If you haven’t been to Harbor Point recently, there’s a lot to check out this spring and summer! The one-of-a-kind waterfront neighborhood continues to grow, with a focus on small, local, and startup businesses. Whether you want to sip a cocktail with your toes in the sand, break a sweat in a yoga or spin class, or sink your teeth into a freshly baked bagel or mouth-watering kebab, Harbor Point’s newest neighbors have got what you want.

Sandlot
Baltimore’s beach is back! The popular waterfront beach bar and recreation yard returns with a new location, new offerings, and new leadership. Opening Memorial Day weekend, Sandlot will be operated by Bar Movement, a mobile bar/entertainment concept that will feature a fun and creative new drink menu, plus a variety of food trucks and guest-chef appearances throughout the summer. Stop by and enjoy one of the best sunset views of downtown Baltimore.

Wills Park
A hidden gem at Harbor Point, Wills Park opened in the middle of the pandemic and has quickly become a favorite of area residents. Tucked between Thames Street Wharf and Wills Wharf directly across from the Domino Sugar plant, the intimate park overlooking the harbor boasts a staggered staircase and grassy slope that’s perfect for sitting and watching the boats go by.

Breathing Dragon Yoga
The hottest new spot in Harbor Point, Breathing Dragon specializes in hot yoga, offering a variety of yoga styles and High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) classes suitable for all levels, with several membership and class-package options. Whether you go for hot vinyasa power flow yoga, warm yin/yang yoga, or hot HIIT classes, you’re sure to get your sweat on in this spacious studio, which includes changing rooms with showers and private lockers.

Resistance Cycle
Ready, set, spin! This brand-new spin cycle studio opens in June on the ground floor of the Exelon Building facing Harbor Point’s Central Plaza, and will feature 50 bikes, showers, and locker rooms. Owner Kelly Berger, a well-known spin instructor in Baltimore, will offer classes to all skill levels from beginner to seasoned spinner. Flexible memberships allow clients to buy class packages or stop in for a single ride.

Greg’s Bagels
Longtime local favorite Greg’s Bagels is making the move to Harbor Point! The new location at Thames Street Wharf will feature a cashless payment system and a bagel-rolling machine. Don’t worry, though — despite some modern touches, customers can expect the same freshly made bagels from the recipe developed by original owner Greg Novik that have made this beloved bagel shop a staple of the Baltimore food scene for more than 30 years.

Döner Brös
It was love at first bite when two friends tasted a kebab at Oktoberfest in Germany in 2015. They came home to Baltimore and Döner Brös was born. Starting as food truck and growing to multiple brick-and-mortar locations, this locally owned and operated eatery serves up kebabs, dürüms, rice bowls, salads, and fries. Döner Brös’ new Harbor Point location serves beer and wine in an open-concept, German beer hall-style setting and features an expanded, shareable menu packed with delicious new items.

There’s always something going on at Harbor Point.
Ice Queens. 1648 E Fort Ave. 4-9 p.m.

Earlier this week, word began to spread that this Locust Point snowball spot has recently been the victim of acts of racially charged hate and vandalism that included the destruction of its outdoor signage and menu board. In true Charm City fashion, the South Baltimore community has come out in droves to support owners Dasia Kabia and Monique Burke as they try to recover from the damage done to their shop. Lines have been wrapped around the block all week, and, to further back the business, neighbors have organized this Saturday-afternoon block party at Ice Queens that will act as a fundraiser to help replace all of the outdoor signage. So gather up your friends and family and head to the Fort Avenue fixture to beat the heat with a classic egg custard with marshmallow, skylite, or your favorite flavor combination while showing your support and taking a stand.

Sandlot. 1000 Wills St. 3-8 p.m. $35.

This weekend, Sandlot’s waterfront oasis is transforming into a paint studio. Colours Stroke will be popping up at the Harbor Point waterfront to throw the ultimate sip-and-paint party. While basking in the sun, you and your friends can get to work creating your own masterpieces to put on display once you return home. There will be two two-hour sessions, and plenty of beverages, just don’t forget to grab your ticket ahead of time.

The Baltimore Architecture Foundation. Zoom. 1-1:30 p.m. Free.

The Baltimore Architecture Foundation’s latest installment of Virtual Histories is taking you all the way back to 1911 to discuss the origins and architecture of Baltimore’s first rec center. The birth of the Roosevelt Recreation Center bears an unlikely story, and its design was like no other at the time. Jackson Gilman-Forlini, a historic preservation officer for the city’s Department of General Services, will be presenting the discussion and explaining how suffragists had a unique role in its historical creation.

Hop in the car and take a trip to one of Maryland’s most beautiful wineries to spread out while enjoying live music, a glass of local vino, and some food truck fare. The performance lineup, which features a different musician on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, offers everything from roots and rock covers to country and soul songs. On deck this weekend is rock and soul musician Julia A. Kasdorf on Friday night, guitarist Sulaiman Rahman on Saturday afternoon, and singer-songwriter Domenic Cicala on Sunday afternoon.

One thing Benevolent Bubbles knows for sure is that bubbles and biking complement each other perfectly. Whether you’re skeptical or convinced, this weekend you’ll get the chance to see what all the hype is about. The nonprofit, whose mission is to decrease the social stigma surrounding mental illness, will be guiding a bubble cruise from Patterson Park to Federal Hill Park just in time to catch the sunset over the city skyline. No need to worry if you don’t have a bubble machine of your own. Organizers will be offering some of their own so you don’t need to miss out on the fun.

If you had “eat s’mores” or “go camping” on your summer bucket list, look no further than this overnight campout at Sandlot. Grab a tent, grill, and sleeping bag for this first-ever event that invites attendees to camp out on the Harbor Point bar’s volleyball courts and waterfront beach. Spend the evening roasting weenies and marshmallows under the stars, and then indulge in an a la carte pancake breakfast before heading back to the comfort of the indoors.

Vent Coffee Roasters, 1700 W. 41st St. 6-11 p.m. $10.

Somehow, it has already been a year since this do-good coffee roaster moved into its first brick-and-mortar space in Union Collective. This Saturday, the Vent team is celebrating with a caffeine-fueled anniversary party complete with free espresso shots, coffee cocktails, and $1 cold brews or drip cups to benefit Baltimore Ceasefire 365. To balance out the java intake, sip on beers by Union Craft Brewing, snack on cupcakes from City Seeds, and, at the end of the night, raise a glass of bubbly to another year of kick-ass coffee.

The SNF Parkway, 5 W. North Avenue. 6:30-9:30 p.m. $8-11.

We can always count on the Parkway Theatre to not only play some of the most-talked-about films and documentaries, but to also find creative ways to transform a screening into a community-wide event. This Friday’s showing of Honeyland, an award-winning environmental documentary about the last female wild beekeeper in Europe, is no exception. Before the 7 p.m. movie, try honey samples from local business Hon’s Honey and grab a honey-based drink from Charm City Meadworks and Baltimore Spirits Company.

Union Craft Brewing, 1700 W. 41st St. 1-10 p.m. $20.

It’s always a party when revered local guitarist Cris Jacobs plays at Union Craft Brewing, but this Sunday’s vendor fair and concert mash-up takes it to a whole new level. After spending a few hours browsing through locally made wares such as handmade glass pieces, vintage T-shirts, and vinyl records, pack the brewery to hear a group of singer-songwriters, including the likes of Grahame Lesh, Elliott Peck, and Nathan Graham, join Jacobs onstage for a recreation of their 1982 concert at the Baltimore Civic Center. If that’s not enough to get your attention, there will also be a liquid light show throughout the rockin’ concert.

Charm City Meadworks, 400 E. Biddle St. 12-5 p.m. Free.

