Exhibitions. Walking through the halls of The Walters Art Museum in Mount Vernon, art lovers can expect to come across a vast range of antiquities—ancient Roman sarcophagi, Buddhist sculptures, and meticulously preserved Qur’ans—altogether spanning some seven millennia and several continents. But for one weekend this month, a new pop-up exhibition will feature something more local and contemporary—modern-day works, created right here in Baltimore.

It is a capstone project of sorts, following an eight-week skill-sharing program with esteemed photographer and Baltimore native SHAN Wallace, pictured above, whose work has been published in Vogue, Vanity Fair, and The Washington Post, plus this magazine. It is officially the season of Elizabeth Talford Scott. Twenty-five years ago, the Maryland Institute College of Art presented a landmark retrospective on the mixed-media fiber artist and her narrative tapestries. Now, those efforts are being revived by present-day MICA professor Deyane Moses, who is helping to spread the word of Scott’s life and legacy even farther.

Lewis Museum for Black Woman Genius, centered around Scott’s imaginative oeuvre and her inspirational influence. Up through September 30, the exhibit explores themes of ancestry, tradition, and healing, with additional works by contemporary Black women artists of the same medium, such as up-and-coming sculptor Murjoni Merriweather and the feature artist’s own daughter, Joyce J.
This year’s event will take place at Enoch Pratt’s Central Library, inside the building’s recently refurbished Central Hall. Proceeds raised from tickets, which will go on sale beginning Jan. 11, will promote local literacy programs for kids and teenagers.

On a Friday evening in Mt. Vernon, the upbeat sounds of Otis Redding, Stevie Wonder, and Diana Ross bounce between the walls of 1 East Franklin Street as guests sip glasses of tart lemonade, and novelty pool floats in myriad designs and colors—a popsicle, a diamond ring, a camera, a hot air balloon, and unicorns with multicolored tresses—float above the entrance.

To the right, a lush, green velvet couch waits against a yellow wall, and to the left, a hoisted floor-length mirror sits precisely photo ready. After all, the Lemonade Selfie Museum’s entryway was designed with a purpose. Opened to the public since February, it joins a growing trend of local spaces that were designed to be posted on Instagram, featuring various rooms created for parties, field trips, pop-ups, and, you guessed it—selfies—which can be reserved by the hour on Wednesdays through Sundays.

At a lavishly pink table, we catch up with the museum’s founding owner, Michelle, who is using a pseudonym to protect her privacy, about the inspiration behind the first venue of its kind in Baltimore.

What led you to open a museum?
I went to California and they have some selfie museums that are similar to this one. I remember thinking, “We don’t have anything like that in Baltimore.” I really wanted our museum to have a theme and speak to something more than just taking a picture, so I did a lot of research and went to other museums to make sure that ours was [up to the same standards]. At the Museum of Ice Cream in California, the coolest part about it was the props. We wanted to make sure that we had props that people could actually pick up and utilize. We make sure we have staff to help take pictures. Sometimes guests will stand in our windows and we’ll go outside to take pictures for them. Creativity is really what I want.

How would you describe the Lemonade Selfie Museum’s theme?
The idea was for the Lemonade Selfie Museum to be a museum of affirmations. I had experiences with domestic violence, and putting little sticky notes with affirmations on them in my bathroom, on the window, or my mirror, was always just a way to remind myself that I had everything I needed to move on. I didn’t want to do this for the money. I created this place to be a way to remind myself that I’m always going to have good vibes, I didn’t stop, and I’m still going to be great. And every person who walks in here, they’re going to be great too!

It reminds us of Beyonce’s Lemonade album.
Exactly! She created that album as a self-proclamation, like, “I am Beyonce. Whatever I went through, I made lemons into lemonade.” We wanted to embody the effects that album had and bring them into one space. We have a sign that says, “This Must Be the Place,” meaning any place you are is “the place.” Our mirror in the entryway says “G.O.A.T.,” because we want everybody to feel like they’re the “Greatest of All Time.”

What went into designing every room?
I wanted each room to be its own and everything to be friendly and family oriented. That’s why you see stuff that looks like it’s for kids, but adults can use it too, like the seesaw. We also have a rain installation. Why not have our rain be colorful? And why not have a clear umbrella so we can see how pretty it is? We reached out to different artists in the area; one of them hand-painted our Burberry wall.

