Pickles Pub: One of Baltimore’s best baseball bars is expanding and it’s kind of a “big dill.” Making even more home-baked goods, The Big Green Doughnut Machine is popping up next to Pickles Pub with pastries perfect for the Camden Yards crowd. The townhouse next door, currently used as the pub’s storage, will house the holey treats. There will be a separate entrance and one connecting it to the main pub, making the deliciousness all more easily accessible. Additionally, the bar also announced that it will be opening a second location in Dundalk later this summer, the first of many new franchised locations to come.

Manor Hill Tavern: Nearly a month after the flooding of Old Ellicott City, Manor Hill Tavern reopened this past weekend. Located just off of Main Street, the restaurant sustained minimal damage and has been offering support to devastated neighbors, like bringing them cold water and free lunches. Now the mid-19th century building is bringing back grilled-up classics.

NEWS

Alonso’s Changing Owners: For 85 years, Alonso’s has been serving up specialty burgers unlike any fast casual competitors. With dressings from peanut butter to pesto, their 20 plus options make for unique perfection. And now owner Steve Summers is ready to retire after purchasing the place in 2009. Binod Uprety, the owner of neighboring Namaste Baltimore Indian Cuisine, will be taking the reins running the historic restaurant, and isn’t planning any significant changes.

Tagliata Named Top Restaurant: There’s nothing to whine about whenever taste-testing at Tagliata. Bringing Baltimore’s largest wine list, it’s no surprise the Italian staple was selected by Wine Enthusiast magazine as a top restaurant for wine in the U.S. Its upscale ambiance is always top notch for charm city, with live music and private dining.

Seacret’s Named Top Beach Bar: Thinking of drinks like “Jamaican Iced Tea,” “Bahama Mama,” or “Island Time,” brings us right back to spring break. But at this Ocean City waterfront beach bar spring break is all summer long. Daily Meal rated the Jamaican-inspired joint as one of the top 25 beach bars in the country, with bars, stages, and a nightclub all in one.

EVENTS

LatinoFest
6/22 and 6/23: The 38th annual arts and culture event is back this Friday and Saturday, celebrating Latino heritage in support of EBLO, a nonprofit benefitting educational opportunities for hispanic students. Peruse through Patterson Park for music, dancing, games and food. Cuisine will be offering tastes from the Caribbean to the Americas.

UTZ Cheese Ball Cookoff/Fundraiser
6/24: Omelettes can get experimental with meats, veggies, and cheeses. But have you ever thought to make yours with cheeseballs? Baltimore Taphouse is challenging Baltimoreans to get creative with their own cheese ball-infused dishes, which will be judged by local chefs and food talents. Proceeds from the fundraiser will be donated in support of the Oskar Blues Can’d Aid Foundation Bike Build Program.

Month-Long Island Room
TO 7/29: If it’s going to be a hot and humid Baltimore July, we might as well drink like we’re in the islands. Beginning on Friday, June 29, Pen & Quill will be offering tropical food, drinks, and music for an entire month. The Baltimore Whiskey Company and Lyon Distilling are partnering to provide popular cocktails to cool down in the summer heat. The tropical pop-up is designed to be a local “getaway,” with leisurely events like month-long limbo.

SHUT

Alewife Baltimore: It was the final closing time for Alewife after Saturday’s last call. The beloved bar announced its ending unexpectedly in a Facebook post over the weekend, thanking Baltimore for “being home for eight years.” Their home was known for happening happy hours during the week and an exclusive mug club, which customers could join after tasting 150 different beers chosen by the restaurant. For many, these mugs will become a special keepsake after cheersing good-bye to Alewife.

