Assistant Editor

Baltimore magazine is seeking an assistant editor to join our editorial team and immerse themselves in the creation of the UpFront section of our monthly print publication. This person will contribute heavily to the magazine’s front-of-book—managing the Table of Contents and Letters pages, writing the Events Calendar, and contributing to the Metro section. They should be able to maintain a keen sense of our print and online audiences, submit pitches accordingly, report news quickly and concisely, and meet multiple weekly deadlines.

Our ideal candidate is a self-motivated, deadline-driven, skilled reporter who thinks critically and can stay on top of hard news, as well as take deeper dives into longer form trend and feature stories across a variety of topics, including breaking news, arts, culture, community, business, politics, tech, and more.

Responsibilities: 

  • Write and edit the Table of Contents and Letters pages for monthly magazine.
  • Report, write, and edit UpFront Events Calendar for monthly magazine.
  • Pitch, report, and write at least one (1) viable general interest story each month for the magazine’s UpFront Metro section.
  • Assist senior editor with further creation of monthly UpFront Metro section, including reporting and writing the Buzz, 410, and Art Space sidebars.
  • Attend weekly and monthly staff meetings to brainstorm coverage with other editors.
  • Collaborate with art department and digital team in various capacities.
  • Contribute to other editorial assignments (annual service packages like Best of Baltimore, fact-checking help, etc.) as needed.
  • Maintain relationships with community contacts and publicists in an effort to secure exclusives and stay on top of developing news.

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher (journalism-related fields preferred)
  • At least two (2) years relevant experience (internships included)
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, deadline-driven newsroom
  • Strong reporting, writing, and fact-checking skills
  • Strong communication, multitasking, and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of the Baltimore region
  • Knowledge of AP Style

Digital Staff Writer

Baltimore magazine is the longest-standing city magazine in the country, evolving to become a multi-channel media powerhouse—including print, digital, live events, and custom publishing—in the Baltimore region. We are passionate about our town, the people who live here, and the stories we tell.

We are searching for a deadline-driven reporter to join our digital-editorial staff. This person will contribute heavily to our daily website–pitching, reporting, and writing a minimum of 3-4 stories per week. They should be able to maintain a keen sense of our online audience, report news quickly and concisely, and meet daily deadlines. Our ideal candidate is an eager, trustworthy, skilled journalist who thinks critically and can stay on top of hard news, as well as take deeper dives into longer form trend and feature stories across a variety of topics. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Pitch, report, and write 3-4 viable articles per week for Baltimore magazine’s daily website, including stories on breaking news, food, arts, community, culture, business, politics, and wellness. 
  • Report and write Weekend Lineup, our authoritative weekly web column that provides five event suggestions for readers each weekend. 
  • Maintain relationships with community contacts and publicists in an effort to secure exclusives and stay on top of developing news. 
  • Assist digital editor with administrative duties such as fact-checking and updating archived content, as needed.
  • Attend routine storyboard meetings to brainstorm coverage with other editors.

We are seeking an experienced business development executive to lead the growth of our Creative Studio division. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in consulting, marketing, and creative services. The role is perfectly positioned for a self-motivated, results-driven, sales-oriented person who can serve as strategic account manager and marketing consultant.

Responsibilities:

  • Establish a strategic growth plan that reflects our current portfolio of clients and services.
  • Prospect and qualify potential clients, identifying key decision-makers and understanding their business needs and challenges.
  • Actively participate in lead generation activities such as networking, industry events, conference attendance, partnerships with other organizations, and general business development efforts.

Editorial-Digital Intern: Baltimore offers a robust internship program combining experience on both its print and digital platforms. Interns gain real-world experience working with the magazine’s editorial team on the production of our monthly print publication and the magazine’s daily website.

The internship is remote with some in-person meetings. All applicants must be enrolled at a college or university and be eligible for academic credit. This is an unpaid internship.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Research, fact-checking, writing event listings, administrative responsibilities, and working with editors on independent projects.
  • Pitching well-researched online-exclusive story ideas to the digital editor.
  • Reporting, writing, and posting 2-3 web stories per week.

Social Media Marketing Intern: Baltimore magazine is looking for a creative social media marketing intern for the fall 2023 semester. Until further notice, the internship is remote. All applicants must be enrolled at a college or university and be eligible for academic credit. This is an unpaid internship.

The Social Media Intern will work alongside team members to do the following:

  • Help develop and execute daily social media strategy and campaigns.
  • Collaborate and abide by main calendar.
  • Content creation (marketing, editorial, and social).
  • Remain consistent and on-brand by writing in magazine’s voice.
  • Monitor and engage audience across all social channels.
  • Research and curate content and images for use on our social channels.
  • Monitor social analytics to identify trends and growth opportunities.
  • Conduct research and analysis of competitive or similar social channels/strategies.
  • Suggest new ways to attract prospective customers (promotions, contests, etc.).
  • Stay up-to-date with changes in all social platforms ensuring maximum effectiveness.