How do you decide what music to play?
We always try to make sure our music is PG-13, but we try to mix it up. When people come in with big crowds, we let them choose their own music. The museum is about creativity, and music is a form of art as well.

What’s the most rewarding part of this experience?
Being able to use this platform to reach out to other women. Besides coming in here to feel good, I want them to be able to utilize the space for their own businesses as well. We’ve had people come and ask to use our backdrop for their podcast. We want them to be able to use this space for pop-up [vending.] Why not make it a one-stop shop? A lot of people can’t afford [their own] brick-and-mortar.

What’s next for the museum?
I’m hoping to create an upstairs, too. I definitely see us coming up with multiple locations. I’ve been playing with the idea of music. Maybe recreating old music videos from back in the day, like Missy Elliot’s videos, or recreating the scene of the SZA album cover with the TVs.

Though its future location hangs in the balance, we can definitively say that, for now, the Preakness Stakes are a Baltimore tradition. And local bars, restaurants, and party professionals are celebrating the Charm City spectacle in characteristic style.

From cocktail specials to bus parties and everything in between, here are the best ways to celebrate the middle jewel of the Triple Crown.

Support thoroughbred care at Mt. Washington Tavern.
For the sixth year in a row, America’s Best Racing will hold a pre-Preakness party at Mt. Washington Tavern. On Wednesday, May 15, guests can enjoy Triple Crown-themed cocktails, a buffet of bar snacks, and a silent auction all to benefit the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, which awards grants to aftercare organizations around the country.

Sip on a slushie at Wet City.
Our favorite personified frozen drink machine is getting in the Preakness spirit this year at Wet City in Mt. Vernon. Decked out in an eyepatch, Blinky will be churning out frozen Black-Eyed Susan cocktails with rum, vodka, pineapple juice, orange juice, and coconut. The safest bet of the day? You’ll be wearing the eyepatch after a few of these.

Go downtown for al fresco happy hours.
All week long, Baltimore Office of Promotion & the Arts will be hosting events to celebrate the lead up to Preakness. There are events for kids, lunchtime markets, and even a fireworks show, but we’re mostly excited for their Monday-Thursday happy hours featuring vendors like Clavel, Charm City Pops, and Connie’s Chicken and Waffles.

Start the pregame party bright and early.
Get into the true infield spirit with tailgate pros Bmore Around Town, which will be hosting pregame parties at Mother’s and Southern Provisions starting at 8 a.m. on Preakness day. Tickets get you an unlimited brunch menu, bus transportation to Pimlico, a commemorative beer mug, and a general admission ticket to the infield. Just remember: pace yourself.

Imbibe a beautiful cocktail at The Elephant.
Now that The Elephant is officially staying open on North Charles Street, celebrate by trying their elegant cocktail Grandma Suzie. This horse-race-inspired drink is made with Hendrick’s gin, Grand Marnier, herbal liqueur, tonic, seasonal fruit, and edible flowers. With its elaborate garnish, it’s kind of like the Preakness hat of cocktails.

Go traditional with a Black-Eyed Susan.
As much as we love creative twists on classics, sometimes you really just want the original. Stop into the Grille at Harryman House for a no-fuss, Black-Eyed Susan made with Bare Knuckle bourbon, vodka, peach schnapps, orange juice, and sour mix served over crushed ice. It’s the official drink of Preakness for a reason.

Aug. 4: Fort McHenry Crab Feast

Fort McHenry National Monument, 2400 E. Fort Ave. 4-8 p.m. $45-725.

There’s still a few weeks of crab season left, and that’s something worth celebrating. Spend Saturday evening at the historic Fort McHenry for this fifth annual crab feast, featuring tons of Maryland blues as well as backyard barbeque fare like pulled pork, corn on the cob, homemade potato chips, and refreshing summer salads. Wash down the Old Bay-encrusted crustaceans with libations from Atlantic Wines and Heavy Seas Brewing Company, and groove along to live music by the Eastport Oyster Boys, a group of Chesapeake Bay troubadours. Whether you’re an out-of-towner or a born-and-bred Baltimorean, get a taste of the city’s most authentic flavors at this outdoor extravaganza.