Who says there’s no place for sack races and water balloon tosses in adulthood? On Saturday, Charm City Meadworks and Graft Cider will host this end-of-summer field day, featuring team activities like tug of war, dizzy bat, and egg spoon races that are sure to trudge up some (possibly embarrassing) middle school memories. In between relays, enjoy eats by From the Heart food truck, sip on a collaboration mead from the host purveyors, and get in line to attempt to sink City Council President Brandon Scott and Councilwoman Danielle McCray in the dunk tank.

A batch of new beach bars are joining the city’s open-air dining scene this summer, which means it’s the perfect time to throw on a pair of shades and head out for a sun-soaked day drink. Whether you’re into boozy slushies, rum punches, classic daiquiris, or trendy tiki cocktails, these new (and returning) seasonal spots have something to please all palates. In between visits to our coveted dockside destinations and sky-high rooftop bars, enjoy a little change of scenery at one of these outdoor hangouts.

El Tigre: Not only has the Dooby’s team graced us with Old Boy and Fat Tiger inside the new Broadway Market, but they’ve also launched El Tigre—a pan-Latin-inspired tiki bar that expands cocktail service outside onto Broadway Square. Beneath the twinkling lights on the market’s patio, beverage director Tyler DiMarco pours thoughtful creations including the cachaça-forward “Muito Bom,” a classic Planter’s Punch, and the “Viracocha”—a flagship cocktail made with Peruvian pisco, dry gin, tropical fruit juices, and cinnamon. “It embodies who we are and what our mission is,” DiMarco says of the Viracocha, which is named after the ancient Peruvian Incan god of the sun.

Standout sip: The “El Teniente,” an agave-infused riff on the classic Navy Grog that combines Ilegal Mezcal Joven, reposado tequila, aperol, passion fruit puree, baking spices, absinthe, and star anise. 1640 Aliceanna St.

Long Beach Marina: The recently renovated bar and restaurant at this full-service marina in Bowleys Quarters has all of the essentials for an island staycation. In addition to the palm trees and frequent performances by reggae and steel drum bands, the refreshed menu features summer staples like sesame ahi tuna and massive crab cakes. Pair the eats with fruity cocktails including the “Bananarama” (banana rum, peach schnapps, and pineapple juice) and the “Coconut Concussion”—a mix of coconut rum, Sprite, and muddled lime.

Standout sip: The “Mermaid Water” with Captain Morgan spiced rum, pineapple juice, lime juice, and blue curacao. 800 Chester Rd., Bowleys Quarters. 410-335-8602

Ouzo Beach: Ouzo Bay in Harbor East is expanding its footprint across Lancaster Street with this sister venue expected to open next week. Decked out with blue stone, palm trees, a wooden trellis, and tons of tropical plants, the streetside oasis is meant to resemble the courtyard of a Mediterranean-style villa. The bar team is rolling out some creative cocktails for the new concept, including a “Gin & Juice” cocktail made with Baltimore Spirits Company’s Shot Tower Gin and a frozen “Cold Fashioned.”

Raw Bar: After sitting vacant since last fall, Boathouse Canton has been brought back to life by the team behind Bond Street Social and Barcocina. As its name suggests, the waterfront social spot offers a seafood-focused menu emphasizing raw oysters, rockfish tacos, crab cakes, and lobster rolls. While taking in the harborside sites from the patio and outdoor gazebo, enjoy island-inspired cocktails like hibiscus margaritas, blackberry sangria, Sagamore whiskey lemonade, a classic Bee’s Knees, and a rum runner on tap.

Standout sip: The “Smokin Pyrat” with Pyrat rum, pineapple juice, sour mix, and agave nectar in a cinnamon-smoked glass with a brown sugar rim. 2908 Boston St. 443-708-7961

Raw & Refined: Not to be confused with its neighbor Raw Bar, this Boston Street hideaway adjacent to Swim Club recently debuted with a Caribbean- and Latin American-inspired seafood menu. (Think dishes like tuna tartare cannoli, an open-faced Cubano, and elote-inspired grilled oysters with chili lime butter and cotija.) The eatery’s outdoor patio is ideal for sipping cocktails while watching boats sail across the water at Lighthouse Point. Options include refreshing Grapefruit Crushes, the “Bull & the Berry” (Ketel One botanical cucumber, coconut-berry Red Bull, simple syrup, and fresh berries), and the “Poolside Paloma” with jalapeño-infused tequila and grapefruit.

Standout sip: A frozen strawberry daiquiri and pina colada “Pain in the Ass” topped with an additional floater of Captain Morgan black rum. 4309 Shore Drive, Sparrows Point. 443-242-6698

Union Craft Brewing, 1700 W. 41st St. 7-10 p.m. Free.

From Pride Night at Camden Yards to the last Pride Fest at Grand Central, there are countless events and parties being thrown during Pride month in celebration of the city’s vibrant LGBTQ+ community, and we couldn’t be more excited by the outpouring of support from local businesses and beyond. Start the weekend festivities at Union Craft Brewing with beats by DJ Kim Brannan, a glitter station, high-energy drag performances by local queens including Bambi Galore, and, of course, free-flowing pours of the brewery’s signature brews. Snag a limited-edition Union Pride hat and drink up because a portion of the proceeds benefit Baltimore Pride.

The Avenue in Hampden, 36th St. Sat. 11 a.m.-10 p.m., Sun. 12-6 p.m. Free.

Although it’s been a few decades since the workingwomen of Baltimore strutted through the streets wearing beehive hairdos and brightly colored house dresses, the legacy of those proud women comes alive every June during this neighborhood-wide celebration. For two days, the streets of Hampden will transform into a colorful block party complete with the Lil’ Hons parade, an oyster-shucking contest, tons of local craft vendors, and ongoing entertainment from local dance and musical acts. Cheer on your favorite gussied-up contestant in the “Best Hon” competition or, if you’re confident in your Bawlmerese, enter to be the next winner of this Charm City tradition.

27 S. Patterson Park Ave. 6:30-8:30 p.m. Free.

There’s no shortage of outdoor summer concerts in the city, but there’s something about stretching out under the Pagoda at Patterson Park and listening to local jams that always pulls us in. Round out your weekend with the first concert in this free summertime series, featuring Baltimore-based Americana band Cara Kelly & the Tell Tale and its soulful and soaring harmonies. Hear this five-person band serenade the crowd as the sun sets and mark your calendars for Charm City Junction’s performance at the Pagoda on June 25.

Druid Hill Park. 7:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. $20-55.

It doesn’t matter if you’re new to Charm City or a tried-and-true Baltimorean, this two-wheeled tour is the best way to get to know the city’s parks in one fell swoop. Dust off your helmet and hop on for this 17th annual recreational bike ride on one of four routes that give riders an up-close view of our parks and neighborhoods. Be it via the breezy five-mile ride or the 35-mile adventure, this cycle around the city is the perfect way to cruise into summer.

Sandlot, 1000 Wills St. 3-7 p.m. Free.

Skip the typical Memorial Day backyard barbecues (sorry, Mom) in favor of this culinary star-studded cookout at Harbor Point’s waterfront oasis. Hit the “beach” and spend Sunday afternoon sampling eats from some of the best grillmasters in the city, including Spike Gjerde of Woodberry Kitchen, Steve Chu of Ekiben, David Thomas of Ida B’s Table, and Carlos Raba of Clavel, as well as special guest Tae Strain of Momofuku CCDC in Washington, D.C. Jam out to live music by local troubadour Caleb Stine and, once the food coma has passed, indulge in sweets from Pure Chocolate by Jinji Fraser and David Alima of The Charmery.

The Maryland Zoo, 1 Safari Pl. 1-7 p.m.$24.99-75.99.

