This impressive collection includes more than 15,000 items, from women’s, men’s, and children’s clothing to accessories like shoes, hats, and underwear spanning four centuries. The oldest item is a 1724 wedding apron, but there are also 19th-century horseback riding garments, embellished Roaring ’20s dresses, and designs once sold at the Hutzler’s department store.

There are pieces worn by iconic local figures, like Duchess of Windsor Wallis Simpson, politician Helen Delich Bentley, and mid-century American fashion trailblazer Claire McCardell, plus those made by rising designers Christian Siriano and Bishme Cromartie.

“Every day we get up and pick out what we wear and that says something about us and helps us learn about each other in interesting ways,” says Tolman, the MCHC’s vice present of collections and interpretations. “Clothing is such a powerful tool. It humanizes history.”

“Clothing is such a powerful tool. It humanizes history.”

The MCHC was founded as the Maryland Historical Society in 1844, but it wasn’t until 1919 that clothing would join the collection in earnest, with the purchase of the historic Enoch Pratt House, where the apparel was put on display.

But in the 1970s, the society shifted its focus toward other parts of its collection, and every shirt, hat, and ribbon was transitioned into long-term storage. All but forgotten, these pieces would not resurface until 2011, and under the tutelage of then-chief curator Alexandra Deutsch, the Fashion Archives were reborn.

“Alexandra started putting costumes into every exhibition, because it’s easier to see history with a person in front of you,” says Tolman, who co-curated 2019’s Spectrum of Fashion with Deutsch. “Seeing a woman’s mourning dress from the Civil War changes how you think about it. It’s not just the facts you were taught in school. People were here. They lived in this moment. And through them you can learn a lot about what happened.”

But for historic fashion to be exhibited in the first place is no easy feat, and it has taken several years to rehouse five floor-to-ceiling rooms’ worth of attire. Each item is cleaned, wrapped or padded with acid-free tissue or Tyvek, then transferred into archival blue-board boxes or hung on specialty hangers and wrapped in unbleached cotton, with the curators meticulously minimizing folds, which weaken fabric. All are researched and recorded in a digital database before moving into storage, which is climate-controlled for temperature and humidity to prevent mildew and dry rot, and later displayed for no more than one year at a time to reduce light damage, ensuring their survival for future generations.

With state funding, the MCHC is now transforming a former gallery into a new state-of-the-art facility devoted to storing textiles, which will hopefully be finished by their fall exhibit, showcasing one of the largest collections of clothing by McCardell, which caught the attention of New York fashion designer Tory Burch. Her current line is inspired by the Frederick-born designer, and her foundation has funded a new fellowship under Tolman, pictured right above with fellow Robyn Levy.

It’s hard for the curator to pick one favorite piece from the archives, but a red wool McCardell dress, currently donning a mannequin next to the tricorned Tench, is up there.

Stacy Stube was living the dream. In 2009, after graduating from the University of Baltimore, she moved to London to pursue a degree in Fashion Entrepreneurship & Innovation. Her goal was to one day launch a fashion company with a social conscience, one that would give back to local communities.

After 13 years working in management for various brands, such as Burberry and Alexander McQueen, she headed to her native Bali for education and inspiration. As an Indonesian-American, Stube was fascinated by the textile artistry of the Balinese. Studying with the local artisans, she experienced first-hand how painstakingly difficult it was to preserve traditional craftsmanship. But she wanted to keep that tradition alive. It was there that she built her brand, Elsa Fitzgerald, an evening womenswear line.

In 2019, Stube headed back to Baltimore, where she volunteered at the Baltimore Museum of Industry, working in the garment loft and giving visitors a glimpse into the life of a fashion designer. While at the museum, “I started to look at Hutzler’s, old Baltimore, the heritage—F. Scott Fitzgerald lived here, Billie Holliday, interesting and talented individuals who were inspired by the city,” she says. “That gave me my new starting point.”

Through her time at the museum, it became Stube’s mission to revitalize Baltimore’s textile work.

“We need some type of fashion that is mindful and full-bodied—like farm-to-table but from factory-to-boutique,” she explains.

With that in mind, she launched the SEW BROMO fashion heritage and needle trade school in March 2021. Located in a former factory in Pigtown, the school offers classes where you can learn a range of industry basics, from sewing techniques to entrepreneurship training. At the studio, budding designers can learn to develop their products from Stube and other experts and graduate with a sample run of garments to bring to market.

In the not-too-distant future, Stube says, SEW BROMO will offer monthly online memberships that will provide regularly uploaded content, including video walk-throughs of trade skills, on the studio’s Facebook group and member portal page.

For Stube, SEW BROMO offers a chance to merge the past and the present. “A big part of the work is to expand it to a fun and interesting space,” she says, “but we don’t want these [artisanal] skills to die.”

The first time Baltimore-based novelist Laura Lippman got dressed up for Twitter, she didn’t know it would turn into a regular thing.

The Twitter hashtag #DistanceButMakeItFashion was conceived by journalist (and connoisseur of all things glamorous) Rachel Syme. Fashion had been one of the first things to go by the wayside during the pandemic, so Syme thought it would be nice for people to occasionally get out of their yoga pants and into something a little fabulous. She proposed doing it every Sunday.

“And I was like, sure, I’ll do that,” Lippman says with a chuckle. “It just seemed funny and silly…I did it and it felt fantastic, like weirdly wonderful. I posted a photo of me that evening in this very fancy nightgown and robe that I literally wore on the Orient Express.”

A couple of days passed and Lippman decided to do it again.

“I reached into my closet and pulled out these over-the-knee red suede boots and paired them with a plaid dress and I put up a photo and wrote, ‘Oh Rachel what have you wrought?’”

