By Lauren Bell | June 2017 David Colwell Obviously glasses help me see, but my Warby Parker glasses are my favorite stylish frames and my Ray-Bans were a gift from my fiancé. One of my poetry mentors sells these backpacks from Ghana at Be Free Fridays—my 11-year-old open mic night—and I’m addicted to buying them and wearing them. I have recorded a few albums with this microphone and I have taken it to several feature performances. It’s very special to me. Taking photos with my Olympus and my Nikon is as exciting as when I wrote my first poem 25 years ago. All Will Smith movies teach me something. His mastery of his craft speaks to me, and fear isn’t an option in any of these films. My shoes define my outfit. My wingtips never make sense, but they make a statement. Being a hat person is a Nelson/McKinney family gift. I have my best days when my brim is perfectly tilted. My nonprofit’s swag has become my daily uniform. Controlling the narrative and being the walking embodiment of it go hand in hand. Some of my favorite books include The American Civil Rights Movement, The Fire Next Time, Sister Outsider, and my writing journals since I’m a poet. I picked up guitar eight years ago at the age of 28 to replace my father’s brother in his band. They have passed on but their legacy hasn’t.