Cured and 18th & 21st: After much anticipation, the team behind Howard County’s Iron Bridge Wine Co. has finally cut the ribbon at this hybrid concept inside the new One Merriweather building in Columbia. The building houses a casual Mid-Atlantic eatery called Cured up front, as well as 18th & 21st in the back —a speakeasy-style jazz club named after the amendments that enacted and later repealed Prohibition. The menus in both dining rooms are spearheaded by chef Christopher Lewis, a local industry veteran who most recently ran the kitchen at Iron Bridge. To celebrate the grand opening and Capital JazzFest happening just a few hundred yards away at Merriweather Post Pavilion this weekend, 18th & 21st will highlight performances by local jazz musicians all weekend long. 10980 Grantchester Way, Columbia, 667-786-7111

The Pizza Trust: Just when we thought Belvedere Square Market had everything, a new pizza joint is being thrown into the mix later this summer. James Clark, who owns Clark Burger inside the Senator Theatre across York Road, is debuting this new spot that will serve quick-fire pizzas, wings, fries, and salads. The menu of personal pies includes varieties like the “Mobtown” (garlic oil, mozzarella, caramelized shallots, roasted red peppers, and toasted pine nuts), the “Dirty Bird” (truffle bechamel sauce, herb chicken, bacon bits, and B-More Saucy buffalo drizzle), and the “Trust,” which tops hand-stretched dough with house red sauce, green peppers, and sweet and spicy Italian sausage. 529 E.
Donut Alliance: After one year of peddling their tasty treats at local eateries and cafes, husband-and-wife team Jeff and Emily Arenberg are settling in a brick-and-mortar of their own. Slated to officially open on Harford Road in Lauraville later this month, Donut Alliance will feature a daily selection of the couple’s signature vegan varieties including strawberry lemonade, maple facon (vegan bacon), and classic Boston cream. “We’re avid bakers,” Emily says. “So we’re always trying to get to where non-vegans can’t tell the difference.” 4311 Harford Rd., 410-627-4597

The Elk Room: It’s been an exciting week for Atlas Restaurant Group’s speakeasy-style cocktail bar in Harbor East. On Wednesday, the dimly lit hangout was awarded a coveted spot on Esquire’s annual list of the “21 Best Bars in America.” The write-up gives shout-outs to industry veterans Shaun Stewart (who actually recently moved on from Elk Room) and Andrew Nichols, and praises the duo’s creative drinks including “The Poe’s Raven”—a smoked rum and coconut cocktail that was inspired by the rum-ham bit in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. “Being named one of the Best Bars in America is a result of all of the hard work, passion, and dedication that our team puts into the Elk Room each and every day,” says Atlas managing partner Eric Smith, who oversees the beverage program. “We are very appreciative of the recognition, and will continue to raise the bar when it comes to cocktails and service.” In previous years, Esquire’s list has included The Brewer’s Art, Rye, and Mt. Royal Tavern. The Elk Room, 1010 Fleet St., 410-244-5830

6/1: Lobster Roll Fridays Return to The Corner Pantry
You know it’s the start of summer when chef Neill Howell brings this Friday tradition back to The Corner Pantry in Mt. Washington. Starting this Friday, June 1, Howell will be whipping up his classic Maine lobster rolls on housemade bread served with an order of crispy chips. Swing by the Falls Road haunt on Fridays throughout the summer starting at 11 a.m. to taste the signature summer dish. 6080 Falls Road, 667-308-2331, $28.

Plus, there will be a la carte local beer, food truck fare, live music, and a playground area with crafts for kids. If that’s not enough to convince you, ’90s chart-toppers Vertical Horizon (think “Everything You Want” and “Best I Ever Had”) will perform a headlining set at 7 p.m. Oregon Ridge Park, 13401 Beaver Dam Rd., Cockeysville, 1-8 p.m., $29-39

La Food Marketa: In a swift, four-month turnaround, chef Chad Gauss managed to transform a vacated Italian restaurant in Pikesville’s Quarry Lake at Greenspring into this highly anticipated South American spot. Gauss, owner and executive chef of The Food Market in Hampden, showcases his “Spanglish” takes on the classics with dishes including Peruvian chicken fajitas, barbecue empanadas, a “Gringo” pizza topped with ground beef, and veal meatloaf with mesquite rice and roasted salsa verde. The spinoff—which features custom banquettes, intricate light fixtures, and colorful artwork that serves as a nod to South American culture—premiered last week. 2620 Quarry Lake Drive, Pikesville, 410-415-0606