From there, more outfits came—a coat dress with velvet applique tights and knee-high gray suede boots. A leopard-print coat with giant red sunglasses. An outfit—pink pants and a black top—styled by Georgia Ray, Lippman’s daughter with writer/producer David Simon.

“There are these really nice memories in my closet. I’ve been enjoying them,” Lippman says. (It doesn’t hurt that she’s more or less been the same dress size for 25 years.)

At one point, Lippman started telling the story behind the outfits—a dress she wore to the Emmys, another dress she wore to the premiere of The Sopranos at Radio City Music Hall—and she thinks she’ll continue with that practice.

“They’re almost like little writing prompts,” she says.

The response to the outfits has been very positive—although Lippman says she has filters set up on Twitter to minimize the appearance of bots or trolls.

“I’m sure there are some people who think it’s obnoxious,” she laughs. “There’s always someone who hates you online—that’s just a given!”

Lippman has really appreciated the ritual of creating the outfits, but she also wants to make it clear that she’s “achingly aware” how “lucky” she is.

“Knock wood, no one in my house is sick and no one close to us is sick,” she says. “For now, we don’t have to worry about our pay checks. I don’t know how to be luckier than that right now.”

So does Lippman recommend that everyone get in on the #DistanceButMakeItFashion phenomenon?

“I recommend that people do whatever makes them feel good right now,” she says.

At a young age, Baltimore native Bishme Cromartie had a knack for fashion and spent most of his time cutting up his own clothing to making miniature outfits for his G.I. Joes.

“Where I grew up it was weird for a 13-year-old to want a sewing machine,” Cromartie says. “My friends accepted me but it was just funny to see the things I got excited about versus the other guys in the neighborhood.”

While attending Reginald F. Lewis High School, he created popular hoodies and prom dresses for his classmates and dreamed of a career in fashion, but considered giving it all up when he was rejected by the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. It was his mother who snapped him back to reality.

“She sat me down and told me that you can’t always expect things to go your way and you have to learn to maneuver around problems,” Cromartie recalls.

Through much determination—and with a little help from his social media accounts—Cromartie landed one of his first designs on a Good Morning America segment. Since then, his accomplishments have been nothing short of remarkable, with his pieces gracing the pages of Vogue Italia and Elle Vietnam, and seen on celebrity clientele like Mel B and Andra Day, to name a few.

Though his talents have taken him to L.A. and New York and back again, Cromartie believes that relocating isn’t necessary if your designs are good enough. The majority of his collections have been inspired by Baltimore and he takes great joy in seeing how far the city has come.

“Exploring new places makes you realize that there really is no place like home,” Cromartie says. “It’s been amazing to be proud of coming from Baltimore.”

Online clothing shopping may be convenient, but getting the right fit is the eternal struggle—especially if you wear an atypical size. That’s why when Alex Dekowski opened her contemporary women’s boutique, Hello Addie, in Federal Hill this past summer, she decided to offer complimentary alterations to her customers.

“We do our best to find brands that fit most people, but everyone’s bodies are so different, and we really want anyone who comes in to be able to find something in the store that makes them feel comfortable and confident,” says Dekowski. “Shopping can be miserable, but with the in-store alterations, if something doesn’t fit you perfectly, we can tweak it so that it does.”

Dekowski, a business major who worked in banking after dropping out of college, always had a love for fashion and decided to open the boutique in Federal Hill this past July after testing the waters with numerous pop-up shops throughout Pennsylvania and Maryland. “I think the fact that I don’t have a huge fashion background is an advantage and allows me to see the needs of the consumer that people who have been in the industry wouldn’t necessarily see,” she says.

The store, which is named after Dekowski’s grandmother, is full of on-trend items from brands such as Sage the Label, Matisse Footwear, Line & Dot, and Pistola Denim. Every week, the team at Hello Addie does an Instagram Live video where they all try on new arrivals and discuss the materials, fits, and quality of the items in real time.

“Everyone that works here has very different body types, so we like to show our girls what each piece could look like on them,” Dekowski says. “We have customers who come in the next day and say, I saw this on Instagram and I would’ve never thought I’d like it, but it looked good on everyone here, so I need it.”

To further her goal of inclusion at Hello Addie, Dekowski has plans to create her own line sometime next year. “Being a buyer for the first time, I noticed quickly that there is no single line that makes something in regular and plus sizes,” she says. “I plan to carry many styles with each piece offered in extra small through plus size. We don’t want anyone to have to walk into the store and have to find their section. We want everyone to be able to look through the same racks and to find something that they can leave feeling great about.”

On the second Saturday in October (aka this Saturday, October 13), The Walters Art Museum will host its annual gala, this year celebrating a year of transformation with their theme “Metamorphosis.” While this isn’t exactly the Met Gala, The Walters and executive director Julia Marciari-Alexander enlisted local design prodigy Bishme Cromartie to make her outfit and encourages patrons to dress to the nines as well. We talked to Marciari-Alexander and Cromartie about the design process, their inspiration, and what to expect from this year’s event.

How did this collaboration come about?
Julia Marciari-Alexander: He did a photo shoot at the Walters for Bmore Art and I loved it.

Bishme Cromartie: It was just so weird. I did a collection called “The Chrysalis” because I felt like I was going through the process of being a caterpillar and coming out of my chrysalis as a designer. So, when I got the information about this event I kind of teared up because it felt like the universe letting me know that I am going in the right direction.

JMA: I was so nervous meeting you, I was like, “Oh my god, I’m going to meet a real-life designer. He is going to be all stiff and art-y.” But you just were so awesome and put me at ease immediately, and your collection is just so beautiful.

