Mike Boggs is a jack of all trades, having worked as a general manager at Red Maple, a bartender at Baltimore Soundstage, and a DJ—nickname Mike Jointz—at various clubs around town. But Boggs, who studied cooking at Baltimore International College, had never been able to call himself a restaurant owner, until now. Last October, Boggs and his wife, Erin, opened Cheezy Mike’s Food Emporium, a place for gut-busting comfort food inside Mt. Vernon Marketplace.

“We wanted to open something to see what would happen,” says Boggs.

What has happened is that on any given day a line forms for the cheesesteak egg rolls, pretzel bites, and grilled cheese with pomegranate molasses at the small stall where everything is made from scratch out of the 257-square-foot kitchen.

“I had a lot of anxiety about opening a business during a pandemic,” says Boggs, “but I’m very glad we did it. Things are definitely working out— we’re on a roll.”

Why did you decide to open Cheezy Mike’s?
It got started back when I was a GM at Red Maple. I worked there for 10-plus years, and I got to know a lot of people. Around my birthday, I’d spontaneously throw a get-together at my house, because we worked hard and didn’t always leave time to have fun. I’d have these massive cookouts and cook 10 different things. My food was delicious, and people still talk about it to this day. I’ve been cooking since I was 16. I just wanted to show off my talents.

What’s the concept?
This is late-night comfort food. Usually, that kind of food is medium to average. We wanted to elevate that kind of food and have the same prices but high quality.

Tell me about your signature item, the cheesesteak eggroll.
Sullivan’s Steakhouse had their version of a cheesesteak eggroll back in the day and I wanted to do my own version of it. We slow-roast top-round beef overnight, then slice it once it’s cold and add Pepper Jack cheese and onions. It melts in your mouth. It’s basically like eating a five-ounce filet. We’ve sold more than 2,600 of them since we opened.

Is there any connection between food and music?
Absolutely, there’s a connection. When people eat, you see them do their happy dance—you want music to go with that.

How does Cheezy Mike’s fit into Baltimore’s culinary scene?
We are a Black-owned business and Baltimore’s demographic is almost 75 percent Black. Black businesses are very encouraged now. We are very happy for the support. As a Black-owned business, I want to be one of those pioneers to bring more to the food scene in Baltimore.

Ministry of Brewing: Over the summer, we gave you a sneak peek at this new beer destination that has taken shape inside St. Michael’s Church in Upper Fells Point. Though locals were keeping their fingers crossed that the brewery would officially open last weekend, final inspections were still underway. But, to give antsy beer lovers a first taste at their signature brews, Ministry has taken over three taps at Canton’s Hudson Street Stackhouse with its “Wispy” hazy pale ale, “The Point” Czech pilsner, and “Old Maude” English brown ale. As for the actual space, the team is eager to open as soon as all the loose ends are tied up—which could be any day now.

Ekiben: The rumors are true. This week, Ekiben owners Steve Chu and Ephrem Abebe gave fans of their famous steamed bun sandwiches an early holiday present by confirming what the local food scene has been speculating for weeks now. Come early 2020, the Fells Point favorite will open a second eatery on the Avenue in Hampden. In a video posted to Instagram, the owners officially announced the new location that is reportedly taking over the former TigerStyle space in the alley behind Avenue Kitchen and Bar. The beloved Asian-fusion concept, which got its start at the Fells Point farmers’ market in 2014, has made a name for itself in the local dining scene—and beyond—for its staples like the Thai chicken meatballs, Taiwanese curry fried chicken, tofu nuggets in spicy peanut sauce, and tempura broccoli. Here’s hoping all of the signature dishes, and Ekiben’s frequent food collaborations, will carry over in the new space.

Neo Pizza: Signage recently spotted above the former AJ’s Deli stall at Mount Vernon Marketplace indicates that this Maryland pizza chain—which has locations in Bel Air and Annapolis—will be opening in the space in the coming months. Neo Pizza specializes in wood-fired pies, craft beer, and worldly wines. Its current locations also offer smaller plates like meatballs and fried calamari, as well as salads, burgers, and club sandwiches. The communal market, which highlights everything from dumplings and charcuterie to Indian bowls and Greek fare, hasn’t seen a pizza spot since Cocina Al Volo closed earlier this year.

CH-CH CHANGES

Sorrento of Arbutus: For more than 50 years, this neighborhood haunt has been the place to go for a quality slice in Arbutus. Owner Ella Kostinsky recently took to Facebook to announce that, although the restaurant will be sticking around for generations to come, she is planning to retire and pass the torch. “Change is inevitable and important in order to grow, and bring innovation within our community,” Kostinsky wrote. “I am excited to begin the next chapter in my life, and just as excited for the next chapter of Sorrentos.” In her message, she thanks longtime customers for their support, and assures that the new owner—who has more than 40 years of experience in the food business—will be preserving the spot’s name and secret pizza recipe. “I feel confident the new owner will grow the restaurant,” she said. “and that it will become even bigger and better.”

