground beef. Customize your bowl with toppings like bacon, cheese, and sour cream. 1113 S. Charles St. 410-244-8686

Pickles Pub: This pregame spot across from Camden Yards has all of the essential sports snacks. (Don’t miss the namesake beer-battered pickles.) The soup menu lists Guinness stew, a classic Maryland crab, and the fan-favorite “Gameday Chili” made with ground beef and topped with fresh jalapeño, onions, cheddar, and sour cream. 520 Washington Blvd. 410-752-1784

Spirits Tavern: At this cozy watering hole in Upper Fells Point, the “Hot Rod Chili” served with house tortilla chips is a staple. On Mondays, order a bowl of the Natty Boh-infused soup either simple style or topped with “the works” (onions, sour cream, and cheese). 1901 Bank St. 410-563-1612

After watching the master street-painting artists work on their chalk masterpieces, enjoy al fresco dining specials, art lectures, and workshops throughout the historic neighborhood all weekend long.

They haven’t performed together in quite some time, but this Sunday, the boys are back and ready to bring the house down with boogie-ready tunes off their most recent album, Mannish Boys, including favorites “Heavy Petting,” “Got Soul,” and “The Runaround.” And head to the Metro Gallery early for an opening set by Baltimore-based rock-and-soul quartet The Lushpockets.

W. 36th St. 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Free.

On Saturday, Hampden’s can’t-miss block party returns with its annual celebration of one of the city’s most quintessential Bawlmer neighborhoods. Wash down all of the eats with $2 Narraganset Lager cans, $4 Old Hilltop drafts, and $6 vodka drinks. 5700 Newbury St., 410-367-6903

JD’s Smokehouse: We were stoked when this former O’Donnell Square mainstay announced that it would be returning to Canton last year. Now stationed at the corner of South Luzerne and Foster avenues in the space previously occupied by American Harry’s, JD’s is back with its selection of imported beers and finger-licking barbecue. Throughout football season, swing by the new digs to enjoy $2 Natty Bohs, $5 Ravens Crushes, $5 domestic buckets, and $12 Union Craft buckets. Food specials of note include “The Tucker Long” (a smoked sausage hoagie with onions and peppers) for $7.95, and the “A-5 Burger” topped with onions, mushrooms, and provolone with two sides for $9.95. 623 S. Luzerne Ave., 410-522-2266

Wicked Sisters: If you’re looking for a spot to tune in from North Baltimore, this Hampden hangout highlights plenty of flat screens. Gather with other fans to chow down on $2-off select appetizers (think meatballs and sriracha honey Brussels sprouts), $3 Natty Boh drafts, and $4 pours of “Old Man Gjerde”—an ode to owner Charlie Gjerde crafted by The Brewer’s Art. 3845 Falls Road, 410-878-0884

Jimmy’s Seafood: Throughout the years, this Dundalk restaurant has become a go-to for sports fans and local athletes alike. To celebrate the return of the birds, Jimmy’s is debuting a new “Sunday Funday” deal featuring two-for-one drinks during Sunday games. Also new this season, happy hour specials (think $3 Summer Shandy and $7 Crushes) will run until midnight for all Monday-night matchups. 6526 Holabird Ave, Dundalk, 410-633-4040

September 4: Mother’s Pajama Brunch

Mother’s Grille, 1113 S. Charles St., 9 a.m.-2 p.m., 410-244-8686

	It doesn’t get much better than a three-day weekend. But a three-day
weekend featuring half-off hash browns, bennies, and Bloodies during
Sunday brunch is basically perfection. This Sunday, favor flannel and
fleece over shades and sundresses at Mother’s Grille’s bi-annual pajama
brunch. Show up in your jammies (think onesies and fuzzy
slippers—scrubs, sweats, and boxers don’t count) to receive half-off of
your check from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. In true Federal Hill fashion, the menu
includes requisite hair-of-the-dog options like mimosas, sweet tea
vodka, and Arnold Palmer pitchers.

