The City and Regional Magazine Association (CRMA) recently released the list of finalists for its annual industry awards, and Baltimore magazine was honored to receive a total of 12 nominations. The magazine was recognized with nods for editorial, art, digital, and weddings coverage, as well as in the coveted General Excellence category.

For nearly four decades, more than 100 CRMA judges hailing from publications across the country—including the likes of The Atlantic and The New York Times—have selected finalists in the annual competition. This year, Baltimore is among 175 contenders that were narrowed down, in coordination with The Missouri School of Journalism, in 35 categories.

Baltimore‘s editorial team received three nominations, two of which were for work by senior editor Ron Cassie. “The Many Trials of Keith Davis Jr.”—Cassie’s investigative piece on Davis Jr.’s fight for freedom after being tried a record four times for the same murder without sustaining a conviction—was recognized in the Reporting category, while his back-page column “You Are Here,” which documents observations of life in Baltimore, was nominated for the Herb Lipson Award for Column Excellence. Senior editor Lydia Woolever received praise in the Civic Journalism category for her story, “Turning Tides,” which examines the Eastern Shore’s reckoning with its racist past.

Creative director Amanda White-Iseli clinched a Spread Design nod for her work on “Lamar,” senior contributor Corey McLaughlin’s profile of the Ravens’ superstar quarterback Lamar Jackson. Finalists in the Feature Design award included White-Iseli’s work on last year’s “America in Miniature” (by Ron Cassie) and “Dining Awards” (by Jane Marion) service packages. Additionally, the association commended our “RoFO Nation” love letter to Royal Farms by naming it a finalist for best use of Illustrations and Graphics. The art team, which also includes assistant art director Alicia Corman and production manager Jon Timian, was especially proud to receive a nomination for Cover Excellence, which specifically praises our June, August, and October covers.

Under the stewardship of managing editor Janelle Erlichman Diamond and art director Staci Lanham, Baltimore Weddings took home a nod in the Ancillary: Weddings category.

On the digital side, Baltimore’s daily website was recognized for Excellence Online. Digital senior editor Lauren Cohen and contributing digital designer Aaron Hope were also pleased to have been given a nomination for Multiplatform Storytelling, honoring Woolever’s piece, “Crab Country,” a deep-dive into the world of crabbing on the Chesapeake Bay.

Last, but certainly not least, the magazine’s entire staff was acknowledged with a nomination in the prestigious General Excellence category for the third consecutive year. As always, Baltimore is honored to be included among such distinguished colleagues in the national publishing industry—knowing that we could not have been recognized without the support of this city.

Judges named five finalists in each category and will announce the final winners at CRMA’s conference in St. Louis this May.

Last night, media executives representing all sectors of the multi-platform publishing industry gathered at the annual Folio Awards gala in New York City. For more than 25 years, Folio has recognized uncompromising journalism and excellence in design with its Eddie (editorial) and Ozzie (design) awards.

Once again, Baltimore magazine was honored to be nominated in a number of categories by Folio’s panel of judges, which narrowed a pool of 2,500 entries down to roughly 1,100 finalists in 33 sections. This year, the magazine took home six wins, including Editor of the Year, Immersive/Interactive Storytelling, Single Article, Consumer Website, Use of Video, and Supplemental Annual or One-Shot.

“I’m just so proud of my Baltimore magazine family,” says Baltimore’s editor-in-chief Max Weiss. “These awards are truly a testament to the entire Baltimore staff and to this wonderful town we get to live in and write about.”

Senior editor Lydia Woolever took home Folio’s esteemed Editor of the Year award, having spearheaded multiple feature packages and cover stories throughout the year. Among them were “Are We Still Charm City?,” cannabis guide “A New Leaf,” and “The Shape of Water,” the story of an intrepid group of Chesapeake Bay boat builders which won Folio’s Single Article award.

“This is a surreal honor,” Woolever said during her acceptance speech at the Hilton Midtown. “It has been the honor of my career thus far to be able to cover our underdog city and small state. We have so many stories in Baltimore, so much history, art, hardship, resilience, and hope, but most of all it comes down to the people. Every day, we take that privilege and responsibility very seriously.”

In addition, the magazine’s digital efforts received honors for Consumer Website, which praised our editorial content online, and Use of Video, a nod to former audience engagement manager Meredith Herzing and former digital editor Jess Mayhugh. Particular recognition was given to their videos that expanded our print content by visually capturing the compelling stories of 133-year-old Simon’s Bakery and longtime local swimming instructor Marvin Thorpe.

For Best Immersive/Interactive Storytelling, Baltimore magazine was recognized for the web design of “Let’s Do Brunch,” “The Shape of Water,” and “A New Leaf,” in which contributing digital designer Aaron Hope brought the print pieces to life online through use of photography, video, and infographics.

Lastly, the newly rebranded Baltimore Weddings took home the award for best Supplemental Annual or One-Shot publication under the stewardship of managing editor Janelle Diamond and art director Staci Lanham.