12/28: Battle of the Birdland Wing Festival

Back in its fourth year, this celebration of all things wings is taking over Delia Foley’s in Federal Hill this weekend. The price of admission includes two drink tickets, a bottomless wing buffet, live music, and cash bar specials from 12-4 p.m. But the main events are the wing-eating contests—the first of which will be a race to see who can demolish 30 wings in the shortest span of time. The following “Hellhound Challenge,” which unsurprisingly requires a waiver, will crown the first eater who finishes 10 flaming-hot wings in a sauce that clocks in at a base of 9 million Scolvill units—which are used to measure pungency.

2/23-25: The Charmery Presents Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

We know, we know—February feels like a lifetime away. But The Charmery’s full-sensory movie showings tend to sell out quickly, so this is one to have on your radar early. The ice cream factory at Union Collective has previously hosted screenings of films including The Princess Bride and Elf with accompanying themed treats, and now it’s transforming into a Hogwarts-themed wonderland. See the first movie in the Harry Potter franchise like you’ve never experienced it before with a self-served popcorn bar, special punch, and other treats that correlate with scenes in the movie. $30

It was in 2011 that Ferhat Yalçin opened Fishnet in College Park in hopes of exposing Marylanders to the street food experience of his native Turkey. The staple of this culinary culture is the fish sandwich, typically grilled and served with a choice of sauces. Through the years, Fishnet’s menu centered around this foundation and blossomed into offering more mains, appetizers, salads, and desserts. Thanks to the popularity of his original restaurant, chef Yalçin recently opened a sister spot at Mount Vernon Marketplace.

The food stall format invites a streamlined approach for Fishnet, and absent are many of the main courses and salads on offer in College Park. Fishnet Baltimore focuses on what made the first location successful—fish sandwiches, as well as a few other sea-centric specialties. On our visit, there was plenty of high-top seating available for our crew to settle in and decide what to eat. It was hot that day, and the first priority was a round of refreshing fresh-squeezed lemonade. Once our thirst was slaked, it was time to tame our appetites.

We began with an order of crab dip and Tots N’ Tentacles.The dip was generously crabby, held together by enough filler, which enabled us to really pile it on the house-made corn chips. Rich and flavorful, it was an instant hit and disappeared in minutes. Tots N’ Tentacles was a ragtag mix of fried calamari, fries, and fried fish morsels served in a basket. The calamari went first, and we made swift work of the accompanying house-made Old Bay mayo, which packed plenty of that seafood spice goodness in a deliciously tangy dip. The grilled salmon sandwich was an exercise in simplicity, served on a sesame-seed bun with lettuce and tomato. You get to choose your sauce, and we couldn’t help but return to the Old Bay mayo.

Our order of fish and chips was exemplary and exactly as it should be prepared: a flaky, light, crispy piece of catfish, but not soaked in cooking fat. A Baja fish wrap was satisfyingly piquant, and the garlic cream sauce gave it a savory twist. Our avocado salad was slightly less successful only because the avocado could have used another couple of days to ripen. We can’t fault the generous amount of it, nor the size of this salad. Moreover, the dressing was a zingy combination of lime juice and olive oil, providing an electric lift to the greens and imparting a lightness that would have been drowned by a creamy dressing. There was just one dessert available on our visit, a Nutella mousse. After a few spoonfuls, we had to get out before we ordered another, and another.

We are glad to see Fishnet come to Baltimore, and its street food aesthetic is a perfect fit for Mount Vernon Marketplace. If it works there, we’d love to see a sit-down restaurant, akin to the one in College Park, migrate to our city, too.

Crust by Mack: Chef Amanda Mack’s beloved baked goods have been added to the lineup of local eats that will be offered inside Hampden’s Whitehall Food Market when it opens later this year. After nearly two years of focusing solely on pop-ups and deliveries, Mack will set up shop inside the communal space to serve her sweet-and-savory hand pies (think everything from cherry almond to the “Bmore Crust” filled with jumbo lump crab meat), as well as cinnamon rolls and a Baltimore-inspired chocolate chip cookie made with brown butter and Old Bay. “It’s so Baltimore, but then it’s also that classic chocolate chip cookie that everybody dreams of,” she says, also mentioning brunch pastries that will be paired with Champagne and bellinis. In keeping with Mack’s social justice philosophy, she is looking forward to hosting community gatherings and speaker series in the market’s designated events space. “It’s the perfect location,” she says. “I’m excited to be around other like-minded people and collaborate with some of my favorite brands.”

