Helping Up Mission

1216 E. Baltimore Street,
Baltimore, MD 21202

Helping Up Mission (HUM) is called to transform the lives and restore hope to those suffering from addiction and poverty by harnessing the power of faith, science, and community. The people Helping Up Mission serve are men and women facing addiction and homelessness, many who have struggled for years with substance abuse and unemployment, who arrive ready for life-change and transformation.

Begun in 1885, HUM has grown from an emergency overnight shelter to a community of hope offering programs and services for those facing the challenges of addiction, abuse, homelessness, and poverty. Its flagship, yearlong, 12-step-based, spiritual recovery program is the largest residential recovery program in Maryland, serving 400-plus men and women a day in their quest to overcome alcoholism, drug addiction, and mental-health challenges.

Programs for men include both immediate and long-term care through overnight guest services, the spiritual recovery program, veteran’s services, and a next step program. In HUM’s care, men can overcome addiction, homelessness, and other challenges they may face so they can return to their families and communities as leaders and role models. HUM’s Center for Women & Children supports women and new moms with babies to rebuild their lives and experience true transformation, helping to break the generational cycle of addiction or trauma. To meet the needs of Baltimoreans where they are, HUM’s Street Outreach program takes a mobile unit into the community, traveling with essential services—and hope.

More Baltimoreans than ever are seeking lasting recovery. Helping Up Mission relies on community support to help meet the unprecedented demand and give men and women the helping hand they need to restore and rebuild their lives.