September 2: Grand Reopening of Nepenthe Homebrew

<p "="">Nepenthe Homebrew, 3600 Clipper Mill Road, Suite 130, 11 a.m.-8 p.m., 443-438-4846

Just shy of five weeks after raging flood waters wiped out this
home-brewing haven in Meadow Mill, the beloved business is officially
reopening its doors this weekend with shelves boasting brand new
merchandise. Though community fundraising (including last weekend’s Hope
Floats benefit at Union Craft Brewery which raked in more than $7,500)
gave the company a tremendous boost, co-owner Brian Arnold tells us that
there’s still a ways to go before Nepenthe can afford to get back to
its normal amount of inventory. So this weekend, as the fall brewing
season kicks into gear, support one of our own by stocking up on all of
the kettles, carboys, and cask tools that you can get your hands on.

September 2-4: Baltimore Comic-Con

<p "="">Baltimore Convention Center, 1 W. Pratt St., Times vary, $25-149, 410-649-7000

Don’t be surprised if you spot superheroes strolling around the
Inner Harbor this weekend. Though they won’t actually be warding off
villains, the colorful costumes are a sure indication that Comic-Con has
officially descended upon Charm City. Now in its 17th year, the massive
sci-fi fest is returning to the Baltimore Convention Center for three
jam-packed days of panels, art exhibits, and autograph sessions. Channel
your inner nerd to browse books in Artists Alley, rub elbows with more
than 200 of the industry’s best cartoonists (Kevin Eastman, co-creator
of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, is this year’s guest of honor), and see
who takes the cake at the annual Harvey Awards.

September 3: Bad Boy Family Reunion Tour

<p "="">Royal Farms Arena, 201 W. Baltimore St., 8 p.m., $29.50-125, 410-347-2020

In 1993, after climbing the ranks in New York City’s booming
hip-hop scene, Sean Combs founded Bad Boy Records—the label that
eventually churned out chart-toppers like Mary J. Blige and The
Notorious B.I.G. Now, Combs, who recently revived his Puff Daddy
persona, has launched a nationwide tour to celebrate the artists who
have defined Bad Boy throughout the decades. This weekend, the league of
label-mates, including Lil Kim, 112, Mase, Total, Carl Thomas, The Lox,
Faith Evans, and French Montana, are taking over Royal Farms Arena for a
night of ’90s nostalgia. With so many greats on one stage, we can only
expect that the collaborative tracks (think “I’ll Be Missing You,”
Evans’s tribute to Biggie featuring 112) will be nothing short of
amazing.

DO

September 3: Charles Street 12

<p "="">The Shops at Kenilworth, 800 Kenilworth Drive, Towson, 7:30 a.m., $85-90, 410-645-8266

Running 12 miles on a three-day weekend might sound downright
daunting, but a course that stretches along one of Baltimore’s most
beautiful byways makes it a worthwhile workout. This Sunday, lace up
your running shoes and curate the perfect playlist for Under Armour’s
annual race down historic Charles Street, which steps off from The Shops
at Kenilworth in Towson. Along the way, take in the sights of the
Towson, Loyola, and Johns Hopkins campuses before descending into the
Inner Harbor for a post-race party at Power Plant Live, complete with
lunch, live music, and free beer.

There’s something happening in the Lutherville-Timonium corridor lately. An area once dotted with chains, particularly along York and Padonia roads, has become home to spinoffs of city stalwarts. In other words, trend alert: Kooper’s, Ryleigh’s Oyster, and now Mother’s Grille, have all booked it to the ’burbs.

Mother’s North Grille (2450 Broad Ave., Timonium, 443-991-5256), which opened in a former Applebee’s space in March, is counting on customers who, says co-owner Dave Rather, frequented the original Federal Hill bar in their 20s and are now (gulp) all grown up—with kids in tow—and eager to flock to a familiar spot in the suburbs.

Though there’s no Purple Patio or Big Buck Hunter video console, the new location—with red-and-black accents, TVs, and a Cajun-inspired menu—is still reminiscent of the South Charles Street original. Regulars will recognize signature dishes, like the aptly named, deep-fried Heart Attack burger (stuffed with cheese and battered in beer), smoky chipotle mac and cheese, and an ample wing selection. (We recommend the Sriracha barbecue wings, which had a fiery chili and garlic kick.)

The bar’s drink options cater to the craft-inclined, a far cry from Mother’s original reputation as a place to down cheap light beers. With 20 taps and 60 bottles full of selections from Union Craft, Monument City, and Flying Dog, the Timonium location is more sophisticated than its city counterpart.