THB Neighborhood Bagelry + Deli: Since opening its flagship in Towson 20 years ago, THB has expanded into three other neighborhoods and served more than 52 million bagels to the Baltimore community at large. To celebrate its big birthday, the deli is widening its footprint yet again—this time to Howard County. A fifth shop at Columbia Crossing is slated to open this winter, highlighting THB’s signature breakfast sandwiches, wraps, salads, and paninis.

Pizza di Joey: The footlong “monster” slices from this roving pizza truck have finally found a permanent home inside Cross Street Market. Owner Joey Vanoni debuted a brick-and-mortar stall inside the renovated market last weekend, just in time for the Ravens home opener. Stop by the stall—or the attached take-out window that is open until 12 a.m. on Saturdays for revelers in Federal Hill—for wood-fired slices topped with everything from pepperoni and mozzarella to barbecue chicken and lump crab. Pizza di Joey joins newly opened spots Rice Crook, Annoula’s Kitchen, and Gangster Vegan in the revitalized property, which is expected to be fully leased by spring 2020.

Le Comptoir du Vin Ranked Best in the Country by Bon Appetit: The fastidious food editors at Bon Appetit magazine narrowed their list of the 50 Best New Restaurants in the country down to 10 this week, and local diners were ecstatic to see that beloved French bistro Le Comptoir du Vin made the cut. Coming in at No. 8 on the list of the top newcomers in America, the Station North spot was praised for its chicken liver pâté, hand-cut steak tartare, and fresh-baked breads.

“The food is not even really what Le Comptoir is about,” writes editor Julia Kramer. “It’s about having a place where you feel immediately welcomed…a place where you just wanna hang out, as golden hour fades, hoping the night never ends.” We couldn’t agree more. In response to the award, co-owners Will Mester and Rosemary Liss took to Instagram to thank their team, Bon Appetit, and the city as a whole: “We love this city and are so proud to be here,” reads the post. “Thank you Baltimore for your love and support.”

9/20-22: Mount Vernon Marketplace Turns 4
In the four years since Mount Vernon Marketplace debuted on Park Avenue, we’ve seen OG vendors like The Local Oyster, Cultured, Pinch Dumplings, and Taps Filling Station cement their place in the local dining landscape. And, along the way, the market has welcomed exciting new concepts like Indibowl, Mr. Souvlaki, and Fishnet. In celebration of the food hall’s four-year anniversary this weekend, all of the stalls will be running individual specials. Be on the lookout for $5 milkshakes and orders of fries at Between 2 Buns, $5 rice bowls and $10 soju bottles at Brown Rice, and a “Five Buck Birthday Cup”—which tops a sweet cream base with Oreos and birthday sprinkles—at Roll Bmore.

9/23: Farm to Chef Maryland
In honor of its 10th anniversary, this culinary competition benefitting local nonprofit TasteWise Kids is back and bigger than ever. Nearly 30 chefs—including Stefano Porcile of Orto, Jesse Sandlin of The Outpost American Tavern, Mark Levy of Magdalena, Doug Wetzel of Gertrude’s, and David Thomas of Ida B’s Table—will be paired with a local farm and tasked with creating a dish that showcases Baltimore’s bounty of homegrown produce. Plus, cocktail connoisseurs from the Baltimore Bartenders’ Guild will also use herbs and other ingredients from the featured farms to mix up signature beverages. Attendees will vote for their favorite eats and drinks of the night, and a portion of all proceeds will support the nonprofit’s efforts to educate kids about the origins of their food.

The Haute Dog Carte: The Mt. Washington scene lost this old standby earlier this month. Chef Daniel Raffel took to Facebook to announce that he would be shutting down his hot dog cart—stationed in a converted garage next to Bonjour Bakery on Falls Road—indefinitely. “I am humbled by the kindness, support and love from all who joined me on this fun adventure,” he wrote. “I will sign off until there is something to report.” Some of the offerings that became favorites among lunchtime regulars included the spicy Italian dog topped with onion jam and the smoked country sausage with whole grain mustard. Here’s hoping the fabulous franks stuffed inside flaky baguettes will make a comeback sometime soon.

