Julia Arfaa began her law practice in 2013 with one assistant and one desk in her home. They were crammed into a room so small they had to squeeze by the copy machine, and the telephone sat on a cardboard box. Six months later, she and her assistant moved to a small rented office in Clipper Mill. Since then, ARFAA Law Group has grown to include an associate, six full-time employees, and a summer intern, and it now occupies two floors in Clipper Mill.

The firm specializes in helping those facing medical-malpractice catastrophes. As a child, Arfaa would accompany her physician father on hospital rounds and grew to love medicine, inheriting his passion for helping those in need. After graduating from Smith College, Arfaa obtained her law degree from the Syracuse University College of Law and went on to become a partner at two of Maryland’s leading medical-malpractice firms before launching her own business. Arfaa has been featured as Baltimore’s Face of Medical Malpractice in 2018 and 2019, and has been recognized by the American Board of Trial Advocates, the National Trial Lawyers Top 100, and as a Super Lawyers Top 50 Female Attorney.

Arfaa has a track record for settlements and jury awards in the millions, including a $15.6-million verdict in Prince George’s County, an $18.6-million verdict in Baltimore County (the largest medical-malpractice verdict in the county), and a $21-million verdict in Baltimore City.

There is a tremendous growth in the need for specialized, high-quality spine care. The Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics (CAO) – OrthoMaryland, is meeting that need with a spine team consisting of two surgeons and two physiatrists, all fellowship-trained in spine care. Kyong Choe, periodontist, was inspired in his career choice by two brothers who also practice dentistry. Lisa Rusyniak describes herself as a data geek. Some numbers she is really proud of: Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake, where she has worked for the past 22 years, helps more than 2,000 people in the community find jobs each year. With 950 employees, it’s one of the largest nonprofit employers in the Maryland, operating 32 retail-donation centers and 11 job-training sites. Launched in 1980, the family-owned Lothorian has grown from servicing and maintaining pools to developing Baltimore’s most spectacular residential and commercial swimming pools. When Tom Smyth, co-president at Smyth Jewelers, joined the family business, it was a fairly small, mostly wholesale operation. “I was asked to help with the cleanup and recovery after our business experienced a devastating fire in 1970,” he recalls. Over the years, Smyth and his team grew Smyth Jewelers through conscientious customer service and an eye for quality. Today, the company has more than 130 employees in three locations.