There’s also an extensive bourbon list (with flight options) and a bourbon night every Wednesday. Mother’s trademark crushes are still a highlight. We tried the Tropical Crush, inspired by Rather’s brother (also co-owner and chef) Adam, who lived in the Virgin Islands. The cocktail—a mix of rum, coconut cream, pineapple and orange juices, grenadine, fruit, and crushed ice in a pint glass—transported us to the white beaches of the Caribbean.

Though Mother’s North is experiencing some growing pains (the design still closely resembles its former occupant), the newest incarnation of the Federal Hill stalwart reminds us that age is just a number.

bi-annual pajama brunch. Come in your PJs—onesies highly encouraged—and get
half off your entire check, including some breakfast booze. With bacon, eggs

Feb. 12-14: Max’s Taphouse Belgian Beer Weekend

Max’s
Taphouse, 737 S. Broadway. 11 a.m.-2 a.m. Free. 410-675-6297. maxs.com.

Our best advice to you is: Arrive early. Because as soon as Max’s opens
its doors tomorrow, lines will wrap down the street for the bonanza that is the
annual Belgian Beer Fest. Now in its 12th year, the corner bar will once again
teem with local beer lovers for an A-Game gathering of rare and virtually
impossible-to-find bottles from across the Atlantic. They’ll be tapping some
100-plus drafts, carrying more than 250 bottles, and, best of all, there will
be a full Belgian-inspired food menu, so expect waffles, frites, and brats to
accompany your bier.

SEE

Feb. 13: Gilded Lily Burlesque’s Tassels & Champagne

Creative Alliance, 3134 Eastern Ave. 7
& 10 p.m. $20-550. 410-276-1651. creativealliance.org.

Get in the mood
this weekend with the bawdy belles of Baltimore’s Gilded Lily Burlesque. This
year during their annual Valentine’s celebration, the titillating troupe
transports you to the red-hot rhythm-and-blues clubs of 1940s Chicago. That iconic
era will inspire the costumes, sets, and music of the evening. Think Muddy
Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Willie Dixon, Slim Harpo, Buddy Guy, Bo Diddley—to name a
few. So wear your best FDR-era garb, indulge in some bubbly, and let loose to
the moves of these hometown starlets with the rock-and-rolling sounds of Jonny
Grave and the Tombstones.

HEAR

Feb. 13: Valentine’s Day Dance Party: A Moveable Feast Benefit

Ottobar, 2549 N. Howard St. 8 p.m.-1 a.m. $10. 410-662-0069. theottobar.com.

For the third
year, spend your Valentine’s Eve at the Ottobar to benefit the great cause that
is Moveable Feast. Local musicians like electronic artist Dan Deacon, DJ James Nasty, futuristic R&B duo
Chiffon, and many more will show their support for the local effort to put
healthy food on the table for people in Maryland with AIDS, cancer, and other
life-threatening illnesses, already difficult in a city where 1 in 4 residents
lives in a food desert. Beyond that, it’s a perfect excuse to warm up on a
frigidly cold winter weekend.

Feb. 12-14: Anti-Valentine’s Day

Mobtown’s Anti-Valentine’s Day Extravaganza: Mobtown Ballroom, 861 Washington Blvd. 8 p.m. Free. facebook.com. The Bitter Heart Club: Ware House 518, 518 N. Charles St. 9 p.m.-12 a.m. Free. 443-869-3381. drinkablegenius.com. Cupid is Stupid: Banditos Bar & Kitchen, 1118 S. Charles St. 12 p.m. Free. 443-835-1517. banditosbk.com. Galentine’s Day Dance Party: Sticky Rice, 1634 Aliceanna St. 10:30 p.m. Free. 443-682-8243. facebook.com. Galentine’s on Valentines: Church & Company, 3647 Falls Rd. 7 p.m. $7. 410-493-0441. churchandco.org.

Whether you hate Hallmark holidays, are a sentiment sourpuss, or find yourself single and ready to mingle, there are plenty of ways to buck the te amo trend this Valentine’s weekend. At Mobtown Ballroom, skip the packed bars and restaurants of Baltimore and instead bring a date or ride solo for a night of drinks and dancing in Pigtown. At the Bitter Heart Club, listen to angsty music like Alanis Morrisette and Joy Division, crush cocktails made with Charm City Meadworks, D.C.’s True Syrups, and try tiki-inspired concoctions like the “Tinder Special.” At Cupid is Stupid, drown your sorrows or imbibe with besties as the Fed Hill hangout will feature $5 bombs, tequila, beer, and discounted carafes of sangria and wine. At the Galentine’s Day Dance Party, gather your gals for all-night drink specials and music, while at Galentine’s on Valentine’s, you can head bang to all-female rock bands as they perform their indie dream-pop or dark punk sounds.