Fishnet: Summer temperatures always tend to put us in the mood for seafood, and this new destination inside Mount Vernon Marketplace has everything you need to quell your cravings. The College Park staple recently debuted its second location inside the food hall, and its hosting an official grand opening party on July 12 from 4-7 p.m. to celebrate. The menu offers locally caught fish dishes including fried salmon croquettes, tempura-battered catfish and chips, and Baja fish wraps with citrus slaw and garlic sour cream. There are also nods to chef/owner Ferhat Yalçin’s upbringing in Istanbul, where fisherman grill their catch and make it into a sandwich within minutes of pulling it from the sea. Yalçin’s versions of the delicacy—called “Balik Ekmek” in Turkish—include a Faroe Island-grilled salmon sandwich and a local catfish version topped with baby greens and tomatoes.

Walker’s Tap & Table: Downtown diners (and Hippodrome theatregoers) may remember chef Chad Wells’ innovative dishes at Alewife. During his six-year stint at the now-closed beer bar, Wells became known for his wild boar sliders and pork belly mac-and- cheese fries—which were featured on Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. He later moved on to work with the Columbia-based Victoria Restaurant Group, and now, Wells is attached to a new project in his native Howard County. He’s set to head up the kitchen at Walker’s Tap & Table, a seasonal spot slated to open this fall. The menu will feature farm-to-fork fare and scratch-made pizzas fired in the restaurant’s own brick oven. The eatery joins newer concepts including The Turn House and The Brewer’s Art Tavern in the Howard County dining scene.

Ekiben Gives Back: We’d be remiss without giving a shout out to the food scene’s favorite steamed bun superheroes this week. Ekiben owners Steve Chu and Ephrem Abebe recently set up shop at the abandoned Old Town Mall in East Baltimore to serve free Neighborhood Bird sandwiches (Taiwanese curry fried chicken thigh topped with spicy sambal mayo, pickles, and fresh herbs) to those in need, as well as passersby. The goodwill initiative is one of many that the Korean fusion restaurant has organized to bolster its mission of giving back to the community. One recent effort has included running a pop-up with Cocina Luchadoras’ Rosalyn Vera after she was the victim of a hate crime.

Sundays Makes its Return: Two years ago, fans of Dooby’s in Mt. Vernon were delighted to learn that owner Phil Han would be opening a doughnut spinoff inside Cross Street Market in Federal Hill. Though the pop-up stall was short lived (it closed after the renovation efforts at the market began), it made its marks with chocolate-topped Berger Cookie and New York bagel-flavored doughnuts. This weekend, Sundays is making its return with a one-day pop-up at Han’s Fat Tiger bar in Broadway Market. Starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 13, the team will serve Boston Cream, Coconut Espresso, and Blueberry Ginger Meringue doughnuts until sell out. Pair the fried favorites with Fat Tiger’s signature coffee drinks and egg sandwiches for a fulfilling—and filling—mid-morning meal.

7/14: No-Fun Brunch

Don’t let the name deter you. This booze-free, plant-based brunch is designed for families to enjoy something a little more holistic on their Sunday off. Head to Vent Coffee Roasters to enjoy CBD-infused coffee and health-focused drinks from Baltimore’s own “health-tender” Amie Ward. Of course, there will also be a full-blown brunch menu to pair with the drinks. Chefs from Tom Cat’s Kitchen will prepare vegan dishes such as jackfruit-and-potato hash, Wisconsin grits with crispy onions, watermelon salad with marinated tofu, and maple plantains.

TO 7/31: Crustacean Invasion at Mt. Washington Tavern
To commemorate Maryland’s signature summer dish, this Mt. Washington haunt has created an entire crab-inspired menu running through July. The à la carte list includes a crab and avocado stack, a crabmeat grilled cheese, classic Chicken Chesapeake, crab imperial, and a crab and parmesan-crusted rockfish filet. Grab a drink and head up to the top-level bar to get the full summer experience.

This communal food hall is one of our favorite places to grab grub in Mt. Vernon, but with a wide range of tasty offerings, it can be hard to choose between options like sandwiches from Cultured and homemade soup from Prescription Chicken. Thankfully, their $5-vendor deal returns this Friday with one-day specials like chicken souvlaki with pita and tzatziki from Mr. Souvlaki, Nutella crepes from Crepes by Mina, shucked oysters from The Local Oyster, and black bean burgers from Big Bean Theory. Even Taps Fill Station, their zero-waste bar, is pouring out glasses of beer and wine for only a fiver each.