BC: I appreciate it. I’m prolonging the fittings because I don’t want it to end.

JMA: You can just be my personal stylist forever.

Why did you choose to have a local designer make your outfit?
JMA: We have such a commitment at the museum to Baltimore and the ways that the collection inspires Baltimore, and to have someone for whom that is 100-percent true being the star of the evening is just awesome.

BC: Don’t make me cry again. My mascara is not waterproof.

JMA: Fashion is art and we have a lot of examples throughout our collection of fashion throughout the ages, so this collaboration is just another piece of that.

What inspired the garment?
JMA: Well first, we walked through the museum with Bishme. Our collection is really about design, and I think that most of the works in the collection were used as inspiration in some way. Walking around with Bishme was just amazing because I was seeing the collection through his eyes and seeing his mind click in terms of what he was interested in and how it would fit with his development as an artist.

BC: I got chills walking through because we were standing in the museum talking and I realized we were standing there looking at one of my favorite artists’ paintings. I love Sir Lawrence and his work as far as draping and stuff. To see one of my favorite artist’s paintings for the first time in person was amazing and has been an eye opener to keep going and how things come full circle.

JMA: Seeing you looking at the Lawrence Alma-Tadema paintings and knowing the way this painter treats fashion and treats fabric has been a guiding force in your creativity and to have that happen right here, that made me cry. That was a moment of wonder. You had a moment of wonder and we got to experience that with you.

How much input did you have on the piece Julia?
JMA: The most interesting conversation that we had about the outfit—and I say outfit—was whether it was going to be a dress or pants. I saw myself wearing a dress, but Bishme really wanted to put me in pants.

BC: When you guys came to me, I was told you were open to different styles, so pants were a thought. But then when I got to meet Julia and got to know her, I thought she needs to stand out. A dress would’ve been expected, so for me I really just wanted to create a moment that reads well with the theme of the night. And then once I saw the invitation, I wanted the fabric to sort of mimic how the invitation looked with the detailing.

How is this event different from others in the city?
JMA: We don’t have any auctions, it’s really just a beautiful party in an extraordinary setting. This isn’t about an exhibition, it’s about the museum and celebrating the opportunity for everyone to have access to creativity. The money from tickets goes straight into our operating budget and covers a lot of our education programs.

BC: I love the fact that the theme of this event has a message behind it that I and other people can connect with. It’s about transition in our lives and growing. It’s not just a theme, it’s something that everyone experiences. Everyone is developing, and I think that’s why this experience has meant so much to me.

I’ve heard you want this to be sort of the Met Gala of Baltimore. Do you think people will get that and incorporate the theme into what they choose to wear?
JMA: Absolutely! We saw it last year with a lot of people you could tell thought about what they put on. Our theme last year was Egypt and I felt like our patrons got it and really stepped up their game in bringing their most beautiful clothing to reflect the collection well without being culturally inappropriate. I’m really interested in connecting our collections with contemporary artistic practice primarily through the lens of people in Baltimore and what better way to do that then through what we all are wearing.

This year I think we’ve been really intentional about how we’ve presented the event and I think people will understand even just from a feeling level the theme and what kind of event they are going to. It’s elegantly fun. But it does make you think.

What are you most excited for at this year’s event?
JMA: Sitting with Bishme. It is such an honor to be wearing something of yours because there is no one else that could’ve made something like this for me. Plus, we just really like each other.

BC: My fittings with Julia. I don’t want them to end.

JMA: Also, there is no one in this town that cares more about fashion than our Mayor [Catherine Pugh] and the opportunity to sit you right next to her and to let her see the amazing creativity that lives here in Baltimore all the time and to talk about your work and mentorship with the Baltimore Design School—the school she set up. That’s just so exciting. That’s what a museum can do.

Welcome to “Life Lines,” a new column on aging gracefully by writer Laura Black.

I wasn’t sure how to dress for a business meeting with a pair of thirty-something women at one of those nouveau coffeehouses. I had my go-to uniforms for board meetings and lunches with contemporaries at the Center Club,—but, these executives were the same age as my kids.

My wardrobe is centered around 40 pairs of black pants—37 of them have elastic waists. (The other three I never wear). Not that I need to justify, but, I need different lengths, fabric weights, and (especially) sizes. They run the gamut from tight-fitting leggings to wide legged, or what we used to call bell bottoms.

I stood in front of my full-length mirror and tried on several black pants and top/jacket combinations. Finally, I settled on a pair of medium weight pants and navy hip-length top. I hoped I looked somewhat stylish. I was tempted to ask Alexa, “Does this make me look old?” And, if she answered, “No,” I would add, “Does it make me look fat?”

In the last few years, like many parts of my body, my confidence in fashion has sagged. My angst is not limited to business meetings with millennials. Simply packing for vacation is cause for confusion. I wonder: Is it okay to wear a fanny pack? How about my extra-wide and super thick Saucony tennis shoes? (Those dainty white sneakers don’t have enough arch support.) And, if it’s hot, can I wear sleeveless tops—even if my underarms jiggle? How about shorts—am I past the age limit? Are capris better? Will they make me look like a Boca Bubbie?

Black-tie events bring a deluge of decisions. Are pantyhose still in? If so, nude or black? Heels are out for me and wedges don’t work either—after a few drinks, they make me wobble. I need flat and fashionable, but wide enough to accommodate custom orthotics. Will I be condemned if I show up in SAS rather than Manolo Blahnik?