Known for its upscale pub grub, daily drink deals, and frequent Purple Patio parties, Mother’s Grille has been a staple in the Federal Hill bar scene for years, and now the spot is expanding to more family-inclusive digs in the ‘burbs.

Mother’s recently announced that it will be opening its third location (its second debuted in Anne Arundel County in 2012) in the former Applebee’s space off Padonia Road in Timonium this winter.

Husband-and-wife owners Dave and Kelly Rather say that the expansion into the county has been in the works for more than a year, and note that the Timonium spot appealed to them because of its ample parking and location along a busy thoroughfare.

“We noticed the need for places where people can take their kids and get fresh food,” Kelly says. “We want it to be similar to the Arnold location, which works really well in a county atmosphere. It’s not going to be as bar-based, but more restaurant-based.”

The 6,000-square-foot space will seat 195 and highlight Mother’s signature dark wood aesthetic. The rehab will produce a completely renovated interior, boasting open ceilings, reclaimed wood accents, revamped wood floors, and a 65-seat bar complete with 20 taps.

Although the restaurant’s interior design and menu full of burgers and sandwiches will carry over into the new space, Dave says that Mother’s Purple Patio will remain unique to the Federal Hill flagship because of its close proximity to M&T Bank Stadium.

“We take a lot of pride in being a Ravens headquarters,” he says. “The new space will still be a great spot to watch football in the county, and it will definitely have a similar energy.”

The news of the expansion comes at a time where many downtown bars, including Ryleigh’s Oyster and Nacho Mama’s, have orchestrated spinoffs in the suburbs. In fact, Kelly mentions that it was the couple’s Federal Hill neighbors at Ryleigh’s (who happen to operate their Timonium location just across the street) who initially gave them a heads-up about the vacant space.

“We have customers who were regulars in Federal Hill when they were 25, and now they’re 35 and living in the county with families,” Kelly says. “It’s interesting to see how our brand transcends with city transplants.”

Mother’s is on track for a late February opening in Timonium, but the owners aren’t stopping there. Although specific details have not yet been disclosed, Dave says that a fourth location is slated to join the dining scene in Howard County in 2017.

“We’re excited to get reacquainted with old customers and give them a place to hang out closer to home,” he says.

Hard to believe, but spring is right around the corner, and a new fleet of restaurants are getting ready to breathe new life into Baltimore. Here’s the current buzz, including some in-the-works projects and a few changes being made to existing eateries.

COMING SOON:

Chipotle Mexican Grill: If you thought the out-the-door lines at Shake Shack were outrageous, just wait until this popular chain opens its second location in the Inner Harbor within the next few weeks. Slated for an early April opening, Chipotle will be bringing its famous burritos, bowls, and salads piled high with D-I-Y toppings to the former California Tortilla space at 300 W. Pratt St. on the Inner Harbor. 300 W. Pratt St., 410-605-0991.

La Tolteca: Speaking of Mexican food, you may have heard this restaurant’s name before—as it already has a few locations open in Bel Air, Cockeysville, and Aberdeen—but be on the lookout for the newest La Tolteca space opening in Canton later this month. Taking over the old home of The Horse With No Name on Boston St., this authentic south-of-the-border spot will offer up favorites like quesadillas, tacos, and fajitas, while also serving salads, seafood, and, of course, margaritas. 2324 Boston St., 410-276-2173.

Tilted Kilt Pub & Eatery: Known for its sports bar vibe and servers dressed in sexy plaid kilts, this nationwide chain plans to open 20 new locations scattered throughout Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia by 2016. In fact, construction is already in the works for new Tilted Kilt restaurants in Wheaton and Annapolis slated to open by the end of this year. Each space highlights traditional Celtic décor. Offered eats include pub grub like Irish nachos, fish and chips, and burger options.