It’s officially been a year since brothers Ken and Matt Praay opened the doors to their Highlandtown brewery, and they’re celebrating its first birthday with local bands, food, and even anniversary T-shirts and glassware. April 22: Odyssey: Jack Whitten Sculpture

Beginning this Sunday, The Baltimore Museum of Art will display the first exhibition dedicated to sculptures by the late Jack Whitten, a renowned contemporary artist who has become a major influencer of emerging African-American artists. Though he’s largely known for his powerful paintings and mixed-media work, this collection uncovers 40 of his sculptures inspired by African, Minoan, and Cycladic art and carved from materials like wood, marble, copper, and bone. At this opening celebration, enjoy an afternoon of wood assemblages and marble-carving demos, musical performances by saxophonist Sarah Hughes and Sypros Koliavasalis and his trio, as well as discussions led by Odyssey curator Katy Siegel and associate curator of African Art Kevin Tervala.

We can hardly wait for the return of WTMD’s First Thursdays concert series in two weeks, but until then, their annual Brews & Bands event will have enough homegrown talent and all-you-can-taste beers to keep us at bay. This Saturday, head to the Towson studio to hear Arty Hill and the Long Gone Daddys’ twangy tunes along with the Hall Williams Band’s uplifting roots-funk-jazz combo. Get a solid day-buzz on this sunny afternoon with unlimited tastings from 16 local brewers including Heavy Seas, The Brewers Art, and Peabody Heights, plus afternoon eats from Cunningham’s and The Local Oyster.

Since taking over the former factory on Fort Avenue two years ago, Diamondback Brewing Company has filled thousands of glasses and growlers with its best-selling Green Machine IPA. This Saturday, during the brewery’s “greenest” event of the year, they’ll release the Greener Machine, an imperial version of the original, and Cold Taxi, a zwickelbier inspired by old-world lagers, while relishing in some spring fest fun. Spend the day in Locust Point noshing on El Gringo’s tacos and Smoke’s BBQ, listening to live music by The High and Wides and Ampersand Stringband, and—if you’re feeling brave—gulping down two tacos, one Choco Taco, and 16 ounces of Cold Taxi beer in an eating competition.

As much as Alan Morstein loves his brick-and-mortar baby on Light Street, he’s eager to get back to his roots and pivot in a new direction.

“It seems like I do something for 15 years, and then I have to move on and do something else,” he says. “I have to stay motivated.”

Earlier this year, Morstein announced that he would be putting his Federal Hill restaurant Regi’s American Bistro up for sale. The neighborhood staple opened in 1978, and Morstein took over ownership in 2002. Though he is still in the process of finding a buyer (Morstein says he has two meetings set for next week), an official closing date has been set for Saturday, April 7.

The restaurant is offering a number of specials during its final days, including its last brunch on Easter Sunday and longtime chef Ben Troast returning to the kitchen for closing night.

“It’s a tremendous loss, but it’s just time,” Morstein says. “I feel like I’ve done everything I can do here, from having bees on the roof and growing my own vegetables, to grilling pit beef and lighting fireplaces. It’s time for me to move on and try something new.”

Though the location of his next venture will be new for Morstein, the concept is one that he happens to be very familiar with. He has signed a letter of intent to open a classic deli inside Mount Vernon Marketplace, and is in the process of negotiating a lease for a stall in the communal space. If all goes well, the eatery—conveniently dubbed Alan’s Deli—could be up and running as soon as this summer.

The spot will harken back to the first Alan’s Deli location that Morstein ran in Ocean City more than 35 years ago. He later moved to Baltimore and opened a similar concept inside the now-demolished Owings Mills Mall.    

“Those are my roots,” he says. “I cut my teeth in deli food.”

In anticipation of the new spot, Morstein has already begun pickling his own vegetables. He also plans to do his own meat roasting and smoking on site, and hand-slice all of the breads.

“I’m always into the theatrical aspect of things,” he says, mentioning that part of the charm of operating a stall in the marketplace is that patrons can see their dishes being prepared.

Aside from regular lunch service, Morstein also hopes to offer a brunch menu with fresh bagels and omelets on the weekends. With options like half-sized corned beef and pastrami sandwiches, the menu’s goal is to further the tasting philosophy of the market.

“The whole point of going to the market is to graze,” he says. “I love the communal vibe. Each person goes on their own little mission and brings back food for everybody to pass around and share. That’s part of the allure of going there.”

Though Morstein says that moving on from Regi’s is bittersweet, he is looking forward to his next chapter.

“People always say that there is crime in the city and that’s why restaurants aren’t doing well,” he says. “But there’s crime everywhere. If the crime is so bad than how do you justify a place like Mount Vernon Marketplace kicking ass? It’s a great spot with such a cool vibe. I’m excited to be a part of it.”

For three days, you can grab some gear, network with players, watch an indoor game, or hone your own skills at one of the weekend’s many workshops and clinics.