Aug. 3-4: Baltimore Cocktail Week

Locations, times, and prices vary.

In its fourth year, Baltimore Cocktail Week is swapping competition for collaboration with its “Better Together” theme, and nothing brings people together like a round of drinks. The initiative’s five participating bars—Bartender’s Pub, Holy Frijoles, Sticky Rice, The Regal Beagle, and The Red Star in Charles Village—will offer signature cocktails, each with a different liquor as the base. With a focus on wellness, sustainability, and inclusivity, one of the summer’s booziest weeks will be hard to pass up.

Creative Alliance, 3134 Eastern Ave. 4:30-8 p.m. Free.

Some might call it puppy love, but we call it the cutest event of the summer. Grab your four-legged friends and head to this outdoor block party for an evening of doggie pool parties, pet-and-owner photoshoots, a canine costume contest, and free tennis balls and treats for both the dogs and their owners. Spend some quality time with your favorite pup, get involved with local pet charities, or even adopt a new best friend at this family-friendly event.

Grab your slouchiest jean jacket, tie a flannel around your waist, and head to Station North to relive the ’90s at this all-night dance party. Maryland b-boy DJ FLEG will join Baltimore-based DJ and producer Loc Spice to combine the decade’s best tunes with modern electronic beats for a nostalgic night full of moves like the running man, the sprinkler, and maybe even the electric slide. If you can’t make it this weekend, your ’90s-kid spirit won’t go to waste—Motor House will hold dance parties dedicated to this iconic era on the first Friday of the month through December.

The gala raises funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of Maryland and for the guild itself, while promoting local bars and eateries.

“We have 17 Baltimore bars attending, all featuring their own version of a rye cocktail,” said BBG president Brendan Dorr.

Judges from New York, Chicago, D.C. (and Baltimore’s
senior editor Jess Blumberg Mayhugh) will be selecting their favorite
concoction made with either Bulleit Rye or George Dickel Rye. The
creator of the winning cocktail will win a trip to nightlife Mecca New
Orleans.

Guests can get in on the action, too, by casting votes
for the winner of the People’s Choice Award for best cocktail and best
restaurant. There will also be live music, a silent auction, and select
wines, as well as beer from Union Craft Brewery.

Last
year, Dorr said, the event had more than 200 guests and raised about
$3,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. “This year, we’re hoping to
break $4,000,” he said.

Drink away your Snowpocalypse troubles this weekend at the 10th annual Belgian Beer Festival at Max’s Taphouse.
Starting today at 11 a.m. and going Monday, Max’s will be showcasing
200 different Belgian drafts and nearly 300 bottles of imported
specialty beers, some of which will be making their U.S. debut.

Prices
for the rare beers will range from $3.50-12 for drafts and in sample
size and some of the beers featured are from breweries such as Bastogne,
Lupus, Verzet, Fantome, Cantillon, De Dolle, and Alvinee—all located in
Belgium

Another exciting element this year is
a bit more local, as Max’s will offer homemade beers and collaborations
with local breweries. Today, Max’s will release their beer called 10 (a
collaboration with Maryland-based Burley Oak and Dawson Liquors);
Tomorrow, Max’s and Stillwater Artisanal Ales
release their beer called Decade (a crimson farmhouse ale); Sunday,
Max’s will feature special kegs from Oxbow Brewery (Maine) and Perennial
Ales (Missouri); and on Monday, the bar will feature its collaboration
with The Brewer’s Art called 72 Hour Sour.

For
the second year in a row, on Monday the bar will focus on sour beers,
which are becoming increasingly popular with clientele—especially
women—according to Max’s cellarman and general manager Casey Hard. In
general, the staff at Max’s gets inundated with questions about these
rare brews all year round.

“It is amazing how many requests we get
for our unique Belgian beers,” Hard said in a press
release. “Unfortunately, we are unable to inventory these beers all year
long because the Belgian breweries only brew a small amount. We are
very fortunate to get what we receive.”

Additionally, to wash down all of the delicious beer, customers can indulge in Belgian chocolates and frites on Max’s menu.