In total, Baltimore magazine was nominated for a record-high of 16 awards, including the prestigious Magazine of the Year award. The magazine, as always, was honored to be included among such distinguished colleagues in the national publishing industry—knowing that we could not have been recognized without the support of this city and the people of Baltimore.

“We don’t do it for the awards, but it sure feels good to get this kind of recognition,” said Baltimore magazine’s president Michael Teitelbaum. “It is an honor to work with such incredible talent. With passion and commitment, our team works hard to produce content that inspires Baltimore to discover more, do more, and be more.”

Lastly, best E-Newsletter went to Baltimore’s digital department, who produces Arts District, a bi-monthly compilation of local arts, culture, and events coverage that CRMA called a “notable commitment to diversity.”

On Tuesday, the City and Regional Magazine Association (CRMA) announced that Baltimore magazine received 12 nominations in its annual industry awards, the most the publication has received in the competition’s 34-year history.

More than 100 judges from national publications around the country—in coordination with the University of Missouri School of Journalism—helped to choose finalists in 35 categories including editorial, design, digital, and general excellence.

Baltimore magazine’s feature story “The Shape of Water” (October 2018), about an intrepid group of boat builders on the Eastern Shore, nearly swept the competition. Senior editor Lydia Woolever was nominated for Feature Story; creative director Amanda White-Iseli, photographer Justin Tsucalas, and production manager Jon Timian were nominated for Feature Design; and digital production designer Aaron Hope and digital editor Jess Mayhugh were nominated for Multi-Platform Storytelling.

The magazine’s art department is especially proud today to receive additional nominations in Spread Design for “The Great Mancini” (April 2018), “Fancy Footwork” (September 2018), and “The Reign of Spain” (December 2018) and Feature Design for “Let’s Do Brunch.” (October 2018). These awards recognized creative director Amanda White-Iseli, assistant art director Danielle Dernoga, production manager Jon Timian, and photographers Mike Morgan, Justin Tsucalas, and Scott Suchman.

Additional nominations included “The (Every) Body Issue” (January 2018) for Special Issue, “How To Throw the Perfect Crab Feast” (July 2018) for Food or Dining package, and “Can H-Town Kick Its Habit?” (July 2018) for Civic Journalism. Editors Ron Cassie, Lauren LaRocca, and Jane Marion spearheaded those packages.

On the digital side, Baltimore magazine was recognized for its Online Column “Baby on Board” in which contributing writer Megan Isennock shares funny and poignant tales from parenthood. Lastly, “Arts District,” a bi-monthly compilation of the magazine’s arts and culture content that is deployed by digital content producer Michelle Evans, was nominated for E-Newsletter.

Judges named five finalists in each category and will announce the ultimate winners at CRMA’s annual conference in Minneapolis in May 2019.

Baltimore magazine was honored to once again be nominated at the Folio Awards, which recognizes stunning design and uncompromising journalism in the publishing world. For more than 20 years, the Folio has been handing out both Eddie (editorial) and Ozzie (design) awards across all sectors of the industry.

This year, a panel of more than 300 judges narrowed down 2,500 entries into a pool of 800 finalists. We were honored last night to receive three Folio Awards for Best Full Issue, Best Immersive/Interactive Storytelling, and Best Use of Typography.

The Best Full Issue honors were given to our January 2018 cover story “The (Every) Body Issue,” in which editor Jane Marion spearheaded a deep dive into our relationship with our bodies including a stunning photo shoot, a look into the only male cheerleading squad in the NFL, a batch of personal essays, and profiles on people sharing their transgender stories.

For Best Immersive/Interactive Storytelling, Baltimore magazine was recognized for its work in the online design of “This Is What Activism Looks Like,” “50 Best Restaurants,” and “Old Faithful,” in which digital production designer Aaron Hope brought the print pieces to life online through video, audio, and compelling graphic design.

Best Use of Typography went to Baltimore’s design team for the April 2018 feature spread of “The Great Mancini.” Creative director Amanda White-Iseli commissioned illustrator Tobias Saul to create typography that harkened back to the days of 19th-century magicians for the profile on Baltimore Oriole Trey Mancini.

In all, Baltimore magazine was nominated for a total of 12 awards in categories like Writer of the Year, Design Team of the Year, Investigative Journalism, Podcast, and Video Series. The magazine, as always, was honored to be included among such prestigious company.

Every year, local magazines from around the country gather at the City Regional Magazine Association (CRMA) conference to share ideas, network with peers, and award the best of the best in the industry.

On Monday night, June 4, CRMA members gathered for an award ceremony at the Downtown Marriott in New Orleans to honor the best in editorial, design, and digital work from 2017. Baltimore magazine earned eight finalist nominations: one nomination for Civic Journalism, one nomination for Special Issue, one nomination for Spread Design, two nominations for Feature Design, one nomination for Ancillary: Weddings, one nominations for Multiplatform Storytelling, and one for E-Newsletters.