Jan. 19: Honoring Poe’s 209th Birthday

January traditions usually involve new gym memberships and a month off from drinking, but in Baltimore, that post-holiday haze is interrupted by another festive ritual: the birthday of Edgar Allan Poe. The macabre poet spent many years in Baltimore, and in the end, he was laid to rest near downtown in an area that is now helmed by the University of Maryland. This weekend at Westminster Hall and Burying Ground, hundreds of Poe fans will unite for an annual graveyard toast, featuring apple cider, readings, and the anticipation of the mysterious Poe Toaster who arrives every year on the anniversary of the poet’s birth to lay a bottle of cognac and three roses on his grave. Join in this beloved Baltimore tradition and wish a happy 209th birthday to Edgar.

One year ago this weekend, the world stood in awe as hundreds of thousands of people gathered across the planet to march in support of women. On the heels of some incredulous statements by and accusations against President Donald Trump, females, friends, and families congregated in and walked across Washington, D.C., but also New York City, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Baltimore. At least 400 marches were reported on all seven continents, creating an unforgettable moment that would unknowingly lead into a remarkable year for women, propelled forward most notably by the #MeToo movement. This Saturday, celebrate the one-year anniversary of the Women’s March and continue to stand up for women’s rights during Baltimore’s own rally, featuring notable local speakers, and a march toward McKeldin Square.

The Point in Towson: Baltimore County revelers no longer have to Uber to the city to enjoy the laid-back vibe of The Point in Fells, now that the popular watering hole has finally unveiled its second location in Towson. Set in the former home of The Crease on York Road, the chic spot features modern hanging light fixtures, exposed brick, and flat screens around every corner. The eats and drinks mimic the Fells Point flagship, with fine-tuned pub fare including moules frites and shrimp croquettes. Giada De Laurentiis Announces Horseshoe Casino Concept: A few months back, celebrity chef Giada De Laurentiis excited local foodies when she—fairly vaguely—hinted that she would be opening a restaurant in Baltimore while filming a Facebook Live video. Recently, the famed Food Network star confirmed the news, announcing that she will open a brand new eatery inside Horseshoe Casino in 2018. The Italian restaurant, whose concept has yet to be fully fleshed out, will take over the former Johnny Sanchez space on the casino’s second floor. The cantina from celebrity chefs Aaron Sanchez and John Besh shuttered its doors in September, shortly before a Times-Picayune report was published alleging sexual harassment by Besh. 1525 Russell St.

Arômes: After three years of operating this charming French dining destination in Hampden, executive chef Steve Monnier is ready to switch things up. In a post to Facebook last week, he announced that he would be closing Arômes on November 11 in order to focus on another downtown concept, Chez Hugo. Parts & Labor: Spike Gjerde’s restaurant group Foodshed is changing up the vibes at this meat-centric sister-spot. Starting on Friday, November 3, the Remington restaurant will ditch its fine-dining feel in favor of more casual sandwiches, soups, snacks, sides, and beer. The space will also reflect the relaxed atmosphere, with a new chalkboard wall and games like Ping Pong and cornhole for diners to enjoy outside near the communal firepit. One Star Country Club: Federal Hill’s casual cantina No Way Jose is now home to this bar that wants its patrons to leave it one-star reviews on Yelp. (Yes, you read that correctly.) In a time where everyone’s a critic, the concept encourages bar-goers to come see the space for themselves, rather than making a judgment based on others’ online reviews. The Elephant: Following a nationwide search, husband-and-wife owners Steven and Linda Rivelis have found an executive chef to oversee culinary operations at this Mt. Vernon mansion. They landed on Venezuelan-born chef Orlando Amaro, a Culinary Institute of Mexico grad who most recently served as executive chef of D.C. hotspot Station 4 Restaurant. Chef Amaro’s experience cooking in kitchens everywhere from Miami Beach to Venezuela will be reflected in the restaurant’s new menu of worldly dishes, which premieres on Wednesday, November 8. 924 N. Mount Vernon Marketplace has organized this fun tasting event in an effort to help diners sample all of its stalls without breaking the bank. This weekend, bounce around to taste $5 snacks from the communal food hall’s participating vendors. 11/4: Waverly Brewing Company 2nd Anniversary Party

11/6-11/12: Baltimore Food Truck Week
More than 50 local kitchens-on-wheels are gearing up for the inaugural Baltimore Food Truck Week, which will feature specials from individual trucks and a handful of community events celebrating the area’s mobile vending scene. A culminating festival will be held at Patterson Park on Friday, November 10, featuring live music, local beer and wine, and, of course, fare from local trucks.