Like, technology, I’ve kept-up enough to get by—but always run into problems. The difference is, when my computer freezes, my husband can help. But, where do I turn to find out if eyeliner is in? And, if it is, does it go on both the top and bottom of my lids? How about nail polish? My manicurist suggests blues, greens, and yellows. Does that mean red is a no? Getting more personal—is everything supposed to get waxed?

And, those undergarments—I think they’re called shapers. Admittedly, they’re much better than the old girdles and long-line bras. But, while they suck in my stomach and hips—somehow, like ants in the summer, my fat finds a way to escape. I also tried thongs from Victoria’s Secret. I wore a purple pair for a few hours—I just don’t get it. I know my granny panties are not a turn-on; but, my tush is grateful.

Looking for fashion direction, I observe other women in my age group. Some fight like David against the Goliath of aging. They subject their bodies to lifts, tucks, and fillers. They wear jeans with holes and boots without toes. And, many of them carry it off. I don’t.

On the other extreme, are the women who surrender to age without fighting. They wear floral house dresses or fashion favorites from the ’70s. They don’t have to lug plastic bags of clothes to Goodwill. For them, nothing is out of style.

The group I most admire have a knack for classic dressing. Their silver hair and designer scarves epitomize elegance. They don’t concern themselves with what’s in—they reach for what’s timeless. They walk tall with confidence and embrace their maturity. I can’t tie a scarf.

I know, I could make an appointment with a fashion consultant. Or, I could study Vogue and shop at Saks. But, whenever I learn the rules, the game changes.—and nobody sends me an alert. More importantly, I don’t care enough to stay up-to-date. As my 10-year-old granddaughter said, when we were shopping for a dress for her lower-school graduation, “I want to be myself, but I don’t want to stick out so much that other people talk.”

When I got to the coffee shop I noticed that one of the millennials was wearing a dress with a denim jacket, the other, jeans and a black top. Between sips of java and bites of avocado toast, we closed a deal.

On the way out, the one in the denim jacket said, “You look great for your age.” In other words, it didn’t matter what I wore—in their eyes, I’m old. And, that’s okay. I realized, my real fear was not fashion; it was marginalization.

If you’ve started to notice hints of yellow lining the walls and shelves of your favorite stores, you’re not crazy, it’s full-on happening.

This bright and cheery color, which fashion blog Man Repeller dubbed “Gen-Z Yellow” is the new hue filling the closets of the young, hip, and fashion forward—dethroning the once-popular “Millennial Pink” that we have seen everywhere over the past year.

While this sunny shade can be intimidating to most, the trend extends itself to different shades of yellow, such as canary, gold, and mustard, allowing people of all complexions to embrace it.

With more than 50,000 followers on Instagram, Dayna Bolden documents her day-to-day life for the masses leaving us feeling completely inspired. From fashion and beauty to travel and family, she has all of the bases covered and offers heartfelt advice, aspirational goals, and attainable fashion tips and tricks in a truly genuine way. We caught up with Bolden to talk about how she got started blogging, adventures in motherhood, and where she likes to shop in Baltimore.

What made you want to start blogging?
I really wanted to create a platform for myself where I could share my lifestyle as an entrepreneur, a mother, a wife, and just document all of the things I love.

How is being a mother impacted your posts?
I love showing my readers the beauty of motherhood and how I am still able to follow my dreams, while still being an amazing mother. I feel that a lot of women feel that once they become mothers and have another little life to take care of, that everything else has to stop and that is definitely not the case. I believe that being a blogger mom also really inspires my daughter to know that she can do what she loves as she gets older.

Where do you love to shop in Baltimore?
I love Brightside Boutique—they have amazing clothes and great quality stuff. I also recently discovered another cute store called Poppy and Stella, I haven’t had the time to shop there as much as I would like too but I’m definitely planning on it. There is also an online clothing company I really love called Mess in a Bottle, sadly there so no real store yet, but my friend owns the company and she sells really cute t-shirts online. Those are probably my go-to places in Baltimore.

What do you like to do outside of your blog?

I’m an entrepreneur. I own a business called Bolden Creative Media, where I brand consult and work with brands on creative directing, functions, and strategies. I also love spending time with my family and traveling. I don’t have a lot of hobbies because blogging was always my hobby when I was younger and I turned that into a full-time career.

Any style tips for the summer?
I love a cute dress, and I feel that you can never go wrong with a maxi dress. The perfect maxi is always going to look chic and is really easy to dress up or down. Also a nice pair of shorts, that aren’t too short. I don’t like super tight or super short shorts, but a nice fitted pair of shorts are essential for your summer wardrobe.

What is your go-to outfit?
My everyday go-to outfit right now is sweats, a cute T-shirt, and just pairing that with some sneakers. But If I’m actually going somewhere and need to look cute, I love nice tapered pants, a cute blouse, and a statement heel as my go-to.

Marvel’s latest blockbuster Black Panther has already broken records during its opening weekend, topping the charts and earning more than $200 million. The film has not only received accolades for being Marvel’s first film with a black director, an almost entire black cast, and featuring a black superhero—but also for its fashion.

The black community had been anticipating this moment since the trailer dropped in June showcasing colorful, ethnic designs worn by the cast. Veteran costume designer Ruth Carter can be cited for the uproar it created on “black Twitter” with the hashtag #BlackPantherSoLit, everyone asking “What are you wearing to Black Panther?”

Not only are the costumes fashion-forward, but they blend traditional and contemporary African styles from across the continent. From cold-shoulder, floor length gowns to Afropunk stylings to authentic African, hand-dyed robes, the film’s costumes have sparked up discussions about embracing African culture vs. cultural appropriation.

“I wanted to show the world the beauty of tribal dress and move that forward in a more modernistic way,” Carter told The Atlantic. “I have seen some really bad African depictions of costumes where there’s a bone in their nose and they’re wearing some kind of hide and cross-strap.”