Honeygrow: This Philadelphia-based DIY salad and stir-fry chain is making major moves to Charm City in the coming months. Not only will the restaurant debut a location in Charles Village this fall, but it has also snagged a portion of the retail space inside the Exelon Building at the new Harbor Point development, which will open later in 2016. (Other retail tenants setting up shop inside the Exelon building include West Elm, which opened this week, and Ceremony Coffee Roasters, which will debut in January.) Honeygrow, known for its customizable offerings that diners order via touch-screen, specializes in health-conscious dishes like red coconut curry noodles, roasted wheat berry salads, and fresh fruit bowls topped with honey and housemade whipped cream. If you can’t wait for Honeygrow to cut the ribbon at the new locations, the brand is hosting a free pop-up at Union Craft Brewing this weekend. Multiple locations including 3212 St. Paul Street

Slated to open in November, Greenmount Coffee Lab will offer a menu listing locally sourced salads and snacks, as well as coffee drinks roasted onsite. Though the building was severely damaged in a fire a few years back, Gjerde recently told us that it has been completely revamped, now boasting a brand new interior and a game room with shuffleboard and flat-screen TVs. Under the helm of executive chef Jason Horwitz, the menu will highlight an array of soups and salads alongside heartier lunch and dinner entrees.
Judge’s Bench: Just shy of five weeks after raging flood waters wreaked havoc in Ellicott City, this Main Street haunt officially reopened its doors last weekend with a celebration that drew in the likes of County Executive Allan Kittleman and Lt.
Between 2 Buns: Chef Andrew Cole of Hampden’s Corner Charcuterie Bar has already gained a loyal following with Cultured, his meat and cheese concept located in the center of Mt. Vernon Marketplace. Next month, Cole is expanding his presence in the market with the debut of this new artisanal burger stall. Between 2 Buns will focus on burgers made with local beef and gluten-free buns, house-made sausages, boozy milkshakes, and worldly takes on poutine—a traditional Canadian dish topping French fries with gravy and cheese curds. The new stall, which will sit behind Edible Favors and Fresh Mondays in the communal market, is slated to open by the end of April. 520 Park Ave., 443-804-3933

Now, those plans are finally coming to fruition as owners Bob and Donna Creager announced last week that they signed a lease to open a new location in Aberdeen. The new eatery, formerly Gino’s Burgers & Chicken, will serve Chaps’ signature charcoal-smoked pit beef sandwiches along with other barbecue bites like ribs, chicken, burgers, and hot dogs. Slated to open in May, the owners hope that the new location will pave the way for franchising opportunities in the future. 1013 Beards Hill Road, Aberdeen, 410-273-7777

Arômes: Since its debut last spring, chef/owner Steve Monnier has been putting himself on the map with the seasonal prix-fixe menus at this French-inspired restaurant. This month, the Hampden dinner spot is switching things up by replacing its $45 four-course prix-fixe with an à la carte menu of 10 rotating dishes to be served on weekdays. Although the four-course menu will no longer be offered, Monnier’s $65 six-course pre-fixe will be available all week—featuring dishes such as crispy scallops with cannellini beans, beef short ribs with mole miso, and carrot miso crème brûlée. 3520 Chestnut Ave., 410-235-0035.

Camden Pub: Known for its menu full of game-day grub and nightly drink deals, Camden Pub has been a go-to hangout for Orioles and Ravens fans for 25 years. But as of earlier this week, the Ridgeley’s Delight mainstay is on the market. A listing on BizBuySell.com notes owner Pat Liberto’s plans to retire as the reason for the sale. No word yet on any potential buyers, or if changes will be implemented under new ownership. 647 W. Pratt St., 410-547-1280

La Cuchara: This Basque-inspired Woodberry spot is throwing a new happy hour concept into the mix this season. The recently launched “Bivalves in Bilbao” menu is now offered weeknights from 5-7 p.m. and 9 p.m. until close, and invites diners seated at the bar to taste $1 pintxos (bite-sized skewered snacks), slurp $1 oysters, and sip signature firkins of Union Craft Brewing beer, which are tapped weekly.3600 Clipper Mill Road, 443-708-3838

Although there’s no word yet on the reasons for the closure, the post also indicates that the Tapas Adela team has taken over the recently renovated Kali’s Court space next to Mezze. The revamped spot will emphasize shrimp, steak, and martinis, and offer late-night dancing on the weekends. 814 S. Broadway

