The University of Maryland School of Dentistry (UMSOD) was established in 1840 as the first dental college in the world and remains the only provider of academic dentistry in the state.
UMSOD’s faculty dentists and dental students care for more than 23,000 patients annually and serve as the largest provider of oral health care to persons living with HIV and for Medicaid-eligible children in Maryland. Additionally, we offer preventive dental care in non-traditional settings such as senior centers, primary care practices, and the Women Infant and Children (WIC) program.
In 2025, UMSOD was voted Baltimore’s Best Pediatric Dentist, Best Orthodontist, and Best Dentist (runner-up). Additionally, 12 of our faculty were named Top Dentists by Baltimore magazine, including Mary Beth Aichelmann-Reidy, DDS, division chief of periodontics.
Dr. Reidy is also a previous recipient of the Lucy Hobbs Taylor Award– the American Association of Women Dentists’ (AAWD) highest award—and currently serves as the faculty advisor for UMSOD’s nationally recognized AAWD student chapter.
As Director of the Special Care and Geriatrics Clinic, Adila Baig, DDS, ensures dental students are appropriately trained to confidently and competently manage the unique needs of patients with significant medical complexities, including physical, intellectual, and developmental disabilities, and adults aged 65 and older.
Through grant-funded projects and by uniting local thought leaders, Lisa Bress, RDH, MS, chief of the dental hygiene division, is addressing the statewide shortage of dental hygienists and enhancing oral health and overall well-being for underserved communities.
This past year, Alison Scott, PhD, a well-respected researcher and educator, was named president-elect of the International Mass Spectrometry Imaging Society–Americas. Dr. Scott’s area of study is focused on the poorly understood role of lipids in infections and diseases.
UMSOD is dedicated to supporting women in leadership, improving the human condition, and training the next generation of oral health providers and leaders. We offer unmatched dental education programs (DDS, Dental Hygiene, Postgraduate), and deliver exceptional patient care using the latest treatments—such as regenerative therapies, state-of-the-art technologies including artificial intelligence, and cutting-edge research.