On a chilly Thursday evening, people lined the street outside of Common Ground Bar in Manhattan’s meatpacking district to see “The Chrysalis,” a fashion presentation by Bishme Cromartie. The designer and Park School grad has recently gained popularity from LA Fashion Week and bevy of celebrities he has dressed.

But this was his first time showing at the legendary New York Fashion Week, and what Cromartie had in store did not disappoint. Common Ground was filled with stringed lights, tree silhouettes, and lush hanging plants that brought the natural state of the outside in.

“The name came from the transitional state of the butterfly,” says Cromartie. “The last two years have been my transformation. I wanted this collection to show beauty effortlessly. The chrysalis is about breaking free, being more connected with yourself, and understanding the new person you are becoming.”

Evolution was certainly the theme of the night with the 14 total looks showing the architectural design and shape Cromartie is known for mixed with a new-found touch of femme glam accentuated by patent leather vinyl belts.

“I’m learning to become more subtle and that I can be that way while still incorporating bold shape,” says Cromartie. “I still love the hardcore look and making women look strong, but I’ve been tapping into a place showing a softer side. I’m making my designs more of a slow song.”

Cromartie kept the show in the family, bringing along hairstylists, makeup artists, a videographer, and a DJ from Baltimore to complete his vision.

“Once I have my people that I work with and we develop that rhythm, we become like family,” he says. “As much as this is a big opportunity for me, I want it to also be an opportunity for them. I always want to make sure I’m allowing people to represent Baltimore in a different, more positive light.”

Backstage, the models kept it low key with a more natural look for both their hair and makeup. Shy Watters—who has a salon space in Mt. Vernon and in Fells Point—headed up the hair styling with a timeless ’20s-inspired look. The team opted for a left part with soft waves that mimicked the wings of a butterfly and relied on each model’s natural beauty to allow the emphasis to be placed on the clothing.

The makeup was kept as simple as possible with Alana Johnson—makeup artist for the Baltimore Ravens Cheerleaders—leading the team. “We wanted the skin to be very soft and glowy,” says Johnson. “We did a glossy lid, highlighted cheek bones, and a stained lip that we saw a lot of last fashion week, so we are bringing it back.”

Cromartie’s vision aligned perfectly with the venue—the color palette complementing the garments, the music energizing the crowd, and the intimacy making the collection come alive. The event was a fitting next step in his journey as a designer.

arly September in Manhattan, the streets suddenly seem more flooded than usual with trend chasers and style icons. The temperatures are still warm and the air in the subway is heavy as crowds flock from line to line and show to show, hoping to snag a good seat or at least find a reflective surface to ensure their makeup hasn’t melted off.

It’s New York Fashion Week and celebrities, socialites, and writers are all vying for that premium seat or backstage interview.

But a reprieve can be found inside ArtBeam studios in Chelsea, a large open space with tropical umbrellas hanging from the high ceiling. Even from a tiny seat on the bleachers, there is a clear view of the celebrity-filled front row—Neve Campbell, Coco Rocha, and Kelly Osbourne—their faces lit by constant flashbulbs.

As the lights dim, a soundtrack of female power vocals fills the room. We’ve just entered Christian Siriano’s world and all the outside chaos fades away. The theme of his collection is the “Isle of Capri,” inspired by vintage photos of Jackie Kennedy Onassis’ vacations there in the late ’60s and ’70s. As the models begin to strut down the runway, the audience is whisked away to that era, with bold colors paying homage to the turquoise water of the Tyrrhenian Sea and those striped, citrus-colored beach umbrellas adding to the mood.

“I wanted something on a bigger scale, not only being a bigger brand, but changing people’s idea of
fashion and women.”

Even more notable is the variety of models Siriano has presenting his line—women of all different shapes, sizes, and colors, allowing onlookers to find at least one model who looks like them. Less than 15 minutes later, the show comes to a close and Siriano emerges to receive acknowledgment for his new collection. But unlike most designers who walk the entire runway to bask in their glory, he flashes a quick smile and waves before ducking backstage.

The conclusion is fitting for a fashion designer who has never taken the traditional route. For starters, he didn’t grow up in a fashion mecca like New York or Los Angeles. He grew up in the Annapolis area and went to school at Baltimore School for the Arts, carving a path for himself in the fashion industry and as a businessman by relying on instinct, innovation, and inclusivity.

“Growing up, I knew I wasn’t meant to stay in one place,” Siriano says from his Midtown studio. “I wanted something on a bigger scale, not only being a bigger brand, but changing people’s idea of fashion and women.”

Most people know the name Christian Siriano from season four of Project Runway, which he won, and which gave him, at age 21, a reputation as a fashion prodigy. But fashion and the arts were calling long before the then-hit Bravo TV show.

Siriano grew up in the suburbs of Annapolis where he had what he describes as an idyllic childhood. Living near the water, he remembers always being on the nearby beaches or on a boat—even owning a pair of dreaded boat shoes to fit in with the local nautical lovers.

“Annapolis was a great place to grow up,” he says. “You get a very suburban life, but because it is so close to Baltimore and D.C., there is a metropolitan feel, so you don’t feel closed off from the world.”

The son of two Anne Arundel County schoolteachers, Siriano was drawn to the arts at an early age. His older sister, Shannon, was a ballet dancer at the Ballet Theatre of Annapolis—now the Ballet Theatre of Maryland—which is where he first had exposure to fashion. When he was just 5 or 6 years old, his mother, Joye, would bring him to the theater with paper and pencils to stay busy, and he would sketch the costumes—his first memorable sketch being the Sugar Plum Fairy outfit from a performance of The Nutcracker.