We can’t think of a better way to kick off Memorial Day weekend than hanging out with Maryland Zoo’s polar bears and penguins while sipping on local brews. In between unlimited samplings of beers from more than 80 regional breweries, bop along to live music by artists like Ballyhoo! and Amish Outlaws and soak up the suds with eats from dozens of food vendors. Best of all? Every dollar raised goes directly back to the zoo.

Creative Alliance, 3134 Eastern Ave. 8 p.m. $18.

If you thought this year’s Met Gala featured the best campy couture looks around, think again. Follow the trail of glitter and false eyelashes to the Creative Alliance for the annual Baltimore Drag Awards, hosted by powerhouse MCs Brooklyn Heights and Betty O’Hellno who will lead the camp-tastic audience through a cocktail mixer, awards ceremony, and a series of fierce performances. While it’s too late to sit VIP, snag tickets to be in the company of the city’s best drag performers and see if you can spot the standout entertainers featured in our June Pride issue.

1100 Hollins St. 12-8 p.m. Free.

Summer in the city is full of street festivals, but after 36 years this Sowebo arts and music extravaganza continues to stand out among the pack. Held on the streets around Hollins Market, this neighborhood-wide affair boasts three stages of music—with sets by local bands like Deaf Scene and Joe Keyes and the Late Bloomer Band—along with tons of family-friendly activities, including a craft rumble, a petting station with furry friends from Irvine Nature Center, and a puppet performance by Black Cherry Puppet Theater.

The Baltimore Museum of Art, 10 Art Museum Dr. 8-11 p.m. $20-25.

When visiting hours end, the real art party begins. To commemorate the final weekend of the Monsters & Myths: Surrealism and War in the 1930s and 1940s exhibition, pack the Baltimore Art Museum to experience sound art, musical performances by artist Hans Berg, Surrealist-inspired games, and pop-up activities through the night. After downing signature cocktails and bites from Gertrude’s Restaurant, take advantage of late-night access to the galleries and spend some time with works by artists like Salvador Dalí and Pablo Picasso before the exhibition closes on Sunday.

OPEN

Papi’s Tacos Hampden: We’ve been patiently waiting for the day that we could finally move this one into the ‘open’ category. After weeks of delays, the owners of Papi’s Tacos in Fells Point have officially opened the doors to their new sister location on Falls Road in Hampden. The former home of longtime dive bar Dimitri’s Tavern has been transformed into a modern-industrial taqueria with wooden floors, strung lights, and colorful flowers. Diners in Hampden can now enjoy the same Mexican street food that they have come to know and love at the Fells Point flagship, including grilled elote, queso fundido, loaded quesadillas, and tacos al pastor. Of course, the bar will also be serving up massive margaritas in signature Papi’s flavors like prickly pear and cinnamon peach. 3820 Falls Road. 443-449-5796

Nalley Fresh: Don’t be surprised to see a familiar logo while strolling through Baltimore Washington Thurgood-Marshall International Airport (BWI) this summer. This fan-favorite local salad chain opened its latest location—marking its eleventh eatery in Maryland—in between Gates A and B earlier this week. Fuel up for your flight with Nalley’s signature DIY salads, wraps, and bowls made with a range of proteins and more than 100 toppings.

COMING SOON

The Bluebird Pub: This new extension of the Bluebird Cocktail Room in Hampden will official debut on Friday, May 10. Housed in the subterranean space below the bar that previously operated as European cafe Little Bird, the pub is expected to feel “handsome and familiar,” featuring walls lined with playful sketches of speakeasy bartenders that date back to 1932. With a strong emphasis on whiskey, the bar program will spotlight a signature Old Fashioned made with Old Grand-Dad bonded bourbon, a reliable Rusty Nail, and a barrel-aged Cachaça Sour shaken with lemon juice and sugarcane. Chefs Chance Jones and Bri White will serve up a menu of elevated pub fare to pair with all of the drinks. Be on the lookout for a foie gras burger, vegetarian broccoli sandwich with lemon aioli, and French toast with cherry cream cheese during brunch. 3600 Hickory Ave. 667-303-3263

Twisted Teahouse: In other Hampden news, local baker Angela Vogel will officially cut the ribbon at this new teahouse on the Avenue on Wednesday, May 8. It won’t be long before the bright blue storefront becomes a go-to for private tea parties, fair-trade teas, organic coffees, and custom cakes. The traditional tearoom will also offer fresh-baked scones, vegan pastries, and specialty sweets like banana rum crunch cupcakes. The spot is a spinoff of the original Twisted Teahouse, a tea parlor and consignment shop that Vogel previously operated inside the historic Savage Mill complex in Howard County. 813 W. 36th St. 410-991-2776

CH-CH CHANGES

Indochine: Mt. Vernon locals might have noticed a sign posted to the door of this Vietnamese eatery last week, in which owners Amy Nguyen and Alawi Akbar announced that they had sold Indochine. “Mt. Vernon welcomed my family with open arms and for that I will be forever grateful,” Akbar wrote in the message. “We have developed many friendships and loyal customers over the years, but the time has come for me to take a little break and devote some time to my family.” A new team is expected to reopen the shop under the same name with a similar menu (think pho, banh mi sandwiches, and crispy spring rolls) on Friday, May 2. There’s also a happy ending in store for Nyugen and Akbar, who are planning to open a new location in Patterson Park called IndoViet this November. Stay tuned for more details. 1015 N. Charles St. 410-539-4636

NEWS

The Elephant: Speaking of happy endings, this Mt. Vernon gem got one earlier this week. After a drawn-out saga between the owners and an investor who took legal action to seize the building, the team has confirmed that The Elephant is in it for the long haul. Crediting “strong and strategic legal representation” and “an outpouring of support from guests and the community,” the owners have resolved the conflict and reopened the historic mansion for dinner service Tuesday-Saturday. “We are so excited that we will continue to serve our cuisine and cocktails in this magnificent building,” the owners wrote in a statement.” 921 N. Charles St. 443-447-7878

Josh White Moves on to White Oak Hospitality: Local food lovers are still reeling from the loss of chef Josh White’s barbecue concept Smoke, which closed its doors in Cockeysville last month. But, luckily, White’s cooking will still be well within reach. The chef recently joined the team at White Oak Hospitality—the restaurant group behind Wayward Smokehouse, Bandito’s Bar + Kitchen, and 101 Baltimore in Federal Hill. It’s fortunate timing, as the team is also preparing to debut a second Wayward with an adjoining raw bar concept called The Curious Oyster in White Marsh this summer. In the meantime, head to Federal Hill to experience White’s innovative style showcased in new dishes like the korean cheesesteak at Wayward, and the “Hokey Poke” bowl at 101. “We’re ready to show Baltimore that Fed Hill isn’t just a bar scene anymore,” White said in a statement. “It’s a dining scene, as well.”

EPICUREAN EVENTS

5/2: Atwater’s 20th Anniversary
Back in 1999, this local cafe chain began as a small bakery making only one kind of bread. Now, 20 years, one big commissary kitchen, a farm, and six retail shops later, Atwater’s has grown into a Charm City staple. To celebrate its big birthday, all locations will be giving away free cupcakes while supplies last. Plus, the cafe is bringing back one of its first-ever breads, the sunflower flax loaf, at its original price of $2.50 for one day only. Multiple locations including 3601 Boston St. 667-309-7146

5/3-5: Sandlot Grand Opening Weekend

Baltimore’s beach makes its big return this weekend with plenty of festivities to kick off its third season in style. Head to Harbor Point on Friday night to watch the sunset while dancing to live tunes spun by DJ Sean. On Saturday, play some Splash City Golfwhile listening to the soulful sounds of Funsho performing from 6-9 p.m. And on Sunday, Sandlot will host a Cinco de Mayo fiesta with salsa lessons, Barr Hill gin and tonics, and a swing combo salsa band from 2-5 p.m. Throughout the weekend, stop by the shipping containers-turned-kitchens to stock up on summer snacks like soft pretzels, chicken wings, nachos, and eats on a stick. 1000 Wills St.

