Baltimore Magazine Wins Three CRMA Awards

Publication takes home honors for editorial, design, and digital at the annual industry awards.

Baltimore magazine took home three awards at the 34th annual National City and Regional Magazine Awards (CRMA) announced on May 20 at the association’s annual conference, this year held in Minnesota’s Twin Cities.

The Civic Journalism award went to Baltimore senior editor Ron Cassie and contributing writer Lauren LaRocca, whose piece “Can H-Town Kick Its Habit?” provided a sobering look at the opioid epidemic in Hagerstown. CRMA judges said “this superb features fuses eloquent writing, deep reporting, and excellent photography into a memorable package.”

Fancy Footwork

Additionally, Baltimore creative director Amanda White-Iseli, contributing photographer Mike Morgan, and production manager Jon Timian were awarded best Spread Design for “Fancy Footwork,” a profile on former Ravens running back Alex Collins and his love of Irish dance. CRMA judges said: “The photography, typography, and illustration play nicely off one another to create an engaging layout that speaks to the headline of the story. The active and rhythmic feel of the spread’s design successfully conveys the idea of footwork and movement.”

Lastly, best E-Newsletter went to Baltimore’s digital department, who produces Arts District, a bi-monthly compilation of local arts, culture, and events coverage that CRMA called a “notable commitment to diversity.”

In all, Baltimore magazine was honored to be a finalist in 12 distinct categories—the most in the publication’s history—including Feature Story, Food and Dining Feature Package, Feature Design, Special Issue, Online Column, and Multi-Platform Storytelling.