“I had people along the way tell me that he was very talented and had an eye for detail,” says Joye. “At first I thought these are just relatives and friends being nice. Of course, I think he is wonderful—I’m his mom!”

Siriano attended Broadneck High School for his freshman year before applying to Baltimore School for the Arts (BSA). Stephen Kent, head of the school’s visual arts department at the time, remembers Siriano coming in for his audition dressed in a black suit and showing his portfolio of fashion illustrations. “He stood out right away,” says Kent. “Everything was coordinated and professional, and he presented his work in a very thoughtful way. He had no formal training, but he had this passion. I knew right away he needed to be at this school. Even at 14, he was convincing, and he knew what he wanted to do. I believed him.”

Siriano completed the last three years of high school at BSA, where he developed his talent and even created his own assignments. Because his interest was in fashion, he was able to primarily focus on that instead of fine arts. “BSA is one of the most special places in the world,” says Siriano. “You’re thrown into this world with unbelievably creative people and you’re given freedom and responsibility in your curated study.”

While in Baltimore, Siriano spent time with friends at City Café and the old Donna’s around the corner from the BSA on Charles Street.

“Donna’s had, like, the worst coffee, because it was so strong,” he says. “But the inside was just so cool and you felt like you were surrounded by artists. It was really special being young and going to a place like that. It was like something out of a movie.”

In the spring of 2004, it was time for Siriano’s final jury at the BSA—that’s art school speak for a final exam. He persuaded the school to let him hold two fashion shows in the school’s exhibition gallery. Its blank white walls were typically used for hanging pieces of student artwork, but Siriano transformed the space into a makeshift runway. He brought in rows of chairs, arranged for models, and enlisted the help of his colleagues at Bubbles Salon—where he worked part-time shampooing hair—to do hair and makeup. The clothing was coherent and cool with a lot of frayed edges, which created an unfinished look.

“He was just learning to sew then,” says Joye. “Some of the clothes were hand-sewn or sewn by machines, but some of it was just a glue gun. Somehow he got these dresses made, and it was amazing.” At the second show, people couldn’t even fit into the space and watched from outside of the door. “It was a lot of coordinating and a lot of detail,” says Kent. “But that is what he has always been good at, and that is why he is successful.”

Siriano applied to the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City for college—he had completed a summer program there—but was not accepted. While it was a bit of an ego blow, it also spurred him on to do things his own way and to step out of his comfort zone, something he does not regret now.

“I’m glad it happened that way because it made me want to do something else, something that was totally different from anyone that I knew,” he says. Ultimately, he decided to go international, attending the American InterContinental University in London. While there, he scored internships with iconic design houses Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen.

“I knew nothing,” he laughs. “But I was always good at pretending like I knew more than I did.” He saw how both brands maintained smaller teams, making samples in-house, which Siriano says eventually inspired him to do the same with his own brand. After three years in London, he returned home to Annapolis briefly and then was off to New York City, where he moonlighted as a makeup artist for Stila Cosmetics while still designing custom pieces for clients. “New York was tough in the early years, but I loved it,” he says. “When you are younger, you thrive off of the hustle and the challenge.”

Siriano and his sketches in his Chelsea studio.

That was certainly the case when Siriano was a contestant on the well-known fashion design reality competition Project Runway. He was an early fan favorite, wowing viewers with his impressive designs and lively personality. “To see him on a TV show was very fun and exciting,” says his mom. “Sometimes I would watch him and think, ‘I don’t know who that person is.’ He was pretty comedic, and some of that is who he is, but some of it, I think, was him knowing he needed to bring the drama or he wasn’t going to stay on the show.”

Winning the competition was obviously a big moment for Siriano, but another life-changing event was on the horizon. He met freelance photographer Brad Walsh during a Gawker photoshoot in advance of the show’s premiere. The two began dating two weeks later—and got married in 2016.

“He was doing commercials for his season of the show and I remember him being really animated,” Walsh says. “But in person he was way more himself, which is very calm, smart, and business-oriented—not like the character you might have imagined if you only saw him on TV.”

Winning Project Runway opened a lot of doors for Siriano. But lots of winners have been flashes in the pan. Siriano was determined to parlay his win into a sustained career. One way he did that was by seeking out opportunity—no matter what form it came in—and placing his trust in the right people. After the first collection of his label debuted in September of 2008, he signed a deal to design a low-cost line for Payless ShoeSource. His egalitarian approach to fashion got him attention. Celebrities like Heidi Klum, Victoria Beckham, and Rihanna began to take notice of his designs. “It’s amazing as a young designer to see people wearing your clothes,” he says. “Even now, it’s a nice moment. It makes it feel a little bit worth it on the days that feel like they aren’t.”

Siriano’s brand is strong and feminine, with shapes and styles created with real women in mind. Unlike some designers who send impractical looks down the runway, Siriano has mastered the delicate sweet spot between design and functionality, which is one reason why he was inducted into the prestigious Council of Fashion Designers of America in 2013. More importantly, he’s not just designing for that sample size 2. And, as his reputation has grown through the years, he has almost single-handedly destroyed any stigma attached to making it from a reality television show.

“Christian Siriano is more than just a kid who got his start on Project Runway,” says Elle senior fashion editor Nikki Ogunnaike. “He’s a wildly talented designer who continues to push the conversation forward when it comes to size inclusivity on the runway and red carpet.”

Siriano credits his roots in Baltimore for opening his mind to people of different sizes and cultures. That’s why he always insists on casting diverse models for his shows and why he was the perfect choice to provide Whoopi Goldberg with her entire wardrobe when she hosted the Tony Awards in 2008. “I’ve been dressing women who are bigger than a sample size since my first collection,” Siriano says.