CH-CH-CHANGES:

Mother’s Grille: This longtime Federal Hill favorite, known for its Purple Patio and frequent happy hour deals, recently announced that it’s undergoing a huge remodel in the coming weeks. Changes to the 17-year-old space will include new windows, removing the dining room stairwell, a new 20-beer tap system, updated bar furniture, and a revamped menu with gourmet sandwiches and new seafood options. Mother’s will be closed on Tuesdays, and on Wednesdays for lunch, for the next seven weeks as construction continues. 1113 S. Charles St., 410-244-8686.

Vito Ristorante Italiano: Vito’s Cafe in Cockeysville has recently changed its name to something a little fancier, but its Northern Italian identity remains the same with authentic dishes like clams casino, veal marsala, and fettuccine Bolognese. The former BYOB spot has also recently added beer and wine to its menu after being granted liquor license approval last summer. 10249 York Road, Cockeysville, 410-666-3100.

Waterfront Kitchen: This Fells Point restaurant, known for its breathtaking harbor-side views, recently appointed David Hynes as its new executive chef. A Brooklyn native with experience cooking at upscale restaurants all over the New York City, Hynes is committed to maintaining Waterfront’s support of local urban agriculture, while also putting his own unique spin on the restaurant’s traditional dishes. 1417 Thames St., 410-681-5310

Wild’s Seafood: Back in September, members of the Jessup community were shocked to learn that longtime fresh fish purveyor Frank’s Seafood had closed. The space of the former Howard County mainstay has recently been taken over by New York-based Wild’s Seafood. The market celebrated its grand opening late last month, and now offers a wide variety of fish, crabs, and other products from well-known wholesale seafood retailers. 7901 Oceano Ave., Jessup, 410-799-5960.

SHUT:

The Mallow Bar: The food court-style Baltimore Marketplace in Horseshoe Casino saw its first closure last month, when this coffee and dessert cafe announced that it was closing up shop. Although The Mallow Bar’s chocolate-covered marshmallow treats didn’t mix well with casino’s clientele, the company’s Rosedale location is still going strong, and you can find a number of its signature products at various coffee shops and farmers markets around town. No word yet on what will become of the former Mallow Bar space, which neighbors Lenny’s Delicatessen, Tarks at the Shoe, and Heavy Seas Burgers in the casino’s casual dining area.

You don’t have to be at Pimlico racetrack to enjoy this year’s horse race when so many bars and restaurants are offering Preakness specials. Whether you’re looking for an elegant affair or a casual hangout spot, there’s somewhere in Baltimore for you to celebrate.

The Mt. Washington Tavern is currently offering its own spin on a Black-Eyed Susan for this year’s Preakness and, while supplies last, you can even keep the commemorative glass. The first order is $10, with $7 refills on Tavern Susans. America’s Best Racing is hosting a free pre-Preakness party at the tavern on Wednesday, May 14, with a chance to meet the jockeys and win Preakness tickets. The party begins at 7 p.m., and the first 50 guests to RSVP via Yelp get a free drink ticket.

Stay caffeinated for the race with coffee from Chesapeake Bay Roasting Company. Based in Crofton, the company has been named the official coffee of the Preakness, and you can get a cup at multiple Preakness events. The CBRC van has also been driving all over Maryland, giving away tickets to the race. Keep up with their Preakness activities on Facebook.

Claddagh Pub and Mother’s Grille are both offering the same Preakness package—for $109, guests get an infield general admission ticket, transportation to and from the race, and access to the pregame brunch party at either location. Both brunches will be serving up $3 Bud Light drafts and $12 pitchers of mimosas and Bloody Marys. Tickets can be purchased online.

Mad River Bar & Grille is offering a Preakness package for $100 that includes a free breakfast buffet, transportation to Pimlico, and a ticket to the Infield Mug Club. The package also includes an open bar for the hour before and after Preakness. Reservations can be made by calling 410-727-2333.

If you love the dressing up for the race, you won’t want to miss the after-party. Baltimore chef Spike Gjerde is hosting a Preakness cookout, “The Winner’s Wind-Down,” in Belvedere Square at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 17. Flying Dog beer, whiskey, and Maryland cocktails will be served, along with coffee and dessert. Tickets are $100 for individuals or $300 for a group of four. The money will partially benefit the Oyster Recovery Partnership, which is devoted to helping return healthy oysters to the Chesapeake Bay. Preakness attire and hats are strongly encouraged. Tickets can be purchased online.