COMING SOON

Abbey Burger Bistro: Husband-and-wife owners Russ and Marigot Miller—along with their business partner Jason Zink of Smaltimore—have already graced Federal Hill, Fells Point, and Ocean City with their mouthwatering burgers and tots. This fall, they’re expanding yet again with another Abbey spinoff in the former home of The Nickel Taphouse in Mt. Washington. This time around, the team is partnering with chef Patrick Morrow to add to Abbey’s sports bar vibe with seafood steamers like shrimp and clams. “We want to use the Abbey concept and keep some of the exotic meats, but also add some things to broaden it up a little bit,” Russ says.

A renovation will yield new floors and revamped bars that will emphasize local and Belgian craft drafts. Of course, in keeping with Abbey tradition, the plan is for the bar to be a hub for European soccer matches. Having grown up in the area, Russ adds that he’s excited to enhance the dining scene in North Baltimore. “Our food scene in Baltimore is continuing to grow and get better and better,” he says. “It’s exciting that we’re stepping up our food game and it’s being recognized from all over.” 1604 Kelly Ave.

On Top Hot Dogs + Burgers: Chef Federico Tischler is shifting his focus from Venezuelan street food to all-American classics at his stall inside R. House in Remington. This Friday, the former White Envelope concept will transform into On Top Hot Dogs + Burgers, Tischler’s new brainchild inspired by his grandmother’s ability to whip up meals using whatever she could find in the refrigerator. “You learn how to cook using recipes, but at the same time, using associations and the ingredients available to you,” he says in a statement. In keeping with that mentality, Tischler will highlight hot dogs topped with mish-mashed ingredients. (The signature “Bullet on the Blue Sky” dog comes dressed with bacon, cheddar cheese, red cabbage, and ground crispy plantains.) Additionally, the menu features classic burgers with DIY toppings including everything from fried egg to confit cherry tomatoes and 12 different sauces. 301 W. 29th St.

Papi’s Tacos: It’s an exciting month for this Fells Point taqueria best known for its Mexican street vibe and killer margaritas. Not only is the Aliceanna Street staple celebrating its fifth birthday this week, but a second Papi’s is expected to debut any day now in the former home of Dimitri’s Tavern in Hampden. Opening across the street from its sister-restaurant Wicked Sisters on Falls Road, the new location will mimic the style of the flagship with its signature antojitos (small snacks) and build-your-own street tacos in a space decorated with interior greenery and lots of sugar skulls. While patiently awaiting the new opening, fans of the restaurant are invited to celebrate Papi’s big birthday at the Fells Point location tonight. Swing by for specials including $5 house margaritas and house wines, $4 sangria, $3 draft beers, and $3 shots of tequila. 1703 Aliceanna St. 410-299-8480

Yelp Names Baltimore a Top Foodie City: On the heels of last week’s James Beard Award semifinalists announcement, the national acclaim keeps rolling in for the local dining scene. This week, Yelp ranked Baltimore among its top 10 foodie cities throughout the country. In compiling the list, Yelp’s data science team examined factors such as ratings, reviews, cuisine diversity, and percentage of food photos to determine where users love to eat right now. Coming in at No. 9, Baltimore’s write-up gives nods to our casual pubs, award-winning chefs, and food halls—specifically mentioning spots such as Water for Chocolate and Annabel Lee Tavern. We’re in the company of famous foodie hubs including St. Louis, Houston, San Diego, Honolulu, and San Francisco.

Grand Central Sold to Landmark Partners: It’s the end of an era for this decades-old dance club in Mt. Vernon, a landmark in the LGBTQ community, which was put on the market by longtime owner Don Davis more than a year ago. “My heart has always been there,” Davis told us after making the decision in 2017. “I’ve met so many wonderful people in the past couple of decades. I’ll miss it, but it’s just time.” Last week, it was announced that the club had finally sold to local developers Landmark Partners—the firm behind the City House coworking space located just a few blocks away from Grand Central on Eager Street. For now, the bar remains open under new management, but in the coming months the new owners plan to transform the space into an office building with two retail storefronts on the street level. Stay tuned for more updates. 1001 N. Charles St. 410-752-7133

Sandlot Sets Spring Reopening Date: The current frigid temperatures might make it difficult to envision sipping frozen cocktails at Sandlot in Harbor Point, but the waterfront hangout will be back up and running before we know it. The Woodberry Kitchen sister-spot will officially reopen for the season on May 3. Throughout the past two summers, we’ve gotten to know the beach-themed peninsula as a social spot for enjoying lawn games, live music, and eats on a stick. This time around, expect all of the same attractions with a slew of new events including silent disco parties, plant workshops with B. Willow, wine tastings with Old Westminster Winery, and sunset cruises on board the Baltimore Water Taxis. 1000 Wills St.

EPICUREAN EVENTS

3/8: International Women’s Day at Topside
Gather your favorite boss babes and head up to Topside on the 14th floor of Hotel Revival for this Women’s Day celebration benefiting My Sister’s Place—a local resource center serving women and children experiencing homelessness in the city. The bar will be offering $5 wine specials for all of the ladies, and from 5-9 p.m., a percentage of all purchases will be donated to the cause. Aside from the wine, the bar team will feature a special cocktail dubbed the “Friday Evening”—a nod to Baltimore suffragist and philanthropist Mary Elizabeth Garrett and her friends. 101 W. Monument St. 410-727-7101

3/11: Moccagatta Wine Dinner at Cinghiale
Next week, Cinghiale in Harbor East is welcoming master vintner Martina Minuto all the way from the Barbaresco in Piedmont region of Italy. The wine-making expert works on her family’s estate in Barbaresco, which has roots dating back to the 1800s, and will pair several of their wines with a special menu by executive chef James Lewandowski. Dishes on deck will include roasted forest mushroom bruschetta, beef tenderloin with smoked potato puree, and a hazelnut cake with dark chocolate cherry sauce. 822 Lancaster St. 410-547-8282. $129

Lupa: Foreman Wolf Restaurant Group served the last meal at its Roman trattoria in Columbia last weekend. After transitioning from Petit Louis in January of 2018, Lupa quickly became a neighborhood spot for housemade pasta, focaccia pizzas, and some of the best gelato this side of the pond. “We love Lupa and will miss Howard County and all of our regular guests,” Foreman Wolf co-owner Tony Foreman said in a statement. Foreman went on to explain that the restaurant’s investors were no longer interested in funding the spot. “We’re proud and grateful for our time here.” 10215 Wincopin Cir, Columbia

Trinacria Cafe: Stationed on West Centre Street across from Mount Vernon Marketplace, this neighborhood cafe is a go-to for glasses of wine paired with Italian pastas and subs. (Not to mention the lively drag brunches.) But, for the time being, regulars are going to have to visit Trinacria’s decades-old flagship market on West Paca Street to quell cravings. Owner Vince Fava posted a handwritten note to the cafe’s front door last week, which announced that the spot will be closed “until further notice.” Luckily, the downtown deli is open for business to hold everyone over until the Mt. Vernon location—hopefully—reopens in the coming weeks. 111 W. Centre St.