“You can tell he doesn’t try to change the person he’s dressing, instead celebrating her shape just how it is,” says Elle’s Ogunnaike. “He has always been a champion of the female form, and, because of that, women love to wear his designs.”

For plus-sized model Candice Huffine, donning one of Siriano’s dresses makes her feel invincible. “Wearing a Christian Siriano design is a celebration in clothing form,” she says. “When I wear his dresses I feel like I’m saying, ‘I’m here, I’m proud, I am a badass, and I am beautiful’ all without saying a word.”

In fact, last year, when the all-female cast of Ghostbusters was ramping up for their big premiere, Leslie Jones, one of the stars of the film, sent out a tweet voicing frustration over her fashion options. “It’s so funny how there are no designers wanting to help me with a premiere dress for [the] movie,” she wrote. Within 30 minutes, Siriano responded with a hands-up emoji. Less than two weeks later, the 49-year-old actress would look sleek and sexy as she wore his bright red, off-the-shoulder gown on the red carpet at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles.

“Leslie definitely brought [awareness of size-ism in the industry] to a bigger spectrum of the world, which was good and bad,” Siriano says. “It sucked that it had to happen to have this issue be relevant.” Siriano’s dress for Jones brought him a lot of attention and was a wonderful accomplishment, to be sure, but Walsh says that his husband doesn’t think he has done anything special.

“He is a little uncomfortable being congratulated about that kind of thing,” Walsh says. “To him, it shouldn’t be remarkable to see every body.”

BRAD WALSH AND SIRIANO AT THE Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic, JUNE 2017.

With numerous collections under his belt, Siriano continues to work on his designs, crafting beautiful evening and wedding gowns in his airy studio. The walls are lined with racks of dresses with textured embroidery and intricate beading creating an almost dreamlike, whimsical atmosphere.

“They don’t even look like dresses, they look like works of art,” his mother gushes about some recent pieces. “You can tell that he studied the visual arts before he got into fashion, and you can see that in his clothes. Sometimes they look like paintings.”

Both his mom and Walsh say their proudest moment was seeing then First Lady Michelle Obama in a Christian Siriano original at the Democratic National Convention in 2016. “We were watching live and she comes out in the dress waving and there is this huge standing ovation for her and she gives this incredible speech,” says Walsh. “The whole time I was just like, ‘Wow, my husband is dressing the First Lady.’”

It has been a heady, whirlwind of a decade, which is probably why Siriano takes his downtime so seriously. When not in the spotlight, he and Walsh (now a musician and successful music producer) prefer to spend time at their country house in Connecticut, which they both independently describe as their “favorite place in the world.”
A typical night for the couple includes a homemade meal by Walsh and a binge session of some of their favorite series like Game of Thrones and Orange Is the New Black.

“Both of our businesses are so unpredictable, so it’s nice to have a constant,” says Siriano. “I think that’s why it has worked for us for so long. Because we can be predictable to each other.”

Meanwhile, Siriano is excited to see his brand continue to grow, but the future holds no promises. “If I’m over this whole fashion thing in a few years,” he cracks, “I’ll just open a bed and breakfast and call it a day.”

Since coming together in 2009, Best Coast has frequented our playlists with their dreamy, lo-fi California indie pop melodies and relatable lyrics. Along the way, the band’s songwriter, guitarist, and lead singer Bethany Cosentino has made a name for herself not only musically, but as a sartorial obsession to her fans and beyond for her impeccable style on and off stage.

With a show at the Ottobar on September 12 and a North American tour on the horizon with Paramore, we talk to Cosentino about her personal style, what it’s like to pack for tour, and how she has evolved over the last decade.

How would you describe your day-to-day style?
Functional, sexy, and casual. At any given moment I could nap in my daily outfits, but there’s always a little skin showing.

Packing for a tour seems like a daunting task. How do you go about editing what you bring?
I used to try and bring enough stuff so that I never had to wear the same outfit onstage twice, but that got way too complicated. I try and bring a bunch of different tops and a few set bottoms. I usually wear the same pair of boots onstage—gold Saint Laurent boots—and then I always bring casual shoes for days off on top of running shoes for when I workout.

Who is your style icon?
Debbie Harry, Rihanna, Stevie Nicks, Cher in the ’70s.

Do you have a favorite or least favorite trend that is popular right now?
My current favorites are jumpsuits, high waisted wide-leg pants, athleisure—because I’m lazy sometimes—and pantsuits. My least favorite trends are jeans that have like half the leg cut open intentionally and pom-pom earrings.

When you are on tour and traveling, do you ever get the opportunity to shop? Any favorite stores you’ve discovered?
Portland, Maine is one of my favorite cities we’ve ever played in. I walked around all day and found so many cute vintage shops and an amazing crystal store where I got a great Tarot reading.

What is your favorite article of clothing and why?
A vintage 1976 Joni Mitchell tour letterman jacket. My mom got it for me off eBay for my birthday about five years ago. It’s so old and incredible. People have offered to buy it off my back, but I could absolutely never part with it.

How has your style evolved over the last 10 years?
I’ve become more confident and I think my style shows that. I was 20 years old then and my style was so confusing. I look back on photos now and I’m like, ‘What was I thinking?’ My style was like very ’80s, but the bad era of ’80s fashion.

As a woman in the entertainment industry who deals with unfortunate criticism, what’s your advice for people to stay true to themselves and not care about what others think when it comes to style?
Just remember that your opinion of yourself is the one that truly matters. People will always criticize you—regardless of who you are and what field you’re in. As long as you’re confident and comfortable, that’s what matters.