Along with its rare international blends from as far as East Africa, the new spot will feature weekly coffee tastings and latte art tutorials in an adjacent workshop space.
Mi & Yu Noodle Bar: Federal Hill welcomed this new ramen and pho shop from Chef Edward Kim—formerly of Soigne in Riverside—earlier this week. The 27-seat space boasts a fast-casual menu full of udon and pho soup bowls, steam buns, dumplings, banh mi sandwiches and, of course, ramen. Given the limited seating, Mi & Yu is slated to offer online pickup and delivery services via ChowNow and OrderUp starting next week. 1016 S. Charles St., 443-388-9295

Publick Library: Be on the lookout for this new gastro pub, from Alewife owner Bryan Palombo, expected to join Highlandtown’s thriving retail and restaurant scene by the end of 2015. Palombo says that the interior will seat 85, and feature his own signature woodwork. Mirroring its sister-restaurant, Publick Library will highlight an extensive beer list and upscale bar fare. 3323 Eastern Ave..

CH-CH-CHANGES:

L.P. Steamers: Expansions are underway at this longtime Locust Point crab house, which currently sees weekend wait times reaching two to three hours. In efforts to seat diners more quickly, owners Kim and Andrew Gordon have recently gotten the ball rolling with their plans to build a larger kitchen in a next-door row home. The kitchen, expected to be complete in November, will also allow for new dishes on the menu. The family-run seafood business has been around for nearly 20 years, highlighting steamed crabs, an expansive raw bar, stuffed seafood sandwiches, and a rooftop deck with a killer view.1100 E. The focus is on pinxtos (two-bite tasting dishes) and made-for-sharing tapas plates. 3600 Clipper Mill Road, 443-708-3838.

Nando’s Peri-Peri: Get a taste of South Africa by way of Harbor East at this chain that opened next door to Hyatt Place hotel in Harbor East last week. Fittingly, the restaurant got its start in Johannesburg, and has since expanded with multiple locations throughout Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia. Some of the South African-Portuguese fusion fare includes flame-grilled chicken, stuffed pita sandwiches, and grilled corn and butternut squash. 1300 Fleet St., 443-681-5181.

Smashburger: Fast-casual burger joints seem to be making their mark on Charm City, and the newest one celebrated its debut in Fells Point last week. In addition to its signature seared-to-perfection burgers, the Denver-based chain also offers chicken sandwiches, salads, haystack onion rings, and handspun milkshakes. 616 S. Broadway, 443-992-4919.

Cosima: Donna’s co-owners Alan Hirsch and Donna Crivello recently announced that they have broken ground on this new Southern-Italian-inspired project in Hampden’s Mill No. 1 development. The owners estimate that the new spot should be up and running this fall. 3000 Falls Road.

CuVino: Be on the lookout for this doctor’s office-turned-trattoria that will soon be getting the ball rolling in Timonium.

Dinosaur BBQ: Our mouths have been watering in anticipation of this barbecue joint’s arrival for a while now, and it looks like all of the finger-licking eats will finally be available in Fells Point starting this summer. The New York-based chain highlights classics like sliced brisket, smoked chicken, and house-made sausage. 1401 Fleet Street.

Sweetgreen: This D-I-Y salad bar is all the rage in Washington, D.C., and—having snagged the last of the Hyatt Place hotel’s 13,000 ft. retail space—it’s officially headed our way. No word yet on when the trendy eatery will open, but for a taste of what’s to come, be sure to grab some sustainable snacks while jamming to headliners Kendrick Lamar and Calvin Harris at Sweetgreen’s Sweetlife Festival May 30-31. 1300 Fleet Street.

	CH-CH-CHANGES:

Bottega: Other than its elegant Tuscan fare, the defining trait of this 20-seat space in Station North is its coziness. But come Memorial Day, Bottega will be moving to a larger home in Hampden with more room to breathe. Although the address of the new space has yet to be confirmed, sources tell us that it will accommodate 70 guests, and a portion of the restaurant will remain BYOB. 443-708-5709

Waterstone Bar & Grille: Under new ownership, changes are underway for this Mediterranean spot in Mt. Vernon. In addition to serving breakfast and lunch and making its own in-house roasted coffee, owner Shawn Singh is planning on changing the restaurant’s name to Bistro 311 later this month. The menu will also see changes, transforming from Mediterranean fare to South Asian-inspired small plates. 311 W. Madison St., 410-225-7475.