We are thrilled to announce that Baltimore took top honors for Feature Design with its July 2017 story “Cake Walk” about the 25 best places for crab cakes in the area, which was designed by creative director Amanda White-Iseli, photographed by Scott Suchman, with lettering by Tobias Saul and illustrations by Nana Rausch. The story was edited by food and dining editor Jane Marion.

“This design presents a lot of information in an engaging and accessible way,” CRMA judges said about the feature design. “The weathered sign uses fun type and imagery to set the tone and invite readers in. Repeating the wooden background ties the feature together nicely.”

Of course, Baltimore was also honored to be nominated in Spread Design for “The Great Outdoors” with art direction by White-Iseli and illustrations by Eleanor Grosch. In addition, “All The Right Moves,” also art directed by White-Iseli, was nominated for Spread Design. In the editorial categories, “Tomorrowland” written by senior Ron Cassie was nominated for Civic Journalism and “How Baltimore Invented the Modern World,” also edited by Cassie, was nominated for Special Issue. The Spring/Summer 2017 edition of Baltimore Bride, edited by Janelle Diamond and designed by Staci Lanham, was nominated in the category of Ancillary: Weddings.

In the digital category, “This Is What Activism Looks Like,” was nominated for Multiplatform Storytelling with design by digital production designer Aaron Hope, photography and videos by former director of photography David Colwell, and video by audience engagement manager Meredith Herzing and former intern Charlie Knott. Baltimore was also nominated for its E-Newsletter “Local Flavor,” which is deployed by digital content coordinator Michelle Harris.

On Monday night, May 22, CRMA members gathered for an award ceremony at the Hilton Americas Hotel in Houston, which honors the best in editorial, design, and digital work from 2016. Baltimore magazine earned five finalist nominations: two nominations for Spread Design, two nominations for Multiplatform Storytelling, and one for Feature Design.

We are thrilled to announce that Baltimore took top honors for Spread Design with our October 2016 story “A Wonderful Dream” about artist Amy Sherald, which was designed by art director Amanda White-Iseli, photographed by Christopher Myers, and included lettering by Refinery 43 studio. The story was written by arts and culture editor Gabriella Souza.

“From the dress to the background of the photo to the letter forms, every detail is beautifully considered,” the CRMA judges said about the spread. “The integration of the design and the photo is arresting and seamless—a difficult balance that succeeds.”

In addition, Baltimore won for best Feature Design for the May 2016 story “Happy Trails” about the best hiking and biking adventures in the region, which was designed by art director Amanda White-Iseli with illustrations from Irene Diamente, lettering by Simon Walker, and maps by former assistant art director Stephanie Shafer. The package was written by senior editor Ron Cassie.

“This outdoor guide assembles a mix of hiking and biking adventures wrapped in a compelling layout,” the judges said about “Happy Trails.” Although packed to the hilt, the design is easy to follow. The stunning photography and spare illustrations come together with an unexpected impact.”

Of course, Baltimore was also honored to be nominated in Spread Design for “Magic Surrounds Her” with design by art director Amanda White-Iseli, illustration by Tran Nguyen, and writing by Jennifer Mendelsohn. In addition, two stories were nominated for Multiplatform Storytelling—which looks at both the print and digital versions of feature stories—with “Multi-Modal City” and “Watch This Space,” which were both designed by former digital designer Craig Forbes and featured videos by photographer Justin Tsucalas and director of photography David Colwell, respectively.

“This fresh story highlighting self-made spaces of Baltimore artists works well in print and online,” the judges said about “Watch This Space,” written by arts and culture editor Gabriella Souza. “The videos, slideshow, and additional content—like the fall arts editor’s picks—adds additional dimension on the web.”

Every year, the cream of the crop in the magazine industry gather at the Folio Awards in New York City to recognize the best editorial content, design, and digital products in the field.

On Monday, October 31, Baltimore magazine was awarded with five awards in both the Eddie (editorial) and Ozzie (design) categories.

The magazine’s website won for best Use of Video, with particular recognition given to our video chronicling the history and current operations of family business Otterbein’s Bakery (beating national titles including People and Glamour). In addition, Baltimoremagazine.com won for best Consumer Regional Website for its editorial content.

Another honor was given to our ancillary title Baltimore Bride for its design, which includes photo shoots, feature designs, and uses of illustration for the yearly wedding magazine. Bride’s managing editor is Janelle Diamond and art director Staci Lanham.

Baltimore‘s design team also won for best Use of Typography for the Tochterman’s-inspired treatment on the feature spread of “Big Fish,” which profiled the life story of legendary fly fisherman Lefty Kreh. The lettering was done by Tobias Saul and design by art director Amanda White-Iseli.

Lastly, in a particularly special moment, Baltimore food editor and longtime writerJane Marion was honored for Editor of the Year, ousting other chiefs at Women’s Health, Redbook, AARP, and Hearst Digital Media.

“I’m speechless,” Marion said at the podium inside Hilton Midtown. “I just feel so lucky to work with such an incredible staff every day.”