The folks at Alexander’s Tavern

Both Woody’s Rum Bar & Grill and Slàinte Irish Pub

A big trend I’ve been noticing on cocktails menus has been the revival of the punch bowl. No longer reserved for school dances or holiday parties, the punch bowl is making a comeback at local bars and restaurants.

B&O American Brasserie has the Chesapeake Punch (Maker’s Mark, Appleton rum, Cointreau, orange, lime, simple syrup, and Angostura bitters) and the Gangland Courage (Hennessy VS, Batavia Arrack, apricot cordial, ginger syrup, lemon, and sparkling brut).

Additionally, Hersh’s Pizza & Drinks (one of our “Best Bars”) introduced rotating punches to their menu. Right now, bar manager Jamaal Green is offering the “Brandy and Bubbly” punch, which would make for a perfect Super Bowl party drink. Or, as Green says, “I want everyone to drink themselves into oblivion with this!” Here’s the recipe:

19 oz. brandy (Vecchia Romagna)
11.5 oz. fresh-squeezed orange juice, house-made grenadine, and simple syrup…equal parts
7.6 oz. of squeezed lemon juice
750 ml of prosecco or cava
.5 liter of club soda
Garnish with two lemons sliced into wheels, one orange into half wheels. Can serve 30 per four-ounce serving. Add two egg-shaped ice blocks or one large.

On Wednesday, I, along with other members of the media and selected guests, attended the unveiling of The 13th Floor, which is now open to the public after undergoing six months of renovations. The updates, which started in April, were intended to modernize the swanky space in The Belvedere.

As soon as the elevator doors opened up, the change was undeniable. There were stained-glass motifs, steel beams, and fuchsia and gold accents—giving the place an upscale, industrial feel.

The most prominent change was the bar, which was relocated from the center of the room to the front, where the dance floor used to be. The bar is also now a long, white marble L-shape, instead of its rectangular predecessor. The evening featured some of The 13th Floor’s new signature cocktails, including the Hemingway Daquiri, a delicious concoction of rum, maraschino liqueur, and grapefruit juice.

Curiously, they didn’t install beer taps, but instead featured bottled beers like Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA, Franziskaner Hefe-Weisse, Stone Oaked Arrogant Bastard Ale, Evolution Lucky 7, and Flying Dog Atlantic Lager. The local nods were a very nice touch. The menu also features nearly 40 wine selections.

In general, the new space has a much more sophisticated feel (no more animal-print carpet, though some booths did have a snake-skin pattern) and, it seems, the owners are trying to attract a more upscale clientele. One thing hasn’t changed, though: The skyline views are just as stunning.

The 3rd annual Baltimore Beer Week begins today! The name itself is sort of deceptive, as the “week” will actually be 11 days of beer-themed events at bars and restaurants in the Baltimore area from today until October 16.

Things get started today at noon with a “Star-Spangled Banner” parade from Fort McHenry eventually weaving its way to Rams Head Live in Power Plant. From there, the “Opening Tap Celebration,” at Rams Head from 6-9 p.m., will officially kick off the myriad of events for the next week-and-a-half.

To celebrate Baltimore Beer Week, I actually took a trip to Flying Dog Brewery in Frederick, where I toured the brewery and learned more about its involvement in Beer Week events. You can view the video here. Flying Dog is proving that, while Beer Week is mostly fun, it’s also a chance to give back. The brewery is partnering with Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake and, tomorrow, Flying Dog staff will participate in a Habitat Build in McElderry Park. They’ll end the day with a fundraiser and thank-you event at Langermann’s.

That is simply one example of the countless events going on during Baltimore Beer Week. For full listings, see their website. Cheers!

On Wednesday night I had the pleasure of attending an event called Bottle Battle at B&O American Brasserie. The concept of the event was really creative and fun: we were served dishes created by B&O chef Thomas Dunklin and, with each dish, we were served a corresponding cocktail (created by B&O’s Brendan Dorr) and a wine (selected by Kimpton Hotels‘ Emily Wines—yes, that is her real last name). It was up to us, as the attendees, to vote for which drink paired best with each dish.