Just when we thought Sandlot had everything we needed to get our beach fix in the city—waterfront views, a sandy shoreline, and spiked slushies—they added the one thing that was missing: steaming piles of crabs. Starting this Friday, Harbor Point’s waterfront oasis will be serving up crabs from Conrad’s Crabs & Seafood Market on the first Friday evening of the summer months along with must-have sides like potato salad and corn on the cob. Wash it all down with beers from event partner Flying Dog Brewery, including the Old Bay-infused Dead Rise brew for the perfect pairing.

The Bluebird Cocktail Room, 3600 Hickory Ave. Fri.-Sat. 5 p.m.-2 a.m.

Somehow, it’s already been a year since Hampden’s literary-themed cocktail bar opened its doors, and this weekend, The Bluebird is celebrating its first birthday with tiki-inspired drinks, eats, and music. Starting on Thursday, the neighborhood favorite will transform into a tropical oasis as part of its weekly summer event and continue the vibes through its anniversary on Saturday. Don your best Hawaiian shirt and raise a frozen absinthe frappe to many more years of artisanal cocktails and bookish style.

Current Space, 421 N. Howard St. Fri.-Sat. 12-4 p.m. Free.

Since coming onto the Baltimore arts scene almost 15 years ago, this small Bromo Arts District gallery has become known for hosting experimental exhibitions that push artistic boundaries. On Friday, the gallery will debut two new exhibitions: Diaphanous Shades, a collaborative work by Virginia-based artists Brian Burr and Lauren Rice that visually compresses the past, present, and future of Western civilization, and Sweet Sweat, a solo exhibition by photographer Lindsey Bottos that focuses on faded relationships. Head downtown to see these thought-provoking works, which will be on display through the end of the month.

The Baltimore Museum of Art, 10 Art Museum Dr. 5-9 p.m. $35-50.

Jack Whitten, whose revelatory works are now on display at The Baltimore Museum of Art, had a deep appreciation for jazz music and is the inspiration for this year’s summer concert series at the museum. This Saturday, hear outer space-inspired experimental jazz music from the renowned Sun Ra Arkestra in the BMA’s Sculpture Garden, and, before the music starts at 7 p.m., enjoy evening access to Whitten’s widely-regarded exhibition.

In an ordinary game of golf, the sound of a ball hitting the water usually results in a penalty shot—and a groan from the swinger. But when players tee off at a Splash City Golf driving range, that sound signals dinnertime for schools of fish in the Inner Harbor.

Since 2016, friends and co-founders Daniel Bucci, Shawn Flaherty, and Jamie Hodges have been bringing pop-up driving ranges to waterfront establishments across Baltimore (think Sandlot, Barcocina, and Rye Street Tavern), where both veteran linksmen and first-time putters attempt to score a hole in one on floating targets using golf balls made of fish food.

As a golf enthusiast, Flaherty was inspired by his waterfront job at the Living Classrooms Foundation to create an urban driving range that was both environmentally friendly and fun for city residents. He brought the idea to Bucci and, shortly thereafter, the duo launched the company with a target prototype: a rowboat outfitted with a cinder-block-weighted flag.

With help from Hodges, a mechanical engineer and patented inventor, the team has upgraded to a GPS-positioned inflatable target that is kept steady by an app. “[The concept] fits in Baltimore particularly well because it’s outside of the box,” says Flaherty, “and this town is very much that.”

The golf balls—which are manufactured in Barcelona, Spain, and sold in baskets of five, 15, or 30—biodegrade within 72 hours of hitting the water. Last year, Baltimoreans hit more than 10,000 balls into the harbor, and this summer, Splash City Golf will expand to new locations across Charm City, Washington, D.C., and the Eastern Shore, setting up courses at restaurants, bars, and private events such as weddings (including Flaherty’s this month).

The self-funded startup hopes to grow by making the balls locally and securing partnership locations across the county, while sticking to their Baltimore roots. “There’s a body of water in every city,” says Bucci. “Eventually, we want to be in all of them.”

Sure, a stiff bourbon hits the spot during the colder months. But in the summer, it’s all about the slushies, daiquiris, and drinks on the rocks. As temperatures continue to rise, area bars are offering plenty of libations to help survive summer scorchers. From tiki drinks and kombucha cocktails to frozen wine and boozy slushies, there are plenty of pours to choose from. Here are a few options to catch a buzz while keeping cool:

Absinthe Frappe at The Bluebird Cocktail Room
When dreaming up the summer cocktail menu at this literary-themed haven in Hampden, bar manager Ben Poole thought about ways to incorporate classic elements, while also adding some fun summer flair. Thus, his frozen Absinthe Frappe was born. “Absinthe is sweeter than most, but doesn’t take itself too seriously,” Poole says. The simple refresher mixes absinthe with sugar and mint extract, gets mixed in a slushie machine, and arrives garnished with star anise. 3600 Hickory Ave., 667-303-3263. $12.

Bed of Roses at Sandlot

Step up to the shipping containers-turned-makeshift bars at this beachfront hangout in Harbor Point to see rows of slushie machines mixing up frozen drinks behind the counter. Among the most popular sustainable summer cocktails—which are all made with ingredients from local purveyors—is the “Bed of Roses,” Sandlot’s sweet spin on frosé that blends rosé, rosé vermouth, strawberry juice, honey, and watermelon juice. In keeping with the farm-to-table feel, the Instagram-worthy drinks come garnished with fresh herbs and local flowers. 1000 Wills St. $10

Sack Lunch at R. Bar

The team behind R. Bar in Remington is getting nostalgic about summers past with a camp-themed menu that nods to childhood snacks and recognizable pop-culture references. (Think sips inspired by Wet Hot American Summer and ’90s Nickelodeon series Salute Your Shorts.) Highlights include a s’mores-flavored dessert cocktail, the gin-based “Camp Granada,” and the “Sack Lunch”—a mixture of sesame-washed bourbon from R. House neighbor BeBim, Falerna Carménere wine, Shrub District blueberry basil cocktail vinegar, strawberry purée, and a Teddy Graham wrapped in a Fruit Roll-Up sleeping bag. 301 W. 29th St., 443-347-3570. $10

At just 3 months old, Kaite Rose Broadhurst was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, an inherited disease that affects lung function and the digestive system. But, for the first time in her nearly 30 years on this planet, she’s feeling like there is light at the end of the tunnel.

“I’m super excited about a cure,” Broadhurst says through years. “In the past six months, my doctor has sat me down and said he never thought he’d live to see this day.”

In February, the FDA approved a new drug that treats the underlying causes of cystic fibrosis and is applicable to almost half of the 30,000 people living with the disease in the United States. During clinical trials, the Symdeko drug was able to increase lung function, reduce exacerbations, and—most importantly—increase quality of life.

“I live a fuller life because of the treatments that I have,” Broadhurst says. “My life is mine now and it’s not as bogged down by the disease. Fundraisers have directly funded huge medical milestones in my life and that’s the truth for anyone who is treated for CF.”

One such fundraiser, Feastival, will be taking place in Baltimore on Saturday, June 9, at the Sandlot at Harbor Point where local restaurants, bars, and breweries will be offering fare and proceeds benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) of Maryland.

“Unlike a fancy gala or walk, this event is just you hanging out with your friends on the water,” says Broadhurst, who most recently worked at Mix 106.5 and is an ambassador for CFF of Maryland. “You get to relax on the beach, eat good food, and support people around you.”

Another great advantage of the event being outdoors is that normally, because of the disease, CF patients can’t be in the same room together. But, because it’s open air, they’ll at least be able to attend the same fundraiser (and will wear ribbons to alert each other).

Though Broadhurst is ecstatic for the recent advances in cystic fibrosis, she’s been lucky enough to experience breakthroughs from an early age. She was one of the first patients to get a Monarch vest from the DuPont Hospital for Children, which helps clear her airway.