The Room: We barely got to know this little subterranean space in Mt. Vernon, which closed for good earlier this week after owner Andre Mazelin announced that he would be exploring a new opportunity at Motor House in Station North. The spot was best known for its coffees, community events, and colorful ceiling mural by local painter Wendell “Solely Supreme” Shannon. “Together, we have played, jammed, discussed, laughed, cried, rallied and provided space for community,” Mazelin said in a farewell message posted to Facebook. “What a sweet, rollercoaster of a ride it’s been!” 800 Saint Paul St.

September 16: Baltimore Seafood Festival

Maryland and seafood go together like Old Bay and, well, pretty much anything. The crab season might be reaching its end (aka its peak), but oyster season is officially upon us, and there’s rarely a better time for rockfish. At this waterfront festival, now in its fourth year, join fellow seafood-lovers for sea-fare of all fashions, like Faidley’s crab cakes, fried oyster tacos, and the ever-classic lobster roll, plus cooking demos, live music, and activities for the kids.

Remember ParkFest, Mt. Vernon Marketplace’s first summer block party? Well, that was so last year—it’s all about Parktoberfest now. Despite the festival will still celebrate Charm City through delicious eats, lots of beer, and groovy tunes. Outside on the city streets, enjoy the cool September air and sip on Union Craft beers, as well as cocktails from Cultured, drafts from Taps Fill Station, and other local brews from throughout the marketplace. To soak up the suds, sample your way through the market’s around-the-word offerings, from Pinch’s traditional pork dumplings to the new Cucina Al Volo’s ravioli di burrata to those R-month oysters at The Local Oyster. September 14: High Zero Festival

While some might argue that Baltimore has lost its edge, the city’s eclectic arts scene is never more alive and well than during the annual High Zero arts festival. Now in its 19th year, musical mad scientists and world-class creatives will defy genre expectations and reinvent music as we know it with expert and out-there improvisations. Half of the core musicians are Baltimore locals, such as abujaphone player Baba L’Salaam and vintage Casio keyboardist Maria Shesiuk, validating the virtuosic talent of the city’s experimental music subculture. Embrace the alternative with a new range of audio possibilities.

September 15: Outcalls

When we first heard of Outcalls earlier this year, we couldn’t get enough of their debut single, “No King.” This weekend, they’re finally releasing their first EP, featuring four tracks and two remixes, and while you’ll have to wait for our full review in the October issue, we’ll just say: it’s friggin’ awesome. This weekend, catch a live broadcast of the female-fronted sextet’s hypnotic melodies and edgy beats, plus a sneak peek of their first music video. Led by Baltimore opera queens Melissa Wimbish and Britt Olsen-Ecker, both classically trained at Peabody Conservatory, the band is making waves with its dreamy vocals, lush electronic instrumentation, and rich alt-baroque sound. Be sure to arrive early as stellar local acts Super City and J Pope and the HearNow will be kicking things off, but be sure to don your best regal garb. You might get crowned the best-dressed royal of the night.

September 16: Korean Festival

There’s more to Korean culture than kimchi and bibimbap (though we love them both). Since 1977, the ever-growing Korean-American population in Baltimore has been sharing its vibrant traditions with the local community. With 15,000 attendants last year, this 40th annual event proves to be a public favorite. Located at the beautiful Centennial Park in Ellicott City, the celebration features eight hours of non-stop entertainment—from taekwondo demonstrations and traditional fan dances to rising k-pop stars like HeeSun Lee and singer-songwriter Dabit. Food trucks will be serving up mainstream Korean dishes like bulgogi and japchae, and a pojangmacha-style beer garden will pay homage to South Korea’s pop-up street bars. But drivers beware: there will be no public parking at Centennial Park, so make sure to leave your car at one of the six satellite parking locations.

April 28: Baltimore Bike Party’s 5th Birthday

This weekend, everyone’s favorite party on wheels turns five years old, and its birthday celebration is going to be epic. Kick it all off with a killer route through Mount Vernon and Bolton Hill—starting at St. Mary’s Park with a rest stop at Whitelock Park—followed by food, live music, and drinks at the Mount Vernon Marketplace. Get post-ride fuel with bites from The Local Oyster, Pinch Dumplings, and the new Cholitas Tacos, then “rehydrate” with cold, local brews from Taps Fill Station and Between2Buns. With themed and oftentimes costumed events, the monthly bike ride has become a must-attend happening and a creative incubator for the city’s cycling community. As always, party hats, noisemakers, and balloons are encouraged.