This year marks two decades of Katwalk Boutique bringing fabulous garments and accessories to the women of Baltimore. Stepping into the Fells Point boutique feels like entering an avant-garde paradise, with pastel painted walls and mannequins covered head-to-toe in trendy styles. We stopped by Katwalk to ask owner Toni James about her special traditions, favorite trend, and longtime style icon.

Where did the name for your boutique come from?
TJ: The name comes from the runways of Paris, like walking on a catwalk. My husband came up with it—we used to go to a lot of fashion shows and all of the models come out on the catwalk.

What’s your favorite item in the store?
TJ: My favorite item is the track pants with the embellishments. Right now leisurewear is hip, so instead of the traditional track pants we tried to do something different and beautiful.

Does your boutique have any special traditions?
TJ: The fashion seat! Everyone who comes in takes a picture in the fashion seat. We believe in customer service, so when someone comes in, no matter if they’re buying something or just taking a stroll in the Katwalk, we are going to treat them the same way.

Describe the typical Katwalk Kutie.
TJ: The Katwalk Kutie is someone who loves themselves. They’re confident, and they’re not afraid to stand out in a crowd.

What inspires the style of Katwalk?
TJ: It’s not about style; we don’t follow trends. We follow what the Katwalk customer will love for that season. It’s all about quality, fit, and what will make that person feel confident when they walk down the street.

Who is your style icon?
TJ: Diana Ross. When I was five years old, she triggered the passion that I have for fashion. Everyone who knows me knows I love Diana Ross.

What Baltimore treat is your guilty pleasure?
TJ: Moe’s Seafood. My husband and I go almost every Friday night; I love everything on the menu.

What is special about the location of Katwalk?
TJ: I think it’s the people—no matter who comes through the boutique everyone is happy and has a great attitude.

What is your current favorite fashion trend?
I love kaftans. We’ve been buying them ever since we opened up in ’97. I love if they’re embellished, sequined, or hand painted—I’m a kaftan girl.

How are you celebrating 20 years of Katwalk?
TJ: On September 23, we are having a huge fashion show with other Baltimore designers. We don’t just want to celebrate Katwalk, we want to celebrate other designers in Baltimore. It’s also a charity event for Shoes That Fit. We give away brand new shows to kids in need year round.

With the vast collection of fashion blogs dominating the internet, choosing which one to read can be an overwhelming feat. Not to mention searching for a blog catered to men’s fashion. But don’t fret, we’ve narrowed down your search for the perfect menswear blog that is both informational and inspirational. Professional musician and elite-level bicycle racer Brian Sacawa has tackled the menswear business in his latest endeavor as the founder and curator of the blog He Spoke Style. We sat down with Sacawa to learn more about his take on personal style and the growth of his popular site.

How did you get started?
Brian Sacawa: I started He Spoke Style about four years ago. I have always been interested in menswear and style ever since my father made me watch old James Bond movies when I was a kid. I’ve always been a very detail-oriented person and menswear is about attention to detail and being precise, with lots of room to be expressive and do your own thing. I sensed there was a void for menswear online—for a site that combined information and inspiration into something more attainable for the mature, professional guy who was interested in fashion. From the very beginning, we wanted to be a site that offers honest, relatable, and approachable content for the regular guy.

What makes your blog different from others?
BS: I think it’s the personality and the connection people feel to me, because I’m just a regular guy, whereas bigger publications deal with an editor. I’ve also done other web-based projects in the past, so I knew how it works, but getting into the rhythm of seasons and how things work in fashion was different. At first I would just write what I was interested in but, as we’ve grown, I’ve understood the importance of what people are looking for each month.

How did you come up with the name HeSpokeStyle?
BS: Originally it was titled Baltimore Style Guide, because like a lot of my other projects, I’ve started small in the community and branched out. But I had a good friend that hated the name and said I shouldn’t tie myself to the city since style is universal. So I came up with He Spoke Style, it’s a play on bespoke, which is the ultimate of custom-suit making. It wasn’t the original idea, but that’s the one that stuck.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of your business?
BS: You’re able to communicate something about yourself, who you are, what group you belong to, or want to belong to, simply by what you wear. We reach over half a million people every month now between our social media accounts and our site. It’s great to know that what we’re doing is actually useful to people.

What are some of the collaborations you have coming up?
BS: Right now were doing a couple big projects with IWC, which is a luxury watch manufacturer. We have a three part content series with them coming up based on a brand new limited edition timepiece that they have. We’re also partnering with brands like Otterbox, and Dom Perignon, and we’re currently a contributing editor to The Rake Magazine, which is the premiere men’s style magazine.

What do you see coming next for He Spoke Style?
BS: I want to increase our YouTube presence. I think there’s a big opportunity for us there, so we’re actually working on a couple different content series right now that are all video related.

Who is your style icon?
BS: My friend Giampaolo Alliata from Milan. He sticks to a blazer, pants, a shirt, and a tie. He’s this put together man, but there’s no flash. It’s all about subtlety.

What is your go to look?
BS: Simple and basic. For instance, a blue suit with a white shirt and a grey tie.

No outfit is complete without?
BS: The perfect fragrance.

What was the most embarrassing fashion trend you have ever participated in?
BS: Skidz. Do you remember those? It was the late eighties or early nineties when MC Hammer pants were in. They were these sort of very wide pajama pants that were plaid or had some kind of weird pattern on them, and then they had that traffic sign with the car skidding on them.

What is your favorite trend right now?
BS: I guess my favorite trend is actually men caring about how they dress and putting some effort into it.