“There really is no getting over CF—you always have to deal with it,” Broadhurst says. “But the vest was able to give more independence at such a young age. Events like these give me a chance to thank people and show them exactly what their dollars are doing.”

Feastival will be taking place at the Sandlot for the first time this year (instead of the promenade outside of the Four Seasons Hotel Baltimore). But the food lineup remains just as stellar with participating vendors like Ampersea, Blue Put BBQ, The Charmery, Chez Hugo, Ekiben, Hersh’s Pizza and Drinks, Full Circle Doughnuts, Gunther & Co., La Food Marketa, Minnow, Stall 11, and Wit & Wisdom.

Additionally, the Baltimore Bartenders Guild will be mixing up drinks with regional spirits from Sagamore, Belle Isle, Lyon, and Sandy Bottom Rum out of Annapolis. Look out for other beverages from Ceremony Coffee and Hunt Valley-based B.C. Brewery.

“You don’t have to know anyone with CF to know you did an amazing job and still got a pretty decent buzz on,” says Broadhurst with a laugh. “Personally, I’ve never been more motivated to fundraise because now a cure actually seems attainable. That’s something I never thought would happen.”

COMING SOON

The Charmery Towson: Anneslie locals might have noticed the new, custom-made ice cream cone sculpture that towers over the building at 6807 York Road. The storefront is now home to the newest location of The Charmery, the beloved ice cream shop whose flagship sits on the Avenue in Hampden. Owners David and Laura Alima are putting the finishing touches on the larger shop in preparation for its grand opening this Saturday, May 26. Decorated with custom wallpaper, interior greenery, and vintage VHS tapes that pay homage to the building’s history as an old video store, the shop features a 16-flavor lineup including old favorites like Old Bay Caramel, and a new Rocky York Road flavor (chocolate, ice cream, peanuts, and marshmallow sauce) inspired by its new address. 6807 York Rd.

Cinnaholic: Making decadent cinnamon rolls without eggs or dairy might seem like a daunting task, but this vegan bakery has perfected its recipe. The California-based franchise, which was featured on Shark Tank, will officially cut the ribbon at its newest location at the Rotunda in Hampden on Friday, June 8. To celebrate the debut of its first Baltimore eatery, Cinnaholic will be giving out $1 cinnamon rolls from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on opening day. Diners can customize the treats with a variety of frosting flavors and toppings like berries, nuts, marshmallows, and chocolate chips. 727 West 40th St.

NEWS:

Food Network Gives Love to Baltimore: We’re always happy to see our dining scene get some well-deserved national acclaim. Earlier this week, the Food Network published its picks for the best places to eat in the Baltimore—describing us a “way-underrated food town with accessible traditions, strong chefs, and a palpable sense of slightly off-kilter pride.” Among the many spots that received shout-outs include local gems like Ale Mary’s, Matthew’s Pizza, The Chasseur, DiPasquales, Red Emma’s, Clavel, Ekiben, Idle Hour, Wet City, Blacksauce Kitchen, and the aforementioned Charmery.

Andrew Zimmern Gets a Taste of Baltimore: Speaking of national television praise, The Travel Channel star Andrew Zimmern stopped by a handful of local spots on an episode of his show “The Zimmern Project” that aired earlier this week. Zimmern’s first visit was to Lexington Market for a classic turkey dinner at Krause’s and classic crab cakes at Faidley’s. His Baltimore food tour also included sandwiches at DiPasquale’s in Highlandtown, crabs at LP Steamers in Locust Point, tailgating outside of M&T Bank Stadium, and a meal at Rye Street Tavern in Port Covington.

Zack Mills Moving on from Wit & Wisdom: It’s the end of an era for Wit & Wisdom inside the Four Seasons Baltimore. Executive chef Zack Mills took to Instagram earlier this week to announce that he would be moving on from the Chesapeake-inspired restaurant after heading up its kitchen for the past five years. His last night of service will be Saturday, June 2. “It means so much that I got the opportunity to help run a restaurant in my home state for the same restaurant group family that taught me everything,” Mills wrote, referring to his longtime mentor and Wit & Wisdom operator Michael Mina. “Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who has supported this restaurant over the years.” Mills is looking forward to taking time off before making his next move.

5/26: Baltimore Herb Fest
Now back for its 31st year, the Baltimore Herb Festival transforms Leakin Park into a plant paradise with more than 50 outdoor vendors, live music, free rides on miniature steam trains, and a lineup of lectures from local gardening professionals. Plus, there will be plenty of food trucks on site for attendees to grab lunch while taking in all of the greenery. Leakin Park, 1920 Eagle Drive, $7, 9:30 a.m.- 3 p.m.

5/28: Red, White, and Blue Crab Feast at Minnow
Nothing says Memorial Day Weekend like picking crabs and cracking beers. This Monday, Minnow in South Baltimore is doing just that with a special holiday brunch featuring all-you-can-eat crabs, frites with smoked red pepper aioli, roasted corn with lime crema, red beans with ham hocks, and Napa slaw. Wash down all of the eats with $12 Bottomless Bloody Marys and mimosas, $2 RAR Brewing Country Ride pale ales, and boozy snowballs. Minnow, 2 E.
SHUT

Chick P City: The days are numbered for this Middle Eastern outpost in Mt. Vernon. Last week, owners Majeed and Dina Tamerjan announced on Facebook that their last day in business would be Thursday, May 31. “Thank you so much for all of the love you showed us,” the post reads. “We won’t forget it.” The Read Street spot was best known for its falafel, pita wraps, and traditional spreads. As a thank you to all of its customers, Chick P City will be offering 10 percent off all platters until its last night. 202 W. Read St. 410-244-7009

Even if you’ve never heard of Taharka Bros. ice cream, chances are you’ve sampled it at area restaurants and retailers. The droolworthy flavors (honey graham, anyone?) are currently sold at more than 75 eateries, college campuses, and ice cream shops all over town. Plus, the Clipper Mill-based creamery roves in its hot pink “Change-Maker Mobile” to serve scoops while promoting its mission of supporting Baltimore youth. This weekend, join the Taharka team at School of Food in East Baltimore to learn the ins and outs of ice cream making—starting with a classic base. Just as Taharka dreams up flavors inspired by the local community (including the peppermint “Greenmount Chip” and coffee-flavored “Get Woke”) participants will be tasked with creating unique recipes influenced by their own experiences.

Old Westminster Winery changed the game last year when it rolled out its canned vino varieties—which are each equivalent to half of a bottle. From the beginning, the team knew that the cans would be a perfect fit for Sandlot, the island oasis at Harbor Point that has a strict no glass policy.
There’s nothing quite like a summer night at Merriweather Post Pavilion—with warm breezes, cold beverages, and glimpses of fireflies lighting up Symphony Woods. The venue’s annual summer movie series returns this Saturday night with a special double feature starting at 6 p.m. Bring the kiddos and spread out a blanket on the lush lawn to enjoy a showing of Sing, followed by Dirty Dancing at 8:30 p.m. Another draw is that Merriweather will be offering discounted concessions (think essentials like chicken tenders, fries, soft pretzels, ice cream, and popcorn) and, of course, plenty of adult beverages.

For 15 years, locals have made this Friday night gathering at Belvedere Square a summertime ritual. Kicking off the concert’s special anniversary season this weekend is the genre-defying funk, blues, reggae, and rock sounds of local favorite Kelly Bell Band. After the clock strikes five and the long weekend has officially begun, throw a lawn chair over your shoulder and head to the square to enjoy live tunes, snacks from the market’s vendors (including newbies Mason’s Lobster Rolls and Prigel Family Creamery), mingling with friends and neighbors, and all-around good vibes.