April 29: Baltimore Cocktail Week Wellness & Rejuvenation

We know it’s hard to decide between brunch cocktails or a morning workout, but luckily this weekend, you don’t have to choose. On Saturday, join Yogaworks for a restorative yoga class, followed by fruity, bubbly, spring cocktails as part of the annual Baltimore Cocktail Week. With tipples like blood orange cocktails and prosecco-studded sips, we can’t think of a better reward after sweating it out. All proceeds also benefit House of Ruth Maryland. Namaste, indeed!

For the 14th year, Baltimore’s CityLit Festival returns with an exciting lineup of acclaimed writers. With a focus on poetry, fiction, and non-fiction, award-winning author and TED Talk celebrity Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie will headline with conversations on feminism, poetry, and prose. Adichie—whose 2010 The Danger of A Single Story is one of the top 10 most-viewed TED Talks of all time and inspired her 2014 book We Should All Be Feminists—will chat with WYPR’s Tom Hall about writing, raising our voices, and activism. With a full day of sessions, also sit in on discussions about writing as political resistance, editing tips and tricks, and character building through the written word.

April 29: Fifth Annual Charm City Bluegrass Festival

This weekend, the “Excellent Women” of Baltimore are bringing you the ultimate girls night. In the spirit of making new friends and celebrating girl power, the new Society of Excellent Women meet-up group is hosting a Saturday night dance party at the Ottobar with DJ Pancakes spinning the best girl-power jams all night long. If the event is anything like the girl groups’ previous get-togethers—full of fun like cotton candy, tie-dye—we expect a full-on fete with hits like Pat Benatar’s  “Hit Me With Your Best Shot,” TLC’s “No Scrubs,” and Beyoncé’s “Run the World (Girls).” Because, let’s be honest . . .

‘Tis the season for gaining weight, because as much as we try, with so many sweets and treats all around us, it’s really hard to eat healthy. (I mean, who’s going to pass up on hot toddys and peppermint mochas, not to mention sugar cookies and gingerbread houses and rib roasts . . . you get the point.) To curb those winter calories, swing by Mount Vernon Marketplace this Sunday for a refreshing switch-up with holistic holiday shopping and eating. Each stall will be featuring healthy specials and nearly 20 vendors will be in tow, toting feel-good gifts like Hex Ferments kombuchas, krauts, and kimchis; Pure Chocolate By Jinji handcrafted cocoa; and PlantBar juices and raw foods. This Saturday, the cobblestone streets of Fells Point will transform into a winter wonderland with the neighborhood’s Olde Tyme Christmas festival. Catch Santa come in by tugboat at 9 a.m. and then make your way to the adults-only annual Eggnog Contest from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Broadway Square. Now in its 13th year, contestants will stack up against one another to see who makes the best sweet boozy beverage. (If you’re toting kids, there will also be hot chocolate and hot cider available, too.) Throughout the day, eat, drink, and shop local, but make sure you stick around until 5 p.m., when the lighted boat parade makes its way past Broadway Pier.

Dec. 4: Mayor’s Christmas Parade

For the 44th year, make your way to Medfield and Hampden to watch the Mayor’s Christmas Parade. Along this holiday tradition’s 2.5 mile-route, join more than 25,000 people to see dozens of marching bands, dance troops, mummers, floats, giant balloons, and more than 100 Harley Davidson motorcycles, not to mention Miss and Jr. Miss Yuletide and Santa himself. From TK road, down The Avenue, to 37 th Street, admire the old street cars, catch some candy, and give one last wave to Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.

Dec. 3: Night of 100 Elvises

Everyone loves Elvis, and for some odd reason, everyone seems to love Elvis even more around the holidays. This weekend, get in the festive spirit and gather ’round Lithuanian Hall for a celebration of The King. For one full night, dozens of cover bands, tribute artists, and diehard fans will all come together to pay homage to the late, great Mr. Presley with a colorful night of rock and roll. Admire the hot rods, grab some pictures with the show girls, tip back some Heavy Seas beers, and indulge in Elvis’ favorite: peanut-butter-and-banana sandwiches.

If you aren’t already hip to them, the Baltimore Women’s Maker Collective is a group of badass creatives who celebrate the work of self-identifying women and non-binary artists, business owners, and craftspeople throughout the great Baltimore region. They host monthly meetings, panel discussions, and a variety of events like artwork showcases and workshops. Their latest project is XXChange, a multilayered exhibit of more than 30 regional artists, featuring jewelry, furniture, textiles, metalwork, and more. On Friday, catch the closing reception at Area 405 during Alloverstreet in Station North, followed by a weekend-long pop-up shop at the new Open Works makerspace in Greemount West. Browse items like beautiful ceramics by Christina Haines, herbal infusions by Wight Tea Co., hipster-chic pillows by Cedar & Cotton, and handcrafted candles by Knit, Soy & Metal, to name a few.
