Baltimore magazine was honored to once again be nominated at the Folio Awards, which recognizes stunning design and uncompromising journalism in the publishing world. For more than 20 years, the Folio has been handing out both Eddie (editorial) and Ozzie (design) awards across all sectors of the industry.
This year, a panel of more than 300 judges narrowed down 2,500 entries into a pool of 800 finalists. We were honored last night to receive three Folio Awards for Best Full Issue, Best Immersive/Interactive Storytelling, and Best Use of Typography.
The Best Full Issue honors were given to our January 2018 cover story “The (Every) Body Issue,” in which editor Jane Marion spearheaded a deep dive into our relationship with our bodies including a stunning photo shoot, a look into the only male cheerleading squad in the NFL, a batch of personal essays, and profiles on people sharing their transgender stories.
For Best Immersive/Interactive Storytelling, Baltimore magazine was recognized for its work in the online design of “This Is What Activism Looks Like,” “50 Best Restaurants,” and “Old Faithful,” in which digital production designer Aaron Hope brought the print pieces to life online through video, audio, and compelling graphic design.
Best Use of Typography went to Baltimore’s design team for the April 2018 feature spread of “The Great Mancini.” Creative director Amanda White-Iseli commissioned illustrator Tobias Saul to create typography that harkened back to the days of 19th-century magicians for the profile on Baltimore Oriole Trey Mancini.
In all, Baltimore magazine was nominated for a total of 12 awards in categories like Writer of the Year, Design Team of the Year, Investigative Journalism, Podcast, and Video Series. The magazine, as always, was honored to be included among such prestigious company.