Hundreds of local artists, crafters, and musicians will gather in the heart of Hollins Market this Sunday for the 35th annual SoWeBo Arts & Music Festival—a Memorial Day Weekend tradition that showcases the breadth of Baltimore’s arts scene. Wander around the four-block footprint to peruse handmade wares, outdoor sculpture, kid’s crafts, food trucks, puppet shows, and a non-juried art exhibit with an array of affordable pieces. This year’s jam-packed live music lineup spans three stages. With acts ranging from roots and folk band Skribe to the funk and jazz-inspired Joe Keyes and The Late Bloomer Band, there will be plenty of opportunities to jam out.

When Corey Polyoka started to configure the beach furniture, recycled shipping containers, and vintage 1968 Safari Airstream trailer at Sandlot last spring, he knew he had something special. But he didn’t anticipate just how much his urban island concept would catch on with locals.

On opening day last June, hundreds packed the 40,000-square-foot, open-air oasis to sip slushies, sample skewered snacks, and challenge friends to yard games while soaking up sunshine on the border of Fells Point and Harbor East.

“That first day was incredible,” says Polyoka, managing partner of Spike Gjerde’s Foodshed restaurant group, which operates Sandlot, as well as other restaurants like Woodberry Kitchen and Parts & Labor. “I’m an operator, so in my mind I quickly realized, ‘Wow I’m not sure if we were quite ready for that.’ But then seeing how people were enjoying it on social media and making their way down there a lot last summer was really amazing.”

Polyoka is hoping to keep that momentum going this year, as he and his team gear up for Sandlot’s second season opener on Saturday, May 5. This time around, the beachfront hangout is upping its game with additional seating and shaded areas, expanded food and drink offerings, weekly live music, athletic programming on the sand, and even more community events.

“There’s more of everything at Sandlot this season,” Polyoka says. “I think toward the end of last year we really found our groove. We’re excited to start there and pick up where we left off.”

Beginning this weekend, the outdoor eatery and rec yard will be open from 4-11 p.m. on weekdays, and 11 a.m.-11 p.m. on weekends until late October. Here’s what to look out for as the season kicks into gear.

Expanded Eats

Larger Focus on Seafood: In keeping with Foodshed’s sustainability mantra, the food program will serve more seafood this year. “We’re so close to the water and connected to the bay,” Polyoka says. “So it made sense to focus the menu around fish and shellfish coming out of the Chesapeake.” Though fan-favorite snacks like garlic and herb fries, soft pretzels, ice cream, and pulled pork sandwiches will remain, Polyoka is hoping to incorporate more fish into Sandlot’s skewers, burgers, and nachos this season. He is also looking forward to hosting more waterfront crab feasts as the summer goes on.

Karma Farm at Harbor Point Growing On-Site Produce: Last month, farmers from Monkton’s Karma Farm began installing two hoop houses and a hydroponic unit on the Harbor Point land surrounding Sandlot—making it even more convenient for the kitchen to source local ingredients. The farm will provide greens and fresh vegetables for the culinary team, while also hosting a weekend produce stand at Sandlot for visitors to purchase items like fresh herbs, cucumbers, peppers, eggplant, and tomatoes.

Beach Flag Service Model: Table service will have a fun twist this season. In order to streamline wait times, each outdoor table will have its own custom-made flag that diners can raise when they’re ready to order. The model was inspired by a trip that Polyoka took to Florida with his family last summer. “We were on the beach and our cabana had a flag next to it,” he recalls. “After raising it a few times it dawned upon me. I was like, ‘This would work great for us.’”

Beach Beverages

Soak Up The Sun by The Brewer’s Art: Later this month, Sandlot will introduce its own exclusive beer in collaboration with The Brewer’s Art. The brew, fittingly dubbed Soak Up The Sun, is a light-bodied saison made with Choptank hops and lemon peel from The Brewer’s Art co-owner Tom Creegan’s lemon tree. Creegan says that it was “overwhelmingly fun” to partner on a brew for the waterfront spot. “We’re such a fall-winter place,” he says of his dimly lit brewpub in Mt. Vernon. “We love finding ways to have fun outside. And Sandlot is such a different thing for Baltimore. If you can’t make it to Ocean City for the weekend, you can do a little bit of that right here after work.” An official Soak Up The Sun release party will take place on Sunday, May 27.

Old Westminster Wine in a Can: When Drew Baker of Old Westminster Winery (OWW) first began toying with the idea of canning wine last year, Sandlot was one of the first spots that came to mind. He remembers running the idea by Polyoka, who was naturally enthusiastic about the prospect of offering 100-percent Maryland wine at the island hub. “That was one of the first major greenlights for us,” Baker says. “The Foodshed group has a tremendous support of local agriculture right down through their wine program, however Sandlot was always tough for them because they have a glass-free policy.” Old Westminster began canning wines last fall and is looking forward to offering its varieties at Sandlot for the first time this summer. (OWW is even hosting a “Can Jam” party at the beach on May 19th to celebrate.) The spring line—featuring a semi-sweet white and sparkling rosé—will be offered at Sandlot until June 19th, when OWW debuts its summer releases.

Bottled Kombucha Cocktails: Aside from additional satellite bars to minimize lines, the beverage program now boasts two new slushie machines with more flavors, and a signature bottled cocktail that combines local Counterpart Kombucha with vodka and fresh herbs. “They’re going to hit that vodka soda kind of ABV,” Polyoka says. “We think it’s going to be a nice addition especially for the warmer weather.”

Seating and Shade

Beach Chairs: To accommodate the crowds, staffers have added more lounge seating and outdoor patio furniture on the beach. They’ve also invested in massive outdoor fans to help visitors stay cool during summer scorchers.

Summer Shade: Speaking of heat waves, the team is making it a priority to add more shaded sections this year. In addition to installing heavier cloth over the garden area near the decks, there will also be increased shade over the shipping containers for diners waiting in line for food and drinks.

New Covered Structure: Sandlot’s new building, which Polyoka describes as a “vintage metal carport,” will act as a permanent rain and shade structure. The building will be able to seat 40-50 guests and will also be available to be rented out for private parties.

5/5: Opening Day Pig Roast and Monument City Pagoda Release Party
Sandlot’s opening day bash will double as a release party for the new Pagoda Pale Ale from Monument City Brewing in Highlandtown. Plus, the team is roasting a full pig to celebrate. Snack on special pulled pork tacos and sandwiches while sampling beer and dancing to live music from Mike McHenry and DJ Kev.

5/10: Baltimore Teachers Happy Hour
After the final bell rings, all teachers are invited to head over to Harbor Point to receive 15-percent off of their bar tabs during happy hour when they present their school ID’s.

5/13: Mothers’ Day with B. Willow and Charm City Meadworks
Celebrate mom at this flower-filled event with Remington plant shop B. Willow. There will be bouquet-making stations for little ones, and a specialty mead from Charm City Meadworks for moms to sip while their kiddos participate in the craft.

5/26: King of The Castle Competition
Show off your skills in the spot’s first-ever sandcastle competition later this month. Participants will have four hours to build their structures while spectators enter to win raffle prizes and sample Monument City brews throughout the day. The contest is open to professional and novice sculptors of all ages. “I was happy that Sandlot became such a family place last year,” says Polyoka, a father of four. “It was something I was really hoping we could do, and it was always great to see kids there playing in the sandboxes. I think that’s one of the things we really got right.”

This Saturday afternoon, experience the best of both seasons with the beach vibes of the Sandlot harbor-front hangout and the R-month rewards of oyster season. Gather with fellow ostreaphiles and enjoy a step-by-step shucking demonstration by Scott Budden of Orchard Point Oyster Comany on the Eastern Shore. Master the craft of cracking open these delightful local delicacies—made extra earthy and sweet from their northern bay birthplace—and slurp a few down as Budden discusses oyster farming and reef restoration, with a take-home gift of your very own shucking knife and gloves to boot. All the while, sip Spike Gjerde’s brand-new Snake Oil lager and support the Oyster Recovery Partnership, the region’s leading nonprofit dedicated to restoring local oysters.