While the concept is simple enough, the actual decision-making wasn’t so much, as all the drinks paired ridiculously well with the dishes. Our first course was a Maryland rockfish, pictured, served with bacalao, spring onion, and tomato jam. Wines selected an Etude pinot gris and Dorr made a cilantro gin fizz (Plymouth gin, cilantro syrup, lime, orange flower water, soda, and egg white). The pinot was a perfect pairing with the rockfish, accentuating the dish’s flavor. The cocktail was also a refreshing complement, but seemed to mask the food’s flavor altogether.

The second dish was a little more experimental (at least for me): cured rabbit, tasso loin, mustard rillete, liver mousse, and spicy head cheese. While I wasn’t a huge fan of everything on my plate—I don’t think my palette is refined enough—I did appreciate the pairings of Route 99 pinot noir and Dorr’s agave apricot drink (Cazadores Reposado tequila, Velvet Falernum, Domaine Canton, apricot syrup, lemon juice, and orange bitters). Here, I chose the cocktail. While the zesty pinot noir went well with the rabbit, the spicy agave apricot complemented the rest of the flavors, especially the mustard.

For our third and final course, we were served a rack of lamb, braised lamb belly, split pea stew, and goat cheese gnocchi. Now, I am no food expert (I leave that to Suzanne), but this was an amazing dish. The lamb was cooked perfectly (and barely) and the goat cheese gnocchi were flawless melt-in-your-mouth pillows.

To accompany this amazing dish was a Kunin “Pape Star,” an earthy red, and a rye cardizian cocktail (Rittenhouse rye, Byass Solera sherry, lillet, Peychauds bitters, and Fee Bros. orange bitters). This one was a bit of a draw for me. Lamb goes so classically well with red wine and whiskey. The Kunin wine had smoky, peppery notes, which worked extremely well with the dish. The cocktail had a bold, musty flavor with a bit of sweetness that stood up well against the lamb.

In the end, the wine won over the cocktails by a narrow margin. The outcome was to be expected, as wine has always been an ideal match for food. But Dorr showed that cocktails shouldn’t be counted out either. The excellent execution aside, it struck me that the entire format is a great idea for an event—whether it be a casual party or a charity gala. Of course the most difficult part would be wrangling up experts, like those on-hand at the B&O.

Over at Suzanne’s In Good Taste blog, she’s already listed a bunch of food-centric events going on tomorrow night. And, below, I’ve spelled out some of the standout nightlife events happening. So, see, we’ve made it easy for anyone to find the right New Year’s event.

Downtown Countdown: Lindy Promotions and Mother’s are again putting on the Downtown Countdown at the Hyatt Regency. This year, the theme is “Roots, Rock, Rap, and Reggae,” with live performances from the Charm City Devils, Can’t Hang, and Tone Loc (yes, the guy from Ace Ventura). There’s also a five-hour open bar, dinner buffets, comedy form 98 Rock’s Mickey Cucchiella, and music from DJ Kopec. Tickets: $119, VIP: $164 (and going up).

New Year’s Eve at Ottobar: The Ottobar is taking its two biggest dance parties and combining them on New Year’s Eve. For the first half of the night (8 p.m.-midnight), DJ Craig Boarman spins a mix of Madonna, Prince, Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, and Britney Spears. For the second half (midnight-4 a.m.), DJs Simon Phoenix and Cullen Stalin spin a TaxLo mix of indie, elecro, hip-hop, and club music. Buffet food and no cover after 1 a.m. Tickets: $10.

New Year’s Eve Spectacular at Ram’s Head Live: After a whirlwind tour to promote their new album, southern rockers J. Roddy Walston and the Business are headlining this year’s show at Rams Head Live, with openers Beard, Mickey Free, and Alto Verde. The show is $20 with a complimentary Fordham Beer Tasting at midnight.

The 8×10 Club: Electronic three-piece Damn Right! (who I wrote about playing Artscape) is headlining the 8×10’s New Year’s show. Also on stage is Shook with their brand of soulful pop, and Marmoset & Nuemann. Champagne toast at midnight. Tickets: $23 at the door.

One of the best parts? The MillerCoors brewing company is giving $25,000 to the Maryland Transit Administration to provide free rides on bus routes, light rail, and the Metro for six hours between 8 p.m. tomorrow night until 2 a.m. New Year’s Day.