We’ve finally given winter a proper sendoff, which means that it’s the perfect time of year to get out there and dine al fresco or take a stroll to a local food truck on your lunch break. No closings to report this time around, but a fleet of potential new favorites are joining the scene just in time for spring. Here’s what should be on your radar:

OPEN:

Baroak Cookhouse & Taproom: This new restaurant inside the Loews Annapolis Hotel opened its doors earlier this month. Executive chef Teddy Folkman’s American and Belgian-inspired menu highlights mussels, frites, and plenty of craft beer for guests to enjoy in the relaxed bar-centric space. 126 W. St., Annapolis, 410-263-7777.

Chef Mac on the Artist’s Palate Food Truck: Fans of the short-lived Hamilton restaurant Chef Mac’s and All that Blues will be happy to hear that Chef Maclonza Lee has recently been hitting the streets in MICA’s Artist’s Palate food truck to serve up his signature Louisiana comfort food all over town. Catch the truck on Preston St. on Wednesdays and on N. Calvert St. on Thursdays to sample Cajun-inspired fare like oyster po’ boys and barbecue shrimp. 410-319-6227.

Chick-fil-A: One hundred early risers got lucky on Thursday morning, as this chain restaurant celebrated its grand opening at the Inner Harbor by giving the first patrons in line free food for a year. The new eatery joins recently-opened Shake Shack and in-the-works create-your-own salad bar Nalley Fresh on the ground floor of 400 E. Pratt St. Chick-fil-A offers chicken nuggets, wraps, salads, and a variety of chicken sandwiches served with its signature waffle-cut French fries. 400 E. Pratt St.

Center-Cut Doughnuts: Up-and-coming donut seller Josh Kowitz put himself on the map last month when dozens of his sweet treats sold out within an hour at a pop-up event at The Charmery. If you’re still kicking yourself for not getting there in time, mark your calendar because Kowitz’s Center-Cut Doughnuts will be back at the Hampden ice-cream shop once again on April 11 from 2 p.m. until they sell out. Flavors offered will include key lime pie, peach sriracha, and milk chocolate iced with sprinkles. 801 W. 36th St., 410-814-0493.

Fractured Prune: Speaking of donuts, locals have recently taken to social media to post pictures of the colorful confections purchased at this highly anticipated donut shop in Owings Mills. The Ocean City-based franchise opened a location at the new Metro Centre late last month, and a multitude of unique options including banana cream pie, lemonade, salted caramel, and s’mores flavored donuts are featured daily. 10209 Grand Central Ave., Owings Mills, 410-356-3949.

Luigi’s Italian Deli of Hampden: This W. 36th St. spot on The Avenue has been somewhat of a revolving door over the past few months, but with a new owner taking over, Luigi’s is back in the game. The deli’s original owner Jeanine Little decided to terminate her lease last year, and for a while the buzz was that former Fork & Wrench chef Cyrus Keefer was to transform the space into a 30-seat boutique bistro called Pique. But when Keefer’s project fell through due to financial issues, Hampden resident Chris Doiron moved forward with his plans to buy Luigi’s and restore the deli back to its former glory in its original home. Luigi’s celebrated its grand re-opening on Tuesday, with its signature antipasti and authentic Italian sandwiches. 864 W. 36th St., 443-438-4195.

COMING SOON:

Preserve: Husband-and-wife team Jeremy and Michelle Hoffman are putting a unique spin on the farm-to-table concept with the upcoming opening of Preserve, their highly anticipated new Annapolis spot. Slated to open on April 15, the restaurant’s menu will focus on sustainability, pickling, and fermentation (as its clever name signifies). The interior of the 42-seat space will feature jars of pickled vegetables, jams, and jellies on display, and some of the menu items will include kimchi, pickles, sauerkraut, braised pork shoulder, and cauliflower steak. 164 Main St., Annapolis, 443-598-6920.