In Baltimore, breweries and benefits often go hand in hand as a means of nurturing the local community. On Saturday, Key Brewing Company, in collaboration with Checkerspot Brewing and Stillwater Artisanal, will be launching a Landing Bolts lager to support a new section of the redesigned Rash Field Park known as Jake’s Skatepark. This new skate area will pay tribute to Key Brewing co-owner’s son Jake, a young South Baltimore boy who loved skating but tragically lost his life because of a phone-distracted driver six years ago. This weekend, all proceeds from the Landing Bolts release will go towards its creation, so join the local skating community for boarding tricks and grub from Blue Pit BBQ and Chuck’s Trading Post.

With Halloween nearly upon us, there’s no better time to watch the 1975 cult classic that is the Rocky Horror Picture Show. For three nights at the Creative Alliance, dress up as your best Frank, Janet, or Riff Raff and enjoy a screening of the film that spawned an audience-participation phenomenon. The twisted comedy is set in a mysterious castle on a dark and stormy night, with wild characters, elaborate rock songs, and a plot that thrills, no matter how many times you’ve seen it. Join local burlesque dancers Betty O’Hellno, Bunny Vicious, Tapitha Kix, and Whiskey Joy, to name a few, for a punk-rock singalong to songs like “Sweet Transvestite” and “Hot Patootie, Bless My Soul,” with themed cocktails served at the bar all night.

At first glance, Sean K. Preston, a Fells Point regular and beloved Baltimore artist, looks like a classic country singer with his cowboy hat and sometimes-acoustic guitar. But underneath that outlaw appearance is a mix of musical styles waiting to be executed by his fast-flying fingers and gritty vocals that are as classic and rebellious as Johnny Cash. At Cats Eye Pub, hear the local songwriter alongside his band, the Loaded Pistols, for a night of blues, punk, country, and old-school rock-and-roll as Preston ruminates on topics of love, loss, and wanderlust.

This Saturday, whether you’re a diehard runner or recreational jogger, it’s time to grab your sneakers and hit the streets during Baltimore’s 17th running festival. From team relays and 5Ks to half and full marathons, there’s something for everyone in this run around town, which fills the city with thousands and thousands of athletes. We even recommend standing on the sidelines as an onlooker, because this beloved annual race is truly a sight to behold.

Former owner Christopher Spann confirmed earlier this week that the spot has since been sold to Patrick Dahlgren, who owns The Rowhouse Grille in Federal Hill. He and Bill Irvin, a former partner in La Folie Steak Frites and Wine Bar in Canton, will soon transform the restaurant into destination for American staples (think crab cakes and New York strip) paired with local beer and wine. The 100-seat spot will also debut a refurbished bar with garage-style doors when it opens in mid-July. 911 W. 36th St.

Flying Dog Tap House: Travelers passing through BWI will soon be able to enjoy this ultra-local beer-and-beef concept while waiting for flights to depart. Frederick’s Flying Dog Brewery has teamed up with Monkton-based Roseda Farm beef to launch the new restaurant on Concourse A, which will debut next month. The menu will feature dishes that fuse both brands, including a beef hotdog with Doggie Style Pale Ale beer cheese and sliders with garlic aioli made with Snake Dog IPA. 7050 Friendship Road.

NEWS

Annabel Lee Tavern: Foodies breathed a huge sigh of relief earlier this week when Annabel Lee Tavern owner Kurt X. Bragunier announced that his Edgar Allan Poe-themed spot would be staying open after all. Ongoing financial struggles prompted Bragunier to announce the closure of the spot last month, and, luckily, two regulars stepped in to save the bar soon after. A grand reopening date is slated for next month. Duck-fat fries, here we come. 601 S. Clinton St., 410-522-2929

Next week, six local restaurants are supporting the cause by incorporating mulberries into their menus. Swing by Harmony Bakery and Dovecote Cafe for mulberry pastries, grab mulberry waffles at Cafe Jovial in Pigtown, and head to Atwater’s for mulberry jam.
With citywide destinations including Woodberry Kitchen, Artifact Coffee, Parts & Labor, and Bird in Hand, James Beard Award-winning chef Spike Gjerde already dominates a good portion of the local dining scene. And a new al fresco hangout coming soon to Beatty Development’s Harbor Point site will significantly increase the restaurateur’s reach.

“We already feed a lot of people,” says Corey Polyoka, managing partner of Gjerde’s restaurant group Foodshed. “But this space nearly doubles that footprint.”

Sandlot—a harbor-front oasis slated to open Memorial Day Weekend—encompasses 30,000 square feet of open space to be used for outdoor dining, recreation, live performances, family-friendly games, and community outreach events.

The spot is part of Beatty Development’s up-and-coming Harbor Point project on the border of Harbor East and Fells Point, which will eventually yield more than three million square feet of office, residential, retail, and hotel properties.

Polyoka says that the vision for the hub was inspired by Foodshed’s recent partnership with Beatty Development founder Michael Beatty—who was looking for a temporary concept to take over the outdoor promenade for five years while the Harbor Point peninsula continues to flourish. Eventually, the space will be transformed into a full five-acre waterfront park.

“We really enjoyed each other’s company and started to see that we had a shared vision for what we could do in Baltimore, both on the development and food sides,” Polyoka says of the partnership. “He started to see an opportunity to make a lot of this square footage available to a different kind of sourcing.”

Polyoka explains that the design was heavily influenced by city zoning, which required all structures to be portable since the space is technically considered a park: “The city wanted us to be able to pull everything away if we needed to,” he adds.

To embrace the zoning requirements, the Foodshed team came up with the idea to set up multiple shipping containers and a recycled 1968 Safari Airstream trailer to house elements including a mobile cocktail bar, ice cream and blender bar, storage rooms, and an 8×20-foot commercial kitchen complete with its own takeout window.

“The more you’re here, the more you realize, ‘This is going to be pretty big,’” says contractor Luke Steckel of Hampden’s Studios on Sisson, who has worked on a number of the Foodshed properties. “I’m always the guy that they call to do something different.”

Though menu details are not yet set in stone, the seasonal offerings (think snacks on a stick, nachos, sandwiches, smoothies, juices, and barbecued meats made on a custom rotisserie built in West Baltimore) will be streamlined by chef de cuisine Patrick Morrow and maintain Foodshed’s philosophy of supporting local producers.

“From a food and drink perspective, we wanted to give people another way to experience local food,” Polyoka says. “It’s going to be geared toward families and all Baltimoreans to come and enjoy.”

To complement the eats and drinks, the open space will also boast six professional-sized volleyball courts, three bocce courts, a tree garden with canopy lighting, climbing apparatuses for kids, beach chairs overlooking the waterfront, its own hop yard, and custom-built interactive seating for outdoor concerts and performances.

“It has kind of an island vibe,” Polyoka says. “It’s going to be a fun place to play during the summertime.”

Aside from the requisite volleyball tournaments, the site will also host community programs like sailing regattas, Fourth of July festivities, food and wine festivals, and bike parties. Sandlot will also be open for visitors to check out during the Saturday morning Fells Point Farmers’ Market, which has temporarily relocated to Harbor Point for the season while construction continues at Broadway Square.

Polyoka, a father of four, says that he’s most excited to introduce a new city gathering place that is family friendly—an aspect that has strong ties to the meaning behind the concept’s name.

“For me, Sandlot is all about remembering being young, being outside, and not taking things too seriously,” he says.
